Greetings and salutations everyone and welcome back! I was so excited to start my year, I came back to work a whole day early! Now if that isn’t enthusiasm, then somebody please enlighten me! To all of you avid readers out there, may this year be fruitful, bountiful, prosperous and above all, may it be good to each and every one of you. Welcome to the first edition of Living the Good Life for 2015!

I’d like to wish all our Chinese residents a Happy New Year for 19th February. It’s the Year of the Sheep/Goat and according to Chinese astrology, this year will be an auspicious one; we all have something promising to look forward to. Come on everyone; let’s put our all into making this a good year!

To our young matriculants who are going to uni or college or who are hitting the big world out there, we wish you every success. It took you twelve years to get through school and now your future is ahead of you. Make the most of your dreams and aspirations and never let them go. Be all you can be because you are our future!

If you watched Carte Blanche a couple of Sundays ago, you would have seen the drama unfold on the nanny who ill-treated a baby. It went viral in December and it was truly traumatising to watch. So, if you as parents are thinking of hiring a nanny for your children, please be sure to check out this piece; it will prove helpful in your search for the perfect nanny.

Super Rugby is upon us and I’m really excited. As always, get the boerie and beer ready and let’s support our boys! GO THE SHARKS!

New Year’s Resolutions: I’m raising my own eyebrow at the notion because I know the minute I tell myself that I want to do xyz, is the minute abc happens. Instead, I’m going to tell myself that I don’t need to stick to a resolution to achieve my goal. I’m going to make like Nike...JUST DO IT!

I wish all our readers a very blessed 2015 and hope that this year will treat us well. It’s time to put our heads down, dream big and go the distance. Enjoy this issue and I hope we can work together to make this year the best yet!

Best Regards

As we get going for a brand new year, I take this opportunity in wishing everyone a Happy New Year for 2015.

In recent time, Management Associations have faced a few legal challenges with the most recent one being Home Owners Associations vs the Major banks regarding Levy Clearance Certificates in the event of a forced sale. The banks challenged the right of HOA’s to require levy accounts to be settled prior to transfer in a forced sale in execution. With the assistance of the Association of Residential Communities, the matter was heard by the Supreme Court

of Appeal and we are delighted to inform residents that the HOA’s rights were upheld by the SCA. It is estimated that this will save the South African HOA industry over R800 million in otherwise lost levies. It is pleasing to note that the courts are taking the rights of HOA seriously and protecting the interests of residents who invest in a property in a residential community.

The Meccema Two team is available to assist you with any estate matters and look forward to enhancing your Estate Two experience in 2015.

Last year consideration was given by the Board to have a Bus Shelter built at gate 5, similar to what was done at Gates 4 and 6. This project is being undertaken to upgrade the transport system on the Estate and to accommodate the domestics during inclement weather.

Plans were approved by our Planning and Aesthetics committee and submitted to eThekwini municipality for approval. Now that the plans have been approved and a contractor appointed, we hope to have the vegetation cleared by Leitch before month end. Construction should commence by mid February and finish by mid April. There is also a Lay bye proposed on the exit of gate 5 to allow buses and contractors to offload and avoid congestion at the boom gate.

We kindly request that you be cautious and patient with us during this period of construction, as there will be congestion within the office parking areas.

o ur vice Chairman of the Board, Kishore Ramkissoon would like to share his experience with you in the hopes that he could be of some assistance to you as Eskom threaten to load

shed all over again.

Frustrating Eskom power outages is here to stay for a long time. The reasons widely reported in the media recently confirms this and most of us wish we had some type of back-up power supply right now. The question is what system and how much back-up power to support the essential household appliances, Tv, music system, etc, and what does it cost.

I would like to share my experience in the hope that it would assist residents who are contemplating installing a back-up system. I had a large diesel generator installed at my previous house outside the Estate seven years ago. It supported almost all appliances in the house but was very noisy, and the exhaust fumes excessive; not to mention the high running cost. Needless to say, my neighbours were very unhappy with the noise and air pollution. It was over-specified; unnecessarily large for the power demand during the outages. I did not consider this as an option on this Estate for reasons mentioned and the Estate regulations pertaining to power generators.

Instead I sensibly selected the essential power consuming items that I needed back-up power for, and opted for a 3KvA UPS system complete with 8 x 12volt (102a/h) batteries neatly stored in a steel cabinet (50cm x 70cm x 83cm); the UPS is 45cm x 35cm x 20cm in dimensions. This UPS system easily powers the following items for 4 hours:

• 1 Bar fridge• 1 wine cooler• 1 Large flat-screen TV • 1 Music system• 2 fans• 1 laptop computer and printer• DSTV decoder• 20 (7/5w) LED lights

The transition between Eskom to UPS and back is automatic. It is necessary to have an electrician wire up the system to the distribution board (DB) and redirect wiring to the plug-points serving selected electrical items and lights to a smaller dedicated DB. With one or two exceptions, I have installed LED lights throughout the house to reduce the power demand. I therefore can have 20 or more lights on during load-shedding periods. For the same reason I have gas stove and braai. During the recent week-end outages my system worked as specified during the four and half hour period with power to spare. The system installed, including electrical work cost me approximately R25k a year ago. UPS systems with larger capacity are also available.

S ometimes water birds make mistakes when choosing a fish to eat. I took pictures 1 to 4 on the dam in front of our house on the estate. The goliath

heron mistook the stick for a fish dinner and picture 1 shows how he had speared his beak right into the stick. No damage done, except for perhaps a feeling of foolishness or disappointment on the part of the heron.

The purple heron in picture 2 was opportunistic and speared a fish that was swimming past only to discover that the fish was too big for it to swallow. The goliath heron would have swallowed this fish with ease whereas, try as it may, the purple heron could not ingest the meal. After a long struggle, the heron held the fish forlornly in its beak for one last time

before finally abandoning it and seeking out something more appropriate in size.

Similarly, the reed cormorant in picture 3 and the giant kingfisher in picture 4 both had to finally concede defeat and abandon their intended fish meals because they were just too large for them to cope with.

It is much more of a problem when a water bird mistakes bait which is still attached to a hook for a meal. I took picture 5 of a darter resting on the dam that near the green of the thirteenth hole. Pictures 6 and 7 were taken of a different darter on the dam in front of our house. Making an error such as this can prove fatal for water birds as they are then no longer able to catch fish to feed on and so eventually, they die of starvation. Picture 7 shows that

notwithstanding its handicap this darter was still able to catch a small fish which it took to the shallows in order to swallow it. Unfortunately, the fish escaped whilst the bird was struggling to swallow it.

Picture 8 shows how a darter normally swallows a fish. A hook and matted fishing line in the mouth of such a bird renders the task of swallowing a fish almost impossible. Darters seek out fish in the sea as well as in dams and they can unwittingly take bait still attached to hooks that have been snagged on rocks. It is extremely difficult to catch these birds that are in distress in order to remove the hooks before infection sets in or starvation takes hold. Making unfortunate choices when foraging for food can sometimes result in fatal consequences for birds.

I t is important to remember that pools pose an ever-present danger for serious injuries and fatalities.

We have designed and patented a world first swimming pool safety product that helps prevent injuries around the pool. Oftentimes, and particularly, children will attempt to climb out of a swimming pool using the edge of the deck for support. In so doing, it is common place for these children to scratch and abrade arms and legs. The above and other injuries could easily be avoided by the provision of some form of protective guard which extends around the periphery of the swimming pool.

When you see the product and understand the potential and how it actually really works then you will have no concern to have it installed for the safety of your children. It’s like wearing a helmet and pads to the pool!

ABOUT THE PRODUCTSimply put THE EDGE PROTECTOR is a flexible, protective covering manufactured from a durable and resistant material which is designed to prevent or limit accidental injury to a person by cushioning the effects of blunt force trauma. It is affixed to and encapsulates any exposed internal or external edge.

We have already installed at the following prestigious locations with glowing reports, DURBAN COUNTRY CLUB, CRAWFORD LA LUCIA’S academy POOL and at the MOUNT EDGECOMBE COUNTRY CLUB COMMUNITY CENTER POOLS.

As you can see from the pictures it is non-intrusive protection and best of all it is non-toxic, UV resistant, maintenance free, retains colour, chemical and algae resistant, and finally it is CFC free. If you never knew better you would not even know it is there!

f or a while now, I’ve been curious about the difference between whisky and whiskey and on top of that, Bourbon has added to my confusion. A friend of mine, Martyn

Heaton is an avid Jack Daniels man; from his bar, to his amazing chess set, to a birthday pressie from his adoring wife Sue – a Jack Daniels guitar – the man is a fond follower of the spirit and his passion for it shows. I often question him on the difference and although I do my level best to remember, I don’t seem to absorb his answers. I decided it would be a great article to do so investigated several sites on the net and combined them to bring you this. I won’t forget now...er...after a glass or two, that may not be possible.

Before we get going, let’s define the liquor in general: No matter how you spell it, whisky/ey is an umbrella term for a type of spirit distilled from a mash of fermented grains.

Now let’s look at some different types: Within the broad category of whisky/ey are many sub-categories, including bourbon, rye, Tennessee, Scotch, Irish, and Canadian style whiskies. The manufacture of each of these types of whisky/ey is guided and regulated by the government of the spirit's country of origin. As a result, Canadian whisky, is completely different from Scotch whisky, Irish whiskey and American-style whiskeys such as Tennessee, bourbon, and straight rye.

Bourbon needs to be produced in America and made from 51% corn, whisky does not. Bourbon also needs to be stored in new, charred oak barrels whereas whiskey barrels do need to be oak but not new or charred. Lastly, to be called bourbon, the liquid needs to be distilled to no more than 160 proof and

entered into the barrel at 125. For other whiskies the liquid must be distilled to no more than 190 proof. For an explanation of proof, here you go: proof is twice the percentage of alcohol by volume. Therefore, 100 proof is 50% alcohol. 200 proof is 100% alcohol.

Now things start to get tricky: American and Irish liquor producers (and copy editors) tend to favour the spelling WHISKEY, while Canadian, Scottish, and Japanese producers (and copy editors) tend to favor (or should I say, favour) WHISKY.

The controversy: There are two things going on here: copy editing style and actual liquor style. The big question is: Are WHISKEY and WHISKY just two different spellings of the same word, or are they two slightly different words describing two separate groups of spirits?

Whiskey/whisky nmemonics: Here’s a quick way to remember how some of the world’s biggest producers spell their products:

Countries that have E’s in their names (UnitEd StatEs and IrEland) tend to spell it whiskEy (plural whiskeys)

Countries without E’s in their names (Canada, Scotland, and Japan) spell it whisky (plural whiskies)Whew! Time for a drink.

THE DISTILLATION PROCESSIt is here that one of the main differences occurs. Generally, Scottish and American whiskies are distilled twice and Irish whiskey is distilled three times (there are exceptions to the rule, in all cases). Distilling three times produces a lighter and smoother spirit.

WHISKEY/WHISKY

TASTIng

THE STILLSThe size and shape of the stills used in the distillation process are different. In Ireland and much of America, pot stills are frequently used. These are short, fat, large stills with a round base that produce softer and more rounded spirits. In Scotland, distilleries use a wide variety of shapes and size of still and this gives wider diversity of characters and flavours.

THE USE OF PEATIn Scotland, it is common to use peat to dry the malted barley so that it is ready for milling and mashing. The type of peat used and the length of time the barley dries in the peat smoke will influence the flavour in the final spirit. This gives Scottish whisky its fullness and traditional smokiness. In Ireland and America, they use wood or other fuels in this process and this makes the spirit

less smoky and lighter. Again, there are exceptions.

THE USE OF GRAINSThe Scots use malted barley in most whisky produced, however this is not the case in Ireland. They also use malted barley, but may mix other grains in with it. Traditionally, Ireland has had a poorer economy than Scotland and barley is expensive to buy. Therefore, it is cheaper to use other grain to produce whiskey. This grain whiskey lends itself to blending and historically it used to make cheap blends. In America, the new settlers were forced to use different raw materials to produce their whiskey due to the different climate and soil conditions. This included mixing different grains together during the mashing process depending on what was available. Over time, these different recipes of grain mixtures have

evolved so that now, American whiskey bears very little similarity to Scottish or Irish whiskies.

THE DISTILLERIESThe oldest registered distillery in Ireland is Bushmills, which has been in production since 1608. In Scotland, the oldest one opened in 1772; Littlemill, which has now closed down. Glenturret is the oldest current distillery in operation, opening in 1775. The first American distilleries were set up in the late 18th century in Bourbon County, Kentucky. Nowadays, only seven of these are still in operation in Kentucky. These seven distilleries are Bernheim, Buffalo Trace, Four Roses, Jim Beam, Maker's Mark, Wild Turkey and Woodford Reserve and they produce many different whiskies using a unique, traditional recipe for each. The other major production area in America is in the

neighbouring state of Tennessee, although only two distilleries remain in operation George Dickel and Jack Daniels. AGINGWhiskies do not mature in the bottle, only in the cask, so the “age” of a whisky is only the time between distillation and bottling. This reflects how much the cask has interacted with the whisky, changing its chemical makeup and taste. Whiskies bottled for many years may have a rarity value, but are not “older" and not necessarily “better” than a more recent whisky that matured in wood for a similar time.

TYPESMalt whisky is made primarily from malted barley. Grain whisky is made from any type of grains.

American whiskey is distilled from a fermented mash of cereal grain. It must have the taste, aroma, and other characteristics commonly attributed to whiskey.

Irish whiskeys are normally distilled thrice, Cooley Distillery being the exception as they also double distil. Though traditionally distilled using pot stills, the column still is now used to produce grain whiskey for blends. By law, Irish whiskey must be produced in Ireland and aged in wooden casks for a period of no less than three years, although in practice it is usually three or four times that period.

Well, that was a mouthful and I now have a far greater appreciation of whiskey (whisky). On that note, my wine is calling.

TIPS foR HIRIng T H E PERfEcT nAnny A fter I saw the footage of a

baby being mistreated by its nanny in Uganda that went viral in December, I shuddered. I don’t have

children so can’t possibly imagine the horror at finding out that the person you trusted to look after your precious little gem, has been physically abusing your child. On Carte Blanche a few Sundays ago, another incident of a baby being abused by its nanny was shown. It was traumatising to watch. If you are considering taking on the services of a nanny, I think it’s pertinent to choose carefully. Here are some tips that I found on the net to help you.

1. Use a reputable agency – make sure that they do check written and verbal references and that they can supply you with the contact numbers so that you can speak to the previous employer. References are vitally important; you

want verifiable, objective references.

2. Create a checklist of certain "must-have" attributes and watch for them during the interview. In general, your child's nanny should be honest, committed, compassionate, intelligent, caring, empathetic and experienced. Your child's nanny should have a put-together appearance during the interview: How we express ourselves on the outside is often how we feel about ourselves on the inside. Punctuality is also important, as it demonstrates a person's work ethic, just like personal hygiene and appropriate dressing. We can only evaluate people in the beginning by their behaviour.

3. Look for someone who comes with first aid and CPR training. Your child's nanny should have the full spectrum of emergency care knowledge: Your nanny should know what to do if a child is choking or is feverish. The nanny should

always know who to call in case of emergencies and be familiar with how to get to the children's doctor or hospital.

4. Check if your nanny is in debt – You don’t want to hire a nanny that starts asking for loans as soon as the contract is signed. Pick a nanny that has a stable family background and good support network in case they have young children themselves.

5. Check if the nanny is hygiene conscious – does she think of washing her hands before she holds the baby?

6. Find out how healthy she is but do expect that at least once a month one of you will be sick – nanny, you or the baby, this is normal. Factor that into your work schedule and make sure you do have back up options if needed. Please note that it is illegal to ask her for her HIv status.

Mount EdgEcoMbE country club - Estate two | 19

7. Test her reading and writing – ask her to take a message and get someone to call during the interview. This will also test how well she responds to instructions.

8. Find out if she has young children – if they are under three years old, what type of support system does she have in place if they are sick?

9. Don’t judge a nanny purely on age and training but rather on personality – at the end of the day you will probably hire someone based on their personality/character and how they relate to your family rather than their impressive skills on paper. You can always train someone to do it your way. You can’t train a bad attitude.

10. Insist on a trial period – an agency cannot guarantee how a nanny interacts with your children. Yes, they can check to make sure that they are reliable and trustworthy but every mother has different expectations and an agency can only try and match accordingly. The trial is the real interview.

11. Before hiring your nanny, seal the deal by insisting that the nanny gets a police clearance from the police station. Please pay for this, as it is a big expense for the nanny if she is not working. Also ask them to go for a free TB test at their nearest government medical clinic. TB is a worse household predator than HIv.

12. Qualities to look for are a good attitude, honesty, reliability, shows initiative and a willingness to communicate and do the tasks the mother’s way. Skills can always be taught. Remember to trust your gut instinct when making your choice.

13. The right nanny will love your child and will have your child’s best interest at heart. They are looking after your most precious being – your child, so it is worth looking after her, treating her

with respect, showing or expressing your appreciation and remembering to say thank you even when they are just doing their job!

14. Create an employee file to protect your family. Once you’ve hired the best nanny for you and your family, it’s vital to collect important information to have on file in the house. Remember, you are now an employer with a paid employee, and you have to protect yourself in case of unforeseen circumstances like fraud, theft, or in an emergency. Here is a list of things that you should have on file:• Copy of your nanny’s driver’s license• Second form of identification• Copy of your nanny’s resume and

references• Copy of the nanny background check

you conducted• Copy of your nanny’s CPR/first aid

certification• Copy of your nanny’s job description• Signed I-9 form

Once you have found your nanny, start out firm with a clear list of her responsibilities and your expectations. Make sure to set boundaries

Unfortunately, it's not likely Nanny McPhee is going to show up at your door the morning you're ready to return to work from maternity leave. The search for a nanny can be daunting and the thought of leaving your newborn or toddler with a virtual stranger can be overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. These tips make hiring a nanny easier with tried-and-true tips from those in-the-know.

One more thing, if you already have a nanny in your employ and have noticed odd behaviour in your child, or even if you are planning to hire a nanny, there’s no harm in installing a camera. Check out this website for more information. www.nannicam.co.za

STAFF ROOM

PRoPERTy SALES

L adies and Gentlemen, please meet Annusha Sewpershad, our Property Sales Admin Manager and her awesome assistant Hayley vannan. Hayley joined

Annusha last year to assist in this extremely busy department and has proved to be competent and enthusiastic. Although they have worked together for five years, they have joined forces for almost a year as a highly competent team. They share a bit of themselves with us.

Hayley was a receptionist at a hostel in the UK for some time before joining Meccema Two. Annusha worked in the Legal department of the Sheriff ’s office as well as being a conveyancing paralegal for a company of attorneys.

Over the years, there have been so many funny incidents in their department, Annusha says, but it’s always funny when trying to decipher a foreign resident’s needs by trying to understand their language. It can be quite a challenge.

Working together can be trying, but issues that have surfaced have been quickly resolved by talking to each other and

reaching an amicable compromise. We are a happy team and work well together.

Hayley and Brendon have been happily married for almost 500 days now and things are getting better and better.

When I asked Haylz about the notion of retiring here at Meccema Two, she answered that the future is limitless and who knows what will happen. For Annusha, she admits to being content and does possibly see herself retiring here at Meccema Two. The highlight of being here, she says, is the adrenaline rush her department experiences. We enjoy dealing with our residents, whether they are existing or recently new residents. We aim to satisfy the resident’s needs as efficiently and speedily as possible.

Hayley loves to take photos (I can vouch for that), and loves spending time with her family and dear friends. Annusha has two daughters, Nishtha (21) and Triya (15).

Hayley doesn’t follow a specific sport but says she’ll try to make an effort to...hmmm...but does enjoy going for a late afternoon walk on the beach. Hayley and

Brendon don’t have kids yet and they are chatting about it for the future. Annusha loves to walk and run and especially enjoys jogging along the beach.

When it comes to movies, Hayley is more an avid follower of several tv series while Annusha’s favourite movie is Aashiquii II. Annusha also loves Hindi music, some religious but there are times she is forced to listen to what her kids like...and it’s not that bad mind you!

Hayley relates a funny incident that happened when a resident from Estate One moved onto Estate Two, insisting that the home they had lived in on Estate One was haunted. If that wasn’t enough, they declared that this house had a particularly creepy tree in the garden...eerie.

In conclusion, this department is hoping to flourish as it has done over the years and to uphold the highest integrity that this Estate offers. It’s going to be a happy and peaceful year with many goals to achieve. Annusha admits that she turns 50 this year and is planning a trip with her beloved daughters on the MSC Opera. A very exciting year ahead indeed.

MoTIvATIonI ’m on LinkedIn and occasionally

something truly wonderful appears in my inbox. This is one of those special things that I’d really like to share with you. It’s written by an

author named Jeff Haden. I hope you enjoy the read.

Some people instantly make us feel important. Some people instantly make us feel special. Some people light up a room just by walking in.

We can't always define it, but some people have “it” ~ they're naturally charismatic. Unfortunately, natural charisma quickly loses its impact. Familiarity breeds, well, familiarity. But some people are incredibly charismatic: they build and

maintain great relationships, positively influence the people around them, consistently make people feel better about themselves ~ they're the kind of people everyone wants to be around... and wants to be.

Fortunately, we can all be more charismatic, because charisma isn't about our level of success, or our presentation skills, or how we dress or the image we project. Charisma is about what we do. Here are ways you can be more charismatic:

Listen way more than you talk. Ask questions. Maintain eye contact. Smile. Frown. Nod. Respond, not so much verbally, but non-verbally. That's all it takes to show

the other person they're important. Then when you do speak, don't offer advice unless you're asked. Listening shows you care a lot more than offering advice, because when you offer advice in most cases you make the conversation about you, not them. Only speak when you have something important to say ~ and always define important as what matters to the other person, not to you.

Don't practice selective hearing. Some people - I guarantee you know a few like this - are incapable of hearing anything said by the people they feel are somehow beneath them. Sure, you speak to them, but that particular falling tree doesn't make a sound in the forest, because there's no one actually listening.

Mount EdgEcoMbE country club - Estate two | 23

Incredibly charismatic people listen closely to everyone, and they make all of us, regardless of our position or social status or “level”, feel like we have something in common with them. Because we do.

Always put your stuff away.Don't check your phone. Don't glance at your monitor. Don't focus on anything else, even for a moment. You can never connect with others if you're busy connecting with your stuff, too. Give the gift of full attention. That's a gift few people give. That gift alone will make others want to be around you and remember you.

Always give before you receive ~ knowing you may never receive.Never think about what you can get. Focus on what you can provide. Giving is the only way to establish a real connection and relationship. Focus, even in part and even for a moment, on what you can get out of the other person and you show that the only person who really matters is you. Just give. Be remarkably giving. Don't worry about whether you will someday receive.

Don't act self-important…The only people who are impressed by your stuffy, pretentious, self-important self are other stuffy, pretentious, self-important people. The rest of us aren't impressed. We're irritated, put off, and uncomfortable. And we aren't too thrilled when you walk in the room.

Since you know other people are more important...You already know what you know. You know your opinions. You know your perspective and point of view. That stuff isn't important, because it's already yours. You can't learn anything from yourself. But you don't know what other people know, and everyone, no matter who they are, knows things you don't know. That automatically makes them a lot more important than us because they're people we can learn from.

Shine the spotlight on others. No one receives enough praise. No one. Tell people what they did well. Wait, you say you don't know what they did well? Shame on you -- it's your job to know. It's your job to find out ahead of time. Not

only will people appreciate your praise, they'll appreciate the fact you care enough to pay attention to what they do. And they will feel a little more accomplished - and a lot more important.

Choose your attitude...and your words. The words you use affect the attitudes of others - and it affects you. For example, you don't have to go to a meeting; you get to go meet with other people. You don't have to create a presentation for a new client; you get to share cool stuff with other people. You don't have to go to the gym; you get to work out and improve your health and fitness. You don't have to interview job candidates; you get to select a great person to join your team. We all want to associate with happy, enthusiastic, fulfilled people. The approach you take and the words you choose can help other people feel better about themselves -and make you feel better about yourself, too.

Don't discuss the failings of others...Granted, we all like hearing a little gossip. We all like hearing a little dirt. The problem is, we don't necessarily like - and we definitely don't respect - the people who dish that dirt. Don't laugh at other people. When you do, the people around you wonder if you sometimes laugh at them.

Readily admit your own failings.Incredibly successful people are often assumed to have charisma simply because they are successful - their success can seem to create a halo effect, almost like a glow. The key word is "seem." You don't have to be incredibly successful to be extremely charismatic. Scratch the shiny surface and many successful people have the charisma of a rock.

You do have to be incredibly genuine to be extremely charismatic. Be humble. Share your screw-ups. Admit your mistakes and be the lesson learned. And definitely laugh at yourself. When you do, other people won't laugh at you. They'll laugh with you. And they'll like you better for it... and want to be around you a lot more.

WHAT IS PCP?PCP, or phencyclidine, is a “dissociative” anesthetic that was developed in the 1950’s as a surgical anaesthetic. PCP was used in veterinary medicine but was never approved for human use because of problems that arose during clinical studies, including delirium and extreme agitation experienced by patients emerging from anaesthesia. PCP is illicitly marketed under a number of other names, including Angel Dust, Supergrass, Killer Weed, Embalming Fluid, and Rocket Fuel, reflecting the range of its bizarre and volatile effects. Many people who use PCP may do it unknowingly because PCP is often used as an additive and can be found in marijuana, LSD, or methamphetamine.WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE?In its pure form, a white crystalline powder that readily dissolves in water or alcohol. However, most PCP on the illicit market contains a number of contaminants because of makeshift manufacturing, causing the colour to range from tan to

brown and the consistency from powder to a gummy mass. Although sold in tablets and capsules as well as in powder and liquid form, it is commonly applied to a leafy material, such as parsley, mint, oregano, or marijuana, and smoked. It has a distinctive bitter chemical taste.

HOW IS IT USED?PCP can be snorted, smoked, injected, or swallowed where it rapidly passes to the brain to disrupt the functioning of sites known our receptor complexes, which are receptors for the neurotransmitter glutamate. Glutamate receptors play a major role in the perception of pain, in cognition - including learning and memory - and in emotion. In the brain, PCP also alters the actions of dopamine, a neurotransmitter responsible for the euphoria and “rush” associated with many abused drugs.

WHAT ARE ITS EFFECTS?The drug’s effects are as varied as its appearance. A moderate amount

of PCP often causes the user to feel detached, distant, and estranged from his surroundings. Numbness, slurred speech, and loss of coordination may be accompanied by a sense of strength and invulnerability. A blank stare, rapid and involuntary eye movements, and an exaggerated gait are among the more observable effects. Auditory hallucinations, image distortion, severe mood disorders, and amnesia may also occur. In some users, PCP may cause acute anxiety and a feeling of impending doom; in others, paranoia and violent hostility; and in some, it may produce a psychosis indistinguishable from schizophrenia. PCP use is associated with a number of risks, and many believe it to be one of the most dangerous drugs of abuse.

At high doses, PCP can cause hallucinations, seizures, coma, and death (though death more often results from accidental injury or suicide during PCP intoxication). Other effects are nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, flicking up

I n previous issues of this magazine, I covered a whole range of the most popular drugs used in our society today. A resident contacted me in December asking why I had stopped. He had found the series of great interest and asked that I continue. So here I am again, talking about drugs. I will focus on the harmful effects of drugs on our bodies. The site I obtained a lot of my information from

is called Locked Up and their opening line is this: “We understand that the use of narcotics is not going away so rather than tell you "don't" because you probably will, we're offering you accurate information so you can make informed choices.”

I have already covered the most popular drugs, but if you would like me to rehash those articles, or if there are any other drugs that you would like me to investigate, please do not hesitate to drop me an e-mail and I will happily oblige. My addy is [email protected]

and down of the eyes, drooling, loss of balance, and dizziness.

The effects of PCP can be experienced for a few hours at a time, with the drug only leaving the body around 8 days after it is used. A person’s pain threshold will be greatly increased while PCP is present in the body, but this is just temporary. Those seeking out to try such a drug will find it quite easily and cheaply available on the street, but one should remember that while a drug may appear cheap, you will be paying in some way or another, and unfortunately that is often with your life. Possible death is always a fear and real danger when making use of street drugs, especially when users do not know how much to take – overdosing is a common occurrence, especially in younger and more inexperienced drug users and should be watched out for.

Many PCP users are brought to emergency rooms because of PCP’s unpleasant psychological effects or because of

overdoses. In a hospital or detention setting, they often become violent or suicidal, and are very dangerous to themselves and to others. They should be kept in a calm setting and should not be left alone.

HOW DOES IT MAKE YOU FEEL? PCP makes you dreamy and you have pleasant, floaty, trippy visions. Time and space become irrelevant and confused, just like they are in dreams (and nightmares). PCP's effects are unpredictable. Typically, they are felt within minutes of ingestion and last for several hours. Some users report feeling the drug's effects for days. One drug-taking episode may produce feelings of detachment from reality, including distortions of space, time, and body image; another may produce hallucinations, panic, and fear. Several users report feelings of invulnerability and exaggerated strength. PCP is famous for giving bad trips. Even in low doses, PCP can be a real freak out. Like other

hallucinogenic drugs, it can make you paranoid and anxious. It is quite common for people to have violent outbursts, attempt suicide or self mutilate on a bad trip.

This is the classic 'think you can fly' drug. People on PCP have been known to leap to their deaths and to drown in pools.

If you know someone who is acting differently and you fear they may be using PCP or a similar drug, take the time to seek out professional advice. The dangers are real and if help is not obtained as soon as possible, you could stand to lose that person not just to world of drugs, but to death. Serious drug users will usually stop spending time with their usual friends, will spend time during the day sleeping, seem detached from reality and the things that were once important to them and even appear to be extremely moody. Keep an eye out for the tell tale signs and remember to approach the situation with care.

It feels odd to be thinking about how we’ll tackle the new year that lies ahead of us when we are still in the throes of finishing up this one, but by the time you read

this article, you’ll hopefully be deep into your end-of-year break and building up an appetite for the year ahead. My approach to each new year hasn’t changed from those in an article that I wrote a year or two back, the essence of which was that we shouldn’t be planning our lives on a year-by-year basis driven by resolutions that we seldom fulfil and which empty out our integrity account. Planning, in essence, is strategy and strategy is about taking a long-term view of our intent and purpose and then coming up with smaller, achievable goals that can be pursued and adjusted to make them happen.

So if I’m not going to talk about the 10 ways to make your dreams come true in 2015, or

how to go from beggar to billionaire in six easy steps, what exactly am I going to tell you to focus your attention on for the new year? Here it is. To use an analogy, if you’ve set a game plan or vision for yourself (read striving to fulfil your purpose) and we equate this to a winding road that you follow, then you need a set of virtues to be your barriers to help you not to drift off purpose or path. There are tons of those, but the best ones that I’ve come across in my years of reading and learning are covered below.

wealth without workThe expression ‘time is money is’ founded on sage wisdom. One of the applications of this advice is to understand that, without investing time and effort, wealth cannot be created. Ideas and get-rich-quick schemes to generate easy wealth generally result in wasted and lost time which, at best, will set you back in

achieving your long-term goals and, at worst, will see you worse off than when you got distracted. Even if you do happen to stumble across wealth without difficulty, it is the hard work that develops the appreciation and it is the appreciation that drives gratitude, which ensures that wealth is maintained and not squandered.

Seeking Pleasure without conscienceThis is self-explanatory and has a sting in the tail. Pleasure without conscience has consequences and the impact of these consequences will result in a detour from your long-terms goals and achieving your purpose. Don’t let this distract you from what you want to achieve. The common thinking here is, ‘What’s in it for me?’ Which seeks short-term reward or gain without thinking of the long-term impact. Look for symbiotic and not parasitic experiences and engagements.

Knowledge without characterAs Martin Luther King, Jr put it, we live in a world of ‘guided missiles and misguided men,’ where few technical problems are too complex to solve, but where we find it impossible to cope with the most basic of life’s challenges. In our more lucid moments we see that we are doing great harm to ourselves and our planet but, somehow, for all our intellectual understanding, we cannot seem to change the way that we think and live. That change is brought about by character and the application of knowledge pertinent to the real challenges in our life.

Business without EthicsWhether you run your own business or are

employed, you’ll find that some of your goals will involve your career or your business and doing business with integrity and ethics is becoming harder than ever before. We have to question whether we can deem a goal reached if we’ve done it at the expense of our personal integrity or morals.

opinion without PrincipleLife in a small town can be fraught with perceived politics and opinion. Since opinion is your belief, or judgement, rested on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty, we have to be sure that our opinions are, at the very least, grounded on and voiced from strong principles. Principles are foundational and if we pursue purpose

and goals on strong foundations, as opposed to flimsy opinion alone, we are likely to be drawn into debate — or even argument — which again steals time, energy and focus.

As I have said, there are many virtues that we can address but these, for me, are good ones to focus on in the year ahead. Remember to set goals that are purpose-driven and are time-centric, but not time-focused. Apply these or other solid virtues to keep you on track and ensure that you don’t trip yourself up in the year ahead.

During the last school holidays, we were approached by a couple of blokes who ran a cricket camp for the boys on the Estate. The camp was held at our Greenbrier Community centre and by the sounds of things, it was a hit. This was a letter written to us by the guys who ran the camp and we’d like to thank them for their dedication and time. I’m sure we’ll see them again.

SIgHTIngS

Hi there, Thanks again for letting us run our cricket camp at the Greenbrier community centre, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and I'm guessing the kids did too! We received a lot of positive feedback from the parents and hope to run another camp before school starts in January.

“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.” ~ Apple Inc.

2. Sprinkle remaining salt and pepper over both sides of salmon. Coat a large nonstick skillet with cooking spray; heat over medium-high heat. Add fish (skin-side down) to skillet, and cook until skin is golden and fish releases easily from pan (about 4 minutes). Using a spatula, gently flip fish and cook about 3 minutes more. Break each fillet into 4 pieces; top salads with 3 pieces fish. Drizzle salads with reserved dressing; sprinkle with walnuts.
