AT&T’s cheaper data plans will attract more bees to the honey

Yesterday evening, AT&T announced its new data plans for the year 2010 which would be applicable after 7th June. Mark that 7th June is also the date set for the WWDC’2010 event and iPhone 4G’s expected launch day too. Yesterday AT&T spokesperson answered all the questions and clarified all sorts of conjectures; whether they were about iPhone and its relationship with AT&T or its network connectivity. He addressed few changes to the 3G data plans for all smart phones, which include iPhone and iPad too.

He presented a whole new scenario of pricing scheme for 3G data plans from AT&T. The most shocking bit of the new plan is the elimination of unlimited package. AT&T won’t be offering unlimited data plans anymore. I guess most customers will gather monthly savings of $5 to $15 through this, as they won’t run for excessive connectivity usage.

Pricing for the new plans are much reduced as compared to the old data plans. It will only cost $15 for 200 MB. If customers choose to download more than 200 MB within the sustained package they will be charged additionally; $15 for next 200 MB. iPad customers get 250 MB connectivity in just $15 per month.

The reason why AT&T dropped the unlimited package in its new data plan is because the plan had a flaw. 65% of the AT&T customers used less than 200 MB per month, on average, and 98% used less than 2 GB. Percentages were unexpectedly lower on the iPhone and iPad, so it wasn’t smart enough to continue with unlimited plans.

Neglecting connectivity issues, the low-priced scheme might just bring significant number of customers to the AT&T board. Principal research analyst at Gartner, Hugues De La Vergne said “We expect a good number of people indulging in the iPhone cloud due to this lowered plans and costs of an efficient Smartphone ownership.”

Also AT&T’s mobile unit President, Ralph de la Vega mentions that “We’re breaking free from the traditional ‘one-size-fits-all’ pricing model and making the mobile Internet more affordable to a greater number of people.”
