3 ITP LOGBOOK AUGUST 2012

Professional recognition — in other words, your certi!cation as a technology professional through ASTTBC — is a key step in your career as a technologist or technician.

The Internationally Trained Professional Logbook or ITP Logbook will assist Provisional certi!ed technologists and technicians of ASTTBC to understand how to earn fully certi!ed status.

Internationally trained professionals or ITPs can use this logbook to document work experience with speci!c reference to established National Technology Benchmarks and performance indicators. The log will provide the ASTTBC Board of Examiners with a clear picture of your responsibilities and achievements.

This logbook should be maintained and submitted as indicated in support of your application for reclassi!cation to a fully certi!ed technician or technologist.

4 ITP LOGBOOK AUGUST 2012

Members registered as Provisional who would like to obtain fully certi!ed member status should refer to the following procedures as a guide through the endorsement process.

Endorsement Description

Your ITP Log will indicate the general competencies and job performance indicators needed in order to obtain applicable work experience to support your reclassi!cation e"orts. Each competency listed must be ‘signed-o" ’ or endorsed by a quali!ed sponsor. A sponsor will most likely be your employer and can include your immediate supervisor. It will be their job to endorse that you have obtained the listed work experience or equivalent. The endorsement process is the basis for assessing competency and work experience in Canada has been obtained to support your reclassi!cation e"orts. The process relies on complete information from the applicant and the integrity and participation of the endorsing sponsor(s) and references.

Endorsement Procedure

An endorsing sponsor is responsible for ensuring that the applicant has satisfactorily demonstrated all aspects of the required competencies and abilities prior to the ‘sign-o" ’ or endorsement. The sponsor must be your employer and be a professional recognized by ASTTBC. It is common for a sponsor to hold designations such as P.Eng, MAIBC, AScT, or CTech. For a full listing of recognized sponsors refer to the listing in this logbook.

The sponsor must complete all sections needed in the Endorsement Sign-O" Form and provide their signature and stamp (where applicable). The form must also be completed in full by both the applicant and sponsor. The endorsement form can then be submitted to ASTTBC for consideration.

Any other questions?

If you have any other questions regarding the reclassi!cation or your logbook requirements, please call ASTTBC at (604) 585-2788 and ask to speak with a member of our Registrations Team.

5 ITP LOGBOOK AUGUST 2012

Members who have been awarded a Provisional membership are eligible to apply for reclassi!cation to the fully certi!ed designation using this logbook to help validate work experience requirements. For example, the AScT (Provisional) individual will reclassify to the AScT designation, and, the CTech (Provisional) designation will to the CTech designation.

The following information answers some basic questions about the requirements needed for recerti!cation from Provisional to fully certi!ed.

What is involved in getting reclassi!ed?

The certi!cation process has been designed to recognize work experience and on-the-job training as a means to satisfy 1-year of mandatory work experience in Canada. These guidelines and sign-o" forms will help an Internationally Trained Professional (ITP) with a provisional designation from ASTTBC achieve a fully certi!ed credential. In order to be successful, your employer/supervisor must be involved and is responsible for endorsing your indicated work experience. This log is a critical component of the application for reclassi!cation to remove the Provisional categorization.

How long do I have before I must submit my Logbook?

According to the Board of Examiners’ Certi!cation Policy, Provisional members have up to 3 years to obtain the necessary Canadian work experience commensurate with the level of certi!cation sought. If you feel you may exceed this time frame, you must contact ASTTBC for further direction.

Who will evaluates my credentials?

All applicants are a#rmatively evaluated by the ASTTBC Board of Examiners, which is comprised of senior representatives from industry, government, educational institutes and technical/professional associations. The Board is responsible for assessing quali!cations and approving certi!cation.

How is my work experience assessed?

Your logbook will be speci!c as to the technical competencies and job performance indicators required in order to support your application for reclassi!cation. These performance indicators, along with other experience descriptions provided will allow the Board to compare your work experience with the accepted level of work and responsibility levels commensurate with a certi!ed technologist or technician. ASTTBC expects that a completed logbook and a valid endorsement be provided in your submission in order to move forward with assessing your experience adequately.

What are the National Technology Benchmarks or NTBs?

In Canada, we refer to National Technology Benchmarks (NTB) to de!ne the education accreditation benchmarks. Each discipline (ie/ Civil, Mechanical, Environmental, etc) will have its own NTB. The NTB for each discipline includes a number of main COMPETENCIES. Each competency then has corresponding INDICATORS OF PERFORMANCE in support of the main competency.

What are technical competencies and performance indicators?

Competencies will show baseline concepts and requirements inherent of that particular engineering or applied science discipline. Performance indicators are statements or examples of job functions that SUPPORT the competencies.

How many competencies and indicators am I supposed to have to reclassify?

You must have a minimum of 5 competencies, each of which requires 1 or more supporting indicators of performance.

Where can I !nd a listing of the COMPETENCIES and INDICATORS OF PERFORMANCE from the National Technology Benchmarks?

The National Technology Benchmarks (NTB), Competencies and Performance Indicators for each discipline can be found here: http://www.cctt.ca/landing_7.asp

Do I submit the ITP Log to ASTTBC?

You will be required to send an electronic scan of the applicable sections including ALL endorsement forms from the Log at the time of making application for reclassi!cation. Do not send originals. Do include any copies of additional training, work history that may be associated with your work experience.

To whom will I submit this information when ready?

Contact the ASTTBC o#ce and ask to speak with one of our Registration sta" members. They will assist you with the process.

How should I describe my experience?

Your logbook should list any job performance indicators and competencies you’ve ful!lled in order for you to reclassify. You will be required to ensure you’ve obtained the necessary work experience as indicated and then obtain an endorsement from your employer/supervisor.

Who can is eligible to endorse my ITP log?

Your direct employer must act as the party to endorse your logbook forms. Their endorsement indicates that you’ve completed the work experience indicators to show competency at the level of full certi!cation you seek. This includes immediate supervisors, P.Eng, AScT, MAIBC or other individuals who can attest to your level of competency. If you are unsure if the person you’ve selected quali!es, be safe and please contact ASTTBC for clari!cation or direction.

How long does it take to get certi!ed?

This depends on the time of year the application is made. The Board usually meets 3 times a year. Your application will be compiled and presented to the earliest Board meeting. The process may take up to 4 months. It is best to contact ASTTBC to seek clari!cation on time lines.

What happens when I get certi!ed?

After the Board approves your reclassi!cation request, you will receive a letter of con!rmation and an updated certi!cate with the appropriate registration classi!cation.

What happens if my application for reclassi!cation is not successful?

The Board will provide you with reasons for their decision and may provide you with other recommendations.

May I appeal a decision of the Board?

If you are not satis!ed with the decision of the Board you may appeal the decision and the Board will appoint a special reviewer to reconsider your application.

Any other questions?

If you have any other questions regarding the reclassi!cation or your logbook requirements, please call ASTTBC at (604) 585-2788 and ask to speak with a member of our Registrations Team.
