CHRIST KINGCATHOLIC SCHOOL

THE

Christ the Kingcatholic school

A Le'er ()* Monsigno+ Ric,a+- P!.rini Dear Christ the King Family,

As we complete another year in the dynamic ministry of Christ the King Catholic School, we reflect on the many transformations our school has had over its 49-year history. From our small beginnings in 1964 to the thriving parish school we are today, our parish community has supported every step we have taken along this journey. And, we are blessed to say, that throughout these years our primary mission has never changed, to provide a quality academic education within the context of our Catholic faith.

Catholic education is not only the work of the dedicated staff of Christ the King, nor solely the work of those parents who send their children to our school. Rather, it is the work of the entire community. The success of Christ the King Catholic School is due in no small way to your generosity, love and support. Your financial contributions, your hours of donated service and your commitment to our future have helped our school succeed. Your dedication to providing a faith-filled education for all who seek one, is truly a gift to our Christ the King family.

It is my hope that all the children of Christ the King Catholic School can come to know the love of God as revealed in the person of Jesus Christ, find respect from those of us who serve here at our parish school and come to realize the great plan God has for each one of them. Of course, the ultimate fact is that God wants each of us to be free. This freedom is found only in becoming what God wants us to be. It is my hope that Christ the King School can help every child to realize their freedom by becoming exactly who God has designed them to be for all eternity. Let us pray together that this reality will be achieved at Christ the King School.

Please be assured of my prayers for you.I am indeed grateful.

Sincerely in Christ Jesus,

Rev. Msgr. Richard Paperini

This is my fourth year at Christ the King and my fourteenth year in education. I came to Christ the King because, as a lifelong Catholic, I wanted to combine my faith and my vocation as a teacher. What I see everyday is a parish and school community that cares deeply about their faith and each other.

I am delighted and thankful to share with you that our parish school is thriving. We have over 250 students, of which approximately 83% of our students are Catholic and that number is growing each year. Nearly 40% of our students are minorities, representing 11 different languages spoken at home.

As a mission of our parish, our students, parents, and staff are committed to serving our community in a variety of ways. Our parents serve on numerous parish ministries and volunteer across our community. The Parent Community Organization (PCO) supports multiple community building events such as the Ice Cream Social & BBQ, the Fall Festival, Father-Daughter Dance, Family Bowling Night, and Family Movie Night to name a few. In addition to supporting specific classroom community service projects, our school staff is currently sponsoring a teacher in the Congo through the Light of Africa program. Our students are involved in numerous service projects every year including - collecting over 2,000 pounds of food for the Christ the King chapter of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, raising money for the American Cancer Society and the Madonna Center Baby Shower Drive. In addition, our students help support Christ the King’s Helping Hands & Open Arms ministry and St. Andre Bessette Downtown Chapel. Our middle school students serve numerous parish ministries including - Altar serving, helping with the Knights of Columbus dinner, and collecting items for the Christmas Food Boxes to name just a few. Last year our eighty middle school students completed 5,292 hours of community service. This is an average of 66 hours/student - more than double the school requirement. How amazing is this!

We continue to offer a rich academic program that includes the core subjects plus Library, Art, PE, Spanish, Music, and integrated technology. However, the foundation of our school continues to be our Catholic identity and our religion curriculum. Every week begins with a student led school-wide prayer service and all students attend Mass on Wednesday mornings. All school days begin with daily prayer and every grade has religion classes and multiple opportunities for prayer. In addition, this year we are thrilled to have Dr. Elaine Park

working closely with every class in their religious instruction.

We are blessed to have a diverse community that works together to provide the children of our school a positive and challenging education. The creativity and dedication of teachers, staff and parent volunteers inspires our children to make the most of their God-given capabilities.

We give thanks and look to the years ahead with faith and gratitude for the overwhelming support our school receives from each of you. May God continue to bless each of you and our school community.

Q. What is the difference between the 3 Funds supporting CTK?A. Annual Fund: The Annual Fund appeal supports the school’s operational budget. The cost of educating each child exceeds tuition revenue and the parish subsidy. The Annual Fund helps to fill this “gap” and maintain lower annual tuition increases.Endowment for Education Fund: The Endowment for Education Fund provides for the long-term viability of the school. The funds are invested by the Archdiocese to provide a permanent provision of support for Christ the King Catholic School. During the 2012-2013 school year, the Endowment for Education Fund provided $10,000 for tuition assistance to our students.Tuition Assistance (Support-A-Student): Tuition Assistance aids qualifying Catholic families to pay tuition, both annually and in cases of emergency. This year nearly one third of our students received tuition assistance, ranging from 6 to 80% of annual tuition cost. The average award is approximately $1,500.

Q. What is the timeline for the Campaigns?A. Donations are accepted year round. The Joseph E. Weston Foundation matches up to $10,000 for non-parent Tuition Assistance and up to $15,000 for CEED Endowment Fund. This is a great opportunity to double your gift! The campaign concludes June 30, 2014.

Q. Can a person charge a gift, or have donations automatically deducted from achecking or savings account?A. Yes to both! Donors can charge their Annual Fund gift to their credit card. Gifts can be charged online at the school website (www.ctkweb.org). Donors can request gifts be deducted electronically from a checking or

savings account following completion of a VANCO authorization form available from the school Development office by calling (503) 785-2418 or checking online at www.ctkweb.org under the Support CTK link on the homepage.

Q. Can my gift be matched by my employer and/or United Way?A. Depending on the donor’s employer, most charitable gifts to an elementary school can be matched. A matching gifts brochure listing participating employers is available from the school, or a donor can contact his/her company’s Human Relations office. United Way contributions also can be directed to Christ the King Catholic School.

Q. How do the students and school give back to our parish and local community?A. Within our parish, students support the Altar Society, Madonna Center Baby Shower and Holiday Cookie Faire, Helping Hands, St. Vincent de Paul Society Thanksgiving Food Drive, Downtown Chapel Penny Power Campaign, Oregon Humane Society, St. Francis Dining Hall, plus give over 300 hours annually in service as altar servers for liturgies. Last year, our middle school students contributed over 5,292 hours of service to our various parish ministries and local community.
