Over the years, several worldrenowned mediumsdemonstrating both physicaland trance mediumship, haveshown evidence of life after aphysical death. Ourmagazine, website, workshops, lectures andséances have shown manypeople the reality of a lifeafter death.

For everyone who has hadthe opportunity to experiencethese events, we thank youfor the love and the energyyou have given to Zerdin andthe mediums that havepresented their gift.

As we look to the future it isvery important for us tomake the world aware of ourhistory, pioneers and thesacrifice they have made.

Zerdin is now producing aneducation programme on thehistory of physicalmediumship, offering thoseattending the opportunity tolisten and view over 180visuals. These includephotographic evidence ofsurvival after physical deathalong with our séances,

showing the world wesurvive death and go onexisting.

Everybody and everyoneneeds to grow. Zerdin, a not-for-profit organisation is noexception. For us to do moreand show the world thisgreat truth it will take twoelements: HARD WORK ANDMONEY.

Life After Death:Some of the

Best Evidenceby Jan W. Vandersande Ph.D.

It’s the essential-and seeminglyunknowable-question that hashaunted mankind since thebeginning: What happens afterwe die? In Life After Death:Some of the Best Evidence, renowned physicist Dr. Jan W.Vandersande surveys evidencefor an afterlife and finds a lot ofthe observed physicalphenomena both credible andcompelling.Intended for sceptics andbelievers alike, Life After Deathcondenses more than 100 yearsof literature and testimony-including the author’s ownpsychic experiences as a longtime member of a psychic circle-to sort out the astonishing fromthe fraudulent. The investigationgives readers a front-row seat toséance rooms to experience suchmarvels as direct voice, ectoplasm and materializations-messages and events, he shows, that are directed from beyondthe grave. As the book makesclear, the occurrences duringsuch episodes, thoughfantastical, can’t be dismissed asmere fantasy or fraud.Through historical accounts, photographs and personalexperience, this engaginglywritten work adds to a growingbody of evidence for theexistence of an afterlife that’sincreasingly difficult to ignore.

About the Author, Jan W.Vandersande Ph.D.Jan W. Vandersande, Ph.D., haspublished more than 80 scientificarticles so brings a wealth oftechnical expertise to bear onthe subject. He holds a doctoratein physics and has servedprofessorships at the Universityof Witwatersand, South Africa, as well as Cornell University. Dr. Vandersande has worked atthe Jet Propulsion Laboratory andis currently the communicationsdirector for VIASPACE Inc. Hespends a lot of his spare timereading about, analyzing andwriting about psychicphenomena.

internationally respectedscientist, physicist, philosopher and musiclover, and Gemilli asPresident of the PapalAcademy. On September15, 1952, while the menwere recording a Gregorianchant, a wire in theirequipment kept breaking.Exasperated, Gemilli lookedup and asked his deadfather for help. To hisamazement his fathersvoice was heard saying: ‘Of course I shall help you.I’m always with you’. Theyrepeated the experiment, and the voice, even clearerthan before, said: ‘ButZucchini, it is clear, don’tyou know it is I?’. Gemilli was astounded. Noone knew the nickname hisfather had teased him withwhen he was a boy. It mustbe my father, he thought, suddenly afraid for as aCatholic priest he had noright to speak with thedead. Troubled, the twomen eventually sought anaudience with Pope Pius XIIin Rome. Gemilli told thePontiff of his experience, and was to his very greatsurprise, immediatelyreassured. According to the1990 translated text of hismeeting, Pope Pius toldGemilli: ‘You really neednot worry about this. Theexistence of this voice isstrictly a scientific fact andhas nothing whatsoever todo with spiritism. Therecorder is totally objective.

It receives and recordssound waves fromwherever they come. Thisexperiment may perhapsbecome the cornerstone fora building for scientificstudies which willstrengthen people’s faith ina hereafter’. Yet even thispapal reassurance was notenough to convinceCatholicism that thephenomenon meritedfurther attention. And therethe matter lay until thespirit world turned itsattention to the manwidely regarded as thefounding father of EVP,Friedrich Juergenson (aslightly unfair epithet as itwas two men fromCalifornia, the mediumAttila Von Szalay andparanormal researcherRaymond Bayless whoreally initiated the modernEVP era. In 1956, theyrecorded, quite by chance,a series of paranormalvoices on magnetic tape, voices that should notlogically have been there.Though Bayless reportedtheir experiments in theJournal of the AmericanSociety for PsychicalResearch, not a singleperson contacted thesociety, or the researchersto enquire about theirwork). Juergenson was a filmproducer in Sweden who,in 1959 while making adocumentary, had decidedto tape bird songs. As he

began recording, little didhe realise that whatfollowed would change thecourse of not only hisearthly life, but of that hewould lead in the worldbeyond after his death. When he played the tapeback he was startled tohear, in among thetweeting and chirping, hismother’s voice say inGerman:‘Friedrich, you are beingwatched. Friedel, my littleFriedel, can you hear me?’In later years Juergensonsaid that when he heardhis mother’s voice he wasconvinced he had made ‘an important discovery’.An understatement if everthere was one. Since then,EVP, as it became known, has been investigated bymany psychical researchers, including most notably DrKonstantin Raudive fromLatvia, the USA’s SarahEstep, and in the UKRaymond Cass and GeorgeBonner. Raudive was a Latvianpsychologist who had readJuergenson’s book ‘RadioContact with the Dead’with a great deal ofscepticism when it wastranslated into German in1967. Nevertheless he wasintrigued, and over severalyears carried out hundredsof experiments underlaboratory conditions.Perhaps the mostmemorable from ascientific perspective was

that conducted at theGerman headquarters ofPye Records in 1971. Theengineers at Pye hadinvited Raudive to do acontrolled experiment inthe special sound lab thatblocked out all externalradio and television signals. They taped his voicespeaking into a microphonefor eighteen minutes – andheard no other sounds. Butwhen they played the tapeback they were amazed tofind over two hundredvoices on it. In the years that followedJuergenson and Raudive, atrail blazed that manyothers attempted to follow. But constant criticism thatthe EVP was nothing morethan ambient soundsprocessed by the mind intoa semblance of speech orsnatches of police radio, dampened enthusiasm forresearch in Europe. Duringthe 1970s and early 80s inthe United States, however,it continued to evolve withmuch of the workspearheaded by a retiredengineer, George Meek. Opening a small laboratorywith a friend inPhiladelphia in 1971, aftera lifetime’s interest in theparanormal he becameimmersed in EVP – andsoon realised its limitations.Meek was convinced thatfor electroniccommunication with thedead to really make itsmark, apparatus more

L ooking back throughSpiritualist archives insearch of some sign

that communication withthe so-called dead wouldsome day evolve to fit inwith the modern age, itwas reading the works ofTheosophist Alice Baileythat I found what I waslooking for. Bailey was nota Spiritualist – I think shewould have shuddered atthat description – butnevertheless her writingsoffer the student ofspiritual science a greatdeal. In 1936 Bailey’s greatteacher, the Tibetan MasterDK, whose words shefaithfully transcribed over a20-year period dictatedthese words: ‘Within thenext few years, the fact ofthe eternity of existencewill have advanced fromthe realm of questioninginto the realm of certainty.Through the use of theradio by those who havepassed over, willcommunication be set up

and reduced to a truescience’.Was this a prophecy basedentirely upon inner planeinsights? Students of EVPmight think so because itwas not until 1959 thatSwedish film producerFriedrich Juergensonfamously captured voiceson audiotape while tapingbird songs – more of whichI’ll describe later. But if you trawl backthrough psychical history tothe beginning of thiscentury, you will findreference to a little knownAmerican anthropologistnamed Waldemar Bogoras. For it was he whoconducted the first knownexperiment in which voicesof ‘conjured spirits’ wererecorded on an electricalrecording device. Bogoraswas on a trip to Siberia tovisit a shaman of theTchoutchi tribe when hisexperience took place. In adarkened room, he

Mounting evidence suggests thatcommunication between this world and thenext may one day be achieved by turningon your television. A growing number ofresearchers world-wide are receiving spiritworld messages and pictures throughradios, computers and even fax machines. The breakthrough is called ‘InstrumentalTranscommunication’ – ITC for short – andis the collective term for conversing withthe other side using electronicinstrumentation.

observed a spirit conjuringritual that entailed theshaman beating a drummore and more rapidlywhile entering a trancestate. Startled, Bogorasheard strange voices fillingthe room. The voicesseemed to come from allcorners and spoke Englishand Russian. After thesession, Borgoras wrote: ‘I set up my equipment so Icould record without thelight. The shaman sat inthe furthest corner of theroom, approximately 20feet away from me. Whenthe light was extinguishedthe spirits appeared aftersome hesitation and, following the wishes of theshaman, spoke into thehorn of the phonograph. The recording showed aclear difference betweenthe speech of the shaman(audible in thebackground), and the spiritvoices which seemed tohave been located directlyat the mouth of the horn. All along the shaman’sceaseless drumbeats couldbe heard as if to prove thathe remained in the samespot’.It was 25 years, however, before there was to be anyattempt to record spiritvoices in the West. At theforefront of research wasthe eminent scientistThomas Alva Edison, inventor of the electriclight, who together withhis assistant Dr Miller

Hutchinson was busily atwork in his laboratorybuilding a machine toachieve spiritcommunication. In his diaryHutchinson wrote: ‘Edisonand I are convinced that inthe fields of psychicresearch will yet bediscovered facts that willprove of greatersignificance to the thinkingof the human race than allthe inventions we haveever made in the field ofelectricity’.Edison was to pass beforeachieving his goal, but ashe lay dying he said to hisdoctor: ‘It is very beautifulover there’. A remark froma man of science, whowould only have uttered itif he’d seen reality with hisown eyes, perhaps? (Edisonwas to return nearly 70years later as an integralpart of the ITC team onearth. His image and thatof filmmaker George Cukor, who died in 1983,appeared on a computer inLuxembourg in 1991). It was in the 1950s that thebaton was picked up, albeitunintentionally, in Italy bytwo Catholic priests, FatherErnetti and Father Gemilli. However, you will not findtheir names in any historyof EVP written before 1990because the results of their‘experiment’ were notpublished until then. The equipment was set upunder the watchful eye ofthe Radio Luxembourgengineers. The device, nicknamed ‘Koenig’sGenerator’ by programmepresenter Rainer Holbe, was connected to a set ofspeakers and switched on.An engineer asked if voicescame through on requestand within seconds, a clearvoice was heard. It saidquite simply: ‘Otto Koenigmakes wireless with thedead’. Understandablypandemonium broke out.Another question wasasked and seconds later avoice replied: ‘We hearyour voice’. Rainer Holbeaffirmed live on air therehad been no trickery andlater the station issued astatement stating that itsengineers had found nonatural explanation forwhat had happened. Soonafter, the device wasdemonstrated to membersof the German EVPAssociation in Frankfurtwhere Konstantin Raudive, who had died in 1974,confirmed his presence. Onthe strength of this, one ofKoenigs associates Dr ErnstSenkowski, a physicslecturer, electronics expertand veteran EVP researcher, persuaded George Meek tofly to Germany. After a demonstration ofthe Koenig’s Generator,Meek flew back convincedit was genuine and set

about raising money tofund future work. But ayear later in 1985, themantle was picked up notby Hans-Otto Koenig, butby a Swiss electronicsexpert, Klaus Schreiberwho, as a result of studyingMeek’s Spiritcom designshad invented an apparatushe called ‘Vidicom’. Itconsisted of a speciallyadapted TV, switched onbut not attached to anaerial, with a video camerain front of it to captureimages that appeared onthe screen. One of the firstpictures he received was ablurred, fleeting image of afigure. Over the next fewyears until his death in1988, faces of deceasedrelatives also appeared;some of the images weresharp, some not.Schreiber’s friend MartinWenzel continued his workwith some success, but aswith Spiritcom theSchreiber method, to workeffectively, needed to beused by someone with thesensitivity of a psychic andstrong inner plane links. Maggy Harsch-Fishbachbegan experimenting withEVP in 1984. Although herhusband Jules was initiallysceptical of thephenomenon, she gainedsuch positive results thathe became convinced theother worldly voices weregenuine. For the first yearand a half, their results

were typical of what otherEVP experimenters obtain, but in 1986 they received amessage which was tochange significantly theway they worked. TheHarsch-Fishbachs were toldby spirit communicators ona radio link dubbed the‘Eurosignal Bridge’ to tunetheir TV set to an inactivechannel and disconnect theaerial. Setting up a videocamera two metres awayfrom the set, they beganrecording. ‘We noticed severalflashing images on the TVscreen’, recalls Maggie, ‘butthese were of such shortduration that no detailscould be discerned. Therecording lasted 10minutes. The tape wasreplayed in very slowmotion and within a fewframes, an image of a manappeared who was wellknown to us from previousaudio communications’.Through the EurosignalBridge, the man told themthat a research group wasbeing formed on the otherside and that they must dolikewise on earth. So onOctober 16, 1986, theHarsch-Fishbachs foundedthe Luxembourg StudyCircle inTranscommunication – CETL– and soon after, an entitycalling himself ‘Technician’made contact and beganco-coordinating activities. He would tell the couple

when a message wasgoing to be transmitted oran image was due toappear, so everything couldbe recorded. Uniquely, theHarsch-Fishbachs were ableto conduct two-wayconversations with theirnew-found spirit friends.(This system, still in usetoday, can only be usedeffectively when less thanfour people are present. When larger groups are inthe recording room, theHarsch-Fishbachs use theEurosignal Bridge, whatthey call ‘a personal pagingsystem’ operating on theFM waveband. This secondmethod allows the spiritworld to communicate, butnot for anybody on earth torespond). In 1988,Technician informed thecouple that they had beenselected as the earthboundcolleagues of ‘Timestream’,which was the collectivename for the group of spiritbeings banded togetherspecifically to strengthenand develop the link thathad been achievedbetween their world – thethird astral level – andearth. As the link becameestablished, so thecommunications increasednot only via the EurosignalBridge and on TV, but alsoon a computer, where textand images would appearovernight in special files. Well-known English authorand traveller Richard

sophisticated than he hadfound on his travels inEurope would be necessary. The way to go aboutbuilding this, he decided, was to contact someonewho had passed on andwork with him and histeam in achieving two-waycommunication. Meekwrote to the now defunctAmerican magazine ThePsychic Observer, which puthim in touch with BillO’Neil, an electronicsengineer who was also avery gifted clairaudient andclairvoyant. Through him,Meeks team, later to formthemselves into the ‘MetaScience Foundation’, madecontact with a man whohad been dead for fiveyears and who was amedical doctor while onearth. ‘Doc Nick’, as he becameknown, suggested to O’Neilthat the team use certainaudio frequencies insteadof the white noisetraditionally used by EVPresearchers. This, he said, would serve as an energysource against which thesounds produced by hisvocal cords could beplayed. It worked. Soon

after, a spirit being callinghimself Dr George JeffriesMueller, was recruited tothe team – or rather heannounced he had come tojoin them aftermaterialising one afternoonin O’Neil’s living room.Mueller was a deaduniversity professor andNASA scientist. He toldMeek and O’Neil he haddied in 1967 and gavethem numerous facts withwhich to verify his identityincluding his securitynumber; the place wherehis death certificate couldbe found; and intimatedetails of his life andscholastic achievements. All of them checked out.He began communicatingregularly; helping to designa new piece ofelectromagnetic equipmentthat would convert spiritvoices to audible voices. On October 27, 1977, hisfirst words were recordedon the new system Meekcalled ‘Spiritcom’.Tapes of the Muellerconversations werereleased to the public andmake fascinating listening. You can plainly hearMueller joking with Meek

and O’Neil and discussingtopics, from his favouritefoods to the view of timefrom the spirit world. Hegives unlisted telephonenumbers asking them tomake calls to confirm theidentity (which they didsuccessfully) of the peopleat the other end (usuallytop-level governmentpersonnel); and he givesO’Neil precise directionswith which to help buildexperimental videoequipment.

The clarity of thecommunications is quiteastounding – andsometimes amusing: in oneconversation, Muelleridentifies a problem with aparticular device andimpatiently barks at O’Neil:

‘The fault lies in animpedance mis-matchwhich can be corrected byusing a 150 ohm half-wattresistor in parallel with a0.0047 microfad ceramiccapacitor’. But Muellereventually broke contactafter telling Meek andO’Neil that natural lawmeant he could ‘not behere forever’. (He did infact return once more to a

group of ITC researchersworking in Rivenick,Germany, led by AdolphHomes. In 1991 theyreceived on a TV screen animage which wasunmistakably that of DrMueller). Meek concludedthat Mueller’sconsciousness hadexpanded to such a pointthat Spiritcom could not beused for communication, soexposing one of its flaws. Ithad become clear that themost limiting aspect of thedevice was the fact that itdepended almost entirelyon the operator possessingmediumistic or psychicabilities, like O’Neil. GeorgeMeek fully accepted thisand never patentedSpiritcom in the hope thatscience would carry on hiswork and take it to thenext step, going beyondwhat he and O’Neil wereable to accomplish. In 1982 he held a pressconference in Washington,USA and revealedSpiritcom’s secrets. Theconference made littleimpact on a largelysceptical world; in fact alarge section of the mediaeven refused to attend, sothe device went largelyunreported – except by thetabloids that naturallypoked fun. Since then, thefocus of attention in termsof results switched toEurope. Nine months afterMeek went public, onJanuary 15, 1982, anelectronics engineer Hans-Otto Koenig, helped thenow defunct RadioLuxembourg broadcast live, what was claimed to be atwo-way conversation witha dead person. Koenig hadinvented an ultrasounddevice after closelyfollowing Meeks workwhich, he claimed, couldreplicate the Spiritcom andMueller O’Neil dialogues.

They were Walter Uphofffrom Wisconsin, SarahEstep, president of theAmerican EVP Association, from Maryland, andveteran researcher GeorgeMeek, based in NorthCarolina. Meek, theinventor of Spiritcom, hadbeen in touch with CETLand knew of its activities. He managed to record thisensuing conversation: George: ‘Good morning, this is George Meek’. Raudive: ‘This is KonstantinRaudive. George, my friend,at last we succeed incontacting you. Jeannette(Meek’s wife) is beside meand she wants to give youall her love. This isKonstantin Raudive. This isthe first contact you getfrom us. I suppose you canhear me’? George: ‘I can hear youvery well, very plainly’. Raudive: ‘This is thebeginning of a new story, a new chapter George. Youare a good friend of ourseven if we havent met. We will continue this. Thisis the bridge we havesucceeded to build (sic) tothe States. Mark (Macy)was contacted. I mustinterrupt now’.Timestream had achievedits aim by contacting ITCworkers in Rivenich,Germany, and in the USA,as well as maintainingregular communicationwith CETL in Luxembourg.

But what next? Willanybody soon be able toswitch on a computer, radio, TV and speak to thespirit world? Not yet. Onesuspects that the fruit ofthe Harsch-Fishbachspioneering research maywell not be tasted untilwell into the next century. But when the time is right, the widespread acceptanceof life after death, throughITC or physical mediumship(or both), will surely leadto a leap in humanconsciousness; the like ofwhich can barely beimagined.Ernst Mackes reports back:On November 26, 1992,Maggy and Jules Harsch-Fishbach said farewell toErnst Mackes, who diedafter a long anddebilitating illness. Ernstand his wife Margret, whopassed in April 1987, hadenjoyed a close friendshipwith Maggy and Jules. It was a friendship that so-called death could notseparate, for on February 4,1993, the Harsch-Fishbachsreceived the followingletter from Ernst on theircomputer:‘At the moment, I amsitting here under a roof ofexotic palm tree leaves. I am trying to focus mythoughts into a sort oftypewriter, which is sittingin front of me on the glassplate of a small bambootable. I hope you both

started the New Year well.Thank God, all is well here, too. I shall try to start mystory from the beginning. As you both know, onNovember, 26, the body ofErnst Mackes was left inthe earthly dimension andmy soul was set free.During the last few years itcould manifest only weaklyover my sick body. Nobodywho has not gone througha similar experience willknow the agony of notbeing able to communicatewith your surroundings. I was in the position of apilot who could not controlhis aircraft any more, butall this is over, and now Iam here I have finallyfound my beloved Margretagain. When I arrived, Iwas understandablyconfused. Because of myillness, I could notimmediately think and seeclearly. With the help of myfather and other friends, I soon learned to use mymental and physicalpowers again. Wounds andamputations take sometime to heal andregenerate here. Old agereverts backwards everyhour; one gradually feels astrength flow back into abody that was lost longago. For people who arementally disabled, thisrecovery happens slowlyand in steps. I am now theold Ernst again . . . or,should I say, the new Ernst!Above me is the light of

our three suns.Temperatures are verymoderate, and in the clearmorning air numerousmulti-colouredhummingbirds are buzzingaround me. Butterflies ofincredible beauty areflapping their wings andsettling on blossoms andplants. Before me is arefreshing glass oflemonade. In the distance, the sunlight is reflecting inthe river of eternity, whichis visible behind a sandybeach. Margret and I oftenswim in the pleasant waterand enjoy our newlydiscovered young bodies’.One month after the abovewas received; Maggy andJules were astounded tofind an image of Ernst ontheir computer. He waspictured sitting at a deskwearing a jacket and tie.The short snatch of textthat accompanied thepicture said it showed himcomposing the previousday’s letter. It had, he said, been sent to CETL on hisbehalf by Swejen Salter.

Francis Burton (1821- 90)joined the spirit team andtransmitted longdescriptions of his journeysthrough the astral planes, especially along what hecalled the River of Eternity:EVP pioneers FriedrichJuergenson and KonstantinRaudive ‘returned home’ toconfirm they were helpingto develop ITC technology;and a femalecommunicator callingherself Swejen Salterintroduced herself. In the years that followed,Salter effectively took overTechnician’s role as spirit-side project leader andformed a warm relationshipwith the Harsch-Fishbachs.Below is a summary ofreports received, viacomputer and telephone, which she gave describingthe world in which shelived: ‘We live in a worldthat is similar to yourworld. We have a body likeyours. This body is anetheric substance of muchhigher vibration than yourdense body in your densematerial world. No diseasesexist here. Missing bodylimbs grown again. Bodiesthat were amputated onearth will here beregenerated. We live incomfortably furnishedhomes. The surroundinglandscapes are impressiveand beautiful. The averageage of all those whopassed over to us becomes25 to 30 years. If they diedin old age they awakenhere in full consciousnessafter a regenerating sleepwhich lasts about six weeksof earth time. In somecases it can be shorter. Thechildren arriving on thethird level are lovinglyaccepted and cared for bytheir relatives who livehere. The children continuegrowing up until they have

reached the age of 25 to30 years. Approximately 60billion humanoids from allexisting worlds congregatehere. They continue tocultivate friendships andpartnerships. We eat anddrink like you do, but ourfood is producedsynthetically. To put itanother way, wematerialise physical food. The meat which some stillenjoy here is only areproduction of matter. No animal has to die foranother being. Manyanimal species exist herewhich are unknown onearth, such as birds ofparadise-like birds andcolourful butterflies. Thetemperature is very mild.Personality and characterare not changed by theprocess of dying. You donot wake up on the thirdplane with newknowledge. Though there isno more physical pain here,we still know mentalanguish and the pain of thesoul. The third human levelis on a planet we callMarduk which is separatedfrom earth by time andspace and cannot bespatially located. It hasthree suns. The planetrevolves around one sunand is illuminated by theothers. It never gets totallydark. Its moon is largerthan the earth moon. Asingle large river, the Riverof Eternity, crosses theentire planet. The thirdhuman plane is a productof the human mind, but isas much a reality as earthitself. People with thesame ideas and viewscome together in groupsand form units whichbecome the preliminarystep to the fourth plane. After coming into thefourth plane, the person isfreed from the law ofreincarnation.

To establish these contactswith you, we have to getclose to your physical worldand adjust to you as wellas we can. A number ofthe communicatorsincluding Salter, Raudiveand Juergenson amongothers, do not reside, itseems, on the third astrallevel, but on the fourth, orupper astral level. They‘come down’ to level threeto transmit messages whenallowed’.CETL is not the only team tohave linked uptechnologically with theSpirit World. ResearcherAdolph Holmes based inRivenich, Germany, hasmade contact with an‘astral transmitting station’calling itself ‘Central’. AsInstrumentalTranscommunication hasdeveloped, it has becomeevident that various ITCresearch groups worldwideare being linked as part ofa spirit world plan. The first sign of this cameon April 29, 1992, when aparanormal image ofFriedrich Juergenson wasreceived on a TV set inRivenich. At the same time,in Luxembourg, thereappeared on the CETLcomputer a picture ofSwejen Salter standing nextto the equipment, whichhad seemingly transmittedthe Juergenson picture to

Germany The image ofwhich can be seen quiteclearly on her owncomputer screen. Aconstant criticism of thispicture and others is thatthe scenes portrayed aretoo ‘earth-like’. But MarkMacy comments: ‘Myresearch has convinced methat people and places inthe astral planes are realand they do look very likepeople and places here onearth. Fourteen millionpeople die each day. Theycarry along with them intothe spirit world theirmemories andexpectations. Since thechief rule or law in thespirit world is ‘thoughtscreate reality’, the peoplearriving from earth actuallycreate these spirit worldsand communities with theirmemories andexpectations. They manifestastral bodies that look likethe familiar physical bodiesthat they recently leftbehind. They manifestclothes in the spirit world, not because they needclothes in the spirit worldbut because they hadgrown so accustomed towearing them on earth’.Other evidence that thespirit world is trying to linkup ITC groups worldwide, came at the beginning of1993. On January 21, MarkMacy received a telephonecall from ConstantineRaudive at his home inBoulder, Colorado. Thecaller announced in a deep, but artificial soundingvoice: ‘Good morning Mark. This is Konstantin Raudivespeaking. I am calling toannounce the creation of anew contact bridge... This isthe first contact we areable to make across thisnew bridge’. Six days later, three other leading ITCpioneers in North Americawere similarly contacted.

York and as Governor of theTerritory of Wisconsin. Heinitially consideredmediumship a “delusion,”but was prompted toinvestigate by the testimonyof Judge John W. Edmonds. He soon begancommunicating with thespirit of his old friend, JohnC. Calhoun, former vice-president of the UnitedStates. On one occasion,Calhoun asked him to bring aguitar.I have received numerouscommunications from(Calhoun) from the time ofmy commencing thisinvestigation. They havebeen received throughrapping, writing, andspeaking mediums, and areof the most extraordinarycharacter…I have heard theguitar played by the mostskillful and scientific hands, but I never could haveconceived of that instrumentbeing able to producesounds of such marvellousand fascinating beauty, power, and even grandeur asthis invisible performer thatnight executed.

Professor Augustus DeMorgan (1806-1871)

Considered one of the mostbrilliant mathematicians ofthe 19th Century, De Morganbecame chairman of themathematics department atUniversity College in Londonat age 21. He introduced “De Morgan’s Laws” and wasa reformer in mathematicallogic. He began sitting withmediums in 1853.I have seen in my housefrequently, various personspresenting themselves (asmediums). The answers aregiven mostly by the table,on which a hand or two isgently placed, tilting up atthe letters…I have no theoryabout it, but in a year or twosomething may turn up. Iam, however, satisfied of thereality of the phenomenon.A great many other personsare as cognizant of thesephenomena in their ownhouses as myself. Makewhat you can of it if you area philosopher.

Dr. Robert Hare(1751-1858)

An emeritus professor ofchemistry at the Universityof Pennsylvania and world-renowned inventor, Haredenounced the “madness”being called “Spiritualism”and set out in 1853 to provethat the raps, taps, and tabletilting purportedly bringingmessages from the deadwere either hallucinations orunconscious muscular actionson the part of those present.I sincerely believe that Ihave communicated with thespirits of my parents, sister, brother, and dearest friends, and likewise with the spiritsof the illustrious Washingtonand other worthies of the

spirit world; that I am bythem commissioned, undertheir auspices, to teach truthand to expose error.

Professor James J. Mapes (1806-1866) A professor of chemistry andnatural philosophy at theNational Academy of Designin New York and later at theAmerican Institute, Mapes isbest remembered for hisinventions in sugar refiningand artificial fertilizers. Heset out around 1854 torescue his friends who were“running to mental seed andimbecility” over themediumship epidemic. After investigating manymediums, Mapes changedhis views. Moreover, both hiswife and daughter becamemediums. The manifestations which arepertinent to the endsrequired are so conclusive intheir character as to establishin my mind certain cardinalpoints. These are: First, thereis a future state of existence, which is but a continuationof our present state ofbeing…Second, that thegreat aim of nature, asshown through a greatvariety of spiritual existencesis progression, extendingbeyond the limits of thismundane sphere… Third, that spirits can and docommunicate with mortals, and in all cases evince adesire to elevate andadvance those theycommune with.

Allan Kardec, Esq.(1804-1869)

Educated at the Institute ofPestalozzi at Yverdum,Kardec, whose given name

was Hippolyte Léon DénizarthRivail, was an educator, lecturing on chemistry, physics, comparativeanatomy, and astronomy.Under his given name, heauthored a number of booksaimed at improvingeducation in the publicschools of France. He beganstudying mediums in 1854.Experience gradually madeknown many other varietiesof the mediumistic faculty, and it was found thatcommunication could bereceived through speech, hearing, sight, touch, etc.,and even through directwriting of the spiritsthemselves – that is to saywithout the help of themedium’s hand or of thepencil.

Dr. Alfred RusselWallace (1823-1913)

Co-originator with CharlesDarwin of the naturalselection theory of evolution,Wallace, a naturalist whoprovided Darwin with hisparallel theory, including the“survival of the fittest,”before Darwin went publicwith their two theories, wasa hard-core materialist untilhe began investigatingmediums in 1865. He soonbecame one of Spiritualism’sgreatest missionaries. My position is that thephenomena of Spiritualismin their entirety do notrequire further confirmation. They are proved quite aswell as facts are proved inother sciences.

I t wasn’t long after thebirth of modernSpiritualism in 1848 that

scientists and scholars beganinvestigating thephenomena. Many of themstarted out with the intent ofshowing that all mediumswere charlatans, but one byone they came to believe inthe reality of mediumshipand related psychicphenomena. A few of themsat on the fence when itcame to professing a belief inthe spirit world, but otherswere more courageous.Today, researchers such as Dr. Gary Schwartz of theUniversity of Arizona and Dr.David Fontana, a psychologyprofessor in England, arecontinuing to verify theexistence of genuinemediums, and, concomitantly, of a spiritworld, but considering theconclusions of the famousresearchers of yesteryear, weshould be able to invoke thelegal doctrine of Res Judicata– it has already beendecided. Consider thefollowing testimony.

Judge John W.Edmonds (1816-1874) After serving in both housesof the New York legislature, including president of theSenate, Edmonds waselevated to the New YorkState Supreme Court and

became its Chief Justice. He began his investigation ofmediums in 1851, assumingthat he would expose themas frauds. But all this, and much, verymuch more of a cognatenature went to show me thatthere was a high order ofintelligence involved in thisnew phenomenon – anintelligence outside of, andbeyond, mere mortal agency;for there was no otherhypothesis which I coulddevise or hear of that couldat all explain that, whosereality is established by thetestimony of tens ofthousands, and can easily beascertained by any one whotake the trouble to inquire…

Governor NathanielP. Tallmadge (1795-1864)Educated as a lawyer,Tallmadge served as a UnitedStates Senator from New

We at Zerdin would ask any person or persons of a sceptical nature towardsphysical mediumship and our mediums to look at the eyewitness testimonial andyears of investigation by men and women with perhaps far more brain powerthan most of us could imagine. The list of distinguished researchers compiled byMichael E. Tymn of eminent people who have taken years to investigate physicalphenomena and physical mediumship in many cases from ten to forty years ofinvestigation and have come to the conclusion there is irrefutable evidence thatlife continues after physical death. It is not a consideration something that isundecided these men of brilliance state it is a fact . On behalf of Zerdin Phenomenal we thank Michael E.Tymn The Academy ofSpirituality and Paranormal Studies for the dedication in compiling thisinformation for the benefit of all who will listen.

Sir Arthur ConanDoyle (1859-1930)

A physician turned writer,Doyle was knighted for hisservice as a historian duringthe Boer War, but he is bestremembered as the creatorof Sherlock Holmes stories.Highly sceptical, he beganinvestigating psychicphenomena in 1886.Healthy scepticism is thebasis of all accurateobservation, but there comesa time when incredulitymeans either culpableignorance or else imbecility, and this time has been longpast in the matter of spiritintercourse.

Dr. RichardHodgson (1855-1905)

After earning his M.A. andLL.D at the University ofMelbourne, Hodgson movedto England and entered theUniversity of Cambridge as ascholar studying moralsciences. Upon graduation,he taught poetry and

philosophy at UniversityExtension, then thephilosophy of HerbertSpenser at Cambridge beforebecoming a full-timepsychical researcher in 1887.He had hundreds of sittingswith Leonora Piper over 18years.I had but one object, todiscover fraud and trickery.Frankly, I went to Mrs. Piperwith Professor James ofHarvard University abouttwelve years ago with theobject of unmasking her… I entered the houseprofoundly materialistic, notbelieving in the continuanceof life after death; today Isay I believe. The truth hasbeen given to me in such away as to remove from methe possibility of a doubt.

Dr. James H. Hyslop (1854-1920)

After receiving his Ph.D. fromJohns Hopkins University in1887 and his LL.D. fromUniversity of Wooster, Hysloptaught philosophy at LakeForest University, SmithCollege, and BucknellUniversity before joining thefaculty of Columbia in 1895.He authored three textbooks,Elements of Logic (1892),Elements of Ethics (1895),and Problems of Philosophy(1905) before becoming afull-time psychicalresearcher.Personally, I regard the factof survival after death asscientifically proved. I agreethat this opinion is notupheld in scientific quarters. But this is neither our faultnor the fault of the facts.

Evolution was not believeduntil long after it wasproved. The fault lay withthose who were too ignorantor too stubborn to accept thefacts. History shows thatevery intelligent man whohas gone into thisinvestigation, if he gave itadequate examination at all,has come out believing inspirits; this circumstanceplaces the burden or proofon the shoulders of thesceptic.

Dr. William James(1842-1910)

Considered one of America’sforemost psychologists,Professor James wrotewidely in psychology, philosophy, and religionwhile teaching at Harvardfor 35 years. His Principles ofPsychology, first published in1890, became the seminalwork in the field. HisVarieties of ReligiousExperience is also a classic. His comments below refer tosittings with the medium,Leonora Piper, whom he iscredited with “discovering”in 1885.One who takes part in agood sitting has usually a farlivelier sense, both of thereality and of theimportance of thecommunication, than onewho merely reads therecords… I am able, whilestill holding to all the lowerprinciples of interpretation,to imagine the process asmore complex, and to sharethe feelings with whichHodgson came at last to

regard it after his manyyears of familiarity, thefeeling which ProfessorHyslop shares, and whichmost of those who havegood sittings are promptlyinspired with.

Professor CamilleFlammarion (1842-1925)

A world renownedastronomer, Flammarionfounded the FrenchAstronomical Society andwas known for his study ofMars. He was a pioneer inthe use of balloon to studythe stars. He investigatedpsychic phenomena, including mediumship, formore than 50 years.I do not hesitate to affirm myconviction, based on personalexamination of the subject, that any man who declaresthe phenomena to beimpossible is one who speakswithout knowing what he istalking about; and, also thatany man accustomed toscientific observation –provided that his mind is notbiased by preconceivedopinions – may acquire aradical and absolute certaintyof the reality of the factsalluded to.

Dr. Charles Richet(1850-1909)

Sir William Crookes(1832-1919)

A physicist and chemist, hediscovered the elementthallium and was a pioneerin radioactivity. He inventedthe radiometer, thespinthariscope, and a high-vacuum tube thatcontributed to the discoveryof the x-ray. He was knightedin 1897 and served aspresident of the BritishAssociation for theAdvancement of Science. He set out in 1870 to drive“the worthless residuum ofspiritualism” into the“unknown limbo of magicand necromancy.” However, after thorough investigationsof Daniel D. Home andFlorence Cook, he changedhis views. (The phenomena) point tothe existence of anotherorder of human lifecontinuous with this, anddemonstrate the possibilityin certain circumstances ofcommunication between thisworld and the next.

The Rev. WilliamStainton Moses(1839-1892) While remembered primarilyas a gifted medium, Moses, who received his master’s

degree at Oxford beforebecoming an Anglicanminister and English Masterat University College inLondon, was the first vice-president of the Society forPsychical Research. He wassearching for answers abouthis own mediumistic powersas well as those of others. Before his own powersmanifested in 1872, heconsidered all mediumshipeither fraudulent or demonic.Bit by bit, here a little andthere a little, the evidencecame, as my mind openedto receive it. Some sixmonths were spent inpersistent daily efforts tobring home to me proof ofthe perpetuated existence ofhuman spirits and theirpower to communicate.

Sir William Barrett(1844-1925)

Professor of physics at theRoyal College of Science inDublin for 37 years, hedeveloped a silicon-iron alloy important to thedevelopment of thetelephone and inconstruction of transformers. His research on entopticvision contributed to theinvention of the entoptiscopeand a new optometer. Hewas knighted in 1912 for hiscontributions to science.I am personally convincedthat the evidence we havepublished decidedlydemonstrates (1) the existence of a

spiritual world, (2) survival after death, and(3) of occasional

communication fromthose who have passedover.

Frederic W. H.Myers, Esq. (1843-1901) After graduating fromCambridge in 1864, hebecame a lecturer in classicalliterature there while alsoserving as inspector ofschools at Cambridge.Although not educated as apsychologist, he developed, independent of Freud, atheory of the subliminal self.University of Genevapsychology professorTheordor Flournoy opinedthat Myers name should bejoined to those of Copernicusand Darwin, completing “thetriad of geniuses” who mostprofoundly revolutionizedscientific thought. He wasone of the founders of theSociety for PsychicalResearch.I will here briefly state whatfacts they are which ourrecorded apparitions, intimations, messages of thedeparting and the departed, have, to my mind actuallyproved: a) In the first place, they prove survival pure andsimple; the persistence ofthe spirit’s life as a structurallaw of the universe; the

inalienable heritage of eachseveral soul; b) …they provethat between the spiritualand the material worlds anavenue of communicationdoes in fact exist; that whichwe call the dispatch and thereceipt of telepathicmessages, or the utteranceand the answer of prayerand supplication; c)…theyprove that the survivingspirit retains, at least insome measure, thememories and the loves ofearth…”

Sir Oliver Lodge(1851-1940)

Professor of physics atUniversity College inLiverpool, England and laterprincipal at the University ofBirmingham, Lodge achievedworld fame for hispioneering work inelectricity, including the radioand spark plug. Dr. Lodgewas knighted in 1902 for hiscontributions to science. He became interested inpsychical research in 1884and sat extensively withLeonora Piper and GladysOsborne Leonard.I tell you with all mystrength of the convictionwhich I can muster that wedo persist, that people stillcontinue to take an interestin what is going on, thatthey know far more aboutthings on this earth than wedo, and are able from timeto time to communicate withus…I do not say it is easy, but it is possible, and I haveconversed with my friendsjust as I can converse withanyone in this audience now.

A Pulitizer Prize-winningauthor of 52 books, Garlandwas intimately involved withmajor literary, social, andartistic movements inAmerican culture. He wasone of the original membersof the American PsychicalSociety, formed in Boston in1891. In his 1936 book, FortyYears of Psychic Research,Garland states that he wasan agnostic and student ofDarwin and Herbert Spenserwhen he began hisinvestigation of mediums.I concede the possibility oftheir (spirits’) persistence, especially when their voicescarry, movingly, characteristictones and their messagesare startlingly intimate. Atsuch times, they seem soulsof the dead veritablyreimbodied. They jest withme about their occupations. They laugh at my doubts, quite in character. They touchme with their hands.

MauriceMaeterlinck, Esq.(1862-1949)

Winner of the 1911 NobelPrize in literature,Maeterlinck, a Belgian, wasprimarily a poet, author, andplaywright but he was also apsychical researcher.Of all the explanationsconceivable, that one whichattributes everything toimposture and trickery isunquestionably the mostextraordinary and the leastprobable.

Professor William R.Newbold (1865-1926) Professor of philosophy atthe University ofPennsylvania when he was

appointed to the advisorycouncil of the AmericanSociety for PsychicalResearch, Newbold hadnumerous sittings withLeonora Piper.Until within very recentyears, the scientific worldhas tacitly rejected a largenumber of importantphilosophical conceptions onthe ground that there isabsolutely no evidence intheir favour whatever.Among those popularconceptions are those of theessential independence ofthe mind and the body, ofthe existence of a supersensible world, and of thepossibility of occasionalcommunication betweenthat world and this. We havehere (in Mrs. Piper), as itseems to me, evidence thatis worthy of consideration forall these points.

Dr. Carl A. Wickland (1861-1945)

A member of the ChicagoMedical Society, theAmerican Association for theAdvancement of Science, anddirector of the NationalPsychological Institute of LosAngeles, Wickland specializedin cases of schizophrenia, paranoia, depression, addiction, manic-depression,criminal behaviour andphobias of all kinds. His wife,Anna Wickland, was a trancemedium. Spirit obsession is a fact – aperversion of a natural law –and is amply demonstrable. This has been provenhundreds of times by

causing the supposedinsanity or aberration to betemporarily transferred fromthe victim to a psychicsensitive who is trained forthe purpose, and by thismethod ascertain the causeof the psychosis to be anignorant or mischievousspirit, whose identity mayfrequently be verified.

Edward C. Randall,Esq. (1860-1935) A prominent Buffalo, NewYork trial lawyer who servedon the board of directors of anumber of largecorporations, Randall beganstudying the direct-voicemediumship of Emily S.French in 1890. He had morethan 700 sittings with Frenchover 22 years.Hundreds, yea thousands (ofspirits), have come andtalked with me, and to manywhom I have invited toparticipate in the work –thousands of different voiceswith different tones, different thoughts, differentpersonalities, no two alike;and at times in differentlanguages.

Dr. Isaac K. Funk(1839-1912)

After serving 11 years as aLutheran minister, Funkturned to editorial work andco-founded the publishingfirm of Funk and Wagnalls. He was the editor-in-chief ofthe Standard Dictionary ofthe English Language. Funkbegan investigating psychicphenomena after hearingabout the mediumship ofEmily French from Edward C.Randall.About 14 years ago Ibecame acquainted with(Emily French). I was sureher phenomena were theresult of fraud and Idetermined to expose it.

After many sittings andexacting experiments, Ibecame convinced that theywere genuine, and finally atthe suggestion of the spiritintelligences, I had fitted upa séance room in my ownhouse in which my wife, themedium, and myself heldséances, and we have donethis now for more than adozen years. I have testedMrs. French in every way Ican think of, and amthoroughly convinced thatthe phenomena are whatthey claim to be.

The Rev. CharlesDrayton Thomas(1868-1953) A graduate of RichmondTheological College, Thomaswas a Methodist ministerwho served on the Council ofthe Society for PsychicalResearch in London for 19years. Beginning in 1917, hehad more than 500 sittingswith Gladys OsborneLeonard, probably England’smost famous medium. TheBook Tests and NewspaperTests are Thomas’ primarycontribution to psychicalresearch. Along with theCross-Correspondences, theyare considered the bestevidence of the reality ofspirit communication. Perhaps it will be askedwhat benefit may beexpected from a generalacceptance of this evidencefor survival. I think it will dofor others what it has donefor me. It has supplementedand reinforced my faith, bothin times of bereavement andin the prospect of old ageand death. Also, it hasfurther emphasized thevalue of personal religion.

Dr. WilliamMcDougall (1871-1938)

15EXCLUSIVE>>

Professor of physiology atthe University of ParisMedical School, Richet wasconsidered a world authorityon nutrition in health and indisease. He won the NobelPrize in 1913 for his work onallergic reactions. Whileconvinced of the reality ofmediumship, he remainedpublicly agnostic towardsurvival. According to SirOliver Lodge, his good friend,Richet privately acceptedsurvival before his death. It seems to me the facts areundeniable. I am convincedthat I have been present atrealities. Certainly I cannotsay in what materializationconsists. I am ready tomaintain that there issomething profoundlymysterious in it which willchange from top to bottomour ideas on nature and onlife.

Dr. CesareLombroso (1835-1909)

Professor of psychology atthe University of Turin andInspector of Asylums for theInsane in Italy, Lombrosowas a pioneeringcriminologist. He becameknown worldwide for hisbook, The Criminal Man. Hebegan investigating psychicphenomena in 1891.I am ashamed and grievedat having opposed with somuch tenacity the possibilityof psychic facts – the factsexist and I boast of being aslave to facts. There can beno doubt that genuine

psychical phenomena areproduced by intelligencestotally independent of thepsychic and the partiespresent at the sittings.

Dr. Enrico Morselli(1852-1929)

An Italian neurologist, hewas Director of the Clinic ofNervous and Mental Diseaseat the University of Genoa. If for many years academicscience has depreciated thewhole category of facts…somuch the worse for science. And worse still for thescientists who haveremained deaf and blindbefore affirmations, not ofcredulous sectarians, but ofserious and worthyobservers, such as Crookes,Lodge, and Richet. I, myself,as far as my modest powerwent, contributed to thisobstinate scepticism until theday when I was enabled tobreak the chains in which myabsolutist preconceptions hadbound my judgement. I wasa bitter sceptic with regard tothe objective reality of thephenomena. Today, furnishedwith an experience, afterlong and mature reflectionson what I have seen andtouched with my hand, Ihave changed my belief.

Dr. Gustave Geley(1868-1924)

Professor of medicine at theUniversity of Lyons, he gaveup his practice as a teacherand physician in 1919 tobecome director of theInstitute MetaphyschiqueInternational in Paris toinvestigate mediumship.(The facts revealednecessitate) the completeoverthrow of materialisticphysiology, (and that) thematerialistic conception ofthe universe is false andcannot be reconciled withour present biologicalknowledge.

Dr. JulianOchorowicz (1850-1917)

Professor of psychology andphilosophy at the Universityof Warsaw, he helpedestablish the PolishPsychological Institute inWarsaw and served as adirector for the InternationalInstitute of Psychology inParis.I found I had done a greatwrong to men who hadproclaimed new truths at therisk of their positions. When Iremember that I branded asa fool that fearlessinvestigator, Crookes, theinventor of the radiometer, because he had the courageto assert the reality ofpsychic phenomena and tosubject them to scientifictests, and when I alsorecollect that I used to readhis articles thereon in thesame stupid style, regardinghim as crazy, I am ashamed,

both of myself and others, and I cry from the verybottom of my heart. ‘Father,I have sinned against theLight.’”

Baron (Dr.) Albert VonSchrenck-Notzing (1862-1929)

A forensic psychiatrist andmember of the Germanaristocracy, he becameinterested in psychicalresearch in 1889. Hecollaborated with Richet,Lombroso, Lodge, and othersin many investigations forover 30 years. While he wasreluctant, apparently out ofscientific conservatism, tolink valid mediumship withsurvival, he was nonethelessconvinced of the reality ofmediumship. Finally, in the case of manyphenomena, the nature andevanescence of theirappearance, their flowing, changing and fantasticshapes and their mode ofdevelopment until theyreached their final form, argues against any possibilityof a fraudulent production ofthem – even if one wouldassume that one of thosepresent would have tried todeceive his fellow observers.

was one of the firstresearchers of the near-death experience. Many people are beginningto be aware that thephysical body is only thehouse or the temple, or aswe call it the cocoon, whichwe inhabit for a certainnumber of months or yearsuntil we make the transitioncalled death. Then, at thetime of death, we shed thiscocoon and are once againas free as a butterfly to usethe symbolic language thatwe use when talking todying children and theirsiblings.

Barbara R.Rommer, M.D.(1944-2004) A founding member of theHoly Cross Medical Group inFort Lauderdale, FL, Rommerpracticed medicine from1974 until her death in2004. She was also aresearcher of near-deathexperiences, authoring twobooks on the subject, including Blessings inDisguise, published in 2000.I believe that the only partof us that dies is ourphysical body, once referredto as our ‘husk’ by aCatholic priest who relatedhis own near-deathexperience to me. The bodyis physical matter but is notour true essence. Our trueessence, our soul, our spirit, our life force, and our verybeing, that part of us whichhas a personality, mostprobably does not die. Imust admit that I havereceived what I consider tobe confirmation of this frommy husband, Salvatore(Sonny) Pepitone, whoentered his spirit form onJune 25, 1997.

Gary Schwartz,Ph.D. (1944-)After receiving his doctoratefrom Harvard University, Dr.Schwartz served as aprofessor of psychology andpsychiatry at Yale University. He then became director ofthe University of Arizona’sHuman Energy SystemsLaboratory, where heconducted extensive

research with mediums. His book, The AfterlifeExperiments, published in2002 detailed theseexperiments.I can no longer ignore thedata (on research into thesurvival of consciousness)and dismiss the words(coming through mediums). They are as real as the sun,the trees, and our televisionsets, which seem to pullpictures out of the air.

As a lifelongmulti-disciplinarian, he hasdone extensive research, writing, teaching, andpresentations in psychology, parapsychology, consciousness studies, newparadigm thought and newscience, ufology, metaphysics and thetranspersonal domain.I personally choose tobelieve that we domeaningfully survive deathand can communicate backthrough mediums andchannels, although, as Isaid, perhaps only apercentage of what isthought to be genuinemediumship or channelingactually is, and right nowwe just do not have anykind of definitive litmus testto ascertain authenticity.

David Fontana,Ph.D. (current)

A professor of transpersonalpsychology in Great Britain,Dr. Fontana is a pastpresident of the Society forPsychical Research and afellow of the BritishPsychological Society. Hehas done extensive survivalresearch and is the authorof many books, including IsThere an Afterlife? publishedin 2002.Ultimately our acceptance ofthe reality of survival maynot come solely from theevidence but from personalexperience and from someinner intuitive certaintyabout our real nature. Weare who we are, and atsome deep level withinourselves we may be theanswer to our ownquestions. If your answer isthat you are more than abiological accident whoseultimately meaningless lifeis bounded by the cradleand the grave, then I haveto say I agree with you.

Hebecame interested inpsychic phenomena in 1918and conducted extensivestudies on Canadianmediums.…we hold the survivaltheory to be valid inaccounting for every factknown in regard to thetrance personalities. Itaccounts for their statedopinions that they wereindeed deceased(discarnate) individuals. Itadmits of the possibility thatthey, as discarnate persons, shared some manner ofinter-communication, whichenabled them to plan, toco-operate, and to committhemselves to organizedactivities in the séanceroom, activities whichextended over a period ofmany years.

Dr. Robert Crookall (1890-1969) – After taking hisPh.D., Crookall lectured atAberdeen University beforejoining the staff of theGeological Survey of GreatBritain, specializing in coal-forming plants. He resignedfrom his geological work in1952 to devote the rest ofhis life to psychical research. The whole of the availableevidence is explicable onthe hypothesis of thesurvival of the human soulin a Soul Body. There is nolonger a ‘deadlock’ or‘stalemate’ on the questionof survival. On the contrary, survival is as wellestablished as the theory ofevolution.

Dr. C. J. Ducasse(1881-1969) The French-born Americanphilosopher came to theUnited Stated as a teenagerand eventually becamechairman of the Departmentof Philosophy at BrownUniversity. He had manysittings with mediums andlectured extensively onpsychical research. Some of the facts we haveconsidered suggest that thebelief in life after death, which so many personshave found no particulardifficulty in accepting as anarticle in religious faith, maywell be capable of empiricalproof. That the occurrence ofparanormal phenomenadoes appear to have suchimplications, is, I submit, sufficient reason to givethem far more attention andstudy than they havecommonly received in thepast.

Dr. Raynor C.Johnson (1901-1987) A physicist, Johnson waseducated at Oxford andreceived his doctorate fromthe University of London. Helectured in physics at King’s

College, University ofLondon, before becomingmaster of Queen’s College atthe University of Melbournein Australia. For myself, I can only saythat my intuition, such as itis, supports (Frederic)Myers, and my attempt toevaluate the data ofpsychical research and forma critical judgement leadsme to conclude that ifsurvival of death is notrigorously proven, it isnevertheless established asof that high order orprobability which, forpractical purposes, can betaken as the same thing.

Dr. GardnerMurphy (1895-1979) While at Harvard, Murphyaccepted the HodgsonMemorial Fund researchgrant. He served aspresident of the AmericanSociety for PsychicalResearch for 20 years. Hetaught psychology atColumbia University andserved as chairman of thepsychology department atCity College of New York.It is the autonomy, thepurposiveness, the cogency, above all the individuality,of the sources of themessages, that cannot beby-passed. Struggle though Imay as a psychologist, forforty-five years, to try tofind a ‘naturalistic’ and‘normal’ way of handlingthis material, I cannot dothis even when using all theinformation we have abouthuman chicanery and all wehave about the far-flungtelepathic and clairvoyantabilities of some giftedsensitives. The case lookslike communication with thedeceased.

Dr. HerewardCarrington (1880-1958) After moving to the U.S.

from Great Britain in 1899,Carrington served asassistant to Dr. James H.Hyslop at the Society forPsychical Research. His firstof many books on psychicalphenomena was publishedin 1907 and explained thefraudulent practices ofphysical mediums. However,Carrington came away fromhis investigation of EusapiaPalladino convinced of thereality of some of thephenomena. In 1921, hefounded the AmericanPsychical Institute andLaboratory.I myself have observedmaterializations underperfect conditions of control, and have had the temporaryhand melt within my own,as I held it firmly grasped. This hand was a perfectlyformed physiologicalstructure, warm, lifelike, andhaving all the attributes ofthe human hand – yet boththe medium’s hands weresecurely held by twocontrollers, and visible inthe red light. Let me repeat, this hand was not pulledaway, but somehow meltedin my grasp as I held it.

Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, M.D. (1926-2004)

A Swiss-born medical doctor, psychiatrist, andthanatologist, Dr. Kübler-Ross was an internationallyrenowned authority in thearea of death and dying. She authored a number ofbooks on the subject, and

Book Review:Life Around My Father, HarryEdwards. By Felicity Joan Medland. Paperback. 85 Pages. £7.50. Burrows Lea Country House Ltd.By Graham Jennings

“Lloyd George knew myfather,” runs the old song,“Father knew Lloyd George.”In the author’s case, theyreally did. For the man whowas to become so famous asa healer, was once a Liberalcandidate for Parliament withthe great man’s support.

His eldest daughter, FelicityJoan Medland, is also the lastsurviving member of physicalmedium Jack Webber’s circle. She describes here the sheerpower of the mediumship ofher father’s best friend andthe wonderful evidencegiven.

Though unsuccessful as acandidate, Harry Edwards’public speaking experience, often at mass gatherings, was to prove invaluable. Itwas part of what Felicitydescribes as his destiny, hisblueprint for life. When onestage was completed anotherbegan. He was born in 1893,the first of nine children. Hefollowed his father into theprinting trade, but enlisted onthe outbreak of war in 1914.

Commissioned in the field, herose to the rank of captain. He ended the war with theMesopatamia ExpeditionaryForce in Baghdad, laying arailway and building bridges. Those were the days when,in the farthest reaches ofEmpire, a British officer and afew men still commandedthe respect of civilians andmilitias alike. CaptainEdwards was no exception.

“Forthcoming events,” asFelicity says, “cast theirshadows before them.” Heacquired a reputation among

them as “Hakim”, meaning“the healer”. They broughthim their sick to heal. Lackingmedical knowledge, withonly basic equipment, he didwhat he could. To hissurprise, the patients wereindeed healed. When he leftin 1921, the people cried:“You are our father and ourmother. Do not leave us!”

He married Phyllis White in1922 in Balham, South WestLondon, England and settledthere. Felicity was born ayear later, followed by Tony,Megan – named after LloydGeorge’s daughter – andBarbara. He returned toprinting and ran his ownbusiness. Then came theGreat Depression, an erapassing beyond livingmemory, but wonderfullyevoked here. There arephotographs of him at work.Whilst everything about hisappearance is ordinary, thereis always a purposeful look inthe eye. It is as though hewas inwardly preparinghimself for some great work, even if consciously he knewnot what.

Eventually, he was introducedto Spiritualism and heard ofhealing for the first time.Soon he was acquiring areputation as a healer.Maurice Barbanell, the editorof “Psychic News” was afrequent visitor. Then in thelate Thirties medium John(Jack) Boaden Webber andhis family from Wales movedin next door. He had grownup in a Welsh mining village, been a collier at fourteen andcould scarcely read or write.

Felicity describes a typicalséance in detail. Jack, small, slight and sandy hairedwould enter the room whenthe sitters, about twenty, were seated. He was securelytied with rope to a sturdyWindsor chair. His jacket wasstitched from top to bottom,so it could not be removed byphysical means. Photographshere show it removedaltogether, an impossible featexcept by dematerialisation.Afterwards, it would be onJack again with the stitchingstill in place.

The sittings were in red light.Jack’s guide Black Cloud wasin complete control. Twoluminous trumpets were usedfor the direct voice. AlthoughJack was practically illiterate,Spirit communicated in manylanguages, even fluent Latin! Then there was Reuben, another of Jack’s guides, whosang like Paul Robeson. Hisvoice was recorded by Decca, but the records wereeventually lost.

There were apports also, including an Egyptian amulet, dated by the British Museumas c.1,500 BC; and a brassPersian stork, dematerialisedin Felicity’s room andapported to the séance nextdoor.

Tragically, Jack passed withspinal meningitis in 1940.Even his friend’s healing couldnot save him. Thus the greathealer learned that thewonderful healing power wasindeed his to channel, butnot command.

The country was now at warand the family did their bit.

Turned down for the armybecause of age, Harry joinedthe Home Guard. Motherjoined the ARP and Felicitythe ATS.

Eventually, bombed out oftheir Balham home, theymoved to Stoneleigh nearEpsom. Harry was by now abusy, well-known healer. Anever-increasing postbagarrived with healing requests. He also held healingdemonstrations and lecturesas he had throughout the war.

Bigger premises wereneeded and he found themat Burrows Lea near Shere inSurrey. With his brother-in-law he raised the £8,000needed for its purchase. TheVictorian mansion andcottages, set in thirteen acresof woodland, became theHarry Edwards HealingSanctuary. He passed there in1976, his life’s workcompleted. It continues tothis day with a dedicatedteam of healers, respondingdaily to healing requestsworldwide.

A personal, very moving andcan’t-put-down book!

Book Review:Your Eternal Self. By R. Craig Hogan, Ph.D., et aliaPaperback. 289 Pages. $16.95. Greater Reality Publications.By Graham Jennings

The mind is not confinedto the body and we arean eternal being havinga physical experience. It is not just Spiritualistswho say this. A growingnumber of philosophers, physicians, researchers, psychologists, theologians andscientists have reachedthe same conclusion.

Many though still think of themind as three to five pounds offat and protein compressedinside the skull. They weretaught so at school. “But thefact is,” says R. Craig Hogan,“neuroscience can’t explainhow people have a consciousexperience, where the mind is,what memories are, or wherememories are stored. That’spretty remarkable consideringthat the brain has beencarefully mapped using CTs,MRIs, PETs and EEGs to findwhich part of the brain is activewhen a person is performingactivities. In spite of all themapping that’s been done, they can’t locate the mind andthey can’t find memories.”

It is thought the brain cellssomehow hold memory; butthey die at the rate of 50,000to 100,000 a day. At this rate, I should have to type veryquickly before those holdingthe memories of this bookwere gone forever! Also, everysecond 500,000 body cells dieand are replaced. I really mustget a move on and finish whilethere is still something left Ican call me!

No, memories are not in thebrain cells and the brain is notthe mind. The author gives

many instances where themind can function apart fromit, such as remote viewing. Hecan do this and does so inexperiments. Of particularinterest to him are Near Deathand Out of Body Experiences. Some patients have recalledsurgical operations in detailwhile the brain was inactive.Others have become detachedfrom the body and viewed theoperation from above. Thereare even instances of blindpeople being able to seeperfectly during OBEs.

Many academics are listedtogether with their evidentialexperiments – more thanenough to fill this review. Alldemonstrate that the mind isnot limited to the body. Nordose it exist in isolation. It islinked to other minds, and notjust to a twin or familymember. All of us belong to asoul group and share acollective memory. We add to itwhen we return with theknowledge and experiencesgained here.

The author then discusses thephenomenon of mediumshipand a further meeting ofminds: those on the earthplane with those on a higherone. The author lists the mosttried and tested mediums, going back to the nineteenthcentury. They have all clearlydemonstrated what science isat last coming to realize: thatwe are not the brain, but aneternal conscious being makingtemporary use of one. Whenwe depart we discard it like acoat. He compares it to re-entering the home of lovedones. You take off your coatand re-join them. It is you theywant, not your old coat!

Then there is physicalmediumship, the mostevidential of all. He presentseyewitness accounts of HelenDuncan séances. He alsoquotes from Victor Zammit’s “A Lawyer Presents the Casefor the Afterlife”.

Zammit describes an incrediblesitting in Sao Vicente indaylight with mediumMirabelli. It was witnessed byten men all having the degreeof Doctor of Science. A little girlmaterialised and wasimmediately claimed by adoctor present as his daughter. She had passed a few monthsearlier and was wearing thedress she was buried in.Another took her in his arms, felt her pulse and askedseveral questions which sheanswered with understanding. She then floated round theroom and disappeared, havingbeen materialised for thirty-sixminutes. Then all saw the formof Bishop Jose de CamargoBarros in the full insignia ofoffice. He had passed recentlypassed in a shipwreck.

Given then that we are eternalbeings, what is the purpose ofour sojourn here? Surely it iswhat the masters of old andmodern spirit guides havealways told us: to learn lessonsfrom our mistakes and progressspiritually. Consider the wordsof the Master, Yeshua benYosef (the Aramaic name ofJesus), not in terms oforthodoxy, but in the light ofthe above.

“I will not leave you asorphans; I will come to you. Before long, the world will notsee me anymore, but you willsee me. Because I live, you

also will live. On that day youwill realize that I am in myFather, and you are in me, andI am in you.”

This is a truly fascinatingaccount that brings scientistsand Spiritualists togetherwhere they belong. Uniquely, the author has wavedcopyright on this vast labour oflove. We are free to use any ofit if it helps us, or humankind, develop spiritually.

Science Discovers the AfterlifeFor the last 50 years, science has set its sights onunderstanding human consiousness, and what ithas found has been remarkable. Study after studyhas demonstrated that the mind is not producedby the brain and is not confined to the body.

Those findings have validated what the mentaland physical mediums had already demonstratedover the past two centuries: our minds are notlimited to the physical realm and theindividual lives on after the body dies.

Your Eternal Self, by R. Craig Hogan, Ph. D.,contains the most compelling evidence from abroad range of studies in neuroscience, biology, physics, consiousness research, and otherscientific disciplines demonstrating compellinglythat the mind is not located in the brain, people’sminds are linked, and the afterlife is as real as thislife. All of the evidence is presented in readable,non-technical language.“I rank this book as number one supporting the survivalhypothesis in clear and concise language.” – Michael Tymn,vice-president, Academy of Religion and Psychical Research“essential reading for anyone interested in the Afterlife” –Victor Zammit, A Lawyer Presents the Case for the Afterlife“An absolute Gold Mine of empirical validation about thecontinuance of consciousness.” Rob Smith, EVP researcher“opens a door to a completely new understanding of whoand what we are’ – Cynthia Larson, RealityShifters News“a mountain of scientific evidence that the mind and thebrain are two distinct entities” – Dr Al Botkin, Induced After-Death Communication“solid information not available in similar books” –Mindquest Review

FriedrichJuergenson,Nestor of theresearch on tape-recorded voices, died on 15thOctober 1987.During the timeof his burial, friends of him,the couple Claudeand Ellen Thorlinof Eskilstuna,Sweden, switchedon their TV setand received onthe screen thepicture ofJuergenson. Theytook a photo witha polaroidcamera.

Claude Thorlin reports onthis occurrence asfollows: “In the morning ofJuergenson’s funeral inHoeoer, his last place ofresidence, my wife heard anot identifiable inner voicesaying “channel four”. When we had breakfast, she told me about it. I didnot understand it, becausewe have only three radiobroadcasting stations andonly two televisionstations. However, my wifehad an undefinablepresentiment that this hint

could have to do withJuergenson’s funeral. Some time before we hadalready heard thatresearchers in Germanyand in Luxembourg hadsucceeded in takingparanormal photos via TVscreen. I therefore took mypolaroid camera fitted witha black-and-white film andset my television set onchannel four. So we satabout a quarter of an hour, but nothing happened. Wehad almost given up hope;to us it appeared to benonsensical to remainsitting still more time infront of the flickering TVset. Suddenly the screenbecame black and Ithought the teletube weredefective. At that momenta bright point appeared onthe left part of the screen, and I immediately turnedmy camera to this lightpoint. During a time ofabout six to seven secondsthe light diffused over theentire screen and thendecreased. Exactly in thismoment I took the photoand immediatelyafterwards the flickeringand the noise came back. I looked on the clock: itwas exactly 13 hours 22.In the course of thedeveloping of this photo, the face of FriedrichJuergenson appeared. My wife, who meanwhilehad left the room, cameback and, looking over myshoulder, watched me

developing the polaroidphoto. Suddenly sheshouted: “My God, that’sFriedel !”And it was him. He hadmanifested himself on thescreen, exactly the hour hewas buried. Already manyyears prior to his deathJuergenson had theconviction that one daydeceased will be showingvia television. Overmagnetic tape he hadpretty often receivedmessages from his friendsin the Beyond indicating

this. Certainly, he could nomore live the fulfilment onhim of these predictions, but he succeeded after hisdecease in producing themanifestation of himself.”

“As a little girl inFrance I got very ill.I was an importantsource ofinformation (forhigher beingsmonitoring her lifeon Earth). Throughspiritual insight andprayer I learnedfrom theOmnipotence that Iwas better able tounderstand thethings I needed toknow here on thethird (mid-astral)level and could domore for mankindfrom here than onEarth.

(At some spirituallevel) I desired thechange into a multi-dimensional worldand was allowed afast passing over toa world, somememory of whichwas still alive inme. It is the samebeautiful world youhave heard aboutfrom others likeme.”Anne’s letter goes on to talkabout her role as the leaderof the Group for theProtection of All NewbornLife; a group of physiciansand theologians in spirit whoare concerned with peoplewho die on earth as children. She discusses theresponsibilities andretribution of the adults

responsible for tragic,premature deaths ofchildren.

Claus Schreiber began toreceive spirit images on his TVset in 1985, including the facesof scientist Albert Einstein,Austrian actress RomySchneider and various departedfamily members – especially histwo deceased wives anddaughter Karin (with whom hewas particularly close).

H is technique, setup by hiscolleague Martin

Wenzel, involved aiming avideo camera at thetelevision and feeding theoutput of the camera backinto the TV, in order toachieve a feedback loop. The result was a churningmist on the screen out ofwhich the spirit faceswould slowly form over aperiod of many frames.Schreiber’s spectacularresults were the subjectof a TV documentary andbook by popular radio-television commentator

Rainer Holbe in nearbyLuxembourg, in 1985.Claus Schreiber receivedthe advice from hiscontact partner in beyond, via EVP to makeexperiments with video.

Claus Schreiber was aGerman man with verypowerful psychic skillsthat lay dormant until the1970s and 80s. Afterhearing about thephenomenon of spoon-bending, he went to thekitchen, pulled a spoonfrom the drawer and triedit. To his amazement,

after a few gentle strokesthe spoon bent in hishands as though it hadmelted. Before long hehad bent not only avariety of silverware, butalso an old horseshoe.

He began voiceexperimenting with atape recorder andimmediately beganreceiving voices of hismany deceased relatives. He was now hopelesslyexcited about paranormalresearch, especially spiritcommunication, so heopened up a lab in hisbasement for audio and

video experiments.

In the mid-1980s MrSchreiber became the firstperson in history toreceive direct paranormalimages in anexperimental setting. They came through hisold black-and-whitetelevision set. He beganwith some ratherelaborate video-feedbackexperiments whichproduced strange, mistypatterns on the TV screenout of which imageswould form. These wereimages of deceasedfamily members,

Karinappeared as a femalefigure in a dark blouseand a white skirt with herhead tilted. She soonbecame her dad’s primaryresearch colleague, actingas an intermediary in hiscontacts with otherdeparted familymembers.

Claus Schreiber died inJanuary 1988 after asecond heart attack andwithin months began

sending pictures andmessages to formerfriends and colleagues onEarth. These included apicture of himself and apicture of the spirit-worldhome where he isreported to be livingalong with otherdeceased Schreiber familymembers.

On 13th October 1994 anew picture with textarrived in Luxembourg(Harsch-Fischbach) fromClaus Schreiber. quality of the phenomena, with the trumpets havingrestricted movement. In July1940, one of the morespectacular materializationstook place: sitters werejoined by the medium JackWebber who had diedearlier that year. The tensitters signed a declarationabout what they hadwitnessed. After anappearance of one of theguides, the plaque rose andJack Webber was seen, albeit for a few seconds. This was followed by afurther appearance of longerduration; of this, HarryEdwards, one of the sitters, declared, ‘Jack went fromour side of the circle to theopposite side and spoke afew words, with the tonalqualities of his voice beingclearly recognisable’...I haveseen many materialisations, but never before have Iseen one so plainly’. Following this, there werematerializations of two ofArnold’s guides. The seanceincluded other phenomena;for nearly an hour, up tothree trumpets movedabout the room and ‘theyweaved intricate patterns atamazing speed... theyturned, reversed, joinedtogether three in a row’ andat certain times were someeight feet away from themedium. This wasaccompanied by a numberof apports. Due to the war, seances were not heldbetween August and earlyNovember 1940; in fact, due to the time, many ofthe seances wereaccompanied by the noiseof air-raid sirens, guns andbombing. On recommencing, it wasevident that the break hadnot diminished Arnold’sabilities. At a seance in midNovember, any doubtsabout whether thephenomena would returnwere swiftly discarded.Almost immediately afterbeginning, the trumpetswere seen to rise close tothe ceiling and move inharmony with the singing. To the sitters’ delight, while

singing, the voice of LittlePeter was clearly heardthrough one of thetrumpets, joining in withthem. One of the guidesrequested that an end ofthe trumpet be blocked;after this was done, LittlePeter spoke through thetrumpet, indicating that thesource of what makes thiscommunication possible wasactually inside the trumpet.

On 30 November 1940,Colin Evans, B.A., wasinvited to a seance; hisrecord is significant due tohis objectively and theabsence of partiality. Duringthe seance, light wassometimes provided by ared light and the fire. Hisgeneral view was that of,‘complete genuineness inrespect to all thephenomena’. The seancebegan with noises and thetrumpets beginning tomove. One of the guidesspoke, and Evans recordedthat it was wholly unlikethe medium’s own voice, and he believed the accentwould not be possible tofalsify unless a person hadspecialized training. Musicwas played through much ofthe seance and when theneedle on the gramophonerequired changing, the sittermanaged to drop this andwas unable to locate it onthe floor. Ever helpful, LittlePeter announced that hehad found the needle, and abox of these was promptlylevitated around the room –and rattled. Evans alsonoted the presence ofwinds, that he believed mayhave been caused by therapid movement of thetrumpets. He also relatedhow Arnold’s mediumshipnot only provided differentforms of phenomena, butdemonstrated survival. Anumber of the sitters werespoken to through thetrumpets and thecommunicators wererecognized as ‘voices offriends and relatives("dead") well known tothem’. One of these sittershad not attended a seancebefore, and was unknown to

the medium. This wasfollowed by apports: LittlePeter counted aloud, asthese were produced one byone. Materializationssubsequently joined thecircle. Evans then requestedthat the medium be seenwhile a materialization waspresent.

The electric fire was moved, and then switched on bythe spirit agencies and in itsred glow, a baby’s formappeared; the luminousslate then moved across theroom and illuminated themedium, still seated. Thetrumpets, and theectoplasmic rods alsobecame visible. The plug ofthe electric fire was thenpromptly pulled out of itssocket ‘without humanintervention’.

Towards the end of thisseance, the materializationof Jack Webber occurred; inresponse to this, Evansmade the decisive

statement that: ‘I knew JackWebber very well by sight, and was under no possibilityof doubt as to the features Isaw in the materialisationbeing the same as thosewith which I becamefamiliar during Webber’searth life’. This wasfollowed by Little Petermaterializing. Evans refersto a number of othermaterializations by thefriends and relatives ofother sitters, that heunderstood wererecognized.

It is only by the reading ofsuch records of physicalmediumship that the valueof this activity becomesevident. Harry Edwardsnotes that the number ofoutstanding physicalmediums in the world isnegligible; this form ofmediumship is rare, andconsequently, very precious, and is something worthreflecting upon.

The awakening ofthe mediumship ofArnold Clare, bornin 1901, can belinked to John, amonk whom he metin 1917 at MountAthos. Arnold, serving as amember of theNavy, spent manyhours listening tothe wise old man;he rememberedthat on leaving,John simply saidthat the two ofthem would meetagain. Arnoldhardly realized atthe time what thecircumstanceswould be when thishappened.

L ater, during his navalservice, he becameacquainted with a

Russian captain who invitedhim to his own home wherecircles were held with hiswife as the medium. Afterattending a number ofthese, the medium began tospeak ‘with an intonationunmistakably John’s andreproducing his naturalinflexions’. During thisoccasion, the communicatorreminded Arnold of what hehad predicted: ‘I told you,my son, we should meetagain’. He continued tospeak as he had done atMount Athos, and advised

Arnold that he was beingtrained for work. Thedevelopment of ArnoldClare’s mediumship thenoccurred in a series ofdifferent stages. In each ofthese, evidence becamegreater and communicationbecame of higher quality.

After reading an article byConan Doyle, Arnold wasprompted to attemptreceiving communications, and found that he wascapable of automaticwriting. However, it wasonly after he was diagnosedas having tuberculosis, thathe began to pray andbecome aware of John’spresence. Arnold continuedwith this meditation andbecame involved withSpiritualist churches, andjoined a circle associatedwith the Balham Church. Itwas at the circle held on 31December 1938, when theexpected medium was notable to be present, thatArnold decided the seanceshould continue, and hisown mediumship waswitnessed by those present;this included the productionof apports andcommunications from hisguides. From thereon, heprovided a convincingdisplay of both phenomenaand evidence.

To ensure that a reasonableamount of light wasavailable during his seances, the plaque used wassomewhat large, i.e. overtwo square feet; beforeeach sitting, luminous paint

was applied. The light that itsupplied made it possible tosee objects four feet away;through this, sitters wereable to observe thetrumpets, and see thematerializations.

William E. Harrison provideda detailed account of hisexperience of Arnold’smediumship at seancesbeginning in 1939. In thefirst of these, with themedium bound securely to achair, there was themovement of trumpets andother objects, with apportstransported into the roomby means of the trumpets.

Similar phenomena werewitnessed during seances ata later date, and these alsoincluded Peter, one of theguides, being able to speakto the sitters through thetrumpet. Shortly after thistime, Peter announced thatit was intended to developthe medium’s abilities andattempt direct andindependent voicecommunication. As therewas little progress with thisat the time, there wereendeavours to develop themanifestation of ectoplasm, and these were successful.During the period, themedium would be untied bythe next-world visitors, andHarrison and his wife wouldbe secured with ‘all kinds offancy knots’ that weredifficult to untie. Harrisonreported how this wasstopped ‘as the ladiesthought it might bedangerous’. He also relates

how on one occasion, ‘LittlePeter’ (a child guide, and sonamed to differentiate himfrom another guide alsocalled Peter), spoke to asitter and referred to herpurchasing vegetables, butleaving them in a shop thatday. After asking herwhether she would like amarrow and her reply in theaffirmative, a marrow waspromptly produced throughthe trumpet.

At this point, materializations wereparticipating in the seances, being some distance fromthe medium and speakingto the sitters; in time thiswas developed even furtherwith materializations beingup to eighteen feet awayfrom the medium, andconducting lengthy andlucid conversations. Itshould be noted that Arnoldwas not a professionalmedium and made nofinancial gain from his work;when a charge was made, the proceeds were given toa charity or cause related toSpiritualism. It is remarkablethat he was able to producesuch marvellousphenomena in view of hisemployment with theAdmiralty and absencesfrom home that wererequired due to this work.

In June 1940, it waspossible to conduct seancesin a subdued (‘ice-blue’)light whereupon sitterscould see each other, although there was anoticeable effect on the

witnessed earlier, somedid occur, e.g. themovement of heavyobjects. Despite thesceptical Sidgwicks beingsatisfied with what theyhad seen, Hodgson of theSPR was not content and itwas arranged that Eusapiacome to England. She didthis in the Summer of1895 and stayed atCambridge. The seanceswere attended by anumber of members of theSPR, and it appears thatbeing unable to producethe phenomena as before,Eusapia attempted todeceive those present.Naturally, the Sidgwickswere distressed andmeasures were taken towithdraw anythingresembling a recognitionof Eusapia’s mediumship.Beloff refers to Dingwall’sopinion concerning theatmosphere prevailing atCambridge, i.e. the widegulf between Eusapia, thepeasant from Naples, andthe academics who werethere to investigate herabilities, and how thesituation was anything butcongenial. An important pointemerges here: Gratton-Guinness comments on

how the SPR ‘has had atendency to reject allevidence from a psychic ifsome of it turned out tobe fraudulent, thusignoring the argument thatsince repeatability is sohard to achieve in thesubject, there is no reasonto assume that fraud isalways repeated’.In fact, matters atCambridge were not quiteas simple as have beenmaintained. While therewere certainly occasions offraud by Eusapia, therewere also the instanceswhen the explanation offraud for the phenomenais hardly tenable. As Gauldcomments: ‘Not all the thephenomena whichoccurred could beexplained on any suchsimple hypothesis. Therewere, for instance, thecurious protuberances fromEusapia’s body which somesitters occasionallyobserved’. Moreover, inview of the behaviour ofthe SPR’s Hodgson inwhich he deliberately‘made his own control aslax as possible’, it washardly surprising that there‘were however not a fewpeople, especially amongthe continental

investigators, who felt thatall the trickery had notbeen on Eusapia’s side’. Despite what hadhappened in Cambridge,Eusapia travelled to Parisin 1898 and wasmonitored during anumber of seances byRichet again, and otherresearchers. Richet wassatisfied with what he sawand contacted Myers andsuggested that he sit withEusapia again. On doingso, he was persuaded andopenly declared thatEusapia had producedgenuine phenomena.Seances were thenconducted in Italy during1901-1902 and 1906-07,where despite theprecautions taken, phenomena occurred, including materializations. One of those attendingwas Prof. Morselli whomade a detailed record ofthe events; these werepublished in his book thatwas reviewed by the SPRthat referred to the viewthat ‘the great majority ofthe phenomena thatoccur...are genuinemanifestations’. Althoughthese were less than inearlier years, the seancesincluded ‘touches, grasps, movement of objects, appearances of hands...andoccasionally lights’,together with partialmaterializations that weresome distance away fromEusapia. The review

includes Mrs Sidgwick’scautious stancethroughout, although sheagreed there were eventsthat could not beaccounted for by Eusapiasimply freeing her limbs,e.g. materializations, tablelevitation and themovement of objects in alighted environment; shealso related how otheracademics had acceptedthe genuineness ofEusapia’ mediumship. Sheconcluded her review bysaying that Eusapia hadbeen studied byinvestigators in 1908 whowere ‘all experts in thetricks of physicalmediums’, and they had‘come substantially to thesame conclusion asProfessor Morselli’. Before the 1908experiments, there werefurther investigations, including those held atTurin and Naples during1907-1908, details ofwhich were supplied byCarrington. These includeda further examination byLombroso with membersof the medical profession, and the results wereimpressive.Following this, the 1908series of tests to whichMrs Sidgwick referred, were conducted between21 November and 19December, in the HotelVictoria, Naples. Theinvestigators, wereaccording to Beloff, ‘all

Eusapia Palladino(1854-1918) was amedium whosename continues tobe associated withboth spectacularmediumship andfraud; the impactmade by heractivity is clearlydemonstrated bythe continuingdebate. Somemight considerthe occurrence offraudulentmediumshipautomaticallyexcludes her fromany attention, butas will be shown, her mediumshipwas of a type thatactually demandsseriousconsideration.

A fter being orphanedin Bari, and havingreceived virtually no

education, Eusapia movedas a young girl to Naples, and worked in a householdwhere seances were held.It was during one whenshe was present, that hermediumistic abilitiesbecame evident, and intime, attracted attention. Her demonstrationsreceived favourable reportsthat resulted in her being

investigated by Prof.Lombroso, an enthusiasticsceptic. On witnessing thephenomena produced byher in Naples, he wassufficiently impressed toarrange a series of seancesthat took place in Milan. Inthese, a number ofacademics were alsopresent; to theiramazement, there waslevitation in the full light, and partial-materializations. As wasrecorded: ‘It is impossibleto count the number oftimes that that handappeared and was touchedby one of us; suffice it tosay that doubt was nolonger possible; it was, indeed, a living humanhand which we saw andtouched, while at the sametime the bust and arms ofthe medium remainedvisible and her hands wereheld by those on eitherside of her’. The effect ofEusapia’s mediumship onLombroso was significant;he felt it necessary towrite, and admit: ‘I amfilled with confusion andregret that I combatedwith so much persistencethe possibility of the factscalled Spiritualistic’. Hecontinued to investigatemediumship andeventually accepted theconcept of survival andthat communication waspossible: he published hisfindings in, After Death –What?

In view of the success, more researchersexamined Eusapia’smediumship, e.g. DrOchorowicz’s at Warsawduring 1893-94, and Prof.Richet at his island homein 1894. In the case of thetests by Ochorowicz, heand others present, wereconvinced of thegenuineness of thephenomena. Nonetheless, some remainedunconvinced, as Eusapiawas undoubtedly, as Beloffsays, ‘a slippery customer’.Inglis’s view is no lessuncomplimentary: ‘thatgiven a chance to try tocheat, by distracting their(the investigators’)attention and freeing ahand or foot, Eusapiawould take it’. Theproblem that arose in theinvestigation of Eusapia’smediumship was theoccurrence of phenomenathat were not genuine, and the occasions whenthese could not have beenproduced through suchmeans. Sadly, theinstances when Eusapiaresorted to trickery madethe matter of hermarvellous mediumshipextremely problematic anda source of continuingcontroversy. Additionally, many researchers foundher behaviour somewhatuncomfortable, i.e. she‘was liable on awakeningfrom her trances to throwherself into the arms of

the nearest male sitterwith unmistakable intent’. In the case of the tests atthe home of Richet, thesewere important in view ofthe hypothesis thatEusapia had accomplices toassist her; in this location, the island of Ile Roubaud, the only other residencewas a lighthouse, and thepossibility could not arise.A number of otherexperienced researchersattended, e.g. Myers andLodge of the SPR, andOchorowicz. A record wasmade of the seances thatwere held with some lightpresent; in one, there waslevitation of the table (thathad been specially made, and weighed forty-fourpounds), psychic winds, loud noises and waterbeing levitated and takento Eusapia. Richet andMyers were both graspedby unseen hands. Whilethere were reservationsabout the conditions, ‘nofraud was actuallydiscovered’. After this, the Sidgwicks ofthe SPR became involved;they represented the moresceptical element of theSPR, and certainly so inthe case of physicalphenomena. Theyattended seances atanother of Richet’s homes, near Toulon, as didOchorowicz and vonSchrenck-Notzing.Although the phenomenawere less than had been

the phenomena occurringin the presence ofEusapia’. With regard tothe production of thephenomena, he statedthat, ‘It is almostimpossible to conceive theelaborate apparatus thatwould be necessary toproduce all the effectsobserved by us’. Theresearchers noted that inthe case of touches in theseances: ‘Although thelight might be sufficient tosee the medium’s headand hands clearly, and wemight be looking in thedirection from which thetouch came, whatever itwas that produced thetouches remained unseen. In the case of faces seen:‘On the occasions whenthey appeared, theyemerged from the side ofthe curtain, came rightacross the table... bowedtwo or three times withdeliberation, and thenretired’. Additionally, theseances were accompaniedby the appearance ofdifferent-coloured lights.Of the hands thatmaterialized duringEusapia’s seances,Carrington remarked onhow: ‘Sometimes they

would be large, sometimessmall. Sometimes theywould be white, sometimes black, andsometimes invisiblealtogether. Yet they weresolid and substantial, andhad every appearance ofbeing true physiologicalstructures...I myself haveheld a hand such as this inmy grasp, and had itslowly dissolve as I washolding it’. In addition to theremarkable physicalphenomena produced byEusapia Palladino, herseances could sometimesbe rather eventful, to saythe least: one examplewas one held in 1907 inTurin for a number ofacademics. In this, Eusapiaadopted her usual customof sitting outside thecabinet. In an earlierseance, Dr Foa, one ofthose present, had seenthe profile of John Kingand had attempted toseize it. Therefore, theevents that occurred in thesecond seance are hardlysurprising; furthermore, the sitters decided to use aphotographic plate in thesession to test for anyradiation, to which the

next-world visitorsapparently took exception. With Eusapia monitoredthroughout, numerousinstances of phenomenaoccurred, e.g. completelevitations (in full light),that were followed by DrArullani wishing toapproach the curtain; atthis point, the seancetable moved towards him,and pushed him away. Hethen felt hands forcefullypushing him away(Eusapia’s own hands wereheld by the controllers atthis time). On his secondattempt, he was struck onthe head. A bright lightthen appeared and it wasdecided that Dr Fo… usethe plate for a test, but ahand materialized thatattempted to seize it andthen struck him. He madea further attempt, resulting in the handstruggling with him andmaking the plate fall on tothe table. Dr Aggazzottithen sought, somewhatunwisely, to conduct thetest and held a plate overEusapia’s head and afurther struggle ensued. The table then levitatedand passed over one ofthe sitters’ head. Once again, Dr Arullaniwent towards the tablebut it blocked his way andwent behind the curtain;Dr Fo… followed it andsaw it being wreckedinside whereupon it cameout of the cabinet and

continued to be pulledapart in front of all thesitters. Dr Arullani asked ifhe could shake hands withthe materialized hand andon nearing the curtain washit by hands and thepieces of wood that wereleft behind from the now-disintegrated table. WhenDr Arullani said thatEusapia’s power appearedto be limited to only a fewinches’ distance, Eusapiarequested that he placehimself on the seancetable. On doing so, he wasthen struck by one of thepieces of wood and thetable began to forcefullymove, and he fell off.Admittedly, this was hardlya typical Palladino seancebut is a demonstration ofwhat she could produce;clearly, no one ever fellasleep during one ofEusapia’s seances. Naturally, Eusapia fulfilledthe purpose ofmediumship andSpiritualism, i.e. to providecomfort and reassurancethrough evidence ofsurvival; one such occasionwas that recorded by DrVenzano in Annals ofPsychical Science(September, 1907). Withsomeone controllingEusapia on each side, andher being visible, Venzanorecorded being aware ofsomeone behind himweeping and kissing him;he saw and felt the face, and raps spelt out the

experienced, not to sayjaded’; in these seances, strict precautions wereapplied and a carefulaccount was made of theevents: ‘the FeildingReport’. Beloff adds thenote that this report hasbeen ‘one of themainstays of the case forthe paranormal and astumbling-block forsceptics’. The threeinvestigators represented aconsiderable amount ofexperience: Carrington, anamateur conjurer, who hadworked for the AmericanSPR, and carried out anextensive study offraudulent mediumship;Baggally, also an amateurconjurer who had a keeninterest in physicalphenomena, and who, before meeting Eusapia, had a very sceptical viewof physical mediumship;and Feilding, who wasfamiliar with physicalphenomena. The details of the conditions imposedduring the seancesindicate the methodicalarrangements made:electric lights wereinstalled and the curtainand table were carefullyexamined, with variousobjects brought in, e.g.tambourines, a trumpetand bell. A person to takeshorthand notesconcerning events duringthe seances was alsoemployed. At the beginning of theseance, one of theresearchers sat on either

side of Eusapia, holding orbeing held by her hand, his foot on or under herfoot, and his leg pressedagainst hers: Eusapia satoutside the cabinet, usually about a foot away, rather than inside it. Whenphenomena occurred, theresearchers would reportexactly what the contactwith the medium was.During the seances,Eusapia would either befully conscious, in a semi-trance, or a deep trancewhen her control, JohnKing, was apparent. In thecase of John King, as sooften happens, a numberof researchers viewed himas little more than asecondary personality, i.e.part of Eusapia’s ownmind. Nonetheless,Eusapia’s account hardlycoincides with this. Sheexplained how an Englishwoman in Naples, duringher own Spiritualistactivity, was advised by acommunicator callinghimself John King, about amedium in Naples, supplying details of whereshe lived. The woman thenvisited the address andfound Eusapia there. WhenEusapia next held aseance, the person whocommunicated was JohnKing, who from that dayremained her control. It isworth noting that as ‘JohnKing’ controlled a numberof different mediums, it ispossible those ‘prominentSpiritualists (who) came tofeel that "John King" was a

pseudonym for a group ofControls’, were correct. In the 1908 tests, certainactions by Eusapia thatallowed her to deceivewere noted and theinvestigators believed thatshe would producephenomena by suchmeans if provided with theopportunity; however, itwas agreed that suchbehaviour could notaccount for what waswitnessed during theseances. Furthermore, it isinteresting to note that itwas observed, ‘we did notfind the reduction of light, and the consequentincreased facility for fraudhad any effect’. It was alsostated that the amount ofcontrol exerted by theresearchers over Eusapia’sfreedom of movement didnot unfavourably influencethe phenomena. In the record of the elevenseances, it is apparent thatthe phenomena improved;in the first, there was onlyobject movement andnoises, but by the fifth, there was complete andpartial but lengthylevitations together withpartial materializations.During the third, itappeared that Eusapia hadsubstituted her hands;however, it was notviewed as an intention todeceive, apart from thefact that in previousseances, accompanied byphenomena, there wassufficient light to prevent

this happening. Shortlyafterwards, Eusapia, beingaware of thedissatisfaction caused, asked for her hands to betied, and this was done;nonetheless, differentphenomena continued inthe seance. The record made of thefifth seance related theincidents that occurred:-After it began, thephenomena began almostimmediately; firstly, therepeated movement of thetable, and raps; then, theappearance of a hand anda face; this was followedby further tablemovement, thematerialization of a hand, and a cold psychic breeze.Throughout the seance, those present meticulouslyreported what they werewitnessing and theircontrol of Eusapia at thesame time. At the end ofthe seance, Eusapiavolunteered to besearched. This was alsocarried out after the sixthseance when Eusapiaagreed to be closelysearched and the sittersreported, ‘nothing wasconcealed about herperson or her clothes’. Thisseance was no lesseventful and Baggallymade the interesting notethat just before anyphenomena occurred,Eusapia would advisethem of what was tohappen; this of course isthe absolute opposite of aconjurer who needs todistract the audience’sattention away from whatis to occur and avoidgiving any warningbeforehand.Of this particular seance,Carrington reported that it‘has left on my mind anindelible impression of thereality of at least some of

referred to as ‘one of themost astute critics’, andGauld’s note that thesceptical Baggally ‘had satwith every notable physicalmedium since Home andhad found them allwanting’. But challengessuch as this often arise, resulting in lengthy, speculative, and invariablyunproductive discussions. In fact, Wiseman actuallyagrees that theinvestigators were highlyexperienced, and refers toCarrington’s ‘extensiveinvestigations’, howFeilding had been referredto as ‘one of the mostastute critics’, and Gauld’snote that the scepticalBaggally ‘had sat withevery notable physicalmedium since Home andhad found them allwanting’. But challengessuch as this often arise, resulting in lengthy, speculative, and invariablyunproductive discussions.Sceptics will scour throughreports of many decadesago for anything thatappears to be an omissionof detail, sometimes veryminor, and from this, construct an imaginative,

if not an entertaining, theory. In sum, producingan argument from silence. For example, Wiseman saysthat it is ‘interesting’ thatBaggally, whose room wasnext to the seance room, only mentions that helocked his door, but notthat he bolted it..Many readers may, justifiably, have seriousdifficulty in decidingwhether Wiseman is evenbeing serious here.Nonetheless, he is clearlysurpassed by Kurtz; onesuggestion to explain awaythe events during the 1908Naples sittings is byproposing that Carringtonmight have been in leaguewith Eusapia. Better still, the researchers were takenin by Eusapia who was, after all, ‘a woman, voluptuous and erotic toboot’.In respect of researchersopting for the explanationthat fraud ‘could’ take placein certain episodes,Gratton-Guinness makesthe salient observationthat, ‘if all scientific workwere treated this way, thenscience would disintegraterather quickly into a

collection of scientistsrejecting all evidenceexcept their own’. Thereality is that a unique setof rules and conditions areapplied to psychicalresearch, which are notfound elsewhere, and theobvious reason is that thesubject represents theultimate challenge to mostspheres of thinking. AsBeloff so rightly remarks ofattributing fraud to all thatEusapia produced: ‘Trickeryis, of course, another ofthose convenient open-ended and slipperyconcepts that...can beinvoked to explain anythingwhatsoever’.It is of course those whomet and sat with Eusapiawhose opinions carry themost weight: Carringtoncites the comment of PaolaCarrara, the daughter ofProf. Lombroso, thatEusapia, ‘has been carriedon the wing of universalrenown and yet she hasnever cast off theswaddling clothes ofilliteracy...She knowsnothing of all the rivers ofink which have been spentupon her’. She continued byadding that Eusapia’s facewas marked by suffering, caused through the effortthat was required toproduce physicalphenomena. Possiblyrelevant to her willingnessto ‘help things along’ onoccasions, Carringtonremarked that after a

successful seance, Eusapiabecame unwell, ‘shrunkentogether, weak,nauseated... her face deeplylined and sallow’. One onlyhas to read a history ofEusapia’s mediumship, andthe lengthy list ofacademics who monitoredher in so many seances(only some of these beingdetailed here), to realizethe full extent of what shedid, in a comparativelyshort period of time.

In 1918, Eusapia Palladino, the rotund, almost illiterateand coarse peasant fromNaples, who delighted, confounded anddisappointed so manyinvestigators, died. She wassurely the medium whowas more investigated thanany others during thisperiod, and whose featswill surely continue toprovoke controversy andheated debate. But the lastword on the matter may bestated by Feilding, a scepticuntil his encounter withEusapia: after commentingon having to abandon hisinitial scepticism, hedeclared: ‘I have seenhands and heads comeforth, that from behind thecurtain of an emptycabinet. I have been seizedby living fingers...I haveseen this extraordinarywoman sitting visibleoutside the curtain, heldhand and foot by mycolleagues, immobile.’

visitor’s name; this being arelative who had diedearlier, and was known tono one present excepthimself. The relative, whohad been part of a familydispute, requestedforgiveness for her part inthis, giving relevant andpersonal information aboutthe matter, this beingaudible to the other sitters. After Venzano accepted herapologies and began tooffer his own, he statedthat, ‘The form then said tome, "Thank you," embracedme, kissed me, anddisappeared.’ In 1909, Eusapia travelledto America and receivedextensive publicity; shewas tested by academicsand investigators, andpossibly because she feltapprehensive as she hadbeen in Cambridge, sheresorted to trickery. Whenshe left in 1910, ‘she wasthoroughly discredited’.Muensterberg, a Harvardpsychologist, who hadvociferously denounced anysuch thing as physicalphenomena and wasinvolved in Eusapia’sdownfall, made a report ofhis findings. It was Krebs, also a sceptic, who laterpointed out that the reportwas unsatisfactory; andafter Eusapia died, anumber of those who hadbeen associated with thereport admitted they hadwitnessed phenomena thatwere inexplicable andgenuine, and one admittedthat he only agreed withthe report begrudgingly.Despite all the problems inAmerica, Carringtonsupplied details of Eusapia’smediumship there andhow, during the differentseances, remarkablephenomena weremanifested: ‘Levitation ofthe table... raps...the

curtains of the cabinetwould blow out... the bellwould be rung, thetambourine played upon..."touchings" would ensue, and occasionally visiblehands and faces would beseen’. Carrington alsoexplained that in the caseof when she could notproduce any phenomenaand resorted to fraud (thathe believed was only‘occasional’): ‘She felt induty bound to producephenomena. Here she feltwas a group of sitters whohad come to see her: shemust not disappoint them;they must see something!’.He considered that by thetime of her American visit, her powers had declinedand she was not able toproduce the phenomena ofearlier years. In dealingwith the occasions ofEusapia’s trickery, hebelieved that it was asimple matter of the sittersshowing their displeasureand on her realizing this,‘she will settle down, passinto trance, and genuinephenomena will beobtained’. When Eusapiawas accused of cheating, she did not deny it. Nicolmentions how, ‘On oneoccasion she cried out inher Neapolitan dialect,"Hold me tight or I’llcheat"’. In such instances, it appeared that she wasaware that something wasabout to happen to herthat would make thispossible or likely. Howeverthis strange behaviour isinterpreted, it is hardly thebehaviour of someonewhose sole intent isdeceiving those nearby. It was the sitting byHoward Thurston, arenowned professionalmagician, thatdemonstrates an excellentexample of Eusapia’s

behaviour and supportsCarrington’s viewmentioned above.Carrington took Thurston toEusapia for a seance and assoon as it began, the twomen observed Eusapia hadlifted the table with hertoe. Carrington shook hishead and said, ‘Not good,Eusapia’. Then: ‘Shethereupon smiled also, settled down in her chair, went into a light trance, and soon produced a seriesof perfectly magnificentgenuine levitations, whichso convinced Thurston thathe came out in the papersthe next day with athousand-dollar challengeto any magician who couldproduce table levitationsunder the same conditions. The challenge was neveraccepted’. The reality was:‘The mischievous, impishself of the medium tryingto "pull something", just forfun, and when she sawthat she could not getaway with it with impunity, she then produced thegenuine article.Nonetheless, by this time,Eusapia’ powers wereclearly on the wane. Thedecline in her powers isillustrated by the fact thatwhen Baggally, whowitnessed her mediumshipin 1908 and with theothers, accepted this asgenuine, saw her again in1910, he found no sign ofgenuine phenomena; herecorded the ‘spuriousnature’ of what happenedand how Eusapia pleadedill-health to explain the lackof phenomena, but drilyconcluded, ‘Shenevertheless accepted herfull fee’. An example of thecontinuing controversyregarding Eusapia isWiseman’s ‘AReconsideration’ of the

Feilding Report in 1992, inwhich he discusses thepossibility of Eusapiahaving an accompliceduring the seances thatwere held in the hotel, bywhich the phenomenacould have beenfraudulently produced, mentioning a trap door, ahidden access into the loft, and false door panels. Thiswas answered byBarrington and Fontana;appropriately, Barringtonentitled her response as‘Palladino and the InvisibleMan Who Never Was’;Fontana rightly notes thatWiseman’s case isessentially based on ‘theambiguities and omissionsin the Report’, and in viewof what is suggested, wehave to consider that allthree investigators ‘lefttheir critical faculties(indeed their brains)behind them in Britainwhen they set off for thehotel in Naples’.(In fact,Wiseman actually agreesthat the investigators werehighly experienced, andrefers to Carrington’s‘extensive investigations’,how Feilding had been

are made by Genie CCTV Ltd.The camera has producedviewable pictures withoutusing infrared illuminationwith lighting so subduedthat sitters could only justmake out the medium’sfeatures with their own eyes.Although DNR improves acamera’s sensitivity, it alsotends to give an artificialtexture to the picture, facesin particular. The effect isdepending on the degree ofprocessing applied (usuallyadjustable). Also DNR canaffect a camera’s ability tofollow fast movement. Thisis because in order to reducepicture noise, adjacentframes are compared andthen modified (put simply). CCTV cameras are not nearlyso user friendly ascamcorders. They do notusually have auto focusability and need additionalitems in order to make up anoperational system. Theadditional equipment willneed to include a stereorecording system as mostquality cameras do notinclude sound. This will becovered more fully in Part 7. For additional information onCCTV cameras please readthe section on ‘Zero VisibleLight’.

Zero VisibleLightCamcordersMany camcorders have theability to produce

monochrome images underno visible light conditions byilluminating the immediatearea in front of thecamcorder with an invisibleinfrared beam. The intensityof the fairly narrow beam, compared to the typicalcamcorder on wide anglesetting, is usually only strongenough to produce areasonable image up toabout 2 metres awaywithout the use of asupplementary infrared lightsource. Equipment to supplementcamcorder infrared built-inlighting will be covered inPart 7 together with manypractical details. However, the home made infraredlight shown next to the CCTVcamera will enable mostcamcorders with infraredcapability to see images 4 ormore metres away. The quality of imageproduced using infrared lightis nothing like that producedin normal mode and is inmonochrome. So don’texpect the wonderful clarityof outdoor videoing thatmodern digital camcorderscan achieve with our holidayshots. One point worth mentioningat this stage is that using acamcorder LCD viewingscreen to check focussing etcwill flood the séance roomwith light. The old fashionedviewfinder is far less lightpolluting, but these arebecoming rare on modelsunder £800.

PIONEERS AND EDUCATION>>34

In Part 5 we lookedat videoing eventsfrom publicmeetings to trancecircles. However, videoing physicalséances isconsiderably morechallenging.

The very low intensity lightlevel commonly usednecessitates using verysensitive cameras to producesatisfactory results. Wheretotal darkness is demanded, infrared techniques arerequired. This can beachieved by infraredillumination or by usingthermal imaging equipmentrelying on natural infraredradiation from humanbodies. It is important to point outthat it is often assumed thatinfrared light does not affectectoplasm. There is evidenceto prove otherwise and greatcare must be taken whenusing infrared illumination toavoid damage to themedium’s body. All suchexperiments should beperformed with the fullcooperation of the medium’sspirit control.

SubduedLightingDepending on just howsubdued the lighting is willdetermine whether acamcorder will produce

satisfactory results orwhether a much morecomplicated system will berequired using a securitytype CCTV camera. Also, ofcourse, the quality of imagethat is desired to bereproduced may be a majorfactor.

CamcordersFor the low intensity lightlevels sometimes used intransfiguration work, orséances where a small redlight is used, a betterperformance camcorder mayproduce a reasonablepicture. Using the techniquesdescribed in Part 5 withslowing down shutter speed, and manually controlling thesensitivity of the camcorder, some models are claimed toachieve a viewable imagedown to 1 Lux inmonochrome. Satisfactorycolour images will require ahigher level above 10 Lux orso. Models like the recent SonyHDR-SR11 or -SR12 (Photo 1)are specified as producing animage down to 5 Lux using aslow shutter speed setting. I have successfully used aHDR-SR11 in a trance circlewith subdued lighting butthe quality of the image wasnot great. For lower light levels it isnecessary to consider moreexpensive camcorders orCCTV cameras specificallydesigned for very lowintensity light levels down to0.002 Lux. These are

featured in the next sectionand also later in this Part 6.For more information on Luxvalues please see Part 5 ofthis series in Issue 21 August2008.The long microphonemounted on top of the SonyHDR-SR11 camera is a‘shotgun’ type. It is highlydirective and ideal forpicking-up sounds severalfeet away in front of thecamera. This makes it idealfor situations such asrecording the typicalwhispers or quiet voiceswhen direct voice isbeginning to manifest.Be aware camcorders oftenhave difficulty inautomatically focusing at lowintensity lighting levels. So itis essential to use a modelthat has easy-to-use manualfocusing controls.Unfortunately mostcamcorders under £800 or soonly have a rocker typeswitch for manual focus. Thisis more difficult to usecompared to a rotary control,or the even better rotatinglens barrel on older models(or expensive semi-professional models). With subdued lighting, thewide open setting of thelens iris in order to get asmuch light in as possiblemeans a small focus depthof field. This is alright if allphenomena occur at thesame distance from thecamcorder. However, if thisdistance varies there is likelyto be insufficient light for

autofocus mechanisms towork and disappointingshots will result. Leaving thecamera on manual focussetting may be inevitable.

CCTV CamerasThe popularity of ClosedCircuit Television (CCTV) fordomestic and commercialsecurity surveillance hasbrought down the cost ofhighly sensitive videocameras. Many models willautomatically switch fromdaytime mode to infrarednight mode when there isinsufficient light for ordinarymonochrome mode. Also, many have built-in infraredilluminators whichunfortunately are usually toopowerful for use in theséance room being intendedto illuminate humans 5 plusmetres away.Models are available atreasonable cost achieving0.3 Lux in colour, 0.1 Lux inmonochrome and 0.002 Luxusing Dynamic NoiseProcessing (DNR). Howeverthese are theoretical valuesas light losses throughwhatever particular lens isfitted will reduce thissensitivity. Even a goodquality lens will absorb15% of the light passingthrough it.Photo 2 shows a model withthe above Lux specification. It is model DNR5352 DUP,and in this photo, fitted withan infrared corrected 7.5 to50mm F1.3 zoom lens modelGL7550 IR DD. Both items

CCTV CamerasAll the comments in the‘Subdued Lighting’ sectionon CCTV cameras also applyto this section. Top-of-the-range CCTV cameras, such asthe model quoted earlier, will significantly out performgeneral purpose domestictype camcorders on pricewith respect to subdued andzero light performance. Thebiggest drawback is theamount of equipment that isneeded to make up anoperational system, all ofwhich will be covered inPart 7.Practically all of the cheaperCCTV cameras have a smalllens and a small diameterlight sensor (CCD). They justcannot produce acceptableresults in the infrared modewithout a powerful infraredlight source which would betotally unacceptable in theséance room. The affect onthe phenomena is likely tobe substantial and medium’shealth put at serious risk(see next section). However, accounts of phenomenabeing produced withoutectoplasm (such as the ScoleExperiment) may be adifferent case altogether. The Genie camera and lensmentioned earlier hascertain features that aremissing on cheaper models. It has: 1. A 1/3 inch CCD light

sensor – which is large bycamcorder and CCTVstandards.

2. Automatic switching tosupplement visible lightwith infrared light.

3. Dynamic Noise Processing, the degree of which canbe adjusted to suitparticular conditions.

4. An electrical output todrive a lens iris foroptimising light enteringthe camera.

5. The particular lens fitted isinfrared focuscompensated, meaningthat the focussing can beset up with visible lightand does not have to berefocused for infraredlight.

The ability of the camera todetect infrared energy at the

same time as visiblemonochrome light energymeans that when using alow intensity red light in aséance, the camera willproduce a better picture thancameras without this ability. This is due to the fact thatincandescent red light bulbsproduce infrared energy aswell as visible red light. Thusthe camera adds the infraredenergy to the visible lightenergy to give a brighterpicture. It is common for this abilityto be prevented incamcorders where lightfilters are switched in andout of the light path to thesensor in order to givecorrect colour balance whenoperated in the normalvisible light mode.

Camcorders orCCTV Cameras?Being self-contained,camcorders are much moreconvenient to use comparedto CCTV cameras which needsubstantial amounts ofsupport equipment toproduce a recording system. What is required will becovered in Part 7.For subdued lighting, abetter performancecamcorder may produceacceptable results. In totaldarkness, the infrared modemay be satisfactory if thelevel of infrared energyneeded to produce an imageis not harmful to themedium or phenomena. For seriously subduedlighting, where themedium’s features are onlyjust visible to the sitters, aquality CCTV camera ispractically a necessity unlessspending a lot of money ona professional typecamcorder with large lensand matching CCD lightsensor. So, value for money wise, the CCTV camera wins for themore exacting conditions, beit for very subdued visiblelight or for the lowest levelsof infrared radiation. Unlike camcorders, mostCCTV cameras have noautomatic focus so need tobe manually focussed.

Recording séances and other eventsContinued...

However, as camcorders areunlikely to focus satisfactoryat the light levels beingconsidered this disadvantageis not so serious as firstappears. If you want to use acamcorder and your mainrequirement is to video in redlight without using infraredillumination, then considertrying the infrared mode(usually termed ‘Night Mode’or something similar) withthe infrared illuminatorcovered up and a betterpicture may result. See lasttwo paragraphs in last sectionfor explanation as to why.

Infrared DangersIt is often assumed bySpiritualists that infraredenergy can be safely usedduring physical séanceswhere visible light cannot betolerated. However, therehave been reports that this isnot the case and warningsby Spirit workers (guides etc)are not unfounded. Tom Harrison reported that ittook several weeks ofpreparation by his Mother’sspirit helpers before theycould build up sufficientprotection to allow infraredphotos to be taken ofectoplasm produced in herséances. The most conclusiveevidence as to thedetrimental effects ofinfrared energy is containedin Leslie Flint’sautobiography, Voices In TheDark. Brigadier Firebracedescribed (chapter 11) howan infrared telescopetogether with an invisibleinfrared light was used toview the ectoplasmic voicebox in one of Flint’sindependent direct voiceséances. The séances startedand the voices were at muchreduced volume to usual. However, part the waythrough the voices suddenlycame up to normal volume.

It was found that the bulb inthe infrared light source hadsuddenly burnt out thusindicating the energy had asignificant affect upon theectoplasm. As the lightsource emitted no visiblelight only the telescopeobserver would have beenaware of why the voices hadreturned to normal volume. Thus it is no wonder that wereceive warnings of the useof infrared energy in theséance room. The only thingto our advantage is thatmodern equipment requiresless infrared energy toproduce visible images.

ThermalImagingFor some time now thermalimaging cameras have beenused to detect energy in theform of heat radiating fromliving and nonliving sources. They are used to locatehumans, animals andinanimate objects, such asheat escaping from poorlyinsulated buildings. Noinfrared light source is used. The cameras rely purely ondetecting infrared energy. The intensity of the infraredradiation is proportional tothe temperature of thesubject/object. Those who have watched TVprogrammes showing policehelicopters chasing criminalsat night will realise thatthermal imaging techniqueshave advanced somewhat inrecent years. However, theimage quality is poor and thecost rather high. Fastmovement is rather blurredas ‘far infrared’ is used ratherthan ‘near infrared’, as usedin video cameras. Thisradiation is more akin to heatradiation rather than lightradiation with a noticeabletime interval being requiredto build up an image. Thusthe blurred image if theliving body or objectradiating heat moves about.

Detecting EctoplasmWhether ectoplasm canalways be detected usingThermal Imaging(thermography) techniquesis unknown. We don’t knowif there is sufficient physicalheat in ectoplasm, in itsmany forms, to even showup on cameras. Although Ihave held ectoplasmic handsthat feel really warm, is itgenuine physical heat or“psychic heat”? By psychic heat I mean theexperience healers oftenhave of sensing our handsfeeling intensely hot whenthe patient feels the veryopposite. The sensation canbe the other way aroundwith the healer sensing coldhands and the patientexperiencing heat. The most practicalapplication for thermalimaging is to ascertainwhere the medium (orassociates) is/are located inthe séance room when totaldarkness is used and themedium is not secured tohis/her chair. There was a case of aphysical medium givingpublic séances, whoallegedly, would not be tiedto her chair or wearluminous tabs. Thus it wasimpossible to determineconclusively the classificationof the phenomena occurring,be it ectoplasm drapedaround the medium or aseparate materialised formwho had been wanderingaround the séance room – or yet other explanations. Thermal imaging techniquescould have resolved thisissue. However, there arecheaper and easier ways ofdoing that, such as loadsensors under the chair legsto register if the chairs arevacated.

Thermographiccameras For those who want to

investigate thermal imagingthere is plenty of informationon the Web. As a starter, thehandheld InfraCAM by FLIRSystems is available at£3000. This device has asmall LCD type screen similarto those fitted to compactdigital cameras. Similarly, it iscapable of storing up 50 JPEGimages. The screen wouldneed to be blanked out so asnot to illuminate the séanceroom. Dearer models willsend live (real-timestreaming) video images to aDVD recorder or computer. One of the most commonusages of these handhelddevices is for electricians todetected dangerous over-heating wiring. For our application this typeof device needs to bemounted on a tripod. Withthe screen blanked out toprevent illuminating theroom, it would be difficult topoint the camera in the rightdirection once the lights areput out. The more expensiveversions with a video outputare a better bet as they canoutput to a computer, enabling a whole séance tobe checked afterwards. The models used byemergency services todetected human (or animal)bodies are more sensitiveand versatile, and as onewould expect, with a pricetag to match.

IN PART SEVENIn the next Part in this seriesI hope there will be enoughspace to cover: thepracticalities of videoingséances; the equipmentneeded to support a CCTVcamera; the precautionarymeasures in the use ofinfrared energy in the séanceroom; and finally, photographs reproducedfrom videos taken by thecamcorder and CCTV cameramentioned in this article.
