Dear Intercollegiate Taiwanese American Students Association National Board,

On behalf of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign 2014 - 2015 Intercollegiate Taiwanese American Students Association Conference Bid Team, we would like to sincerely thank you for the opportunity to present our bid for the 2015 ITASA Midwest Conference. Our bid team has put in countless hours of effort and dedication into creating this bid packet for a unique and engaging conference. If given the honor to host the next Midwest Conference at UIUC, we agree to abide by all of the ITASA policies and rules as well as request permission to use the ITASA name and resources. We agree to uphold the mission of ITASA to its highest regard if the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was selected to host the 2015 ITASA Midwest Conference. The first ITASA Midwest Conference was held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1992. Now 22 years and six successful Midwest Conferences later, we are eager to continue the tradition our alumni started. Since our attempted bid in 2013, we have been drawing from feedback and working profusely to correct the mistakes we committed. We now believe we have the complete resources, the manpower, and the passion to host the 2015 ITASA Midwest Conference at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In order to make our effort a reality, our bidding team was carefully selected with the most passionate individuals and each brings a diversity of wisdom, leadership ability, and imagination. We also enlisted the support and advice of previous UIUC ITASA Midwest Conference boards in order to develop fresh and innovative ideas from their experiences.

The Taiwanese community is one of the largest and strongest cultural communities not solely on our campus but also across the United States. We believe holding the 2015 ITASA Midwest Conference here at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign will increasingly promote Taiwanese culture on campus, empower Taiwanese American students to become leaders and positive members in their community, and inspire students to pursue their passions. We will be sure to present a memorable and refreshing conference for all attendees. Thank you for the time and consideration to review our bid. We are honored to be able to present our hard work to the Intercollegiate Taiwanese American Student Association National Board.

Sincerely,UIUC ITASA 2014-2015 Midwest Conference Bid Team

SUMMARY

Page 4: Itasa 2015 bid final

Theme Every story follows a format. Starting with the exposition, we learn about the protagonist’s background. Through the rising action, the main character explores his or her individuality and personhood. At this stage, obstacles arise and challenge the protagonist to grow and discover who he or she is to the peak of the story. Decisions at each stage come together at the climax in the defining moment for the protagonist.

For many, the years we spend in college follow a format—one full of obstacles obstructing our path. As the lead in our own stories, we must answer critical questions such as who we identify ourselves as, what career path we want to pursue, and how we fit into the larger community. How do we handle evolving interests, a developing personality, and a growing understanding of our place within society?

Life encounters bumpy roads from the start. People may attempt to enumerate every detail at every stage of their life, however they never go according to plan. As we are bombarded with the unexpected, we have the opportunity to embrace hardships and learn from our experiences. From limitations by physical boundaries, socioeconomic status, and mental barriers, the abilities to face the unexpected and to remain undeterred from our mission is an invaluable skill that will unequivocally strengthen the Taiwanese American and Asian American community. As individuals in a diverse community, these are the challenges of our lives. This is the plot twist.

VisionCore ValuesEXPOSE - We hope to create an experience

that will expose others to a self discovery--to

find a facet of oneself that was never found

whether it be courage or a passion.

GROW - We strive to help others grow not

only as well rounded people, but as influen-

tial leaders who seek to inspire others to not

be just supporting characters of their story.

EMERGE - We aim to have people emerge

out of their comfort zones to go out and

reach their conclusion of their college chap-

ter as their own protagonist in their own

stories.

We strive to host an inspiring conference that encourages individuals to branch out of their comfort zones, prepares them for the adversity that awaits after college, and stimulates personal and professional growth for those who attend.

About the Venues

Within the Champaign-Urbana campus, we have hand-picked locations that play into our theme. The Illini Union is at the heart of campus and represents traditional aspects that retain the history of this university, whereas the Thomas M. Siebel Center is a modern building that embodies the opportunities to build a new future through this university.

Our team has successfully negotiated with Hampton Inn--which is just a few blocks away from our main venue, Thomas M. Siebel Center--for group rates. There will be the option to book hotel rooms with two queen beds provided that can accommodate up to 4 people for $30/person a night. The other option we have for hotels is the Illini Union Hotel--located in the Illini Union on campus--and will be in the same building as the sign-in location on Friday as well as where the banquet will be held. The rate for the Illini Union Hotel can accommodate to 4 people for $25/person a night. There will also be the option for student housing if absolutely necessary.

The Illini Union is at the heart of campus and offers many unique rooms and activities throughout the day. Within the Union is the traditional grand Illini Ballroom, where sign in and icebreakers will take place. After icebreakers, those who have already signed in may start filing down to the basement of the Union where the Rec Room is located. The Rec Room offers bowling and billiards and will be available for the conference attendees with unlimited bowling tournaments and billiard games until the reserved time is up. After the events on Friday, everyone can return to their housing options either in the Illini Union Hotel or the Hampton Inn, which is just a couple blocks from the Thomas M. Siebel Center, where most of our workshops will be held. The Siebel Center offers vast modern classrooms and lecture rooms for the breakfast gathering, keynote speaker, and workshop spaces. The Civil Environmental Engineering Building across the street offers attendees the opportunity to get some fresh air and also enter into a different environment as another workshop location later in the day. When the workshops finish, everyone will be free to roam around campus until it’s time to reconvene at the heart of campus for the banquet in the Illini Union. Bus passes will be provided for all attendees outside of the university to travel from place to place as an option of transportation.

What does dynamic small groups mean?

Typically at a conference, an attendee will be put into a traditional small group that is static and concrete. After speaking with many people that have attended various conferences in the past, though, most have expressed a dislike with having fixed small groups.

WHAT PEOPLE DIDN’T LIKE :• Not being given the chance to meet people from other small groups

• Not having the right chemistry with people in their small group which makes them want to join another small group or make them feel isolated and awkward in their assigned groups.

TO FIX THOSE PROBLEMS, WE PROPOSE CREATING DYNAMIC SMALL GROUPS. • After a workshop, instead of walking to a new location to meet up with small groups, they will be in the same room as the workshop was held in.

• Small groups will consist of the same people who attend the same workshops.

• People will be given the chance to meet and greet others who attended the same workshop

• After next workshop, no one will go to their previous small group. Instead, they will stay in the same room and the small group will consist of those people in the same workshop they just attended—thus, creating a new and different small group compared to the previous one from the last workshop

HOW THIS BENEFITS:• Gives attendees the opportunity to meet as many people as they can,

•Attendees will not be forced to commit to one single small group throughout the conference.

Q. “When I’m in a small group, I feel at ease knowing that there is always a home base and a small group leader that I can ask questions like where the banquet will be or when lunch is. How would you incorporate that in these dynamic small groups?“

A. To replace that feeling of “home base” through small group leaders, we will provide hotline numbers specifically for people with last names starting with the letter A to D. Hotline numbers will be provided on the app we plan to build, conference booklet, and back of nametags that will be provided. Attendees will be able to call or text those numbers and whoever is in charge of that hotline will answer the specific question that was asked. There will be several people listed for groups of certain letters.

Q. “What about people who feel they connect well with a specific small group? Won’t they be losing out on the opportunity to get to know certain individuals at a more personal level?”

A. We believe there’s plenty of time to get to know people even more through the breaks and transition time we give before each workshop as well as during the banquet and afterset, not to mention the day after as well. If there is someone who wants to get to know another person, they are more then welcome to do so during those breaks. These dynamic small groups are just a way to let people get the most out of networking from the conference with the amount of people we get. It’s better to meet more people through multiple groups that someone can connect with rather than being confined in a group that someone doesn’t connect with at all.

We have a very committed and determined team--we have spent a long time creating this bid and with these aspects we will put in all our efforts to execute a successful conference. In addition to that, we are very talented and passionate team players. Despite having a small bid team, we have successfully put together this bid that we think will most benefit the Taiwanese American community through our dif ferent strengths. With these talented leaders, we can only grow stronger and mature professionally as we try to make our idea of the conference a reality. On campus, we have a very strong Taiwanese American community evident with three Taiwanese organizations on campus. Since the Taiwanese American community is very closely knit, their support can only benefit ITASA and the creation of this conference. We also have the support of the Asian American community since our committee is very diverse and have connections to those in the community who are not Taiwanese American. This allows us to further the spread of Taiwanese culture to different communities.

Our planning committee is very small compared to other bids that have presented, which means that each of our members have put in more effort--especially since most are the only one in charge of the different aspects of the bid. Even though our committee is small, we were able to compile the bid together into this finished product. If we were to get the bid, we plan to create applications and offer them to the Asian American community so they can apply to be on the team for the next school year. After they apply, we plan to conduct individual interviews to see if they are determined, if they can act professionally, and if they can work well with others. Another disadvantage we have is that most of the members of our committee have not attended a regional ITASA conference, so they do not know what to base the conferences and workshops off of. Considering the fact that they have not attended an ITASA conference before, though, we believe that this is our chance to show how creative our members are as we try to make an innovative conference. This gives us an opportunity to create more original ideas that stray from tradition.

Strengths

Weaknesses

Page 20: Itasa 2015 bid final

The University of Illinois at Urbana - Champaign would be honored to serve as the host of the 2015 Intercollegiate Taiwanese American Students Association Midwest Conference. We believe the combination of a passionate bid team with a strong Taiwanese American presence on campus allows our university to host a successful conference that will spark inspiration in the heart of our future student leaders. The diversity of our bid team and our countless hours of dedication gives us the quality to create innovative workshops for all attendees to engage in a unique conference.

We passionately believe our theme Plot Twist, proposed workshops, and potential speakers will not only strengthen the individuality and culture within the Taiwanese American audience, but also ade-quately prepare college students for the unexpected after their graduation. If the 2015 ITASA Mid-west Conference were to be held at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, we can expose students to self-discovery, stimulate growth into becoming well-rounded people, and allow students to emerge of their comfort zones. Through the support of the robust Asian American community on campus, we are prepared to host a conference that influences students to become the protagonists of their own life story.
