I feel very privileged to be able to shine this spotlight on Italy’s winemakers – one of the first selections offered by The Wine Society since travel restrictions were introduced. Over the last few years I have been lucky to spend a lot of time in Italy, meeting all the growers with whom we work, spending time poking around their wineries, tasting in their cellars, and on many occasions eating at their kitchen tables.

Their thoughtfulness and skill in vineyard and cellar have left a huge impression on me, but so too has their hospitality and extraordinary passion for what they do.

The memories of these moments go some way to compensate for the bizarre travel circumstances we are all facing at the time of writing. Seeing an older winemaker fight back tears while telling us of his pride in his daughter now taking on the reins, for example. Or having dinner with the whole family, including both the very old and the very young, digging in to neverending plates of prosciutto (or best yet, pasta made by Nonna).

I am of course longing to get back on a plane and into a Fiat Panda to see these people again soon and enjoy their wines. In the meantime, I have put together this selection of wines from some of our best-loved suppliers, and some of their best wines.

Every bottle here offers real character, making the most of Italy’s remarkable paintbox of grape varieties, covering the full length of this wonderful country and offering great value across a range of prices. I hope you are able to enjoy these safely this summer while reminiscing about holidays past in Italy, and planning those to come!

The Society’s Verdicchio Classico 2019One of Italy’s best buys, this well-made single-vineyard verdicchio makes a great full dry white with fresh crisp flavour. A delight on its own but able to stand up very well to food as well. 12.5%ref IB-IT28781 s1o£8.50 bottle | £102 dozen

Regaleali Bianco, Tasca d’Almerita 2019A blend of local white grapes perfected by this famous estate over some five decades, making for balanced, gently dry companionable drinking with a delicately fruity nose and plenty of fresh fruit flavours. 12.5%ref IB-IT29731 p2£8.50 bottle | £102 dozen

Vermentino di Sardegna localia, Melis 2019The vermentino grape thrives close to the sea, and is a speciality in Sardinia. Puglia Bianco, A Mano 2019Popular, exuberantly fragrant blend of two native Italian grapes, fiano and greco, ripened by the southern sun. Full of ripe apricot and peach flavours. 12%ref IB-IT29171 s3£9.50 bottle | £114 dozen

Ribolla Gialla, Friuli, Puiatti 2019Following our successful Bin Series bottling featuring this concentrated and characterful grape variety from north-east Italy, this is another very smart ribolla gialla to enjoy. 2016: A Tuscan Trio caseDouble up on three stars of a perfect vintage.A six-bottle case containing two bottles of each of the following:

• Chianti Rufina Riserva Borgo Prunatelli 2016• Rosso di Montalcino, Poggio Antico 2016• Chianti Classico Riserva Brolio,

Barone Ricasoli 2016ref IB-MX20251 £125

Chianti Rufina Riserva Borgo Prunatelli 2016Borgo Prunatelli is the jewel in the Grati family’s crown; a very special estate at the summit of the Villa di Vetrice hill, cultivated and certified organic. Sangiovese comprises 85% of the vineyard, but Gualberto also uses several rarer native Tuscan varieties including abrostine, colorino, mammolo, grande noir, and samforte which add to the complexity. In this lovely vintage the wine has great charm, perfume and personality, with wild cherry, spice and balsamic notes developing as it opens up. Drink now to 2024. 13.5%

Rosso di Montalcino, Poggio Antico 2016Montalcino also enjoyed a great vintage, and this, made from fruit in the south of the region, was aged for ten months in 500-litre French oak tonneaux. This has allowed the wine to open up and bring its rich spicy fruit to the fore. Only lightly filtered, it should ideally be decanted off its sediment before drinking this year and next. 14%

Chianti Classico Riserva Brolio, Barone Ricasoli 2016A fine Chianti from this great vintage, characterised by black fruit, spice and a gorgeous creamy texture. Its excellent balance will be maintained in bottle for years to come. Drink now to 2026. 14%

The 2016 vintage in Tuscany is incredibly exciting, with practically perfect conditions and wonderful, elegant wines. I’ve chosen three that really stood out for me here, available only in this special mixed case.

Barolo Roggeri, Ciabot Berton 2010We have released this great-vintage Barolo from our cellar reserves as it creeps into its drinking window. Splendid, full-flavoured and generous, with appealing flowery bouquet and seductive fruit, combining power and elegance. This excellent vineyard in the hands of Marco Oberto and his sister Paola, makes one of the La Morra commune’s most impressive wines. Drink now to 2024. 14.5%ref IB-IT19131£26 bottle | £312 dozen

Ghemme, Torraccia del Piantavigna 2009Just to the north of the more famous Barolo, Ghemme is also made from nebbiolo. This aged example shows a fine yet complex perfume of early-season strawberries and leather that will open up on decanting. Its firm yet integrated tannins make it a great choice for hard cheese or a good steak. Drink now to 2023. 13.5%ref IB-IT27801£27 bottle | £324 dozen

Barbaresco, Rizzi Riccio 2016An exclusive Barbaresco from this great estate (which came about after a tasting with their talented winemaker, Enrico) and from a great vintage. Wonderful concentration of red-apple and pepper spice, leather and black tea. Its firm tannins and bright acidity mean it will age beautifully, but it’s lovely now after a bit of time in a decanter. Drink now to 2026. 14.5%ref IB-IT29411£28 bottle | £336 dozen

Barolo Bussia, Silvano Bolmida 2010Bussia is known as one of the communes that needs time for the firm nebbiolo tannins to integrate with the wine fully, and this, from our cellar reserves, is starting to really show its potential. With a complex perfume, and still well structured there is no rush, but the inherent class of this top Barolo is now clear to see. Drink now to 2025. 14.5%ref IB-IT19051£28 bottle | £336 dozen

The Society’s Sicilian Reserve Red 2016Extremely popular and praised by members and journalists for its spot-hitting quality and value, this smooth generous and fragrant red is a cracking example of Sicily’s own nero d’Avola grape. 13.5%ref IB-IT28721£8.50 bottle | £102 dozen

Salice Salentino Riserva, Vallone 2016Generous and full of ripe sweet fruit, this comes from old bush-trained negroamaro on Vallone’s San Pancrazio vineyard in Italy’s heel. Warmhearted and delicious. 13.5%ref IB-IT29591£8.50 bottle | £102 dozen

Rosso Piceno, Saladini Pilastri 2018Made in Le Marche in the east of Italy, this blend of sangiovese with a dash of montepulciano is bursting with juicy cherry and red-berry scents, with soft tannins and a moreish, refreshing finish. Perfect with hearty Italian fare. 13%ref IB-IT28441£8.95 bottle | £107 dozen

Baccolo Appassimento Rosso Veneto 2018Now a longstanding member favourite, with a rich, spicy character achieved by partial natural air-drying of the grapes (a mix of merlot and corvina). Redcurrant and leather on the nose, with more spice developing on the palate and finish. 13.5%ref IB-IT29801£6.95 bottle | £83 dozen

The Society’s Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2018This much-loved montepulciano’s cherry and strawberry perfume leaps out of the glass, leading to a generously rounded and fruity palate. Deservedly popular and reassuringly on song in 2018. 13.5%ref IB-IT27701 p£7.50 bottle | £90 dozen

The Society’s Barbera d’Asti Superiore 2018Hot on the heels of the delicious 2017 (a Wine Champion in our blind tastings this year) and a great match with tomato dishes, this charming wine is bursting with ripe juicy fruit, mellowed for a time in large oak casks. 14.5%ref IB-IT29861 s£7.95 bottle | £95 dozen

Brindisi Rosso Vigna Flaminio, Vallone 2017A taste of Italy’s warm south, courtesy of carefully tended and naturally sweet negroamaro (80%) and malvasia nera bush vines on Vallone’s Flaminio estate in Puglia. Dark-cherry fruit meets a twist of almond-like complexity. 13%ref IB-IT29601£8.50 bottle | £102 dozen

Honest and delicious wines to conjure memories of checkered tablecloths lit by candlelight.

The Society’s Chianti 2016Fruity and soft with a perfumed smoky bouquet typical of the Rufina region, this is a delicious Chianti designed for easy pleasure and gastronomic versatility. 12.5%ref IB-IT26301£9.50 bottle | £114 dozen

Nerofino Rosso Vigneti delle Dolomiti, Castel Firmian 2017An inspired blend of two important Dolomite varieties. Teroldego gives blackberry and blueberry fruit and full-bodied structure, while lagrein adds juicy softness with hints of cocoa. Aromatic, rich and well structured, this cries out for a well-flavoured stew. 13%ref IB-IT29791£9.50 bottle | £114 dozen

Foresco Umbria, Barberani 2018This generous warm-flavoured red makes a great alternative to pricier Supertuscans. A well-judged blend of 80% sangiovese with 10% each merlot and cabernet sauvignon, made brilliantly by the delightful Barberanis. Drink now to 2024. 13.5%ref IB-IT29651£10.50 bottle | £126 dozen

The Society’s Valpolicella Ripasso 2018A ‘baby Amarone’, ripasso is made by passing new wine through barrels to which the lees of Valpolicella’s most famous red have been added, bringing extra richness and complexity. Oodles of sweet cherry and spice make it a versatile option for a wide range of tasty dishes. Drink now to 2024. 13.5%ref IB-IT29871£10.95 bottle | £131 dozen

The home of Barolo, Barbaresco and barbera… but Piedmont also has much more to offer, as I hope this selection proves.

Explore Piedmont

Barbera d’Alba Fisetta, Ciabot Berton 2018Fisetta in Piedmontese translates as fireworks and refers to the cottage on the estate which was set alight one year by, you guessed it, fireworks! Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese, Pio Cesare 2018The grignolino grape is thought to be unique to Piedmont and this is the area where it originated, in the Monferrato hills. An unusual find and in the hands of winemaker Pio Boffa, unmissable. A fresh light-bodied and elegant wine with a perfume evoking juicy strawberry and sweet raspberry, joined on the palate by refreshing acidity. Drink now to 2022. 14% Low stockref IB-IT29141£17 bottle | £204 dozen

Pinot Nero Campo Romano, Poderi Colla 2017Pietro Colla makes just one large (old) cask of this pinot noir each year from a small plot of 40-year-old vines in the Langhe.
