Mascot Election

In our exciting first month, our students were involved in an election. Each class

presented to the school their choice of what Forestview’s first mascot should be.

On Wednesday September 17, 2008 the students of Forestview went to the polls.

The students were taken through the whole voting process. They had to register to

vote and went into their voting carrels and placed their selection. On “Meet the

Teacher Night” parents were also invited into the gymnasium to place their vote as

well. After nearly 1100 votes were cast, Forestview had a team name. Forestview

will now be known as the Forestview Falcons. Students should be commended for

their creative efforts and talents! Below is a press release from the DSBN

Communication Department about our election.

With their keen eyesight, sharp beaks and long, powerful wings, Falcons are one of themost impressive birds in the skies. Now, the Falcon also represents the DSBN's newestschool, filled with students with sharp minds, keen on learning.

On Thursday, September 18, Forestview Public School students let out a cheer thatrattled the foundations of the school after Vice-Principal Derek Harley announced thatForestview would now be known as the Falcons.

The announcement followed a full-day of voting in which students and parents had todecide between a number of interesting and creative ideas authored by each class.“This was not an easy decision for our students,” said Derek Harley, Vice Principal. “Wehad so many well thought out and designed ideas; everything from the ForestviewFrogs to the Phoenix.”

Grade 5 student Robert B. said the school’s new identity will be a real source of pridefor all students at Forestview. “Falcons are fierce predators, and usually they can’t bebeat,” said Robert B.

“We’re very proud of our students who are so engaged in their school community,” saysTodd Bright, Principal. “Having students design and decide the future look of our schoolrecognizes the creativity, talent and abilities of the young people we serve here atForestview.”

A Safety Reminder....

Safety of children is a priority for all school communities. Our school participates

in several activities and programs to assist in creating safe environments for our

children to learn, to develop and to grow. Although these activities assist in

making the school environment as safe as possible, the school community is not

always risk-free. It is EVERYONE’S RESPONSIBILITY TO TEACH

SAFETY PRACTICES TO OUR CHILDREN. Parents share this responsibility

with teachers and other community agencies.

Working together and sharing information, we can create safe environments and

safe practices to benefit our children.

Allow us to thank you in advance for taking the time to go over the following

Niagara Regional Police Streetproofing Tips. The staff have already discussed this

with our students. Please take this opportunity to reinforce the wrok we have done

at school.

Streetproofing Tips for Children

TEACH your child according to their age:

• To tell you where they will be at all times

• Never to approach or enter a stranger’s car.

• Not to enter anyone’s home without their permission.

• Not to accept gifts from strangers.

• That adults rarely ask a child for help.

• Never to play in deserted buildings or isolated areas.

• Never to take short cuts through empty parks or fields.

• To go places with friends.

• That if they are being followed, they should run home or go to the nearest

public place and yell for help.

• About the Block Parent Program and Logo.

• That they have your permission to say “no” to an adult, especially if that

person wants them to do something you’ve taught them is wrong.

• That no one has the right to touch any part of their body that a bathing

suit would cover.

• To tell you if someone has asked them to keep a secret from you.
