TRANSCRIPT
National Careers Week is an initiative of the Career Industry Council of Australia and aims to celebrate careers, career development, career development services, and career development practitioners and to promote the economic, social and personal benefits of career development.
Career development is a process of managing learning, work and leisure to progress through life. It includes gaining and using the skills and knowledge needed to plan and make informed decisions about education, training, and work. Everyday decisions and priorities affect career development. Ultimately, career development is about much more than jobs – it is about how to live your life.
The objectives of National Careers Week are to:
• Develop community awareness of the concept, benefit, and value of career development.
• Raise aspirations, challenge stereotypes, and broaden horizons about careers.
• Highlight the need for ongoing reskilling and upskilling to support careers throughout life.
• Identify the changing nature of work and its impact on all Australians.
• Showcase industries and the career opportunities available in them.
• Provide opportunities to partner with key stakeholders.
Please see the pages following with an activity timetable which includes webinars, live streams, university information sessions and so much more. Each event is a linked directly to an event or the registration page for the event.
You will also see after the timetable a description of each event, JobJump information and more future careers events!
If you have any questions please contact Belinda Standage, Careers Adviser, at the school.

Your career in Space... right here, right now
Have you ever thought about a career in Space? Tim and Julia want to take you on a trek… to places that you may not have imagined.
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to explore possible careers in Space.
When you hear the word “space”, you are probably imagining astronauts and living on the International Space Station, and soon,
travelling to the Moon and Mars. Yes! And for every astronaut and every space mission, there are thousands of jobs needed to be
done right here on Earth too in one of the world’s fastest-growing high-tech industries: space.
And in Australia, the space industry is starting to grow fast. The demand for people with STEAM skills, including researchers,
engineers (aerospace, electronics, mechanical and computer), data analysts and astronomers, as well as communicators, project
managers and even salespeople are - post COVID-19 - set to increase dramatically.
Please join Dr Tim Parsons and Julia Mitchell as they share with you some of the emerging career opportunities, and the kind of skills,
and areas of study to pursue, and even projects to join if you think this might be the career for you.
Organisation Profile
The Space Industry Association of Australia (SIAA) is a nationwide organisation formed to promote the growth of the Australian space
sector. By formulating national policies and strategies, SIAA speaks with authority and credibility on behalf of its members to
accelerate the growth of the Australian space industry.

Early Childhood Teaching Careers with Future Tracks
Across Australia, the demand for bachelor qualified early childhood teachers (ECTs) is growing. Over the next five years, an
additional 29,000 ECTs will be needed to meet the increased demand.
This demand is being driven by governments and families who are recognising the importance of professional early childhood
teachers. We are seeing a swell of support for more roles, in more communities all across Australia.
For students, there has never been a better time to pursue a degree in early childhood teaching. Not only is early childhood
teaching a rewarding career where you can make an impact, it also opens up a range of opportunities in roles such
as teaching, managing a small business, developing government policy and everything in between.
Join Future Tracks for a webinar on the Future of Early Childhood Education.
The webinar will explore early childhood teaching as a career pathway, shedding light on the opportunities available
to students while studying at university and beyond.
We’ll also discuss the unique benefits and advantages offered by Future Tracks designed to supercharge their early childhood
teaching careers, including:
Paid work while you complete your degree
Access to an experienced early childhood mentor
Leadership development.
In a time of uncertainty, early childhood teaching is a future proof career path for students who want a job with flexibility, creativity
a chance to make a real impact by shaping the next generation of thinkers and leaders.
Future Tracks is a new social enterprise designed to attract and support the next generation of early childhood teachers. Our
innovative program brings together university experts, experienced leaders in the early childhood sector, and students studying
undergraduate degrees in early childhood teaching.

Dr Tim Kitchen, Adobe
‘Skills to Thrive in the Future’
To be competitive in the current and future world of work, it is important to develop a range of what are commonly
referred to as ‘soft skills’ and ‘hard skills’. Most education systems are good at encouraging students to develop hard
skills because they are easy to measure and test. In many cases this is at the detriment of so called ‘soft skills’ that are
hard to measure yet so important in the workplace of today and tomorrow, especially in the light of all the COVID-19
disruptions. Both LinkedIn/Microsoft and the World Economic Forum have released some interesting research that rates
the most important skills required to thrive in the future and they are anything but ‘soft’. During this presentation, Dr
Tim Kitchen from Adobe will share his thoughts on this topic following his nearly 30 years as an educator and currently as
Adobe’s Senior Education specialist for Asia Pacific

Beyond school: Do you know where your
students need to go?
For many students, navigating a post-school pathway can be an overwhelming task. We have resources to help people:
• compare and decide on a course
• access an Australian Government loan, such as HECS-HELP
• find out what financial assistance is available.
We’ll chat about the Australian Government products and services available to help equip students as they begin their tertiary
pathway.
We want students to be empowered to make the right decisions.
We’ll share products and tools developed by the Department of Education, Skills and Employment (DESE), the Australian Taxation
Office (ATO) and Services Australia.
These include DESE’s Beyond School Study Guide and Course Seeker, ComparED and Study Assist websites. We’ll also talk about
Services Australia’s Payment and Service Finder and School Leavers Resource Kit.

Why Career Adaptability is important for
Athletes
An athletic career is characterized by different phases and
transitions that demand relevant decision-making
strategies to enable the athlete to successfully continue
with sport and education/work.
Especially the junior-to-senior-transition and the
transition out of elite sport are known to be crucial
turning phases for athletes. These periods are often
characterized by uncertainty, psychological distress, and a
potential loss of identity.
To constantly adapt to new circumstances in relation to
their athletic and educational/vocational career, athletes
need relevant coping resources to overcome the specific
demands each transition encompasses.
Furthermore, athletes are part of a wider environment
that involves different key persons such as parents,
coaches, teachers, and friends. These persons can play a
significant role in supporting the development of the
athlete’s career adaptability throughout their career.
In Andreas’ presentation, he will use the Holistic Athletic
Career Model (which highlights that athletes develop in
the sporting, psychological, psychosocial, and academic
domain) and provide some examples of his own dual
career development in connection with Savickas (2013)
framework of career adaptability.
Focusing on the critical transition phases, he will provide
different suggestions of how athletes and career
counsellors can work with the career adaptability
dimensions (i.e., concern, control, curiosity, confidence)
that can enable athletes to be successful in sport and life
beyond.
