    A.I. (Airborne Internet);

    The Airborne Internet is a proposed network in which all nodes would be located in aircraft. Thenetwork is intended for use in aviation communications, navigation, and surveillance (CNS) and would alsobe useful to businesses, private Internet users, and government agencies, especially the military. In time ofwar, for example, an airborne network might enable military planes to operate without the need for acommunications infrastructure on the ground. Such a network could also allow civilian planes tocontinually monitor each other's positions and flight paths.

    At least three different methods have been proposed for putting communication nodes aloft. The firstmethod would employ manned aircraft, the second method would use unmanned aircraft, and the thirdmethod would use blimps. The nodes would provide air-to-air, surface-to-air, and surface-to-surfacecommunications. The aircraft or blimps would fly at altitudes of around 10 mi (16 km), and would coverregions of about 40 mi (64 mi) in radius. Data transfer rates would be on the order of several megabits persecond, comparable to those of high-speed cable modem connections. Network users could communicatedirectly with other users, and indirectly with conventional Internet users through surface-based nodes. Likethe Internet, the Airborne Network would use TCP/IP as the set of protocols for specifying networkaddresses and ensuring message packets arrive.

    The concept of the Airborne Internet was first proposed at NASA Langley Research Center's Small AircraftTransportation System (SATS) Planning Conference in 1999. The goal of the SATS initiative isimplementation of small aircraft for public transportation. In one conference session, it was suggested thatsuch a system would require a peer-to-peer communciations network among the aircraft. The AirborneInternet Consortium formed subsequently to promote and aid in the development of such a system.Consortion members include Aerosat, C3D Aero, and United Airlines.

    A+;A-Plus (A+) is the name of a process, developed by the Computing Technology Industry Association

    (CompTIA), a large trade group, that certifies individuals for knowledge about and competency ininstalling, maintaining, customizing, and operating personal computers. The examination is in two parts,the first covering computer hardware and software in general and the second covering a specific operatingsystem, such as Windows 98. The exam is administered by Drake Parametric and there is a fee. A number

    of companies provide in-house or self-taught preparation for the exam.CompTIA also sponsors specialized certification for document imaging and a network certification exam.The A-Plus certification is somewhat more basic and less product-specific than other certifications, such asMicrosoft's Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer certifications.

    An advantage of certification in any industry is that it promotes self-regulation rather than governmentregulation.

    AA (auto answer)The modem is ready to respond to an incoming call (assuming a communication program is also ready

    to handle the call). Since this light can be off even when the modem is ready, it's not useful.

    AAA(authentication, authorization, and accounting)A term for a framework for intelligently controlling access to computer resources, enforcing policies,

    auditing usage, and providing the information necessary to bill for services. These combined processes areconsidered important for effective network management and security.As the first process, authentication provides a way of identifying a user, typically by having the user enter avalid user name and valid password before access is granted. The process of authentication is based on eachuser having a unique set of criteria for gaining access. The AAA server compares a user's authenticationcredentials with other user credentials stored in a database. If the credentials match, the user is grantedaccess to the network. If the credentials are at variance, authentication fails and network access is denied.

    Following authentication, a user must gain authorization for doing certain tasks. After logging into asystem, for instance, the user may try to issue commands. The authorization process determines whetherthe user has the authority to issue such commands. Simply put, authorization is the process of enforcingpolicies: determining what types or qualities of activities, resources, or services a user is permitted. Usually,authorization occurs within the context of authentication. Once you have authenticated a user, they may beauthorized for different types of access or activity.

    The final plank in the AAA framework is accounting, which measures the resources a user consumes duringaccess. This can include the amount of system time or the amount of data a user has sent and/or receivedduring a session. Accounting is carried out by logging of session statistics and usage information and isused for authorization control, billing, trend analysis, resource utilization, and capacity planning activities.

    Authentication, authorization, and accounting services are often provided by a dedicated AAA server, aprogram that performs these functions. A current standard by which network access servers interface withthe AAA server is the Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS).

    AAA ServerA server program that handles user requests for access to computer resources and, for an enterprise,

    provides authentication, authorization, and accounting (AAA) services. The AAA server typically interactswith network access and gateway servers and with databases and directories containing user information.The current standard by which devices or applications communicate with an AAA server is the RemoteAuthentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS).Also see authentication, authorization, and accounting.
