A- Rules developmentA1 Introduction of new methods

Discussion is open among MOI members to change ISTA rule n° 9.1.5.2 (and 9.1.5.5):

Proposal: also for large seeds (as tree seeds) 2 working samples each of 5 gr

MOI cutting working group

Scope 1: to verify if cutting is compulsory for the seeds of Pinus genus when the TSW is > 200 g.

Scope 2: to verify if it is possible to test 2 working samples of 5 g (or 10 g) of seeds instead of 5 seeds x 2 replicates.

Seed germination of Phillyrea angustifolia

• Phillyrea angustifolia

• Oleaceae, related to Ligustrum and Olea

• A representative evergreen Mediterranean shrub

• Distribution: Northern Africa and South of Europe

• Economic importance: ornamental

• Fruit: black-blue drupe with lignified endocarp

• Seed oil content: 21%

CONCLUSIONS:

• Germination needs the complete removal of the endocarp

• Germination is higher at 15-20ºC

• Seed germinations is faster at 15ºC

• Water imbibition for 72h increases the speed of germination

• Cold stratification has a negative effect on seed germination

• Plant growth in greenhouse is very slow

21-25 MAY 2012, MILKOW, POLANDKostrzyca Forest Genebank

Page 37: ISTA Forest Tree and Shrub Seed Committee 2010 - 2011

WORKSHOPMiłków, Poland

The aims of the workshop were to provide information on:

- the use of Polish forestry practices and treatment of seed material, - dissemination of actions, to encourage workshop participants to include set standards for work procedures used in their business units,- creating the possibility of an international exchange of experience

Page 38: ISTA Forest Tree and Shrub Seed Committee 2010 - 2011

WORKSHOPMiłków, Poland

Page 39: ISTA Forest Tree and Shrub Seed Committee 2010 - 2011

The main goals of the workshop

1. Report from the FAO Forest Genetic Resources Working Group - the status of forests / forest conservation in Europe.

2. Collection of seeds of forest trees and shrubs, herbaceous plants and crops - a comparison of accepted standards.

3. Seed quality testing and methods of storage:storage methods (length and conditions) depending on the category of seeds (orthodox, suborthodox, recalcitrant).Creation of seed samples.

4. Stratification and other dormancy breaking methods: stratification in the substrate and without substrate; length and conditions of stratification; other dormancy breaking methods

WORKSHOPMiłków, Poland

Page 40: ISTA Forest Tree and Shrub Seed Committee 2010 - 2011

The main conclusions of the workshop

1.Workshop participants exchanged their knowledge and their experience in topics related to collection, evaluation and storage of herbaceous plants, crops and forest seeds. 2.Emphasized the need to organize the next workshop in another seed bank.3.Emphasized the necessity of extend educational activities for private forest owners relating to the purchase, handling and planting of recommended forest reproductive material in the context of ongoing climate changes
