• The questions are:1. Is there anyone who is

experienced with Jatropha?2. Is there anyone who is

interested in it?

JatrophaJatropha curcascurcas L.L.(Barbados (Barbados nutnut or or PhysicPhysic nutnut))

Jatropha curcas, is a perennial poisonousshrub (normally up to 5m high) belonging to the Euphorbiaceae.

It is an uncultivated non-food wild-species.

• The plant, originating in Central America, whereas it has been spread to other tropical and subtropical countries as well and is mainlygrown in Asia and in Africa.

• It is used as a living fence to protect gardensand fields from animals. It is resistant to a high degree of aridity and as such does not compete with food crops.

• The seeds contain 30% oil that can be processed toproduce a high-quality biodiesel fuel, usable in a standard diesel engine.

• Fruits : fruits are produced in winter, or it may produce severalcrops during the year if soil moisture is good and temperatures are sufficiently high.

• Seeds: the seeds become mature, when the capsule changesfrom green to yellow

• It is usually multiplied by cuttings, because this gives fasterresults than multiplication by seeds.

Fruits and Seeds

• If planted in hedges, the reported productivity of Jatropha is from 0.8 kg. to 1.0 kg. of seed per meter of live fence. The seed production isaround 3.5 tons / hectare (Seed production ranges from about 0.4 tons per hectare in first year to over 5 tons per hectare after 3 years).

Jatropha curcas have limitednatural regeneration and artificially propagated by meansof seed. It is a cross-pollinatedand propagation through seed

lead to lot of genetic variability in term of growth, biomass, seed yield and oil content. Besides, the problems of low viability and recalcitrant nature of oil seeds limits the sexual propagation. On the other hand, Clonal techniques will help in overcoming the biological problems in hinderingmass propagation of this Tree BorneOilseed species.
