I do hope that all of you had a wonderful short break last week and it was delightful to welcome our students back to school this week. We now have a busy 7 week run towards the end of Term 3 and the end of our second year as an increasingly successful school. For some of our Year 10 and Year 12 students, the short break was a

period of preparation for the various IGCSE examinations that they are now undertaking. I am sure that they have prepared well in order to succeed in these signi�cant assessments. However, important as these tests are, we must not lose sight of the fact that our school is concerned with much more than just preparing for examinations. Over the last few weeks we have seen Years 4 and 5 going on their residential trips and having a wonderful time with many experiencing living away from their families for the �rst time. All our teachers remarked about how sensible and well behaved our students were on these residentials.

As I reported in the last newsletter, I joined a group of Year 10 students on the DoE Bronze assessed walk just before the holiday and they were a real credit to the school. �ey walked for 8 hours in extremely hot temperatures on the �rst day and followed that with almost 5 hours in pouring rain on the second day. I congratulate them all and the sta� who accompanied them for real BVIS perseverance!

Tôi tin chắc rằng các Quý vị đã có một kỳ nghỉ ngắn thú vị vào tuần trước và tôi rất vui được chào đón các em học sinh quay trở lại Trường vào tuần này. Từ đây chúng ta có 7 tuần bận rộn hướng tới cuối Học kỳ 3 và kết thúc năm học thứ hai của một ngôi trường đang ngày một phát triển hơn nữa. Đối với một số em học sinh khối Lớp 10 và Lớp 12, kỳ nghỉ ngắn ngày vừa qua là quãng thời gian ôn tập cho kỳ thi IGCSE diễn ra trong tuần này. Tôi tin rằng các em đã có sự chuẩn bị tốt để những bài kiểm tra quan trọng này đạt kết quả tốt. Tuy nhiên, một điều không kém phần quan trọng, đó là chúng ta không được quên rằng nhà trường quan tâm đến nhiều khía cạnh chứ không chỉ dừng lại ở việc chuẩn bị cho những kỳ thi. Trong một vài tuần qua, chúng ta đã thấy các em học sinh khối Lớp 4 và Lớp 5 được đi dã ngoại và các em đã có khoảng thời gian tuyệt vời với rất nhiều trải nghiệm sống xa gia đình lần đầu tiên. Tất cả các thầy cô giáo đều nhận thấy rằng các em học sinh đã nhận thức và cư xử rất tốt trong những chuyến đi này

�is week I also witnessed a wonderful game of Volleyball between ourselves and our sister school Royal City. In a fantastically exciting and competitive game we just scraped a win at the end. But the real winners were the two teams who competed so well and with such spirit.

�erefore, school is not just about examinations and, interestingly, there is a report in this week’s Guardian newspaper from the UK regarding the use and structure of the annual PISA tests. �ese are tests which many countries use to measure themselves academically against each other. �e newspaper report focuses on a letter written by 120 academics from around the world which criticises the use of the tests. One signatory, Stephen Ball, Professor at London University's Institute of Education claims that “Education policy across the world is being driven by the single aim of pushing up national performance levels on PISA - it's having a tremendously distorting e�ect, right down to the level of classroom teaching."

At our school, examinations and academic achievement are very important but the development of the ‘’whole child’’ is even more important.

Như đã nhắc đến trong số Tuần báo của tuần trước, tôi tham gia cùng các em học sinh khối Lớp 10 trong chuyến đi bộ của chương trình Giải thưởng Quốc tế Công tước xứ Edinburgh - Giải Đồng ngay trước kỳ nghỉ lễ và các em thực sự là niềm tự hào của Trường. Các em đã đi bộ 8 tiếng đồng hồ dưới trời nắng nóng trong ngày đầu tiên và tiếp theo đó là gần 5 tiếng dưới cơn mưa tầm tã trong ngày đi bộ thứ hai. Tôi xin chúc mừng tất cả các em học sinh cùng những thầy cô giáo đã đi kèm các em trong chuyến đi vì đã thể hiện được sự bền chí thực thụ của BVIS!

Do vậy, trường học không chỉ là những kỳ thi, và thật thú vị, một báo cáo đăng trên báo Guardian của Anh Quốc tuần này về việc sử dụng và kết cấu của những bài kiểm tra PISA hàng năm. Đây là những bài kiểm tra mà nhiều quốc gia dùng để tự đánh giá lẫn nhau về học thuật. Bài báo cáo đó tập trung và một bức thư được viết bởi 120 nhà học thuật trên khắp thế giới, trong đó họ chỉ trích việc sử dụng những bài kiểm tra này. Một học giả có tên Stephen Ball, Giáo sư Viện Giáo dục của Trường Đại học Luân-đôn cho rằng “Chính sách giáo dục trên thế giới đang bị tác động bởi mục đích duy nhất là nhằm nâng cao kết quả trong bài kiểm tra PISA – nó đang đem đến tác động vô cùng méo mó đối với việc giảng dạy trên lớp”.

Tuần này tôi cũng đã được chứng kiến một trận đấu bóng chuyền tuyệt vời giữa đội của Trường chúng ta với Trường cùng hệ thống – Trường BVIS Royal City. Trong một trận đấu đầy sự thú vị và tính cạnh tranh, chúng ta đã dành được chiến thắng chung cuộc vào cuối trận. Nhưng những người chiến thắng thực thụ chính là hai đội chơi, những người đã thi đấu rất tốt với tinh thần thể thao cao độ.

Bobby and Phi Long, our Year 8 students, and I ran the Early Years and Key Stage 1 assembly this morning. While I read the story of the Mixed up Chameleon, Bobby and Long showed our very youngest students the exciting world of colour changing chemicals. I have always valued working at a school that o�ers education to the full age range (as opposed to separate

Primary and Secondary schools) as it enables sta� and students to appreciate learning at all stages and the impact this has upon their own teaching and learning. �e F1 children at our assembly will graduate in 2029. For me the joy and challenge of education is that we must give them the skills to cope with whatever the world looks like in 15 years.

Being a ‘through school’ also helps our Year 6 students who will have a much easier start in Secondary in August because they already spend part of their week using our specialist science laboratories and our Year 6 and 7 team work closely to ensure we know the students from Day 1.

Year 12 and our accelerated Year 10 students sat their �rst written IGCSE examinations this week. �e whole school community has been supportive of these pioneer students in their quietness around the exam areas for which I know they are very grateful.

Tôi cùng hai em học sinh lớp 8 là Phi Long và Bobby đã cùng dẫn dắt buổi Sinh hoạt tập thể sáng nay của Khối Mầm non và Khối KS1. Trong khi tôi đọc câu chuyện ‘�e Mixed up Chameleon’ (Tắc kè hoa lúng túng), Bobby đã cho các em học sinh bé nhất của trường thấy được sự thay đổi màu sắc rất thú vị của các chất hóa học. Tôi luôn đánh giá cao việc công tác và học tập tại các trường dạy đầy đủ các lứa tuổi (không giống những trường Tiểu Học và Trung Học riêng biệt) vì nó cho phép giáo viên và học sinh coi trọng việc học ở tất cả các giai đoạn cùng với những ảnh hưởng tốt lên chính việc dạy và học. Các em học sinh lớp F1 trong buổi Sinh hoạt này sẽ tốt nghiệp vào năm 2019. Đối với tôi, niềm vui và cũng là một thách thức của việc giảng dạy đó là chúng ta phải cung cấp cho các em những kĩ năng cần thiết để đương đầu với thế giới dù cho thế giới ấy có như thế nào trong vòng 15 năm tới.

Việc là một trường “đa cấp” cũng giúp cho các em học sinh lớp 6 có khởi đầu dễ dàng hơn ở khối Trung Học vào tháng 8 vì hàng tuần các em đã được làm quen với các phòng thí nghiệm khoa học và việc kết hợp chặt chẽ giữa Khối 6 và khối 7 đảm bảo rằng chúng tôi hiểu rõ các em học sinh ngay từ ngày đầu tiên.

Khối 12 và nhóm lớp 10 nâng cao đã làm những bài thi viết IGCSE đầu tiên vào tuần vừa qua. Toàn bộ học sinh và nhân viên trong trường đều hỗ trợ bằng việc giữ trật tự quanh khu vực làm bài thi, tôi biết các em sẽ rất biết ơn vì điều này.

I do hope that you had an enjoyable holiday to celebrate labour day and reuni�cation day last weekend. During the break, my husband and I travelled to Sapa. �is was our �rst time there and we enjoyed it immensly. �e whole area is breathtakingly beautiful, with magni�cent views everywhere you look. We enjoyed some gentle walks through

the countryside, taking in the vistas of terraced rice paddies and other crops, with people hard at work tending their �elds. Many were busy working the land with water bu�alo pulling ploughs in the same way that they have for hundreds of years.

We visited some villages where ethnic tribes’ people still dress in traditional costumes as a matter of course, not to attract the tourists. Men, women and young children wear the same clothes that their ancestors did and look justi�ably proud in them. �ey also still focus on producing traditional cra�s, most notably hand embroidered fabrics, as they have for generations.

All of this really reinforced in my mind how very important it is that, as a school, we continue to focus on ensuring that children learn about and understand the di�erent landscapes, cultures and traditions of this wonderful country, Vietnam. It is so easy in this modern day to lose sight of a country’s history and heritage, but it is vital, for the sake of our children’s future, that we do not. As we continue with our preparations for the change to BIS for August, this will still be a very key feature of our school’s mission.

Tôi hy vọng rằng Quý vị đã có một kỳ nghỉ cuối tuần dài thú vị kỷ niệm Ngày Giải phóng miền Nam thống nhất đất nước và Ngày Quốc tế lao động cuối tuần trước. Trong kỳ nghỉ, hai vợ chồng tôi đi du lịch Sapa. Đây là lần đầu tiên chúng tôi đến đây và chúng tôi rất thích. Không những toàn bộ khung cảnh đẹp ngoạn mục mà còn đẹp từ mọi góc nhìn. Chúng tôi thấy thích thú được thong thả đi bộ ra vùng thôn dã, ngắm ruộng bậc thang và các loại hoa màu khác, với những con người chăm chỉ chăm sóc cho những thửa ruộng của mình. Nhiều người kéo trâu đi cày giống như cách họ vẫn làm cách đây hàng trăm năm.

Chúng tôi thăm một số ngôi làng nơi những người dân tộc vẫn mặc váy truyền thống theo thói quen, chứ không phải để thu hút khách du lịch. Đàn ông, phụ nữ và trẻ em đều mặc trang phục giống như tổ tiên của họ và rất tự hào khi mặc chúng. Họ vẫn tập trung làm thủ công truyền thống, đáng chú ý nhất là các loại vải thêu, vì đó là nghề được truyền qua nhiều thế hệ .

Điều đó thực sự làm cho tôi càng thêm tin tưởng tầm quan trọng của việc trường chúng ta tập trung dạy các em học sinh về những cảnh quan, nền văn hóa và truyền thống khác nhau của đất nước tuyệt vời này, đất nước Việt Nam. Trong xã hội hiện đại, lịch sử và di sản của một đất nước rất dễ bị sao nhãng, nhưng vì thế hệ tương lai, chúng ta không được phép làm điều đó. Chúng tôi vẫn tiếp tục các bước chuẩn bị để trở thành Trường Quốc tế BIS vào tháng Tám, nhưng đây vẫn là một điều quan trọng trong sứ mệnh của trường .

‘Of all of our inventions for mass communication, pictures still speak the most universally understood language.’ - Walt Disney

Communication, in any form, plays a huge role within our school community and the wider world. In Year 2, children are �nding out about ‘Communication’. �ey are

learning to become globally aware of similarities and di�erences between themselves and others; between their environment and that of others and to understand that there is a world out there that they can access and be a part of, by using a variety of methods of communication. In order to promote discussion and understanding at this age images and real life experiences are vital to help children communicate feelings, thoughts and ideas and build on these with their friends. Being ‘Visually Literate’ and then being able to build on this using verbal and written communication will create opportunities for children to progress and face challenges with con�dence.

In English lessons, children have been writing letters to potential new friends in an English Primary school in Greater Manchester. �e children have written short statements to communicate their interests to the British children. Although living thousands of miles apart, there will be many similarities between the children and their personal experiences, as well as many di�erences. Encouraging them to explore these at such a young age will enable children to gain a deeper understanding of their own culture as well as that of others. In Vietnamese lessons, children have been writing letters to their parents. When �nished, the children will visit the Post O�ce at Hoan Kiem, to post their letter in the correct mail box - Domestic or International.

�e children have also had opportunities to experience di�erent forms of communication including: email, using ‘walky talkies,’ and telephone.

Liên lạc, theo bất kỳ hình thức nào, đóng vai trò rất lớn trong cộng đồng nhà trường và trong các môi trường rộng lớn hơn. Ở khối Lớp 2, các em được học về ‘Liên lạc’. Các em đang học để hiểu về các điểm giống và khác nhau giữa bản thân và những người khác; giữa môi trường của mình và môi trường của những người khác trên phạm vi toàn cầu và hiểu rằng có một thế giới bên ngoài kia mà các em có thể tiếp cận và trở thành một phần của thế giới đó bằng cách sử dụng các phương tiện liên lạc khác nhau. Nhằm thúc đẩy thảo luận và hiểu biết ở lứa tuổi này, hình ảnh và kinh nghiệm thực tế cuộc sống là rất quan trọng để giúp các em trao đổi cảm xúc, suy nghĩ, ý tưởng và tiếp tục phát triển những điều này hơn nữa với các bạn của mình. ‘Hiểu hình ảnh’ và xây dựng nền tảng cho phần kiến thức này bằng cách sử dụng phương thức liên lạc bằng lời nói hoặc ngôn ngữ viết sẽ tạo cơ hội để các em tiến bộ và tự tin đối mặt với thách thức.

Trong các tiết Tiếng Anh, các em được viết những bức thư cho những người bạn mới ở Trường Tiểu học của Anh ở Greater Manchester. Các em đã viết những câu ngắn gọn để thể hiện sự quan tâm của mình với các bạn học sinh ở Anh. Mặc dù sống cách xa nhau hàng ngàn dặm, giữa các em vẫn có nhiều điểm giống nhau và những điểm trải nghiệm tương đồng, cũng như nhiều điểm khác biệt. Khuyến khích các em khám phá những điều này từ khi còn nhỏ sẽ giúp các em hiểu sâu hơn về nền văn hóa của mình cũng như những nền văn hóa khác. Trong các tiết Tiếng Việt, các em học sinh viết những bức thư gửi đến bố mẹ. Khi hoàn thành, các em sẽ đi tham quan Bưu điện Hoàn Kiếm rồi gửi bức thư của mình vào đúng hộp thư – trong nước hoặc quốc tế.

Các em cũng đã có cơ hội được trải nghiệm các hình thức liên lạc khác nhau bao gồm: sử dụng thư điện tử, bộ đàm và điện thoại.
