UK’s NO.1 PROPERTYBUYER OVER 4,500 HOUSES BOUGHT The return to service of a historic Darlington steam locomotive will be celebrated at Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon on Friday, 18th June, after a four-year restoration project by the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group. The celebration day will be attended by the group’s working members, honoured guests, and ex-British Railways footplate men who fired and drove steam engines until the full dieselisation of the railways in 1967. A 97-year- young veteran steam driver, Albert Hawman, will be guest of honour on the day. The restoration project, led by volunteers based at Hopetown, Darlington has, through some 10,000 hours of volunteer time and £150,000 of expenditure, enabled the locomotive to steam once again, and will be used to promote the North East’s proud steam and railway heritage. The North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group also acknowledges the support from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) whose grant of £50,000 has greatly assisted the restoration project. John Hunt, Chairman of the NELPG, said, "It is a proud day for the Group to welcome back this Victorian-designed engine, and I pay tribute to the long hours spent by the Group’s volunteers to bring the locomotive back to life. We look forward to running the locomotive at museums and heritage railways for the public to enjoy and experience the sounds, smells and travel of the steam age". Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund in the North East, Ivor Crowther, said, "This steam locomotive is a great example of the rich steam and railway heritage of the North East, and we at the Heritage Lottery Fund are pleased that it is back where it belongs and in excellent condition. A huge amount of time and hard work has gone into restoring this engine, and we are proud to have supported the volunteers and the team who have made this project a success". The engine has been completed in an apple green livery with railway crests once carried by sister locomotive which worked as station pilots at Newcastle and York stations during the 1950s and early 1960s. The engine is currently working as Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon’s resident operating engine during summer 2010, providing train rides and driver experience days at the museum. LOCOMOTION TO HOST CELEBRATION OF "RETURN TO STEAM" No. 69023 at the historic coal drops at Locomotion. ARTS, CRAFTS & PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION Shildon Town Council is pleased to announce that judging has taken place in the Arts, Crafts and Photography Competition which this year had a record number of entries. An Exhibition of all the entries will be held at the Shildon Civic Hall on Monday, 21st June from 1.00pm to 4.00pm and from 6pm to 9pm and Tuesday, 22nd June from 9.00am to 12noon. "Admission to the exhibition is free of charge, so please come along", said a spokesperson. SALVATION ARMY SUMMER FAYRE The Salvation Army is to hold its Summer Fayre at Cross Street from 2.00pm on Saturday, 26th June. The fayre will include stalls selling gifts, books, toys, clothes, cakes, toiletries, handicrafts and more. Refreshments will also be available throughout. Admission to the fayre is 20p, children enter free of charge. RESOURCES COMMITTEE Shildon Town Council's Resources Committee considered four applications for grant aid under Section 137 of the Local Government Act 1972. The Every Other Tuesday group requested grant aid of £50, as did Shildon Library. Victim Support and Shildon Railway Cricket Club both asked for £25 in grant aid. All requests were agreed upon by the Resources Committee.

CONSERVATION AREA CONSULTATION

If you live or work in or near the Shildon Conservation Area, then Durham County Council wants you to have your say.Durham County Council has commissioned a Character Appraisal for the Shildon Conservation Area, which lies to the south east of the town centre, around the old Soho Works. The Character Appraisal makes a number of recommendations to help retain and enhance the historic

character of this important site. What would you like to see happen next? You can download the appraisal from the internet at http:www.aenvironment.co.uk/ then pop along to our consultation event on Friday, 25th June, from 3.30pm till 6.00pm at the Welcome Centre (end of Soho Street, Shildon), or send your comments to [email protected] or phone 0191 3750943.

Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon will welcome vintage and classic tractors and stationary engines of all descriptions to the Vintage & Classic Tractor Rally on Sunday, 11th July. There will be a range of vehicles on display, including two David Brown Cropmasters from 1949 and a 1958 Fordson Power Major. The event will also include a display of model steam engines inside the museum’s Collection Building, and younger visitors will have the chance to win some great prizes in the free, tractor-themed colouring competition! If you own a classic or vintage tractor or stationary engine, there’s still time to get involved. The event is open to agricultural and construction machinery of all descriptions – from small stationary

engines traditionally used to drive hand tools; to larger ploughing engines, traction engines, and traditional tractors!Sharon Thorburn, the museum’s Front of House Officer, said, “Locomotion celebrates the region’s railway heritage, and our collection includes an impressive display of locomotives. But some of the technology used in steam locomotives was also used by stationary engines and the earliest tractors. We hope that our Vintage Tractors Rally gives visitors the chance to learn more about these powerful machines.”If you would like to register your vehicle for the event, or if you’d like more information, contact Pam Porter, Events Officer, by telephone on 01388 771445 or by emailing [email protected].

VINTAGE & CLASSIC TRACTOR RALLY

RAPE & ASSAULT CHARGES

Peter David Duce appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court to face a charge that on or about 15th March, in Shildon, he committed an act of rape, contrary to the Sexual Offences Act 2003. A second charge of common assault, against the same victim, was alleged to have occurred on 19th April.

The 55 year old, from Cooperative Street in Shildon, will now appear at Durham Crown Court on 17th June for a preliminary hearing, when he is likely to plead not guilty. Duce was released on bail, conditions of which state that he must have no contact with his alleged victim, nor go within 100 metres of her.

Visit Locomotion: The National Railway Museum at Shildon on Saturday 19th June and Sunday 20th June for Cab It! – your chance to get on board some very special vehicles in the museum’s collection. At the Cab It! event, visitors will be able to get on the footplates of DP1, the prototype Deltic; North Eastern Railway No. 1; and LNWR No. 3020 Cornwall. A knowledgeable team of museum staff and volunteers will be on hand to give you an insight into the life of an engine driver, and answer any questions you might have on these historic vehicles. The iconic prototype Deltic was built as a demonstrator locomotive built by English Electric in 1955. This locomotive resulted in 22 similar locomotives being ordered by British Rail, which became their Class 55.North Eastern Railway No. 1 was built in Gateshead in 1905. It was built to work on the railway line from the

Tyne quays to Newcastle upon Tyne’s mainline. This route was steep (an average of 1:27), curved and mostly in tunnel – the cab of a steam locomotive working this line would often fill with smoke, making it unpleasant and dangerous for crews. The solution to this was to make the line an electric-worked railway.LNWR No. 3020 Cornwall was designed by Francis

Trevithick, son of Richard Trevithick, and built at Crewe in 1847. A famously successful high-speed passenger express engine, there are reports of a run in 1884 from Crewe to Chester at an average speed of 50.7mph, reaching 70 mph down Whitmore bank. The locomotive remained in express service on the Liverpool-Manchester route until being withdrawn in 1902.

CAB IT AT LOCOMOTION

Visitors will be able to access the cab of the prototype Deltic at Locomotion’s Cab It! event.

The Churches Together "Songs of Priase" was held in the Methodist Church, due to inclement weather, and was well attended.Music for the event was provided by the Shildon

SONGS OF PRAISENEW ENFORCEMENT APPROACH

FOR SOCIAL HOUSINGDurham County Council is set to launch a new enforcement policy aimed at raising standards in private sector housing. The council’s cabinet is being asked to approve a report which will provide more protection and higher housing standards for tenants and clear direction over the rights of the home owner.Head of Environment, Health and Consumer Protection, Joanne Waller, explains how it will work, “The policy sets out how the council will enforce relevant housing legislation in a way that offers a better balance between the rights of landlords and the need to provide residents with homes

which are safe, healthy and up to modern standards.“We already have a wide range of enforcement powers and this is all about consolidating those and ensuring a fair, consistent and transparent approach.”Environment Cabinet Member, Cllr Bob Young, says it’s important everyone understands the powers the authority has, “Many of the enforcement powers allow us to step in and carry out works in default, where the owner fails to do so within the required time period, and we can then recover those costs from the owner.“Cabinet is being asked to approve applying a reasonable charge of £225.00 for certain types of enforcement actions including improvement notices, prohibition orders,

hazard awareness notices, emergency remedial action, emergency prohibition orders and demolition orders issued under the Housing Act 2004. “It is only right and fair that council tax payers don’t have to bear the burden of dealing with these issues and introducing charges should encourage owners and landlords to adopt a proactive approach to the maintenance and repair of their properties quickly.”The council believes effective and efficient use of the appropriate enforcement tools will improve housing standards and protect the safety, health and welfare of occupiers. That higher standards of housing, particularly in the private rented sector will improve comuunity spirit and promote stable tenancies.

Villagers in Eldon have been upset by travellers who set up an illegal camp around the village's play area and community centre.Around 11 families are camped on fields behind the community centre and multi-use games area which was completed last year at a cost of £138,000.The games area, which was built after a 15 month campaign by local residents, remains open, although villagers regard it as, to all intents and purposes, off limits.George Pennington of Eldon Community Partnership was frustrated with the response

to the illegal camp, he said, "Everybody and their dog seems to know about it, but nothing seems to be getting done about it. Meanwhile, the children can't use the play area."Residents have complained that the fields were being damaged by the travellers' vehicles and that rubish was beginning to accumulate on the site.A county council spokesperson, Jeanette Stephenson said, "The Travellers' Liaison Service has been making daily visits to monitor the situation and to discuss the travellers' intentions and proposed length of stay."

HAVE YOU SEEN OUR CONTAINER?

A very large container 30' x 8' has gone missing from Sunnydale Leisure Centre. It is washed-out grey and green coloured, with graffiti on one side. It was one of four containers sited at the back of the centre, near the rugby field. The 3 remaining containers, which are 20' long, blue and belong to Sunnydale School are now empty and will be taken away very shortly. The missing container was donated about four year ago by John Wade to Shildon Amateur Boxing Club. Inside is the club's tournament boxing ring and all their other accessories. Club Treasurer Ray Dickenson said, “To replace the ring and everything else will be around £10,000. There are 60 boys from 11 years old upwards, who use the club regularly and without our tournament ring we may not be able to survive. Nearly all our revenue comes from the boxing shows, which are held three times a year. Without our boxing ring there cannot be any tournaments”, he said.Wendy Bake, Sunnydale Leisure Centre Manager said neither the centre or the school had authorised any containers

to be moved and it is a total mystery who has taken it. She said, “I cannot believe anyone would have the cheek to steal something as large as this”.It is thought the container was taken on the evening of either Wednesday 9th or Thursday 10th June by a red and white wagon with a HIAB. The

Leisure Centre is covered by CCT cameras and the Police have been informed. The club are holding an emergency meeting at the Railway Institute on Thursday, 17th June, at 7.30pm. If anyone has any information on the container please contact 0345 60 60 365.

The consultation will run through July and August. The draft strategy, which will be considered by Durham County Council’s Cabinet on Wednesday, June 16th, has six main aims:- to inspire a community of reading and learning- to create community libraries that are centres for community

COUNCIL REVIEW ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR

Councillors are being asked to consider a report into how the County Council can further improve the ways it tackles anti-social behaviour (ASB).The authority’s Safer and Stronger Communities Overview and Scrutiny Committee has undertaken a review into how both the council and its partners address anti-social behaviour and focussed specifically on enviro crime (e.g. dog fouling and fly-tipping), and issues around private sector landlords. The review gathered a wide range of evidence from council officers and members, partner organisations and private sector landlords identifying a number of recommendations to Cabinet and the Safe Durham Partnership, which it’s hoped will help reduce ASB.Dealing with ASB is a high priority for the council and a number of initiatives are already helping address issues across

the county. The report suggests the development and implementation of an anti-social behaviour strategy and action plan, a change in the way unlicensed landlords are dealt with, as well as a change to the way anti-social behaviour which has an effect on the environment, like fly tipping, is dealt with.Anti-social behaviour in parks and open spaces was also looked into as part of the review and comments received from town and parish councils, as well as the police and fire service, were highlighted in the report. These included misuse of alcohol, lack of things to do for young people, and litter. The report also recommends the development of computer systems and information sharing protocols to improve partnership working with Community Safety partner agencies.

CALENDAR SPONSORS

Shildon Railway Cricket Club’s 2011 Calendar Boys received a boost this week as two more sponsors from businesses in the town chipped in with sponsorship. J.B.Hairdressing in Church Street has taken out a single line advert in the calendar and a spokesman for the club spoke enthusiastically of this initial trickle of sponsorship hopefully turning into a flood. “Our three junior sides need transport to every away game as well as equipment. We rely heavily on our senior players to use their own vehicles for transport to matches but presently, with so many juniors now in our 2nd XI, we need to hire a mini bus for their away games too. This on top of weekly expenses for umpires, match balls and

other costs means we need to raise money any way we can to keep the club going and the calendar is a major part of our fund raising this year.”Alison Dyson Property Services has taken out a front page large block advert on the calendar and generously paid £200 towards covering the costs of printing, as well as offering to sell the calendar from her shop premises. A statement from Shildon R.C.C. read “We cannot thank Alison Dyson enough for her kindness and support and hope that more businesses in the town will follow her lead.” The club has also received an anonymous donation of £50 for which it is very grateful. Anyone interested in sponsoring the calendar should contact the treasurer on 779389.

It was the first round of the team knock out competitions last week. In the Men's league the Town had a bye, while in the SW Durham Mixed league, the team played at Cockton Hill and, despite awful rain, they managed a 10-0 win and now play the holders, Spennymoor A (who beat Shildon Rail) in the next round.

The Vets team are fourth in their league and have every chance of improving their position after an 8-0 win over Spennymoor C. The Ladies team, who are reigning champions, are starting to climb the league after a terrible start. They had another 4-0 win this week, this time against Richmond.

The club held a singles competition on Saturday which was won by the 'young blood', Darren Blood, who beat the 'old blood' his father, Colin, on the way. Bert Dixon was the runner up.The next club drawn pairs’ competition is the Wilson & Vest Trophy, which will be held on Saturday, 26th June.

The museum was looking to employ Johnny Malloy, 20, to serve an apprenticeship in the workshop and SASDA was able to help fund his wages for six months with the grant from the Working Neighbourhoods Fund (WNF).Tony Attle, education manager at Locomotion said, “The support from SASDA has been absolutely brilliant, not only is the money helpful towards paying Johnny’s wages, we can’t thank them enough for the extra support we’ve had. “SASDA’s Ann Boyd visited us to arrange the funding when she learned we were looking to recruit and she has continued to pop in many times to see everything is ok and going well, it’s really great to have them on board.” SASDA – which supports businesses in the region and creates employment opportunities for residents through various resources including the Working Neighbourhoods Fund, has helped scores of companies in the area. SASDA business advisors

have engaged with almost 600 businesses in the Sedgefield borough since July 2009, which has led to the creation of more than 140 jobs. They also offer strategic support in redundancy situations and has helped 11 people back into work and safeguarded 10 jobs which were at risk of redundancy.Ann Boyd, sales specialist at SASDA said, “It has been a

wonderful opportunity to help regenerate the engineering industry in Shildon by helping to train a young apprentice at Locomotion. Johnny is enjoying his role in the workshop and putting his training to good use.”For further information about how your business can receive support and funding from SASDA contact 01325 310730.

RUNNERS UP SPOT FOR HORSE

After 24 league games and 7 cup games Shildon Grey Horse Over 40’s finished in second place in Division 2 of the Sunderland Catholic Club Over 40’s League and runners up in the Division 2 Ironside Cup. Three promotions in three years see the Horse play in Division 1 next season and the ultimate goal, the Premier Division, is now in sight. Horse were pipped at the post for the league title by Sunderland Oddies, who won their last game of the season to win the league with 53 points. Horse finished with 52 points from 15 wins and only 2 defeats, but 7 draws proved the downfall for first position. Oddies also beat Horse in the Ironside Cup Final in a game that Horse did not get going in front of goal to leave the score after extra time 0 – 0. Horse lost on penalties after the Oddies keeper made three spot kick saves to win the game. Manager Joyce and his assistant Grant showed great enthusiasm during the course of the season in motivating the capable squad of committed players. In goal, Timmiss played a majority of the games and Shepherd was available with his gloves when needed. Defenders Bulleyment, Henderson, Douglas, Costello, Wickins and Bannister played in a back four or three as selected. Bowtell, Mercer and Burn were the left sided players while Dixon and Joyce played played

on the right. Central midfield was controlled by Wilson, Foster, Greenwood and the attacking options of Bainbridge, Myers and Thompson. Other squad members used during the season included Austin, Bland, Hallimond, Jones, Laffey, Merchant and Moore. Top goalscorer was Foster with 22 then Myers with 12, Dixon 9, Bannister 7 (3 pens), Bainbridge 6, Joyce 5, Douglas 4, Thompson 3, Greenwood 3, Bulleyment 2, Hallimond 2, Bowtell 2, Moore 1, Wickins1, Bland 1, Wilson 1 and 2 OG. Man of the match awards went to Foster (12), Wilson (6), Myers (4), Douglas (3), Greenwood (3) and Burn 1. Good support from all the lads and lasses down at the Rec for home games and especially Basher Bland, Michael and the Chairman Moore at both home and away games. Thanks to Neil and Susan and staff at the Grey Horse pub for after match hospitality and the Town Council for use of the Rec pitch. A spokesperson for the club said, “We shall do it all again next season with hopefully good results, which will be a major challenge to all.”Please note there will be a meeting in the Grey Horse for all players and future players to attend to discuss next season. Meet on Saturday, 26th June, at 12 noon.

Shildon’s junior athletes continued their summer season when they competed in the various schools county championships at the weekend.Chloe Loredo was probably the pick of the bunch at the Cleveland Championships. In the junior Girls 800m, Chloe not only improved her personal best for the event, with a time of 2.16.7, on the way to the county title, she also smashed the county record that had stood since 1981.At the Durham Championships, the day got off to a successful start, with Matthew Coulthard returning to form, with a sub ten minute time for the 3,000m, helping him to second place. In the Intermediate Girls 3,000m, Elizabeth Wood took the lead from the gun, and was never headed, crossing the line as the new county champion. Amy Etherington, in the junior girls 800m, was chasing a qualifying time for the national championships,

and duly produced a life time best, running just inside the 2.19 qualifying mark, as she won the title by over 2 seconds. In the same event, Abbie Avery broke 3 minutes for the first time this season. Scott Thornton competed in the Intermediate Boys 800m, and after a very steady first lap, picked his pace up, and passed numerous runners on the final lap to finish in a time of 2.05, and a second placing. In the longer middle distance events, Kate Avery returned from injury with an impressive performance over 1500m, to win the Senior Girls race in a time of 4.30. In the Intermediate Girls race, Zoe Hewitson continued her return with a third placing, in a time of 5.19. The final middle distance event saw Cameron Boyek, the North East and Northern champion, take on his fellow Intermediate Boys, and a number of senior boys. After a swift 1,000m, Cameron took up the pace, and strode away

from the whole field to win the race and record not only a personal best of 4.00, but also a time well inside the national qualifying standard. In the shorter races, Laura Walker continued her good season form with a resounding victory in the Intermediate Girls 200m. Over the same distance, Georgia Hirst finished 5th in the Junior Girls event. In the 300m for Intermediate Girls, Emily Findlay finished in 6th place. In the field, Rachel McHugh continued her transition to triple jumping by winning the Intermediate Girls Triple Jump. The following athletes will represent their counties at this weekend’s inter counties event at Gateshead: Matt Coulthard, Liz Wood, Scott Thornton, Rachel McHugh, Kate Avery, Laura Walker, Chloe Loredo, Amy Etherington and Cameron Boyek, with the latter 6 likely to be picked for the national champs at Birmingham in July.

LEAGUE CHAMPS TURN ON THE STYLE

Shildon Railway’s cricketers suffered a heavy defeat when visitors Kimblesworth showed their all round power at the Sportsfield in the Readers Durham County League game last Saturday. The defending champions are many peoples' favourites to retain the title this season and on winning the toss, unsurprisingly chose to bat, on what must be one of the best tracks in the county. Shildon’s bowlers toiled as S.Meek (93) and P.Craig (150 not out) entertained the crowd with some powerful hitting.

The innings closed on 348 for 5 with the home side left with a mountain to climb after the tea interval. The Railwaymen managed a respectable 175 all out in reply with C.Lye (40) and P.Garbutt (30) making the best contributions. The Seconds travelled to the “B” Division champions with its usual largely inexperienced side and were put into bat. The Kimblesworth opening bowlers soon made inroads with a mixture of swing and uneven bounce causing havoc in the Shildon ranks. A late flurry by J.A.Nash (21) and M.Condron

(19) helped the side to 75 all out but the home side had little problem in racing to victory, replying with 66 for 1.On Sunday the 1st XI’s cup fixture against Etherley fell victim to the weather. Despite difficult times, the club is determined to effectively ride out the season, blooding juniors, with the aim of becoming more competitive in future seasons. On Saturday Railway play Mainsforth, with the Seconds at home.
