COUNCIL CARE HOMES TO CLOSE Councillors this week approved a controversial recommendation to close seven local authority-run residential care homes, including Shildon's Hackworth House on Cheapside. The other homes which members of Durham County Council’s Cabinet agreed to close were the Manor House, Annfield Plain; Glendale House, Blackhall; Lynwood House, Lanchester; Shafto House, Newton Aycliffe; Stanfield House, Stanley; and East Green, West Auckland. Councillor Morris Nicholls, Durham County Council’s Cabinet member for adult services, said, “Cabinet members had to make a very difficult decision today and one that we did not take lightly. “We are aware that this is an issue that has evoked strong reactions but in deciding to approve the recommendation for closure, we had to take into account a wide range of factors, such as declining demand for residential care and the on-going costs of maintaining the homes. “This is at a time when government funding is being withdrawn in a number of areas and we are facing increasing pressure to reduce expenditure. “We will now begin looking at how best to approach the closures, with the needs, comfort and safety of our residents as the prime concern.” The recommendation to close the homes followed an extensive consultation with residents and their families, carers, staff and trade unions as well as stakeholders and the general public. A total of 230 staff will be affected by the closures, but the council argue that there is sufficient private sector accommodation available to justify the decision. A member of staff at the nearby Hallgarth Surgery was disappointed by the decision, saying, "It is a great shame that it will be closing. The staff work extremely hard and provide a very high standard of care, which is greatly appreciated by everyone concerned." Local police are appealing for witnesses to three incidents of crime which occurred at the weekend. Through the night of Saturday/Sunday 18th and 19th July, a hanging basket was stolen from a house in Glaisdale Gardens. At around 7.00pm on Saturday 18th, a vehicle was broken into at the rear of Shildon Health Centre on Church Street. The person responsible on this occasion was a male on a bike who was wearing a hoodie. A satelite navigation system and some glasses were taken from the car. Thirdly, a garden bench with a storage unit containing four seat covers was taken from a property in Sunnydale through the night on Sunday 19th / Monday 20th. Anyone with information on any of the above crimes is urged to contact Shildon police on 0345 60 60 365 as a matter of urgency. Police are also hoping that residents will be advantageous in helping police tackle crime more efficiently, by reporting anything they think may be suspicious. This comes after a male was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning - caught shortly after stealing lead from the bookmakers on Redworth Road. The culprit was stopped by police on his pedal bike and was found to be in possesion of a number of tools which were used to commit the crime. A spokesperson for Shildon Neighbourhood Policing Team commented, "We would like to encourage anybody who sees anyone they think is acting suspiciously, whether it is during the day or night, to ring police immediately on 0345 60 60 365." WITNESSES SOUGHT TO WEEKEND THEFTS Hackworth House Care Home is set to close. The Northern Citrines Jazz Band will be holding a carnival on Sunday 25th July from 11.00am in Hackworth Park. As well as the Jazz Band Competition, there will be a raffle, tombola, bric-a-brac stalls and much more. "Come along for a fun filled day for all the family," encouraged a spokesperson. COPPER PIPE THEFTLee Barker, of Fraser Court, Coundon and Kimberley Meads, of Kilburn Street, Shildon, both pleaded guilty before magistrates at Newton Aycliffe recently to charges of stealing copper piping and of being in breach of conditional discharges for other offences.Barker, aged 32, was seen by a witness handing his co-defendant a black bag full of copper piping, as he climbed from the window of a house in Adamson Street in Shildon,

on the afternoon of 7th July. The court heard that Barker, who had had a problem with heroin for a number of years, had enlisted the support of the 21 year-old single mother with the promise of cash from the proceeds of the sale of scrap. Extensive damage had been caused to the property but it was impossible to gauge how much of this was down to the defendants. Barker, who has outstanding fi nes owing the court in

excess of £940, was released on unconditional bail to appear again on July 28th. The Probation Service was requested to prepare a Pre-sentence Report with steering towards a 26 weeks custodial sentence or Crown Court trial. The case against Meads, who the defence described as “naive and vulnerable”, was stood down in order for a similar report to be prepared, this time with a view to a Community Order being imposed.

Shildon Railway fi rst XI travelled to Evenwood for their game last Saturday. Evenwood made 302-7 from their allotted overs (J.P Nash 3-34). In reply Shildon were bowled out for 116 with J.P Nash scoring 28 and Tom Moss 19.The second XI hosted

Evenwood in the reverse fi xture. Railway were bowled out for a meagre 24 with only R. Jones and A. Ramsey offering some form of resistance at the end of the innings both scoring 7. Evenwood easily overcame their small target without losing any wickets.

Shildon Railway under 13s hosted Crook on Sunday morning. Crook won the toss and decided to bat, posting 66 for the loss of only 3 wickets in their 20 overs. A feature of the Shildon bowling was the accuracy, as there were only 7 extras in the innings. The extras count has been as high as 33 in matches

earlier in the season. The Crook total looked a competitive one, as Shildon lost 6 wickets in their reply which meant 48 runs being taken from their score. However, the extra fi repower in the Shildon batting order (T.Claydon 22 and M. Claydon 18) and intelligent running between the wickets saw Shildon win by 14 runs.

SHILDON RAILWAY

UNDER 13s

Shildon’s junior athletes have been excelling themselves over the past few weeks.Following on from very successful championships in May and June, the club provided 6 athletes at the Schools National Championships in Birmingham, and came away with 3 fi nalists, and 2 medals.Cameron Boyek was in excellent form over 1500m as he took on the best in the country. The reigning North East, Northern and Durham Schools champion, he arrived at these champs with a ranking of 15th in the UK. Having broken the club record in the heats on Friday, he then smashed the record again, as he claimed a deserved bronze medal. His time of 3:54.76 also ranks him 5th in the UK. Chloe Loredo showed no nerves as she contested her fi rst schools national T&F event. She eased into the 800m fi nal with an assured performance and followed this up on the Saturday with a 5th placing, recording a time of 2:16.34. Chloe is currently

ranked 11th in the UK. Amy Etherington, also contesting her fi rst national event, put in a good performance in her heat on the Friday, but failed to make the fi nal. Her 800m time of 2:24.74 was slightly slower than her personal best. In her last year at these championships, Kate Avery warmed up for the world junior champs in Canada with a silver medal in the 1500m. Recording a season’s best of 4:26.86, Kate can now look forward to a solid race in Canada over 5000m. Rachel McHugh, competing from the bottom end of the age group, performed exceptionally well in the Inter Girls Triple Jump. Her best effort of 10.76m was a new personal best, but was agonisingly a few centimetres short of a place in the fi nal. In the 200m event, Laura Walker clocked a season’s best of 26.01, but again missed out on qualifying. At the 4th North East League fi xture at Gateshead, the athletes had to contend with

heavy rain, which provided a waterlogged track. However, that did not deter the Shildon runners. Cameron Boyek continued his form with a club record in the 3000m. His time of 8.50 knocked nearly 10 seconds off the previous mark and moved him into the UK top 20. Over the same distance, Matthew Coulthard continued his return to form with a good 10.04 clocking, whilst Zoe Hewitson, competing for the fi rst time over 3000m, recorded a creditable 11:11.6, In the 800m events, Jake Findlay was the pick of the group with a personal best of 2:21.4. Chloe Loredo continued her consistent runs over the distance with another victory, recording a time of 2:16.8. Rosie Findlay fi nished second in her race, with a time of 2.38.3. Other 800m competitors were Ryan Etherington (2:19.7), Natalie Owens (2:29.0), Amy Etherington (2:32.4), Joseph Bell (2:35.0) and Jack Wade (2:48.1).

It has been poor week for the teams at Shildon Town Bowling Club with yet again only the Ladies team winning. They beat North Park at home on Wednesday 14th by 79 shots to 30 shots and gained all 4 points. Unfortunately, the club played Spennymoor A team twice this week. On Thursday 15th the men's team lost 62 shots to 74 shots and gained 1 point. In

JUNIOR ATHLETES EXCELL IN CHAMPIONSHIPS

the mixed league the A team travelled to Spennymoor and suffered a heavy defeat, 57 shots for the Town and 103 shots to Spennymoor A. The Town B team entertained Leeholme on Monday evening, the result was 4 points Shildon, 6 points Leeholme. The Vets team travelled to Wolsingham and despite a close game lost by 53 shots to 58 shots. This gave the Town team 2 points.
