Oxfordshire News Issue 4/2017
Bags of Good News -
Midcounties Co-op Sponsorship If you ever wondered what happens to the money that is
spent on single-use carrier bags, we have the answer!
We were recently nominated to receive funding from The
Midcounties Co-operative Carrier Bag Good Causes Fund.
Our nomination was successful and we are thrilled to
announce that we have been awarded just over £2000
to help fund production costs of our quarterly Oxfordshire News for the next year.
The Kidlington and north west Oxfordshire stores have also been sending
volunteers to help at the Supper Club and we’re exploring others ways they
might support us in the future. We’d like to say a huge THANK YOU to
the Midcounties Co-operative for their very generous support.
Christmas card fundraiser YoungDementia UK Christmas

PACE Group Update At a recent meeting of our
PACE group, members
reported on being involved in
discussions about European
funding, giving presentations
to NHS staff, and speaking to
students at Brookes University.
Feedback received from these
events about our members’
valuable, informative input,
and our wider work, was highly
complimentary. Among the
audience of 100+ Brookes
students, many said that the
insights our members gave
made it the best lecture of their
two year course - and they
requested another next year!
The group also discussed
money matters, scams,
techniques for coping with
challenges, and some
recent dementia research.
If you’d like to join PACE
(Positive Activists, Consultants &
Educators) contact Anna Eden
for more information.
Christmas Party Our Christmas Party is
nearly here. It is on
Thursday 14 December,
at Cassington Village Hall,
from 7.30-10pm.
Hope to see you there!

Getting together
The Supper Club ‘A warm welcome’, ‘friendly’,
‘fun’, ‘fantastic food’, ‘great
playlist’ – these are just some
words used to describe the
experience of our monthly
Supper Club by the people
who come. We can’t find a
better way to describe it!
We’d love you to join us at
Cassington Village Hall at
7.30pm on the 4th Thursday of
each month. It is a great
opportunity for us all to get
together and enjoy -
• a delicious supper that you
don’t have to cook, yay!!
• excellent company - you
can bring friends and family
or make new friends, and
• fantastic live music, or
sometimes a DJ - we feature
all music styles - but our
favourites are those we can
all dance to.
If you prefer to be behind the
scenes why not join our lovely
bunch of volunteers, like the
folks from the Eynsham branch
of the Co-op? They’ve been
giving their time to come and
help our volunteer team lay on
a truly enjoyable evening.
I am delighted to be back with
YoungDementia UK as Socials
Co-ordinator and I’d love to
meet you and welcome you to
the Supper Club!

Be Scam Aware
Don’t fall for online scams Did you know that adults are
now 20 times more likely to fall
victim to fraud than robbery?
Many people are targeted via
spam / scam emails, fake
websites, phoney tax rebate
schemes or computer service
fraud, often via telephone calls
or emails. Vulnerable people
are particularly at risk of falling
victim to scams.
There are five keys things to
remember.
• Never disclose security
details such as your PIN or
full password.
• Don’t assume an email
request or caller is genuine.
• Don’t be rushed, take time to
stop and think.
• Listen to your instincts.
• Stay in control. Have the
confidence to refuse unusual
requests for information.
For more information about
staying safe online visit the
website ‘Get Safe Online’ at
www.getsafeonline.org
Or, if you have been a victim
of an online scam, you can
report the incident to
Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

for you?

UK Dementia Congress YoungDementia UK team
members Tessa, Anna, Mandy,
Kate and Donna travelled to
Doncaster Racecourse in
November, to attend the
12th UK Dementia Congress.
Our Young Dementia Network
had a stand at the two-day
conference and Donna, our
National Development
Manager (pictured right), took
part in a group presentation
about young onset dementia.
It was a very interesting few
days, enabling us to connect
with new people, learn from
others and share the good
things we’re doing in
Oxfordshire with people from
all over the country. We even
had a visit from Parliamentary
Under Secretary of State,
Jackie Doyle-Price MP who
was keen to learn more about
young onset dementia.
Team News We’re pleased to
welcome our new
Support Co-ordinator
Michelle Francis, who
joined the team
in September.
… but we’re very sad to
be saying goodbye to
Support Worker
Liz Greenlaw. Liz has
shown such care and
sensitivity in her work and
she will be much missed
by members and team
alike. We wish her the
best of luck as she moves on.
Write On Valerie! Not only has YoungDementia UK
member Valerie Blumenthal
had her 12th novel published,
but as well as writing
the book she also
illustrated the cover!
Set on an Italian island,
the ‘The Lupo Stick’
features a character
newly diagnosed with
dementia. The novel is
part love story, part
mystery and part a
search for identity.
You can buy a copy in
print or on Kindle from
Amazon (ISBN 978-0995785304).

Fundraising
There have been
loads of fantastic
fundraising events
taking place in the
last few months.
In August we
drooled at the
tempting bakes
made by our super bakers for
the Summertown cake sale,
raising £225. PS We love the
smart team tabards ladies!
In September a
team of runners
entered the
Ridgeway Run.
Paul Oakley
finished an
impressive
6th on the
leader
board!
Staying with
the active
theme, our
Every Step
Challenge,
raised over
£2300.
YoungDementia UK member
Jacqui said, ‘I enjoyed the
challenge. It was hard to get
up every single day, but also
enjoyable. Now that the
challenge is finished I miss it so
will try and do a walk a day,
but perhaps smaller ones!’
Our Support Service Manager,
Anna Eden, smashed her
10,000 steps a day target and
said she found parts of Oxford
she never knew existed. Hats
off to the Oakley family, their
friends and neighbours, who
walked an astounding
3,032,840 steps between the
eight of them. We hope you’re
all enjoying a very well earned
rest for your efforts!
September was also a musical
month. Oxford Spires Rotary
held a wonderful music night
that raised £800 and two
concerts at Manchester
College raised £260 between
them. A very special thank
you to Graham Rayner,
Doug Harbour, Emma Gough
and Rachel Carruthers.

In Helen’s place we are
delighted to welcome
Pru Sly who joined us in
mid-October.
Pru brings many years of
fundraising experience
and also has a family
connection to
YoungDementia UK.
You can contact Pru via email
or 07957 495684.
Our glorious Golf Day Ex-YoungDementia UK trustee,
Lyndsey Mann, organised a
superb golf day at Frilford
Heath Golf Club in October,
attended by over 80 keen
golfers. A hugely enjoyable
day was had by all. The event,
raffle and auction raised well
over £10,000! We would like to
say a very special thank you to
Lyndsey who worked so hard
to organise the day, as well as
to Alison, Gordon, Vaughan
and Larry for their much
valued contributions.
Give as you Live If you’re about to start your
Christmas shopping and plan
to shop online, we hope you’ll
sign up to Give as you Live on
the website
www.giveasyoulive.com
If you buy online with any of
the 4200 participating retailers,
they’ll donate money to us
and it won’t cost you a penny!
Goodbye Helen,
Hello Pru! Finally, we are very sad to say
farewell to Helen Lerwill who
worked so hard to develop our
community fundraising over
the last 2½ years and we wish
her well for the future.
And finally ...
Young Dementia Network Update We’ve had a busy few months - the Young Dementia Network membership
has grown to over 1000 members across the UK - 7% of them from
Oxfordshire, which is fantastic! Thank you to everyone who has already
joined. If you haven’t, we would love you to be a member of the Network.
Please visit www.youngdementiauk.org/sign-our-mailing-list to sign up.
We are about to launch our young onset dementia diagnostic guide for
GPs as well as an information leaflet for people who are newly diagnosed.
The Network may also be coming to a GP surgery near you, as we begin to
develop resources for GP waiting rooms. Keep an eye on your surgery’s
screens and leaflet stands as we hope to be making an appearance soon.

PS - We’re nearly 20 years old! 2018 is set to be a special year for YoungDementia UK as it will be 20 years
since the charity – first called The Clive Project – was launched in
Oxfordshire. We’re planning to mark this milestone with some special
events during 2018/19 and have had a commemorative logo designed.
