She looks at the problem of female under-representation in sport, exploring some of the reasons why, in this country, just under two million more men than women take part in regular sport. Kinder argues: ‘If we want to increase our number of elite sportswomen, we really need to look at the root of the problem, and that begins at adolescence. We need to make major sports attractive for girls’. It was with great timing, then, that Mrs Thomas came to tell me about our Junior Athletics Team’s victory on Tuesday afternoon in the East Sussex Schools Track and Field Cup. The twelve girls from Years 7 and 8 had to work together to achieve the highest points score across different track and field events. The points are all based on performance rather than on placing (although Almi’s win was truly exceptional and it gained lots of points for the team!) and, because the girls could only enter one track and one field event each, this meant that many of them had to take part in events that they were not in their ‘comfort zone’ and some of which many of them had not even tried before. And so what is special is not so much the girls winning the day and reaching the regional final, but rather that they were all willing to try to perform their best in a wide range of events for the good of the whole team: Mrs Thomas’s pride was in the fact that they had all ‘given it a go’. Team work. Giving it a go. Surely what girls’ sport should be about? Well done Charlotte, Sovanne, Yasmin, Maisy, Carmen, Eve, Almi, Josie, Chloe, Eleanor, Ester and Eden for showing us the way. Design Technology Last week, a group of year 9 and 10 GCSE Design Technology students visited the Design Museum in London to take part in a workshop entitled ‘Mystery Products’. We arrived at the museum not knowing quite what to expect, but were soon involved in the session run by specialist staff at the museum, studying the selection of odd products before us! We didn’t immediately know what each one was for, so we made intelligent guesses! Amongst them was a toilet brush designed to look like a plant growing out of a plant pot! We found out that the designer was Giovannoni who works for Alessi. We did lots of observational drawing and talked about issues such as target market and USP (unique selling point). We also had chance to visit the Design Awards Exhibition which showcases all manner of new and innovative products. We returned to school brimming with ideas for our GCSE coursework, determined to become young designers of the future!

Final Invitation for English Revision Morning18th May 9am-12am The Saturday Session English Revision Workshop is tomorrow! The event is open to all our Year 11 students on Saturday 18th May at the Senior School. The event will run from 9am until 12am and will cover final revision strategies and most importantly how to deliver excellent essays and written pieces in the final examination.

Students who attended last year said the morning really helped them to fine tune exam skills and perfect essay technique at this vitally important stage.

If your daughter is interested in attending this session, she will need to arrive in school by 8.50am and should expect to leave between 12 and 12.10. She should bring a snack, a drink and copies of her examination texts, including the two novels and her poetry anthology. Entry will be via the chairstore door. See you there!

‘A’ level Exhibition EveningThe Art & Photography Department’s annual ‘A’ level exhibition evening was held this week on Thursday 16th May. Each year the ‘A’ level Art & Photography students look forward to this point in the course as it is a chance to showcase all the work that has been produced during the AS and A2 year. It is such a great opportunity to see all the candidates work and a proud moment for girls and parents alike. Friends and family gathered to celebrate their achievements and artistic brilliance with a glass of wine and twiglets! The Art work was exhibited in the gallery and library while the Photography AS/A2 was displayed over in 604 in the sixth form. Every single student has worked incredibly hard throughout the year and everyone was very impressed by the exciting, ambitious and creative work. Well done and thank you for being such an outstanding group of girls to teach! The Art Department

Science and Dance Sessions with Alanna Orpen

On Thursday and Friday of last week Years Three to Six were lucky enough to take part in some special dance sessions led by one of our ex pupils, Alanna Orpen. Alanna studied in both the Junior and Senior Schools and went on to study Zoology at Durham. She was always a keen dancer when she was at the school and has maintained her interest ever since. Her research for her masters at Imperial College is partly on the beneficial effects of teaching Science through the medium of dance and the girls were delighted to be part of her wonderfully informative and enjoyable lessons, which included the topics magnetism, states of matter, the phases of the moon and the circulation of the blood. We can all vouch for the fact that Alanna’s method works well and we wish her all the best in her research.

RoundersCongratulations to the U9A and B Rounders Teams who played Farlington on Wednesday. The A Team drew 101/2. The B Team won 10 to 91/2. Special mention to the 6 Yr3’s who stepped up to play in a Yr4 game!
