OPINION

TEEN LOVE

“He likes to surprise me with little

things and he would drop everything to be with me.”

— senior Cheona Phillips about Curtis Morse

All high school relationships are different.

High school relationships are a slightly less dumb version of middle school relationships. Most people don’t get anything out of them except for heartbreak and maybe some experience, and most of the time it’s over before or soon after one/both of the people go to college.

Sometimes they even end in hatred.

A high school relationship means holding hands in the halls, walking each other to class, go-ing to prom together, gossiping to friends about how “in love” you are and hanging out with your sig-

nificant other rather frequently. Students need to keep the im-

portance of their relationships in perspective to make sure they stay healthy and productive.

Physical education teacher Brian Henry's years of adult rela-tionships has given him some per-spective on teen romance. “High school relationships are dumb. Speaking from a coach’s stand-point, it can cause athletes not to perform to the best of their abili-ties, and it softens them. You are going to have plenty of time for a serious relationship after high school," he said.

If you decide to be in a rela-tionship, no matter how old you are, you should want to be in it for the right reasons, not just to “get some” of whatever it may be that you’re shooting for. Don't do it just for popularity, and certainly not just to go to prom. It does happen.

You should have true, genu-ine feelings before you commit to dating. Junior Emma Williams

If you want to maintain your relationship, you have to know your boundaries.

No matter how much you think your bae loves you, you have to realize that you (probably) aren’t the only thing going on in their life. It’s not all about you. Main-taining your other friendships is as important as your boyfriend or girlfriend.

If you don’t, who’s gonna be there for you when you get your heart broken?

No one.
