I am 22 years old and graduated from the University of Johannesburg in January 2009, prior to taking up this opportunity in April this year. The gap between secondary education and tertiary education is immense, and this has recently been highlighted in the media, whereby learners are inadequately equipped to meet both the requirements and challengers of tertiary institutions. However the gap between tertiary education and the working world is one that some find daunting and others embrace and find success. I was schooled at Gordon Road Girls in Durban, St Mary’s in Pretoria and matriculated at Pretoria High School for Girls in 2005, where I attended the boarding school. I come from a highly competitive family, which I have to highlight as being probably one of my strongest and weakest attributes. I have a bachelors degree in marketing and communications and my study choice was clearly influenced by my passion for interaction with people at all levels and the immense passion I have for exploring new ideas and opportunities, plus an inherited need for competitiveness, the need for challenge and the will to win or succeed, not purely for recognition, but most importantly for self-fulfillment. As I entered the ADvTECH group and began my training month, I was completely unsure of exactly what I had embarked on. I believe it is difficult to know what you want straight out of university, but when you find it you just know. I’ve found a career path at Cassel and Company, and it all began with the outstanding training that sets a foundation for recruitment. Then I entered the branch, not being one to admit fear, but that was very scary. What I would soon learn, is that those butterflies never go away, it’s how you channel it that matters. I then learnt the ropes and started to slowly but surely find my feet within my team. By following the processes set by ADvTECH the chance of success is so much bigger. Each day got easier and each day I learnt more and more. It is through practice that one is able to adapt what you have learnt and make it your own, and soon you begin to find that inner confidence in what you do. My advice to any new consultant would be to follow what you were taught and listen to your mangers, as they are right. As time progressed, my determination and will to succeed increased. This was done through persistence, an abundance of candidates interviewed and the marketing and cold calling all day. I then saw the success in my first placement in June this year. That inner need for success I have found at Cassel and Company, even though I am going through a major learning curve. Being my first job, I feel I have achieved success as Employee of the Month, Referrer of the Month for two months as well as Cassel Perm Consultant of the Month and Club Level 1 all in 5 short months and each month as targets get higher so does my billing. I have also achieved some really great incentives which include a full Spa day and a day off in the month of September. All these just illustrate hard work, determination and the right leaders can allow you to achieve exciting things. From a young age, I was always taught to understand that half measures will never be good enough. Discipline, determination, honesty and hard work make you extremely lucky. I believe in adding value to everything I do, my clients are my equal, and knowledge and understanding of their exact needs as well as the ability to be persuasive and never giving up, even if it means making 30 calls to the same client to get what you need - you must do it. I have been recently considered quite the stalker by my colleagues, but I think this is what makes me strong because although it can be irritating for a client, eventually they will see the value in one’s persistence when they have the best possible candidate, which is what I believe I try the best to provide. The ability to match their needs with the correct candidate and skills will ensure a culture fit and sustainable work relationship between client and candidate beneficial to both parties in the long-term. As one’s experience in the industry grows, the matching by consultant between client and candidate can only get stronger. What I have come to realize is that not all situations deliver the results that you hope for, but it is the ability to pick yourself up and continue that will make you the best consultant you can be. I believe the passion for recruitment comes from the heart, you either have or you don’t. I do believe that it is easier to say than to actually do, but if you can remain positive in difficult times then you will experience success. If you believe you cannot, then you can’t, if you believe there is a recession, then there is a recession. Every negative presents an opportunity, so look for it and you will find it. This is the time to capitalise on your competitor’s inefficiencies. My favorite quote from Mahatma Gandhi; “Live everyday as if you will die tomorrow, but learn everyday as if you were to live forever”. My aim at Cassel and Company is not to be better than everyone else, although that would be great, but instead it is to be the best that I possibly can be, at whatever I do. I must pay much credit to my immediate superior Terri-Anne Nell for the guidance, coaching and the passion that she displays daily that drives me everyday. It is all these aspects that are important factors to becoming the best consultant you can be. Thanks to Cassel and Company and my immediate colleagues for the support and friendship. Hi, my name is Tammy Brosnan, Recruitment Consultant at Cassel and Company.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) (also referred to locally

as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM))

is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention and cure. The campaign also offers information and support

to those affected by breast cancer.

As well as providing a

platform f o r

breast cancer

charities, to raise awareness of their work and of the

disease, BCAM is also a prime opportunity to remind women to be breast aware for earlier detection.

Pink days

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month each October, people raise money by organizing activities such as theme parties or a “pink day” (when employees wear pink clothing or accessories) at work. The money raised is donated to the organizers’ choice of breast cancer care or research programs.

Exam time

Any lump that you discover should always be checked by your doctor. About 90% of breast lumps are not found by doctors or mammograms but by women doing breast exams themselves – that’s why it’s so important that you examine your breasts regularly. The best time to do this is one week after your period begins because lumps may sometimes surface shortly before menstruation, only to disappear again afterwards.

While in the shower or bath, explore the breast and underarm areas with your fingertips. Raise one arm and place your hand behind your head. Slowly and methodically move the pads of your fingertips over the breasts in a circular motion. Also feel the armpit and nipple areas. You could do the same test while lying in bed, with your arm tucked behind your head.

You can also stand in front of the mirror with your arms raised above your head to check for changes in size, shape or contour. Check if there is any nipple discharge. Look out for lumps in the breasts and armpits, a puckering of the skin of the breasts, an unusual increase in the size of one breast, a new dimpling of the nipple, enlargement of the glands, a change in the skin around the nipple, an unusual swelling in the armpit, or a breast that is suddenly noticeably lower than the other.

Take care

• Breasts are just as delicate as the facial area, yet we don’t cleanse

them as carefully. Consider using a good face-cleansing product or one of the specialised breast cleaning products on the market, to ensure that the breast skin isn’t irritated. • Prevent an uncomfortable skin rash by drying carefully underneath your breasts. • Don’t use any potential irritants around the nipple area such as hair-removal wax or any other hair-removal product. Rather remove nipple hair with a tweezer and apply some antiseptic cream immediately afterwards. • Never squeeze any spots that might appear on your breasts, especially near the nipples as theycould easily become infected.

What is a wave?A wave is equal parts conversation and document. People can communicate and work together with richly formatted text, photos, videos, maps, and more.

A wave is shared. Any participant can reply anywhere in the message, edit the content and add participants at any point in the process. Then playback lets anyone rewind the wave to see who said what and when.

A wave is live. With live transmission as you type, participants on a wave can have faster conversations, see edits and interact with extensions in real-time

Real-time collaborationConcurrency control technology lets all people on a wave edit rich media at the same time.

study leave. These incentive days are not referred to as ‘Annual Leave’ and cannot be accumulated after 2010. Therefore, it cannot to be paid out upon termination of employment.

this incentive leave, please ensure that you receive the necessary authorization from your Manager and complete a leave form as required for leave to be taken.

We encourage you to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Kickstart your immune system

With stress, pollution, all the viruses going around, and some of us smoking, we need to boost our immune systems to fight infections. Take action by including antioxidant-rich foods, such as berries, mixed peppers, broccoli, spinach, papaya and pineapple in your diet every day. Also include more foods high in essential oils. These include salmon (sushi/tinned pink salmon), tuna, pumpkin seeds, cashew nuts and avocados.

Dangers that lurk in your fridge

Been away for the long weekend? Chances are that when you opened your fridge on Monday, you were blown away by foul-smelling, mould-growing leftovers. Urgh. Time for a major clean-up. But is it necessary to throw away everything that's got mould on it?Don't worry about the mouldy patch on the Cheddar cheese. If you're not grossed out about it, you can simply cut off the mouldy section and still enjoy the rest of the cheese. If the cheese is covered in mouldy patches, however, it's best to just cut your losses and add "cheese" to your shopping list. The same goes for firm fruits, vegetables and hard salami. But beware: if mould has grown on luncheon meats, leftover meat and poultry, cooked pasta, casseroles, soft cheese, yoghurt, jams, bread or nuts, it's safer to throw it away. These could pose a health threat.

Prevent heart disease – dig in!

Sometimes we’re not sure what we should be eating to keep our hearts healthy, because there’s so much focus on what we shouldn’t eat. Reducing cholesterol and saturated fat intake is important to prevent heart disease. So which fats can you eat? Enjoy unsalted nuts and seeds in salads, stir-fries or as a snack. Use moderate amounts of olive oil for cooking and, with Balsamic vinegar, for salad dressing. Enjoy avocado in salads or as a lunch topping for seed bread. The essential fat in salmon and mackerel is extremely beneficial for your heart, and if you’re at risk for heart disease, it’s advisable to take an omega-3 fatty acid supplement.
