the Indian Institute of forest management (IIfm), a premier institute of the ministry of environment, forest and Climate Change, government of India, has over the last three decades been recognized as a leading exponent of sectoral management education in India. an interdisciplinary approach of learning, synergizing with research and education has been the hallmark of IIfm. during this period, the post graduate diploma in forestry management (pgdfm), the flagship course offered at IIfm, has evolved continuously to produce a widely recognized pool of talented managers who have contributed to the development of our country. You will be glad to know that IIfm was ranked 8th in the ‘India rankings 2016’, under the national Institutional ranking framework of the ministry of hrd, govt. of India, amongst 609 participating management institutes.

IIfm has emphasized innovative methods of teaching and diversified curriculum. It caters to the forestry, environment, development, Conservation and other allied sectors. the students who are selected through a rigorous entrance process are provided not only the learning atmosphere and opportunities expected of any national level institute, but an effort is also made to keep them continuously grounded in field realities. the intellectual capital available in the nine faculty areas, in conjunction with an excellent infrastructure, provides the base for students to mature into managers with sensitivity and understanding of social, cultural, economic and environmental issues of our times along with the necessary problem solving ability.

the Indian Institute of forest management (IIfm) is a premier sectoral management institute of the country. We at IIfm make every effort to create knowledge useful to the managers in the areas of development, environment, natural resource management and allied sectors.

the post graduate diploma in forestry management (pgdfm) programme of IIfm has moved on to complete 28 years of excellence and commitment towards creating and nurturing ‘managers ready for tomorrow’. the course lays emphasis on knowledge, leadership and sensitivity to be able to appreciate various nuances of sustainable and inclusive development in whichever sector our graduates choose to work in. for the last quarter century, our students have achieved success in various sectors including nature conservation, rural development, environment, forestry, livelihood, microfinance, banking, research, marketing, education and corporate social responsibility.

the summer Internship at IIfm is an integral part of the pgdfm course curriculum that aims to provide a platform for hands-on learning to our students over a period of 10 weeks under the able guidance of a ‘reporting officer’ from an organisation. the 2016-18 batch comprises of 104 students and like any other batch at IIfm, is varied in terms of academic, professional and cultural background.

In the evolving context of the current economic and development imperatives, a manager needs to be agile and respond to the diverse challenges being faced by organizations. We at IIfm acknowledge this and hope that while doing a summer Internship in your organization, the students would benefit and develop into well-rounded professionals who can steer organizations through new challenges. our pedagogy aims to build on this training and then further strengthen the students’ capability to comprehend concepts and their practical utility through the second year of the pgdfm course.

the summer Internships 2016 like always, have received tremendous support from the Industry. the national event “Coalescence”, the guest lectures, frequent interactions with alumni and other industry experts have attracted participation from various companies like WWf, terI, ItC, ernst and Young, Il & fs, Citibank and others.

IIfm believes in the importance of giving its students extensive practical exposure alongside invaluable academic inputs to ensure their holistic development. this ensures a perfect mix of business acumen and academic intellect. such exposure is provided by means of summer Internship, field visits, industry visits, guest lectures, and live projects. a ten-week compulsory summer Internship provides an opportunity for students to apply academic knowledge to real time management problems.

a 21-day-long field trip in first year and 15-day-long field trip in second year are conducted during the programme to provide hands-on ground experience. guest

Established in 1982 as an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, IIFM was conceptualized in response to the recommendations of the National Commission on Agriculture. The impetus generated by these recommendations culminated in an alliance with the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad through which the philosophy and raison d’être of IIFM was evolved. The Swedish International Development Agency also contributed financially and technically in establishing the Institute. Since its inception, IIFM has been home to some of the most brilliant young minds who are constantly raising the bar of excellence in this dynamic field. a collection of films on forestry, environment, development, livelihood and management are available. the online public access Catalogue (opaC) facility is available on all terminals connected through lan. IIfm has more than 40,000 books and subscriptions to more than 210 national and International periodicals, a number of Cds and dVds on various topics of academic interests, and subscribes to a number of International online databases such as Jstor, prowess, J-gate (social and management sciences), ebsCo (business source elite and environment Complete), science direct, business management and accounting, environmental science and Indiastat.



IIFM provides contemporary classroom learning using methods like case analysis and conceptual discussions, along with review of literature on various topics given as assignments and presentations. Subjects like Natural Resource Management in Rural Development (NRD) are taught from conservation as well as development perspectives so that students can develop a holistic understanding of the critical issues related to natural resource management and rural development. General Management courses of finance and marketing are taught through both corporate as well as rural development perspectives. These methods encourage self-study among the students which enhance interpersonal skills and inculcate the spirit of team work. The curriculum has effectively expanded the horizon of knowledge and opportunities for the students in the field of sustainable development, rural development, marketing, research and consultancy, financial services.

IIfmites have succeeded consistently in strengthening the bond between sI organizations and IIfm. this has resulted in a relationship which extends beyond the boundaries of internships and campus placements.

case studyClassroom sessions are aided through various methods, most important of which is case analysis. the case studies used are from elite national and international publications and cover not only international cases but also cover the south asian perspective. Case studies cut across various organizations and issues and therefore, they are crucial in understanding various problems.

research and Presentationsto make the learning experience self-motivated and participatory, professors play the role of facilitators by providing a foundation for discussion and leaving the ground open for students’ research through self-study and presentations. this method provides an opportunity to explore the intricacies of a subject area and ingrains the necessary aspects of time management and collective thinking. It helps students to develop good writing, presentation and analytical skills. many students have developed upon these opportunities to publish their own research papers and articles in journals etc.

Field visitstwo field visits, first after the 2nd semester and second after the 5th semester are essential part of the curriculum. these field visits of 15-20 days each help students to understand the various aspects of sustainable development. this includes visits to industries, rural and tribal areas, national parks, ngos, renewable energy projects, state forest departments, plantations, eco-tourism sites, warehouses etc. across various states of India. these visits not only give grassroot level knowledge to the students but also empower them to take balanced decision in professional career. additionally, many other one-day field visits are undertaken by the students which are course specific.

activitiescultural clubthe Cultural club adds a lot of fun and enthusiasm to students’ life by organizing different festival celebrations and cultural events rejuvenating every dimension of creativity of the students. the activities give opportunities to students to celebrate and socialize. they add flavors to a diligently occupied life. events like ghazal nights, garba, talent-hunt and festivals are celebrated with gaiety and fervor.

literary clubactivities of the literary Club help students in nurturing their intellectual talents. panel discussions, foreign language classes, debates, poster making competitions are organized by the literary club. this helps the students expand their knowledge create an atmosphere of intellectual activity and benefit from the other brains around them.

nature clubnature Club engages students to make efforts to conserve the environment. Its activities are geared towards protecting the environment and connecting with the society & communities at large. the same is witnessed in the events they organize viz. nukkad natak, blood donation camp, cleanliness drive, celebration of children’s day with deprived children and creating awareness through events like photography competition, t-shirt painting and clay modeling.

sPorts clubfacing competitions, team spirit, hard work, leadership, discipline, achieving goals are just some of the qualities that sports imbibe in oneself. sports club at IIfm makes every effort to provide ample opportunities to the students to partake in their flagship events like athletics, Cricket, soccer, tennis, badminton, basketball, Volleyball, table tennis etc. this also gives them a chance to represent the institute at all India forest meets. faculty and alumni also participate in many of the events.

draMatics clubperforming on stage enriches students with confidence and helps them to open up. the dramatics club exposes students and audience to literature of playwrights that form a treasure trove of our culture. apart from that, organizing events helps the students to learn management skills. the club also provides students exposure at national level where they compete with other institutes.

Movie club

activities and events of the movie club are not just informative but relaxing as well. It is responsible for edutainment of the students. It screens movies and documentaries on weekends, runs movie and documentary marathons, shows open theatre movies and organizes quizzes. apart from the members of the club, other students also have a say in screening of the movies of their choice.


Mess coMMitteeWith active participation of the students, the mess committee takes care of the cuisine at IIfm. every term new members replace the old members and get a chance to learn the intricacies involved in operating the mess. they are involved in activities such as deciding the menu, checking accounts and managing finances of the mess activities, doing market research to get idea of the best available prices for food items and handling feasts on festive occasions.

Industry visits, guest lectures and live projects. the ten-week compulsory summer Internship provides an opportunity for students to apply their academic knowledge to real time management problems. a 21-day-long field trip in first year and 15-day-long field trip in second

GuiDelines to offer

the duration of summer Internship is for a period of 10 weeks, april 03 (monday) - June 09 (friday), 2017 which includes the presentation of work and report submission at host organization.

1. to facilitate the student in selecting a project, the organizations are expected to give a brief description of the work to be done including deliverables by the student within a period of 10 weeks.

2. Kindly note that not more than two students are generally permitted to do a single project. also, please kindly indicate the qualification and language requirements that are essential or desirable, and whether the requirements apply to one or both the students taking up the project.

3. please do not change the projects or make substantial alteration in the scope of the submitted project proposal, as project detail is one of the most important criteria for choosing a project by the student.

4. please mention the emoluments in terms of stipend, accommodation, travelling and other expenses to be offered during the project as per the organization norms.

Confirmation of Internship/Joining Status: January To March 2017

Reporting at Organization: 03rd April 2017

Relieving date from Organization: 9th June 2017

5. once with the organization, the students will rely on the reporting officer (r.o.) for guidance, and hence, please ensure that the officer nominated as r.o. has sufficient time for guiding students.

6. on completion of the project, the students present their findings to the organization and submit the draft report before the relieving date from the organization i.e. June 9, 2017.
