Trivia Question from Last Week What year was this

picture taken?Hint: what year model is that UFO up there

in the sky?

For the answer to this one we went straight to the source. Charlie Eskridge who was there when the country club was built.

“I have one on the wall in my office that says May 1971. My recollection is it was supposed to match what they had planned for the entry to the island. I think the one on the right by Jessie’s Liquor was built first as the road was just two lanes and they knew it would be expanded. They wanted to span the four lanes with an arch but TexDot would not let them. I guess the ones at the gate look the same generally, just a different scale.”

Still no word on the UFO.

SPORTSLiving in the Shadows

On December 29, 2012, Ruth Ann Steinhagen passed away at the age of 83, in Chicago, Illinois. Who is Ruth Steinhagen you ask? She was once the 19-year-old young, obsessed woman, who had a crush on the Chicago Cubs first baseman Eddie Waitkus. Eddie was one of the stars on the Chicago Cubs team and was currently hitting .306. On August 24, 1947, he became one of only six players since 1920, to hit an inside-the-park grand slam. He was also selected to the 1948 National League All-Star team.

The NaturalRuth had become a Cubs

fan at the age of 16 and attended as many games as she could. So infatuated with Waikus was Ruth that she set a place for him at her table at home for dinner every night even though she had never met him. She turned her bedroom walls into a shrine of Waitkus and even placed his photo under her pillow at night while sleeping. When she found out that Eddie Waitkus was of Lithuanian descent, she started taking classes on how to speak the language. Her actions were also the inspiration behind the creation of the 1952 book entitled The Natural, written by Bernard Malamud. A movie by the same name was later released in 1984. The star studded cast of this movie included Robert Redford, Glenn Close, Robert Duval, Wilfred Brimley, and Barbara Hershey, who played Ruth Steinhagen. Robert Redford played the real-life character of Waikus, but used the name Roy Hobbs in the movie.

A deadly plotIn December of the 1948 season, 29-year-old

Eddie Waitkus was traded by the Cubs to the Philadelphia Phillies. Ruth was so upset, she decided to kill Waitkus. On June 14, 1949, when the Phillies came to Wrigley to play the Cubs, Ruth had her chance. Steinhagen used the name Ruth Ann Burns, an alias of a former high-school classmate of Eddie’s, and checked into the Edgewater Beach Hotel, where the Phillies were staying. She then left Waitkus a note at the front desk. She invited Eddie to her room. The note said, “We’re not acquainted, but I have something of importance to speak to you about.” Eddie showed up at her room, #1297, and she answered the door. Since he did not recognize her, she stated that her friend wanted to see him, but was gone and would be back in just a minute. He took a seat as she walked to a nearby closet. Ruth then returned with a .22 caliber rifle and said, “I have a surprise for you. If I can’t have you, nobody else can,” and shot him in the chest below his heart. Steinhagen then called the front desk and reported the shooting. If she had not made that phone call, Waitkus would have bled to death. Then she kneeled by his side and held his head in her arms, until the authorities came. After she had been arrested, she told the psychiatrist that she

had dreamed many times of killing Eddie Waitkus, because he had left Chicago to play for Philadelphia. Waitkus nearly died several times while on the operating table, before the bullet could be removed. It had just missed his heart. She continued to write him letters from prison and even had his picture taped on

the wall of her cell. The judge determined she was legally insane and committed her to a prison with a mental hospital. She was diagnosed as being schizophrenic and received shock treatments. Interestingly, she was declared sane three years later and released.

The aftermathEddie Waitkus survived the

shooting as Roy Hobbs (Robert Redford) did in the movie, but was not able to play in the 1949 All-Star Game even though he had been selected. He returned to the Philadelphia Phillies and helped propel that team (known as “The Wiz Kids”) to the 1950 National League pennant and secured a spot in the World Series against the New York Yankees. Ruth Steinhagen moved into her sister’s house in Chicago and took a job where she worked in an office for 35 years without anyone putting things together. She made every effort to conceal her identity, refusing to answer the door or

her telephone. She lived in the shadows and never divulged where she had worked.

Eddie Waitkus decided not to press charges in 1952, after Ruth was released. Eddie later became withdrawn, and suspicious of others. He began to drink excessive amounts of alcohol and suffered a failed marriage. Eddie Waitkus eventually suffered a nervous breakdown because of the shooting and died at the age of 53, on September 16, 1973, eleven years before the movie was released. So, the question for me becomes as follows. Ruth Steinhagen was 55-years-old and alive when the movie The Natural was released in 1984. Did she know about the movie and did she know it was about her?

Or the behavior of anyone in a position of leadership: parent, teacher, sports official, sports reporter? How does one learn “boundaries”? Images of head coach Mike Rice conducting basketball practice at Rutgers University left no doubt his behavior was detestable.

That practice session took place several months ago and was the cause of closed-door discussions and mild discipline by the university. But recently the video was released and went viral on the internet; if you’re a sports fan you’ve probably seen it. It features Rice violently cursing at his players, throwing basketballs at their heads and feet and being viciously demeaning. All in the name of-get this-- “motivating” them to do better. Be aware that in today’s world everything can go viral!

Rice has since been fired by Rutgers University and the athletic director, who had suspended and fined Rice when the behavior was first discovered, has now resigned. Others are calling for the university president to step down. Do such firings help change behavior? Granted, there is no excuse for this type of behavior in coaching, teaching, or parenting. But if you think physical abuse of others is a new motivational tool, you got another think coming. Coaches have for years used physical means to motivate their players, though perhaps not to the extent Rice did. Was it the right thing to do? Only if you believe humiliation should be used as a measurement of success.

Motivation comes from within. Worthy coaches, teachers, or parents inspire others through their words and actions. Walk your talk! As we wrote in “It’s the Will, Not the Skill”: “Excellence is good, exemplary is better”! If your goal is to teach for better performance, then we believe coaching from the “inside-out” is the way to do it. It’s one thing to avoid abhorrent examples such as Rice’s; but better to observe positive models and say “that’s the way I want to do it”.

There’s little argument about the fate of Rutgers’ former basketball coach Mike Rice: he had to go. A large majority of those who took part in a recent Monmouth University/Asbury Park Press poll viewed his firing as an appropriate outcome to his behavior…But not all.

Twelve percent said Rice should not have been fired after a video surfaced showing Rice physically abusing players and calling them gay slurs and other names and 6 percent were unsure,

Special to the Island Moon

leaving 82 percent of respondents agreeing with the decision to terminate Rice.

And six percent of those polled found that Rice’s behavior was acceptable, while 93 percent said it was not.

Most also were not surprised that it occurred.

“While the public disapproved, they didn’t think it was all that uncommon in college-level sports,” said Patrick Murray, director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute.

Fifty-two percent of those polled believe it is either very common or fairly common for this type of behavior to take place in college sports with 46 percent saying it is either not too or not at all common.

The poll shows that the New Jersey public by and large agreed with the administrative moves taken after both the incident and the delay in firing Rice.

A majority – 56 percent – said Athletic Director Tim Pernetti, who at first defended his decision not to initially fire Rice, should have resigned, while 35 percent said it was unnecessary. Fifty-one percent of those polled said Rutgers President Robert Barchi should not have to give up his post while 36 percent believe he should step down because of the delay in dealing with Rice.

The poll was conducted by phone, with 806 New Jersey adults taking part from April 11 to 14.

The controversy did not put much of a dent in Rutgers’ reputation on the whole as a university.

Not many participants said it changed the way they perceive Rutgers. Only 6 percent of those said they would “actively discourage” a high school senior from attending Rutgers because of the incident.

The poll also cast light on how Garden State residents feel about sports at Rutgers. Forty-four percent of those polled say Rutgers puts the appropriate amount of emphasis on sports compared to 31 percent who maintain that it places too much emphasis on its athletic programs.

StateLegislative Update

An Update on the Desalination Study Bill and Other Bills to Watch

Over the past month or so of articles, I have been outlining bills which have been filed during the 83rd Texas Legislative Session. Members and their staff have been working on drafting and filing bills in the House and the Senate for the past several months leading up to the March 8th deadline. March 8th represented the 60th day of the Legislative Session and the final day to file bills in both the Texas House and the Texas Senate.

I have filed House Concurrent Resolution 59, which calls on the lieutenant governor and the speaker of the House of Representatives to provide for a joint interim legislative study regarding seawater desalination on the Texas coast. HCR 59 is being expanded to include the whole State of Texas. We will be studying this important issue. We will keep you posted on its development.

As of March 8th, 5,944 bills, joint resolutions, and concurrent resolutions have been filed with the Chief Clerk of the House and the Secretary of the Senate’s respective offices. Below is a selection of those House bills which have been filed to-date:

• HB 2010 is relating a career path initiative for public school students that includes career path guidance for students in certain grade levels, additional high school graduation programs, and a requirement for a minimum number of school counselors at certain schools.

• HB 2029 addresses the eligibility requirements for electrician licenses issued to applicants with military service.

• HB 2036 is relating to the creation of a commission to prepare for the celebration of the state’s bicentennial.

• HB 2048 is concerning the establishment of the Texas Rural Development Fund and to the establishment, operation, and funding of certain programs for rural economic development.

• HB 2054 relates to certain rights of a motor vehicle manufacturer or distributor concerning a proposed transfer of ownership of a dealership.

• HB 2103 addresses education research centers and the sharing of educational data between state agencies; redesignating certain fees as charges.

Below is a selection of the Senate bills which have been filed to-date:

• SB 1021 is relating access to certain stored communications of a provider of an electronic

communications service or remote computing service in this state pursuant to a warrant issued in another state.

• SB 1052 relates to search warrants issued in this state and other states for certain customer

data, communications, and other information held in electronic storage in this state and other states by providers of electronic communications services and remote computing services.

• SB 1054 is related the vaccination against bacterial meningitis of public school students and of certain entering students at public and private or independent institutions of higher education.

• SB 1057 is relating to information about private health care insurance coverage and the health insurance exchange for individuals applying for certain Department of State Health Services health or mental health benefits, services, and assistance.

• SB 1061 addresses the parking privileges of disabled veterans on the property of institutions of higher education.

• SB 1088 deals with warrants issued to obtain location information from wireless communications devices.

• SB 1102 is relating to the appointment of a state cybersecurity coordinator.

The filed bills for the 83rd (R) legislative session are available for the public to view at www.capitol.state.tx.us.

If you have questions or comments regarding any of the filed bills mentioned in this article, please do not hesitate to call my Capitol or District Office. As always, my offices are available at any time to assist with questions, concerns or comments (Capitol Office, 512-463-0672; District Office, 361-949-4603).

How I spent my weekend…It was another eventful week here on our little

sandbar. I started the weekend at the Tarpon Ice House for Carol Elliott’s happy hour gig. Elliott’s vast inventory of music is always fun. She jumped in the way-back machine and treated us to some stuff she hadn’t done in a while. Her version of the Shake Russell song,

You’ve Got a Lover, particularly blew me away. So did her original a capella song, Sergeant York. I’m always amazed at that gal’s voice… what range. And she had a couple of guests to sit in: Father James Derkits from our Trinity By the Sea Episcopal Church graced us with an original composition that came to him while visiting Big Bend State Park, and his priest friend from Austin, Justin Stewart held the audience spellbound. After Elliott’s show,

we ran over to Patsy Jones Amphitheater at Robert’s Point Park to catch the last set of The One’s as they kicked off Port A Parks and Rec Department’s Sunset Sounds Concert Series. I love this event. It’s family friendly, “bring your own lawn chair and ice chest,” right by the ferry landing. Total Port A charm. These shows occur once a month through the summer and I’ll keep you posted. Later Friday night I caught a set from Southern country-rockers, Charlie Hagar and the Captain Legendary Band (Baton Rogue, LA) who were at the Back Porch. These guys are loaded with mostly original material and when requested to play a cover, only came up with a Waylon Jennings number. You gotta love that! These guys are gritty and bow to no one.

And then…Saturday started early with Three Way Street

playing the big 67th Anniversary celebration of Shorty’s Place. They started the party in the afternoon which worked well with the benefit for our pal, James Hayes, over at Bernie’s. James has been battling cancer and the community came together with some much needed financial help. Stay strong brother! On Saturday night I went by the Porch just in time to catch an amazing rendition of the song, Seven Bridges Road, by the big ten piece party band Cruise

Control (Corpus Christi). I’ve always thought these guys had some amazing harmonies but I was completely blown away listening to these voices work together on that song. They’ll be back at the Porch over Memorial Day Weekend.

And after that…On Sunday, I again started

early. Uel Jackson has been playing the Back Porch on Sunday’s from 3-6. I started off there and then moved to Shorty’s for the Roy Cox memorial. Some of Roy’s old musician friends had come in from out of town and treated us to some great music… as did some of the locals who knew and played with Roy for years. Mike Williams played a few with Roy Hodges on violin and Kit Gutherz on tuba. Sky Malone came down from Padre to lend his talents. Tony Sceracene, Jason Maddox & Carrie Denniston made the trek from Swinney Switch and really made the day. Sceracene (electric lead guitar) and Maddox (acoustic guitar and original vocals) are extra talented. I was totally impressed. Later the memorial spilled over to the open jam at the Ice House. It was historic. Everyone got into the act and it sounded like we’d all played together for years. Uel Jackson did a great job of keeping the music rolling. For me, the highlight of the evening was when Dennis Sullivan played his spot-on cover of the Neil Young song, Harvest Moon. I’d never noticed it before but there was a background swishing sound during the course of the song. Dennis’ wife Marilyn Sullivan put a mic on the

house broom and played along like a champ. I don’t know how, but the Sunday jams at the Ice House keep getting better every week. We are indeed surrounded by a world of talent.

DO NOT MISS LISTFinishing out April…

I’ll run down the last two weeks of April for you. The duo, Moon Light Social (Austin, TX) will play the Back Porch on Friday, April 19. They are produced by Asleep at the Wheel frontman, Ray Benson, and have been turning a lot of heads. On Saturday, April 20th, the all female bluegrass outfit from Boston, Della Mae, will play the Porch. I have been looking forward to this show for weeks. Their fiddle player is a two-time National Fiddle Champion and this band literally plays all over the world having recently returned from a 42 day trip of Central Asia (Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan) as

part of a State Department exchange. Also on the 20th, Lela Caldwell’s one woman electronic music and laser show will light up Shorty’s and the Port A Airport will host an open house with Hy Eddleman and others. On Thursday, April 25th, the internationally acclaimed Gypsy Kings will play Concrete Street. I saw them once in San Antonio and can tell you this is one not to miss. The two principal members of this band are brothers who were the offspring of Spanish gypsy families that fled to France to escape Spain’s Civil War. They grew up roaming the south of France, working harvests and making music.  On Friday, April 26th, SandFest 2013 begins its three day weekend on the beach in Port A. Expect 100,000 people to invade our little island for this world-class sand sculpting competition. The music tent will host such

local acts as The Ones, Raeanne & the Ride, Cord Carpenter, Flatbroke, Rich Lockhart & The Palipha Starry Band. Expect the mother of all traffic jams. Also on the 26th, the Parrothead friendly Sand Band will play the Tarpon Ice House; blues maestro J.T. Coldfire (Austin,

TX) will play Giggity’s; local roadhouse heroes, Ray T & the City Crew, will play the Flat’s; and red hot and rockin’ Brit pop meets Westside San Antonio, The Krayolas, will play the Back Porch. My vote here goes to the Krayolas… I love their spiffy outfits. On Saturday, April 27th, Americana veteran¸ Houston Marchman plays the Porch; blues and classic rockers, the Rich Lockhart Band plays Giggity’s; scalding Latin funk rockers, Vallejo (Austin, TX) plays the Executive Surf Club; and local troubadour, Jered Wolfjaw Clark plays the Upper Deck.

A quick glance at May…Highlights for May (more details as the weeks

progress): Larry Joe Taylor, Thomas Michael Riley, Will Owen Gage, Ryan Bingham, Austin Heat, Samantha Aiken, W.C. Clark, Antone & the All Stars, Get Off the Lawn, Lost Fabulocos, The Tarpon Music Bash, Jesse Dayton, Rubin Limas, The Songwriter Showcase, The Dynamics Reunion, Gary P. Nunn, Todd Dorn, Hold Fast Fables, Buster Jiggs, Mandy Rowden, Robert Earl Keen, Lyle Lovett, Mike Milligan & the Altar Boys, Freddy Steady Krc and Cam King. That ought to get your attention.

And that’s the truth!
