As we were loading the newspapers for delivery last week Winter returned. A howl blew in from the north and pretty soon a smattering of rain followed. “Winter’s back!” someone yelled, and sure enough it was; for about twenty four hours. It sang through the sailboat lines and smashed the north side of the palm trees flat and by Friday afternoon it was gone; but before it left it created a very rare event on our Island, but not that rare as it turned out because it happened again this Wednesday. Global Cooling? Bird invasion Islander Jonathan Wood called to tell us that when the cold front blew through there happened to be huge flocks of migrating birds coming from the Yucatan who were about one hundred miles out over the Gulf of Mexico and when the cloud wall hit they had to head for land. Since there are no thermals over water for the birds to use to gain altitude by the time they made landfall on The Island they were tired and flying low. Jonathan said the mixed group included Peregrine Falcons, Red and White tailed hawks, Night Hawks, hummingbirds, and many other species. More than 100 hawks were seen in one single group. “I’ve been working with birds for fifty years,” Jonathan said, “I’ve never seen anything like it.” The event lasted for about 40 minutes and then the birds moved on. But when they left, they left behind an experience that a group of bird watchers who were just coming over the JFK Causeway will never forget. Beach patrol in Kleberg We’ve had several people call this week to tell us about Border Patrol officers working the Kleberg Beach on four-wheelers. They park their trucks and trailers on the north end of PINS at the sticks and run north on the beach. We’re not sure what they’re after but officers of any kind on Kleberg Beach are rare as whale sightings. Fourth of July Fireworks Jerry Watkins is making some progress in his quest to raise the last of the $15,000 needed to put on a Big Bang fireworks show on Padre Island. The permits are in place, everyone is making plans…but before you start ordering hors d’oeuvres for the Fireworks Party on the Deck help out any way you can to raise the last $6500 Jerry needs to put some real Fire in the Sky on the Fourth of July. Come on Islanders we’re coming down to the wire here. Contact Jerry at 331-7273 or e-mail him at jdwatkins@ satx.rr.com and let’s make this happen. Little Chapel on the Dunes In Port Aransas there is a little chapel built back in the 1930’s which has become an iconic piece of local interest. The most oft asked question of the Little Chapel on the Dunes is who painted the exquisite and bold murals inside it. Well, we’re glad you asked. It was two guys who at the time were attending Gregory Portland High School who both have gone on to very successful careers as artists. Their names are John Cobb and Glen Francis and both, along with artist Wade Koniakowsky, will be in town this weekend for an exhibit at the Felder Gallery in Port Aransas. The event was put together by gallery owner Robbie Felder and we’re looking forward to seeing it. Moon writer Brent Roark is putting together a comprehensive story on the chapel for a future issue. The event is part of a big SandFest weekend in Port Aransas where the best sand sculptors in the world gather to display their talent. Get there early to avoid the crowds but don’t miss it; it’s sort of like Spring Break but for the locals and marks the beginning of the beach season. Kemp’s ridley Nesting has BegunBy Donna J. Shaver, Ph.D.

Chief, Division of Sea Turtle Science and Recovery

National Park Service Padre Island National Seashore

[email protected]

The 2013 Kemp’s ridley sea turtle nesting season

has begun. For the third year in a row, Padre Island National Seashore Biological Technician Shauna Ertolacci found the first nest of the year documented at the park. During 2011 and 2012 that was also the first nest found in the state. However, this year a turtle patroller located the first Texas nester on South Padre Island.

Kemp’s ridley is the most endangered sea turtle species in the world. For more than three decades, multi-agency efforts have been underway to help recover this species and form a secondary nesting colony of this native species at the National Seashore. Padre Island National Seashore is the most important Kemp’s ridley nesting beach in the U.S. for this species, with more Kemp’s ridley nests documented at the National Seashore than at any other location in the U.S.

We want to find Kemp’s ridley turtles that nest here and their nests, so that we can document them and protect them from human related and natural threats. Hundreds of people have been trained to aid with nesting detection efforts on the Texas coast, from the Bolivar Peninsula to Boca Chica Beach, and turtle patrols are underway.

So far this year (through April 22), five Kemp’s ridley nests have been documented on the Texas coast. The five were found on Thursday April 18, a few hours before and a few hours after the passage of the cold front. Kemp’s ridleys often nest on windy days, especially during north winds and in association with the passage of fronts. All five nests were found in the southern part of the state, where near-shore waters were the warmest. The five nests included two found at the southern end of Padre Island National Seashore, two on South Padre Island, and one on Boca Chica Beach. The nesting season began a bit earlier last year than it did this year. In fact, by April 22 last year, 40 nests had already been found in the state. However, near-shore waters have been a bit cool. As waters continue to warm in the coming days, nesting should increase and begin further north in the state.

Like last year, we plan to affix satellite transmitters to 10 of the turtles found nesting at the northern end of the National Seashore this year. After they are done laying eggs and covering the nest, the females will be transported to our Turtle Laboratory for attachment of a satellite transmitter. You will be able to view their movements on www.seaturtle.org. After we begin deploying transmitters, go to the satellite tracking link and look for the Padre Island National Seashore Kemp’s Ridley Tracking Program 2013. Six transmitters that we put out on nesting females in past years are still transmitting. This includes four from 2012 that can be viewed on www.seaturtle.org at the link for the 2012 program, and two from 2011 that can be viewed on the link for the 2011 program.

Eggs from most nests found at the National Seashore and northward on the Texas coast will be collected and brought to our Incubation Facility for protected care. Eggs from some of the nests found at the southern end of the park will be brought to a protective screen enclosure called a corral. Eggs from South Padre Island and Boca Chica Beach are brought to a corral

on South Padre Island. Eggs from the five nests found on April 18 were brought to these corrals.

Eggs are closely cared for at the Incubation Facility and in the corrals. When the hatchlings are fully emerged from their eggshells we will release them on the beach and protect them during release. Each year, we hold 20-30 hatchling releases at the National Seashore

that are open to the public. In 2012, collectively more than 10,000 people attended these releases. As eggs are placed into the incubation facility, the projected hatchling release dates for the eggs from each nest will be placed on the National Seashore website at www.nps.gov/pais. When the eggs begin to hatch we are able to more closely pinpoint when the release will occur. We then place the latest information about the releases on our recorded Hatchling Hotline (tel. 361-949-7163) and our Facebook page titled Padre Island NS Division of Sea Turtle Science & Recovery.

It typically only takes about 45 minutes for Kemp’s ridleys to nest, and signs of nesting disappear quickly. Although turtle patrollers are canvasing Gulf beaches in the state, this is a very large area to cover. Sometimes nesters come in soon after patrollers have passed by and beachgoers are the first on the scene. Each year, several nests are located by beachgoers and other people that work on the beach, especially in developed areas of the Texas coast. You can help with recovery efforts for this species by watching for nesting while you are on the beach and immediately reporting it to a passing turtle patroller or to me by calling 361-949-8173, ext. 226.

You can learn more about what to do if you see a nesting turtle by visiting the Padre Island National Seashore website at www.nps.gov/pais. The website also contains information on nest totals in Texas and our hatchling releases. We also post updates about nesting and hatchling releases (including photos and video clips) on our Facebook page (titled Padre Island NS Division of Sea Turtle Science & Recovery). My dog Ridley helps find difficult-to-locate nests and has a Facebook page named Ridley Ranger. He has had more media coverage over the last few months that you can read about it on his page. “Like” these two pages to receive our updates.

Rare White Great Blue Heron Hatches Even Rarer

White Chick

The vast majority of Great Blue Herons (GBH) in Texas are a dark mix of grays, blues, browns and a bit of white. There are however a few documented all white Great Blue Herons. These white GBH will usually breed with the readily available dark birds, which possess the more dominant dark gene, and typically produce dark chicks.

Capt. Tommy Moore, a local tour boat operator that takes birding enthusiasts into the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge to see the endangered Whooping Cranes, has been following this bird over the years. “White Great Blue Herons are fairly common in the Florida Keys but not here in Texas. This bird has been nesting on various rookery islands around here each spring for a long time, but this is the first time she has had a white chick” says Moore. “She is always fun to see around the bays and our clients always ask about her so we are really excited about this unique occurrence”.

While the bird nests in a remote area called the “Second Chain of Islands” on the south end of San Antonio Bay approximately 16 miles North of Rockport-Fulton, Moore’s spring rookery trips aboard the SKIMMER to see the nesting Herons, Egrets, Terns, Gulls, Roseate Spoonbills, American Oystercatchers, and many others will get you a glimpse of these rare Great Blue Herons.

Stuff I Heard on the Islandby Dale Rankin

Last weekend was a good one here on our Island. We started early Saturday at the seawall where we did the Island Moon Newspaper ArtWalk &

Beach Market. It was the first one we’ve done and it was a success and a lot of fun. My friends Steve Smart and Sky Malone came out and played music and with the help of Katherine Pierce things went off without a hitch. We had a chance to see dozens of friends – many of whom we had not met before. We wandered in and out of the Sand Bar and up and down the seawall on both Saturday and Sunday and look forward to doing it again on the May 11-12 weekend.

Market confusion

There is some confusion that I should address about the name. About a year ago we began doing the Island Moon Market together with some other people and – let’s just say we had a disagreement and leave it at that. We asked them to stop using our name and they have refused and so far the courts have refused to make them stop. They offered to change the name if we gave them $10,000. We declined their generous offer. So just for the record the Island Moon Market that will go on down there this weekend does have our name on it but we have nothing to do with it. We would like them to stop using our name, but alas, at this point we have not been able to make them stop.

As a result every time they put their signs up our phone starts to ring and we have to field questions about something we have nothing to do with. They charge vendors to go to their market and we don’t. We see a market on the seawall as something that is good for The Island and we think it will be the best it can be only if area artists and artisans can participate for free.

That’s what we are doing; so if you wish to take part in a market on the seawall and someone asks you to pay them for it – it’s not us and it is not our market.

Fly in

Next we headed over to Mustang Beach Airport in Port A where Jason and Lisa Towns organized a fly-in which was a huge success. On the weekends they run the skydiving operation over there which has become a great addition to the Port A portfolio. Last weekend the runways were packed with planes that flew in from all over the state and they served 125 pounds of shrimp and then everyone flew home. That’s what the flying crowd does.

This was where I encountered the first Island Phrase of the Day when someone asked the quite reasonable question, “Why is it called Deep Fried Catfish? Is it because catfish live on the bottom or because it’s fried at the bottom of the pan?”

I don’t know.

Onward and upward

Then it was on to the Upper Deck to meet friends for “just a few minutes” before we moved on. Three hours later we ask for our check which was barely twenty dollars since others had been buying without telling us; can’t complain about that.

It was here I heard the second Island Phrase of the Day as I overheard the tail end of a conversation, “Well, I say don’t bother getting married,” a middle-aged fellow opined, “just find a woman you hate and buy her a house…cheaper that way.”

We decide to leave the car and walk to the Back Porch.

Five girls from Massachusetts playing bluegrass

Ronnie had been telling us all week that there would be a great bluegrass band playing at the Back Port on Saturday.

“Five girls from Massachusetts playing bluegrass,” he kept saying. “What could be better than that?” Can’t argue with that. Everywhere we went we were surprised at the number of tourists in town for this time of year. Must be that every uplander that owns a second house on The Island knows that April or October is the best time to come down and so they did.

The place was packed and sure enough those girls could play. It’s pretty rare to see a club band bring the crowd to its feet for an honest to goodness encore but those ladies sure did. They call themselves Della Mae and I’ll leave it to Ronnie to get into the details but it was one of those days when everything just falls together.

It was here I heard the next Island Phrase of the Day when a local business owner was lamenting the difficulty in finding employees, “Everybody has run off to the oil patch,” she said. Yes indeed, many a young fellow is Fording the Eagle these days.

As we headed back south toward home a Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee song came on…

Your mind gets worried when your shoes get thin

I’m gonna leave here runnin’ cause walkin’ is much too slow…

Now this week it’s SandFest…is this a great island or what?

Island Fishing with Joey Farah

This week on the water I’ve seen extreme weather and some extreme fishing as

well. Cold fronts continue to “pepper us with north wind” and move fish and fishermen to alter their game plans on both following good water, bait, and lunar feeding times. Every day when I leave the dock it is something new custom tailored to the weather that day. This as we all know can change, and be quite inaccurate from the detailed weather reports on the nightly news. Balance the use of live bait and lures, and fishing close and far to take advantage of everything we have to offer here in Paradise.

Upper Laguna

The local water conditions around the Upper Lagoon have been amazing. Green water fills the flats every day and calls your name as you commute over the JFK Causeway and around Port A. The tides have been flowing in from the Gulf and with it bringing in lots of small bait. Look under any dock and you will find schools of baby fish. This is a buffet to all mature game fish allowing them to feed at will when it is convenient for them. This is putting the angler at a disadvantage for catching lots of fish at one time. When food is less available the hunt lasts a bit longer, allowing us to find a pattern and put it to use. As it is now when you position yourself in the best spot where quality fish are at many are gorged full from the last lunar feeding. I have been concentrating my efforts on Big Sow Trout during the major and minor feedings through out the day. Targeting these mature fish, we are concentrating on the shallows with top water lures and shallow drifts with live shrimp and popping corks. For the slower parts of the day we are drifting deeper flats of 3ft to 5ft of water with soft plastics and live shrimp under deep corks. The deep edges of the ICW and the deepest parts of the flats have continued to raise the score on our fish boxes with limits and mixed bags of reds, drum, sheep head, and more. A great game plan for the week is to start off with top waters along the Islands and shorelines between Bird Island and Corpus Christi Bay in water with good visibility. Move to the edges of the IntraCoastal Canal when the winds lays down with soft plastics, or fish live shrimp on bottom rigs along the edges. Mid-day and afternoon drifts along the deeper flats of the West side of the Lagoon are paying off every day with a great bite just before sunset. White and pumpkinseed soft plastics along with live shrimp have been on the mark in the late evening.

Down South

Drag has been singing out and the rods have been bent as we have been blessed with some great catches of both Big Trout and heavy mixed boxes of fish. The annual migration of fish into the Baffin Bay Complex has been steady but somewhat blocked from turning into a full

fledged explosion of fish. The stained waters of Baffin Bay have been keeping many trout away from its back water reaches. History shows us that every year in late April and early May we get a big push of fish that travel in to the Back Waters of Baffin. Brown Tide conditions have lessened this and made it tough on fishermen to have confidence in the area with the dark water. The fish are still there but fishermen must concentrate on micro environments that are holding fish. The major rock formations in the mouth of the bay are key in catching fish on shrimp and popping corks right now. The edges of the drop-offs along the South Shoreline have been good for single man wades covering lots of ground with a quiet attack. The top water game is your best bet with some great Trophy Trout coming to our hands for anglers willing to ZONE OUT and stick with the top water bite. Bad water puts the vibration and noise factor in our favor. Bright colors in both plastics and top waters have been the best for obvious reasons. The Land Cut has given up some fish of a lifetime to many these last few weeks, but big trout are not around every corner. North winds spell good catching for black drum, sheep head, whiting, along with flounder and reds too. Good Southeast flow will put green water in the Cut and move the trout into feeding. A few times there has been some unbelievable days just before these fronts when we and other boats are bringing 5 to 10 trout over the 6 to 9 pound range in a day. The fishing is going to peak out here for the next two months so plan your trip with customers, family, and friends so you can build memories of a lifetime.

Port A Buzz

Port Aransas has been a buzz with good fishing and easy access. The Jetties have been holding some big trout and plenty of action for both anglers with bait and lures. First light trout action has and is always good in April and May. Start of with small top waters along the edges of the rocks in the channel and up shallow on the beach side. Soft plastics under a Mauler will guarantee trout, reds, or something at first light. The Reds are out deep pulling over rods baited with live finger mullet. The sharks are still thick for those looking for some hard fighting fun. The Shad should start filling the bay over in Redfish Bay and the experienced Old Timers hit the sand hole with them every year. They all have their stories of Monster Trout on cut shad up shallow this time of year. The trout are up and down the edge of the Shrimp Boat Channel along with sheep head and a lot of small flounder for fishermen with live bait.

We should remain flexible in our efforts and pursuits of fish right now. The time for searching for quality is at hand and putting forth your best fishing during the major feeding times is easy if you research the lunar feeding periods. These fronts are weaning fast and those sunny hot days of summer are not too far away. Plan your summer trips now and stay pumped up on fishing and Adventures along the Backwaters of

Felder Gallery Hosting International ArtistsArtist who painted mural at Little Chapel on the DunesBy Brent Rourk

Art lovers have a great opportunity this Saturday evening at the Felder Gallery in Port Aransas when three fabulous artists will reunite for the first time in many years. John Cobb, Wade Koniakowsky and Glenn Francis will show some of their current work and be available at a reception from 5 to 9 P.M.

The reception will be a fortunate opportunity for locals to view amazing work and learn more about what these fabulous artists have been creating for the past few decades. Stephanie Nash, a talented harpist with an impressive resume, will perform during the reception.

John Cobb is known as the artist who painted the inside of The Little Chapel on the Dunes years ago and who has since updated his frescos there, infusing the chapel with delightfully colorful images of Bible stories. Wade Koniakowsky has created riveting Polynesian dreamscapes and images that encourage the viewer to experience Pacific cultures. The paintings of Glenn Francis masterfully combine color, light, perspective and texture to invite the viewer to enter the image.

Felder Gallery has been a popular art gallery for several years. Linda and Larry Felder acquired the gallery in 2009 and moved it from Rockport to Port Aransas. The gallery is known to represent local, regional, and national artists, offering, as their mission statement outlines, high quality original works and a limited selection of fine art reproductions.

Visitors to the annual SandFest in Port Aransas this weekend will have many unique art galleries and stores to peruse and the usual wide selection of excellent restaurants. The reception at Felder Gallery is one not to miss. Felder Gallery is located at 1726 Highway 361 in Port Aransas.

You can contact Linda and Larry Felder at 361-749-2388 or at www.feldergallery.com

The Island Moon Newspaper will be running a feature article spanning a few issues on The Little Chapel on the Dunes, featuring some of the work of artist John Cobb. If you have not had a chance to view the inside of the Little Chapel on the Dunes in Port Aransas, then call the Port Aransas Museum and request a free tour through board member and tour guide Pepper Pendzinski at 361-749-3800.

That logjam was resolved last Friday when City Manager Ron Olson directed the city engineering staff to proceed with the detail design of the bridge while awaiting the ruling from TxDot on permitting, which is expected within the next month and will likely be followed by a public hearing.

Olson’s move clears the way for work on the canals to begin much earlier.

Under his existing permits developer Paul Schexnailder must build water exchange culverts under the roadway connecting the new canal on the west side of the road to Lake Padre on the east. However, last year the Corpus Christi City Council approved the use of $8.1 million in bond money to instead replace the culverts with the bridge which would allow for boats to pass underneath as well as pedestrian and golf cart paths.

Bridge continued from A1

The current design would allow for water passage through a six-foot deep channel and would include walking and cart paths on each side along with about a 14-foot clearance from water level to the bridge for boat passage. It would take about one year to complete and during most of that time traffic on SPID would be reduced to one lane each way

As the city moves forward with the final design of the bridge all required permit work is proceeding on the IslandWalk Canal.

Islander and sometimes Moon contributor Arlan Andrews has a cover story on the July/August issue of Analog Science Fiction and Fact Magazine. We asked Arlan to give us a synopsis of what the story is about about, and here it is…

“The cover shows one of The People, Reader Thess, astride his “two-leg”, observing a miles-high glacier in the distance, part of his family business of finding and selling ice.

Thess carves his thoughts and business notes on a small cylindrical totem, and Reads the totems by touch alone, the way his people have done since ancient times.

And then somebody finds a frozen God in the ice...

Meet Bella!!

This beautiful girl was extremely emaciated when we rescued her. She was living outside 24/7 in an unfenced yard on a very busy street. When it was too cold or hot outside, she would seek shelter underneath their house. Every time we would visit her, there was not a food or water bowl anywhere in the yard even though we provided bowls and food. This girl was so loyal to the family that she stayed even though she was starving, even when she could easily have just walked away from their property. There are 3 children at that home ranging in age from 4-12 and Bella was wonderful with them, never jumping up on them, but always happy to play and get some attention...what little attention they would give her was enough to keep her there.

We placed her into a wonderful foster home on the island in December and they decided to adopt her, but recently, there have been issues between Bella and her doggie-brother. Bella, being the stronger of the two, has hurt her brother. As much as they love her, the couple has asked us to rehome her.

Bella is fully vaccinated and spayed. We are looking for a home where Bella can be an only dog. That doesn’t mean that she’s not a good girl. She is the sweetest, most appreciative girl you can meet. She is loving, smart and calm...and she gives wonderful doggie kisses. She will look up at you with eyes that will melt your heart. Bella’s adoption fee is $75. If you are interested in fostering or adopting Bella, please email us at [email protected] and request an application.

We will be posting additional pictures of Bella on our Facebook page. Search ‘Guardians Rescue’ on Facebook. Thank you for reading about our sweet, beautiful Bella!

Mystery Person of the Week

Duncan Found A Home!

Jan and Moon Staff;

Duncan has found a wonderful home! Duncan’s flyer was spotted at Dr. Watson’s office in Flour Bluff by a young couple. They have a 3 year old male black lab mix with a lot of energy and a very good nature. They wanted a friend for their dog “Socks”. Duncan fit the bill perfectly and within 15 minutes they were the best of friends.

Duncan now has a fenced yard with grass and a pool! (nicer than what we sit in; sand and sand burrs) We are very happy for him and miss him very much; but I think he has a forever home now. It has been a week and all we are hearing is how well he is doing.

We did receive quite a few phone calls for him from your paper but they came in to late. So; thank you again for your help and putting his mug out there.

Thank you all so much for your help and support. Maybe someday in this little town we won’t have to do this anymore; yeah right!

My name is Duncan.  I am a 1.5 year old Mastiff/Ridgeback mix.  Some of you may remember my story from a few weeks ago.  I am still looking for a loving home to call my own. I was found on Leopard Street standing in the middle of the road waiting to be hit.  For the past seven weeks I have been recovering with some folks who are fostering me on their own.

So far I have beaten the flea/tick issue with oatmeal baths, I have gone from 47 lbs. to 67 lbs. and I will be around 75 lbs. when I am done.  My beautiful red coat has come back to life, I have received all of my shots, I am heartworms negative, I am micro chipped and neutered.  I really like people, I like other dogs, I am attending the Pooch Pad for some playtime, socialization, and some training.  I love to be petted and I will lean against you for as long as you want to pet me. I am good with children.  I need some training on the basics because no‐one has ever done this for me.  I am not a big fan of riding in cars/trucks yet; I tend to get a little motion sick in the back.  I do fine in the front seat.  I am working on this as much as I can.

FireIsland Moon,

I’d like to take a moment to praise some people, console some people, and absolutely berate some people.

There is no answer yet as to what lead up to the events of April and the house fire on Gunwale Dr. I’m sure investigators are working with insurance companies and the owners to determine the root cause. That being said I was awakened at about 8:15 or so to a very loud and persistent knocking on my door. I got up and answered it and there was a police officer running back from the house already engulfed in flames asking if I knew if anyone was in the house. I said I wasn’t sure but that I knew a couple lived their with what I thought were multiple dogs and a cat. The cat by the way used to come and go as it pleased in and out of the garage. It would even venture over to my house and say hi from time to time. In any case fire crews began showing up and engaging the fire with water and foam. Given their due diligence they saved most of the structure of the house. They were organized, precise, and professional. I wish I could say the same for the cat. My gut wrenched and twisted into knots as I watched helplessly while they performed CPRr on the cat for what was the better part of 10 minutes. They could have easily cast aside the animal and moved on. Instead they took the time to try and save the cat. It was not to be. Kitty had reached the last of its 9 lives.

This brings me to the home owners. I did not know them. I still don’t. I mean sure I wave at them and smile but had never taken the time to get to know them. Come to think of it I only know one family on my street. That’s my fault. I guess I just keep to myself. In this case I was thrust into the lives of people I did not know giving information for which I thought was correct to people that were taking said info for fact. Get to know your neighbors. Make it a point to let at least one neighbor know when you are headed in case something like this happens. I cannot imagine how the ride back to the island must have been for my neighbors. I’ve played the scenario over and over in my head and come to the same conclusion. It must have sucked! I do wish my neighbors the very best and intend to tell them as such when I see them next. Not sure when that will be.

I HAVE however seen my fair share of people on my street that do not belong there. Everything from random joggers to old f----in golf carts that stop and gawk at the house. Why? What could you possibly get out of seeing someone else’s misery? It’s like a car wreck. We are programmed for some reason to want to stop and see blood and guts. I’ll never understand humanity. Yes a house burned, a life was lost, the owners are in mourning. What more do you sick people want? How about instead of worrying about what someone else is going through you worry about your own misery for a change.

Make a change in your life before you try to make a change in others. Stop driving down my street to “get a look”. I don’t drive down your street. Leave Gunwale Dr. alone for a change. Let the family cope and heal. If I happen to catch one more set of old men drinking beer from a golf cart while sitting in front of the house playing fire investigator I’m getting out the hose with my brass fireman’s nozzle. I can assure you it reaches across the street!

StatesMoon,

Governors of 35 states have filed suit against the Federal Government for imposing unlawful burdens upon them. It only takes 38 (of the 50) States to convene a Constitutional Convention.

This is an idea that we should address. For too long we have been too complacent about the workings of Congress. Many citizens had no idea that members of Congress could retire with the same pay after only one term, that they specifically exempted themselves from many of the laws they have passed (such as being exempt from any fear of prosecution for sexual harassment) while ordinary citizens must live under those laws. The latest is to exempt themselves from the Healthcare Reform that passed ... in all of its forms. Somehow, that doesn’t seem logical. We do not have an elite that is above the law. I truly don’t care if they are Democrat, Republican, Independent or whatever . The self-serving must stop.

If each person that receives this will forward it on to 15 people, in three days, most people in The United States of America will have the message. This is one proposal that really should be passed around. (Editor’s Note: Please don’t do that, we’ve got you covered.)

Proposed 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution: “Congress shall make no law that applies to the citizens of the United States that does not apply equally to the Senators and/or Representatives; and, Congress shall make no law that applies to the Senators and/or Representatives that does not apply equally to the citizens of the United States ...” You are one of my 15.

RileyDear Riley P.Dog,

I’ve had a crush on you for awhile and, after meeting your mom at the Island Moon Art Walk last weekend, I got the green light to finally write you.

Your diet struggles are similar to mine; loose x lbs, which is way too many. After all, happiness is cat food, snacks, lots of belly rubs, lying on my back

airing out the tummy fur, gazing longingly at all the stuff flying and jumping around off the deck, and very importantly, napping.

Once in awhile someone visits and it’s open season for large- eyed gazing deeply into the eyes of the beholder. 91.23% of the time, Bingo, snack time. My percentage improves with each visit. This is the percentage that really counts.

Ray H. at Dr. Kristi’s office has helped me with, ahem, not so much the diet problem, as another un-named one...Let’s just say we love Dr. Cristi’s office, since I feel like I own them, while they unconditionally love me. Fixed the problem, too.

Does this all sound familiar? We have soooo much in common.

Hopefully, we can meet up, say, for happy hour. I’ll provide the snacks.

Meanwhile, high paws to you,

Madeleine Z. Cat

P.S. I’m a 9 year old rescue Siamese who will only exercise while chasing a 2 cent piece of string, but that’s a whole other story...

Madeleine Z. Cat,

Thanks for writing Madeleine. I’m still on a diet but lately I’ve been having pretty good luck working the tourist crowd mostly for potato

chips and sometimes bacon. I like bacon but not diets. My humans are getting better at keeping an eye on me so the pickings for me have been pretty slim. They took me to the beach twice last weekend and I did find what I think might have once been a Cheeto that I ate that made my stomach feel kind of funny.

I live with two cats who run me off my bed a lot and box my ears when I’m asleep but that’s okay because they bring the catfood that I steal when I can and in return I bark when I see a bird trying to dive on them. Last week I saw a dolphin that came up in our canal and I didn’t run away. I used to hide in the closet when I saw them but now they’re my friends. They’re like dogs that swim.

Last week a nice second grade teacher in San Antonio was reading my column to her class and she noticed that the boys in the class were paying close attention but the girls were just looking around. She couldn’t figure it out until she looked on the front page of the paper and saw there was a picture of some Beach Babes of the Week there and that’s what those boys were looking at. I’m, just a dog. I can’t compete with Beach Babes.

Don’t bother chasing a string Madeleine Z. Cat, you can’t eat that unless of course it’s soaked in bacon grease. If you can get your humans to soak your string in bacon grease call me and I’ll come live with you.

Our humans are having a meeting to build us dogs a park on the island. I’m not sure if cats go there. I’m not sure if dogs can go to the meeting about the dog park. I might have to sit outside.

Did I mention I’m on a diet?

Can anyone tell us who this “bad” boy is?

Our Mystery Person of the Week last time was longtime Islander and Moon friend Carl Badalich. Carl lives out on SH 361 near the beach. But before he moved to The Island he attended Copley High School in Copley Township, Ohio, where Carl is a member of the class of 1964 and the Copley Athletic Hall of Fame.

Carl lettered in basketball, football, and track and field. In football he played both offense and defense as a fullback and defensive end; and in track and field where he excelled in shot put and discus. At the 1964 State Meet he tossed the shot 54 feet which still stands as a school record and

finished fourth in the decathlon at the Northeast Ohio Invitational track meet even though it was the first time he ever tried pole vaulting.

He then moved to the University of Akron where he earned seven varsity letters – three in football as a defensive end and four in track as a shot putter.

Carl is our Mystery Person of the Week and we tried to track him down to get a recent photo but Carl is a hard guy to catch…maybe next time.

Tides of the WeekOn the Rocks

By Jay Gardner

John and I closed the bar one summer evening while he was in town, and we headed to

Floyd’s for the obligatory biscuits and sausage gravy, as was custom when he came in town from Austin.

I had a few days off work, and didn’t have anywhere to be the next day, and he was on vacation. “How’s that boat of yours running anyway?” he asked between bites. “Like a champ” I replied, starting to see a wry smile work onto his face. “Got any lights on it?” he further queried. “with this full moon, we don’t need any lights!” I replied, knowing what was in store afterwards.

This was somewhere in the summer of ’00 or ’01, and I had a steady teaching job during the school year at TAMUCC and was working on the M/V Duke during the summer. I basically fished four or five times a week, because I could. I knew the Laguna like the back of my hand, and could literally drive it in the dark while blindfolded with one hand tied behind my back.

Good light at full moon

We dumped the boat somewhere around 3 a.m. and headed out into the night. We had access to a buddy’s fishing cabin, and we headed south across the flats without any running lights on (you can see better with no lights during a full moon) or spotlight (yes, I know it’s completely foolish and dangerous, thanks for the reminder Mom). We jumped the flats and ICWW and pulled up to the pier. We popped in, turned on the radio, and began working on a few more adult beverages while catching up on what was going on in each other’s lives; just enjoying the porch and the beautiful night with a full moon and starlight skies a little south of the town while the rest of the responsible world slept.

After a couple hours, we decided we needed to head back to town and hit the hay. We loaded up the skiff, turned off the radio, and headed back into the darkness. I jumped the flats and headed back into Bluff Landing as we needed to get in and out of there before Harold Yette would show up and receive the day’s batch of shrimp. I made the left turn into the channel and put the course right down the middle of the channel and sat down. John suddenly asked if he could drive the boat for some reason. I just grunted and handed him the wheel and turned around to get the last cold beverage of the trip. I literally turned around for 6.5 seconds, and I turned back around just in time to see a channel

marker dead in the center of our path. “Thud” and then “scrape!” down the bottom of the boat the whole length, scraping gel coat off the whole way.

Mowing the sticks

“What the heck are you doing?!” as I grabbed the wheel back from him. “I take us all the way across the Laguna in the complete dark, let you drive for less than 20 seconds and you mow a stick over instantly?!” John just laughed and laughed and laughed; to this day I have no idea if he did it on purpose, as a joke, or he really couldn’t see. Ah, good times in the skiff…..(authors note; no channel markers were harmed in the production of this story, the stick just bent over and stood right back up after it’s rinse).

Thanks Dad

I was reminded of this story, and many others the other day as I was watching my skiff get pulled down the road. After 20 years of having a boat of my own, I’ve decided to make a change. I’ve sold my skiff and will be using the funds to buy a motor for my dad’s boat. His boat is bigger, and a little nicer, but the trailer is too

unwieldy for him to handle by himself. We’ll be putting it on a lift out on the Island to make it even easier for him to take Mom out and go cruising and fishing.

A little pay-back for the man who took me fishing at a young age, and helped me develop into the person I am today. Thanks Dad, we’ll get you

back on the water soon. And good bye girl, I miss you already. Have fun and be safe with her Jesse.

As for you loyal readers, be careful out there on the water. There will be a vision impaired older gentleman on the Laguna with a new motor blowing across the flats! There is also a young, first-time boat owner in a flats skiff! Another reason I’ll see you On the Rocks! It’s safer! LOL!

Driving and Texting is an Efficient but Messy Way to Commit Suicide

By Dotson [email protected]

Continuing the discussion of driving safely at any age, I wonder how HB 63 progressing, working its way through the maze that is the Texas House of Representatives?

On April 22nd the bill was referred to “Transportation,” whatever that means. In the unlikely event that you have suffered a “Senior Moment,” or just don’t know, the following is for your reading enjoyment.

House Bill 63 bill which would make sending text messages while driving a crime — a measure that Gov. Rick Perry has vetoed in the past — was heard on the House floor a week or so ago.

While some lawmakers and family members of crash victims have argued that such a ban would help save lives, other lawmakers point to studies that indicate bans in other states have not reduced crashes and are difficult to enforce. Perry has called such legislation “a government effort to micromanage the behavior of adults.” But this time there may be enough support among legislators to override a potential veto.

Many bills were filed this session to crack down on texting while driving, but the furthest along is House Bill 63, filed by state Rep. Tom Craddick, R-Midland, which along with Senate Bill 28, by state Sen. Judith Zaffirini, D-Laredo, would make it a misdemeanor to type on a handheld device to send an electronic message while behind the wheel. HB 63 would create a fine of up to $100 for first-time charges, and $200 for repeat offenses.

There are exceptions in the bill for drivers who say they were simply looking up a number or using a cellphone to navigate with GPS technology.

There has been increasing publicity surrounding the problem of “distracted driving” in general and texting while driving in particular. On April 8, the Texas Department of Transportation launched a campaign urging drivers, via a series of public service announcements, to avoid “distracted driving.”

The Texas A&M Transportation Institute found that “almost half of all Texas drivers in 2012 admit to regularly or sometimes talking on the cell phone while driving,” but that “84.9 percent of Texas drivers think driving while talking on a cellphone is a very serious or somewhat serious threat to their personal safety.” Neither group specifically supported the statewide ban.

At hearings and news conferences on the bill, family members of people killed in car accidents caused by texting while driving have urged lawmakers to give law enforcement tools to stop the practice. HB 63 is also known as the Alex Brown Memorial Act, named after a girl who died in a rollover accident on her way to school. She had been sending text messages to several friends. “All it takes is a split second to lose control,” her mother, Jeanne Brown, told lawmakers in January.

In vetoing similar legislation in 2011, Perry said that it was already illegal to use a cellphone in a school zone and that a statewide ban would be an “overreach.”

“We’ll reserve all of our decisions on a bill until it comes to us in its final form,” Perry

spokesman Josh Havens said of the current proposal. He said the governor “believes that while texting while driving is not safe, the way to convince people not to do it is education, not government micromanagement.”

The Legislature, however, can override a veto with a two-thirds vote from each chamber. Legislators cannot override a governor’s veto after the session ends, but the governor has three weeks after the end of a session in which he can still veto bills. The House bill currently has more than 20 authors and coauthors.

Opponents of the bill have also said it would be difficult to enforce. There are similar bands in 39 other states and the District of Columbia, and police officers in Georgia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Massachusetts and Colorado have said it is difficult to tell the difference between sending text messages and legal uses of a cellphone, like looking up a number.

Experts are divided on the success of current bans. At a hearing on the bill last month, state Rep. George Lavender, R-Texarkana, pointed to a 2010 report by the Highway Loss Data Institute in which data from four states that had passed a ban showed “a slight increase in the frequency of insurance claims filed under collision coverage for damage to vehicles in crashes.” He mentioned the possibility that drivers hold their phones lower when they are trying to avoid detection by police, and that this is more dangerous.

“The statistics show that [a ban] does not reduce accidents,” Lavender said. “This is not going to get us where we need to be.”

More than 25 cities in Texas have enacted their own bans on texting while driving, and San Antonio has reported issuing 1,400 citations since their ban was introduced in 2011.

Dotson’s note: I believe that HB 63 should become law as soon as possible. Whether you agree or not, please let our representative Todd Hunter know your thoughts. Perhaps Corpus Christi should follow the example of San Antonio and enact our own ban. Your city contacts are Coleen McIntire, Lillian Riojas, Mark Scott, David Loeb and Nelda Martinez. Let them know how you feel.

Hang In There…We will keep you posted.

Island Resident Presents at National Convention

Part-time Island resident Kathleen Cullinan presented a session at the National Catholic Education Association’s April convention in Houston.

Cullinan and her teaching partner Rosie Gazda presented, “Ignite Learning with Lessons That Last: Cross-curricular Integration in the Middle School Setting.” As sixth grade language arts and social studies teachers working with the same students, they like to coordinate their instruction to meet curriculum goals for both subjects. They say such planning incorporates best practices and collaboration.

The annual NCEA conference is the largest private education association meeting in the United States. Participants include all aspects of Catholic and faith-based instruction from preschool through secondary schools, higher education, and parish religious education.

As teaching veterans of 25 and 29 years, respectively, the two feel honored to be selected for the national convention.

“We were invited four times to speak last year, but found we were unable to attend,” Cullinan said. “We were disappointed, but the NCEA continued to seek us out so we committed to speak this year. We decided to pay our own way and do it all on our own time.”

“We are committed to excellence, and we try to make learning fun for our students. So we were determined to make this fun

presentation to our fellow teachers,” she said. “We wore cowboy hats and bandanas, and took pom-poms and noisemakers that would appeal to the cheerful spirit of teachers.”

Several colleagues also contributed personal time to help their fellow teachers prepare materials for the presentation. “Collaboration can be quite contagious,” Cullinan said.

“Our methods are not unique, though they are highly effective,” said Gazda. The two were motivated because they have attended previous conferences and learned so much from others. “At this stage in our careers, we both felt we had something to offer and it was time to step forward.”

Thanks to all who volunteered and help out with registration, luncheon, St. Joe Island, or helped to clean the Beach. Thanks also to Deno our Chairman for the Adopt-A-Beach, Glen and his cooking crew and servers, and the St. Joe Island cleaners let by Theta, Jill, and Julie. Special thanks also to Dennis, my
