    0. FOREWORD0.1 Thii Indian Standard ( First Revision ) was adopted by the IndianStandards Institution on 7 October 1982, after the draft finalized by theCode of Practice for Power Installation and Maintenance SectionalCommittee had been approved by the Electrotechnical Division Council.0.2 Under Rule No. 35 of the Xndian Electricity Rules, 1956, the owner ofevery medium, high and extra high voltage installation is required to affixpermanently in a conspicuous position a danger notice in Hindi or Englishand the local language of the district, with the sign of skull and bones andof a type approved by the Electrical Inspector. The rule is reproduwdin Appendix A.0.3 It has been however observed that in different places, different sizesand designs of such notice plates have been in use and the need forstandardizing the important features of such danger notice plates has beenlong since felt. This standard was therefore originally prepared in 1963,to cover Hindi version of the notice plates in consonance with the thenexisting rules.0.4 This revision is being brought out to cover standardized features ofnotice plates in line with IE Rule 35 as amended as well as to lay downessential requirements and tests to ensure satisfactory functioning ofdanger notice plates in use. This revision also includes recommendedequivalent to the word danger in some of the regional languages foruse in the respective states. Equivalents in other languages are underconsideration.0.5 This standard for the time being includes the requirements of dangernotice in the form of plates only. It is, however, recognized that the useof danger notices in the form of stickers are also in vogue in the countryin some States. The requirements of such danger notices in a form otherthan plates are under consideration for standardization.0.6 In the interest of universal acceptance of the message of caut.bn in thedanger notice irrespective of language consideration, it is proposed to

lS:2551-1982evolve, a standard symbol for danger which would, it is hoped in duecourse replace the present contents of danger notice.0.7 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of thisstandard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test, shall be rounded off in accordancewith IS: 2-1960*. The number of significant places retained in therounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value inthis standard.1. SCOPE

    .

1.1 This standard covers danger notice plates to be displayed inaccordance with Rule No. 35 of the Indian Electricity Rules, 1956.2. DANGER NOTICE PLATES2.1 Dimensions2.1.1 For the purposes of this standard, two sizes of danger notice platesare recommended as below:

    a) For display at medium voltage installations 200 X 150mm( see Fig. 1 )b) For high and extra high voltage installations 250 X 200 mm( see Fig. 2 )

2.1.2 All letterings shall be centrally spaced. The dimensions of theletters, figures and their respective positions shall be as given in Fig. 1and Fig. 2 for medium voltage and high and extra high voltage installa-tions respectively. The size of each letter in the word in each language, and the spacing between them for the purposes of scribing shall be sochosen that they are uniformly written in the space earmarked for them.

2.1.3 The corners of the plate shall be rounded off.2.1.4 The location of the fixing holes shall be left to the choice of theuser.

    3. MATERIAL AND FINISH3.1 The plate shall be made from mild steel, at least I.6 mm thick andvitreous enamelled white, with letters, figures and the conventional skulland cross-bones in signal red colour [see IS : -1978t ] on the front side. The rear side of the plate shall also be enamelled.
