0.2 Fcnitrothion (lusting powders are largely used in the control of pestsof agricultural importance. This is specially effective against S0l11C ofthe pests of the rice crop and it is also useful in the control of certainacarinc pests.

0.3 '[his standard is one of a series of Indian Standards on pesticides anrltheir formulations. Other standards in this scr ies arc listed on page 10.

0.4 For tI1C purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of thisstandard is complied with, tile final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordancewith IS: 2-1960·. Tile number of significant places retained in therounded off value should be the saU1C as that of the specified value in thisstandard.

1. SCOPE

1.1 This standard prescribes requirements and methods of test for fenitrothion dusting powders containing varying percentages of fenitrothion, technical.

2. REQ,UIREMENTS

2.1 Description - The material shall he in the form of homogeneouspowder. It shall be free-flowing and devoid of lumps; tile fenitrothionused in its manufacture shall have been uniformly mixed in a suitablefiller, such as talc, pyrophyllite, etc. The material, when dusted front ahand rotary duster, shall issue freely without clogging or bridging.

DETERMINATION OF FENiTROTHION CONTENT

A-G. PRINCIPLE OF THE METHOD

A-o.1 The sample is dissolved in ether and the most likely impurity,4-nitro-m-cresol, is extracted with mild alkali. The ether layer is treatedwith zinc and an acetic acid-hydrochloric acid mixture and the aminegroups formed are titrated with standard sodium nitrite solution.

A-l.2 Standard Sodium Nitrite Solution - 0·1 M, standardizedagainst sulphanilic acid. Dissolve 6·90 g of sodium nitrite in distilledwater and make up to one litre with distilled water. Standardize asfollows:

Weigh accurately 0·40 to 0·45 ~ of anhydrous sulphanilic acidanalytical grade into a 400-ml tall-form beaker. Add 80 rot ofdistilled water, 10 ml of concentrated hydrochloric acid, 30 rolofglacial acetic acid ancl 5 g of sodium ( or potassium ) bromide, Coolthe mixture to 0 to 10°C by the arld ition of clean, shaved ice andstir mechanically. A..3. PROCEDURE

A-3.1 Extraction of Free 4-Nitro-m-Cresol- Weigh accuratelysufficient quantity of the material containing I ~ of fenitrothion in a250-011 beaker. Add 70 ml of ether and agitate for 5 minutes and filterthrough a fritted-glass crucible. Wash the flask and the residue in thecrucible with portions of ether to extract fenitrothion completely. Reducetile volume to about 50 ml and transfer it to separating funnel with100 ml ether in two lots. Extract the ether solution four times with20-ml portions of chilled I percent ml» solution of sodium carbonate.Dry ether phase with 2 to 3 ~ of anhydrous sodium sulphate.Extraction should be as rapid as possible to prevent degradation of theactive principle.

A-3.2 DetermlnatioD of Active IngredieDt - Transfer the ether layerquantitatively to a 500-ml flask using small portion of ether. Distil offether in a steam-bath till only the residue is left at the bottom of theflask. Add 100 ml of acetic acid-hydrochloric acid mixture and 10 giron-free zinc dust to the residue and heat gently on a steam-bath till thesolution is colourless. Add 25 lnl of concentrated hydrochloric acid and75 ml of distilled water to complete the solution of the zinc dust. Cool, wash down the beaker and watch glass with distilled water and add 5 ~

of sodium ( or potassium) bromide. Cool the mixture to 0 to lOQC by

the addition of clean shaved ice and stir mechanically: Titrate at 0 to10°0 with the standardized 0·1 M sodium nitrite as rapidly as the spottest permits. Near the end-point add the sodium nitrite' in four-dropportions.

A-3.3 Spot Test - Dip a glass rod into the solution to be tested andthen touch the rod quickly to a piece of potassium iodide-starch paper. The end-point is reached when an intense blue-black colour appearsimmediately and is obtained repeatedly dui in~ a one-minute periodwithout further addition of sodium nitrite.
