Year Home Learning Grid – School ClosureFoundation- For Week Beginning 11th May and 18th May

Week Beginning 18/05/20

MATHS- MONDAY

1) Say a number to your child. Can they find it on the number line? Can they then count from that number until you say stop? Repeat for different starting numbers.

2) Doubles- Hold up 3 fingers on one hand. How many fingers are there? Hold up 3 on the other hand? How many on this hand? There are the same number. I have Double 3.How many fingers are there altogether? Double 3 is 6! Have two plates. Put 4 bits of pasta on one plate. How many? If I put 4 on the other plate I have Double 4. How much is double 4? Using small toys, put 2 in a group. Can you put more toys there so that we have double 2? What will you need to do? How many altogether? If you have dominoes at home, use those. If not you can use the Dominoes resource sheet provided (you can just use it on a screen if you can’t print it out). Which dominoes show double? Can you draw your own double dominoes> How many spots altogether?

MATHS - TUESDAY 1) Say a number to your child. Can they find it on the number line? Can they then count BACK that number until you say stop?Repeat for different starting numbers.

2) Watch video doubles rap https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ik_-OAgzD-8What do you do if you ‘double’ a number? Can you show me with your fingers? Can you use pencils to find out what double 4 is? What will you need to do?

Show your child that to write down double 4, we write

4 + 4 =

What is 4 + 4?

Complete ‘Butterfly Doubles’ resource sheet. If you don’t have access to a printer, draw some outlines of butterflies for your child to create the ‘doubles’

MATHS -WEDNESDAY 1) Show a number to your child.

Can they count on from that number WITHOUT using a number line?

2) Ask your child to show you double 5, double 2, double 3 using different objects. Look at document 'Solving problems- doubles.'

Work through each problem with your child, asking them to show/explain how they would solve it. As an extension, your child could write the number sentence to represent the problem. Eg- a ladybird has 5 spots on each wing. How many spots does it have?

5 + 5 = 10

MATHS -THURSDAY 1) Show a number to your child. Can

they count BACK from that number WITHOUT using number line?

2) Measure- Have strips of paper or string in a box, which are 'caterpillars'. Pull out one each. What do you notice? "I notice that...."Model saying the language of 'longer than' or 'shorther' than.eg- My caterpillar is LONGER THAN your caterpillar. Your caterpillar is SHORTER THAN my caterpillar. Repeat with new caterpillars form the box but get your child to say " I notice that...." and encouraging the language of longer and shorter NOT smaller and bigger.

Have two strips which are very close in length. I wonder which one is longer/shorter? Model laying each strip on the table with their ends at the same starting point. Show how one sticks out further so that it is longer.Give your child two strips which are close in length and get them to find out which is shorter or longer by doing what you showed them.

Have a selection of strips of paper. Choose one. Can you find a strip which is longer than mine? Hold your up higher and say that yours is longer. Ask your child to prove to you that their strip is longer by putting the end of each strip level, to start with.

MATHS -FRIDAY 1) Give your child two numbers. Which is more

or less? Can they prove that to you? How can they show you that …. is more/less than….?

2) Measure-

Using the strips of paper from yesterday or string. Choose two. What does you child notice? Are they remembering to use the language of longer and shorter and NOT smaller and bigger.

Give them a strip of paper. Can they find 3 things in the house which are longer than it and 3 things that are shorter than it?

Have two strips which are the same? What do they notice? Tell them that they are the same length. We can say that they are "equal."

Play https://www.splashlearn.com/measurement-games-for-kindergarteners (you are requested to sign up for free, after about 5 questions)

Carry out activity sheet 'ordering caterpillar lengths’

If you are unable to print or choose not to, provide 4 or 5 strips of paper or string in varying length. Can they order them from shortest to longest?

PLEASE REMEMBER, WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE PHOTOS OF ALL ACTIVITIES ON OUR FOUNDATION FACEBOOK PAGE OR ON TAPESTRY.

(If you cannot print it write the days of the week and make a sheet with the sequence of events for each day so that your child can cut them out.) This is a reading task too. Some words your child might not recognize. A nice way to make it fun is by noticing words eg I can see ate here and there using your pointing finger. Can we find ate anywhere else. Celebrate your child reading the whole story. They will memorize parts of it but this is ok and gradually they will recognize every word as they read. This maybe a fun activity for your child to read on the phone to a Granny or Grampa like the oracy activity. Please share on Tapestry too!
