March 2014

Dear Supporter,

Welcome back to your next visit to our sanctuary. Every two months we come into your home andbeckon you to visit our home with all our pig residents running around living their daily lives plus allthe newbies who may never have seen another pig since they left their litter exploring their newenvironment, talking, fence fighting, and foaming with great excitement. It is such fun to witnesstheir first meeting with another pig. We also have one sheep and various pets who live here with theirseven human companions who live on site at Ironwood.

One of our supporters wrote: “Hello to all, Hope you are all keeping well. I love your magazine. It issuch a joy to read and see you all as you work with the pigs. They are such beautiful animals andtheir stories are wonderful. I look forward to it so much.” She sounded like she was almost right hereand could actually experience life here at the sanctuary. I was very pleased to read that note and somany others that come to us.

Many of you will never have an opportunity to visit our pigs in person, so it is our goal to be astransparent as possible and pull you into all the details of life here at the sanctuary. All of our detailarticles about feeding, watering, trimming, making meds, special foods, afternoon juice runs and somany others keep you informed over time about how the pigs are cared for here and how much effortit takes to really provide a good home for our residents.

I feel from your many notes, cards and all manner of support that our visits to your home from ourshas built a relationship with us. This is our goal.

Your relationship with our pigs and the support you give them iswhat makes it work. You are as much a part of the whole as arewe. You can see from the stories and faces of the pigs that theylike this relationship that has happened on their behalf. Thankyou from them and from us.

Sincerely,

Mary SchanzPresident and CoFounder

aphne is an adorablelittle lady who came tothe sanctuary on

September 14, 2004 along withher sister Fiona. The two girlshad been abandoned and left towander the neighborhood.Concerned about their safety, oneof the home owners called to seeif we would come get them.

Daphne and Fiona had a veryclose relationship and were thebest of friends. They rarely spenttime with other pigs, preferringonly the company of each other. That changed just a few monthsbefore Fiona died. The sistersbegan hanging out with two oldfriends, Willow and Lois. The

four of them started sharing ashelter and were often seennapping together under a favorite

bush. When Fiona passed away inJune of 2013, Daphne had Willowand Lois to help her deal with hergrief.

The vast majority of pigs trulyvalue the friendships they developwith other pigs and come todepend on one another forcomfort and companionship.Daphne had a special relationshipwith her sister but was lucky tohave established new friendsbefore Fiona was gone. Duringthe past five or so months,Daphne has become more social

than ever before. She still lovesspending time with Lois andWillow but can often be foundresting with any number of “theladies” that are all familymembers from a rescue we did inPeoria nearly six years ago. It isobvious that Daphne does notwant to be alone. She seeks outother pigs, wanting and needingthat closeness she had with Fiona. She’ll probably never have thesort of deep friendship she sharedwith her sister, but Daphne hascertainly found pigs that love herand have opened their circle of

friends to allow her in. And whynot! She is such a sweetheart witha lot of love to share. Whowouldn’t want to be Daphne’sfriend! ---Donna

At our annual Open House wehave a table set up with thesanctuary t-shirts, hats and cardsfor sell. Barbara alwaysorganizes and handles the sale ofthese items. That includes gettingeverything out on the table early

that morning, staying at the tableall day to sell to our visitors thenpacking up the leftovers at the endof the day. This year, she came inthe day before to sort and fold t-shirts to have them ready fordisplay.

Once a year Barbara updates thecredit card log which is a verytedious task taking about twoweeks to accomplish….not muchfun involved there but a verynecessary chore.

Barbara is also a whiz at makinggreeting cards using pictures ofour pigs. We always have avariety of birthday, get well, thankyou, etc. cards for sale at theVisitor Center at Ironwood.Barbara keeps Mary and mesupplied with cute cards to sendout to supporters and sponsors forspecial occasions or for specialdonation notes. If you haveattended our Open Houses heldeach November, you might haveseen or bought sets of piggyChristmas cards prepared byBarbara. She makes all of thesecards at her own expense on herown time and they are alwaysadorable!

arbara has always been ananimal advocate. Afterreading an article in the

local newspaper about someonevolunteering at Ironwood, shethought it sounded like somethingshe wanted to learn more about. At the annual Animal Fair inTucson, Barbara found a boothdisplaying information about thesanctuary. There she wasintroduced to Mary, got directionson how to get to Ironwood and goton board the volunteer train!

After seven years of volunteeringfor us, Barbara has added manycars to her train. She is invaluablein the home office in Tucson. There she is busy making copiesof the donation checks for dataentry. Barbara prepares thedeposit tickets and even takes thatto the bank each week to make the

deposit. She also sorts all thecredit card receipts according todate and card then works withBen to reconcile each credit cardaccount. These activities take anaverage of 5-6 hours each week.

We get a lot of fleece blanketsdonated for the piggies. Theseare really soft and warm but aretoo small to be of much benefit tothe pigs. Barbara, as well asCindy and Loretta, two othervolunteers take these blankets andsew them into double layers. Then two doubled pieces aresewn side by side with extrastitching across the length toprevent ballooning creating theperfect piggy sized fleece blanket.Barbara has sewn a lot of thesefor us over the past few years.

hen Pumba returnedfrom our vet a fewweeks ago after

surgery he was feeling very underthe weather and was not at allinterested in getting up from hiscarrier. Jeff, his pen companion, was concerned about poorPumba’s condition and he cameover to give him a little nudge toconsole him and to tell him that“all will be ok Pumba.” Bymorning Pumba had gotten upfrom his carrier and was in hisshelter lying next to Jeff. Thesetwo old guys have become closefriends since they both arrivedfrom our Annex facility fordifferent illnesses.

Pumba & JeffW

Many years ago, back in 1999when we began volunteering atwhat is now our Annex, Pumbalived down the street with hisfemale companion. They wouldhave litters of piglets and whenthe owners could not place themthey would ask Lynnette, theowner of the Annex back then, totake them. She finally said justgive them both to me so that ishow Pumba arrived at the Annex.

Dr. Page neutered him at theAnnex in the year 2000 so Pumbahas been around a year or two forsure. Recently Pumba haddeveloped a huge abscess on hisneck and face, so we had takenhim to our vet to have it lanced

and cleaned. Jeff is alsorecovering from his illness andhas been gaining the weight hehad lost. Once they haverecovered they will both bereleased to our Special Needs Eastfield. This field is occupied byother pigs who have been broughtover from our Annex in need ofmore extensive care. They are allbeing reunited and renewing oldfriendships.

Again we see evidence of a socialnetwork we so often do not giveour animal friends credit for. Justyesterday I put Pumba and Jeffand Hank and Claudia out in theexercise yard together. Hank andClaudia were brought from theAnnex when it was stillPigs*A*Lot back in January of2002 but Pumba and Jeffremained at our Annex untilrecently. Once in the exerciseyard together there was nofighting and they all hung outtogether as if there had not been11 years of separation.

Who Is This Pig?ow can you tell themapart?!” This isprobably one of the most

common questions we receive atthe sanctuary. With a field full of40 black pigs it can seem difficultto know who each one is. Peoplealways say that the pigs all lookthe same and wonder how weknow who everyone is. Well, it’snot easy at first, but I tell peoplethat once you begin learning whois who and seeing differences inthe pigs that it all starts to geteasier.

When first learning who a pig iswe look for big differences suchas a large white spot on a blackpig or a pink nose. Sometimestorn ears are a way to rememberwho someone is. Lawrence Welkand Jackie are good examples. These boys are in our PeoriaField. Both will come up fortheir morning medications and sitfor you. When new to learning thepigs it can be quite easy tomistake one for the other. Thenyou start to notice things likeJackie having a small pink spot onhis nose. However, if there is dirt

on it you can’t see the spot buthe’ll let you clean it off so you canbe sure. This used to be the mainway to tell these two apart.Recently Lawrence Welk hasreceived a tear in his right earfrom fighting which is a quickerway to tell them apart now, especially when Jackie’s nose isdirty. Aside from physicalcharacteristics it also helps tolearn a pig’s behavior or wherethey hang out in a field or evenwho they hang out with. Whileboth boys are friendly Jackie ismore pettable than Lawrence. Also, Lawrence can be found

eating breakfast in the section ofthis field that we call MaryEvan’s, while Jackie is usuallyfound eating at the northern endof the field.

It’s usually the black pigs thatpeople have trouble with as thereare many more of them in ourpopulation, but there are severalwhite pigs that look similar.

Cindy and Brazil are a pair thatcan be difficult to tell apart. These two reside in the same fieldas Jackie and Lawrence. Bothgirls hang out in the same areaand you’ll often see them passyou and wonder which one youjust saw. These two are the samesize and both have black spotsover their eyes. There is onequick difference to notice. Brazilhas a small black spot at the top ofher nose, unlike Cindy who hasone on the side. After looking atthe two you start to notice adifference in their head shape. That might sound weird but afterseeing several pigs who look alike

these small differences are a bigdeal! Also, Brazil will seek outattention and is more affectionate. For a while I thought I had beenpetting Cindy but learnedotherwise.

In our North Field we have threegirls that can be tricky to tellapart; Ethel, Charlotte and Olivia. When Charlotte and Oliviaarrived we knew they were sistersand we suspect that Ethel isrelated to them as well. It’s

easiest to tell these three apartwhen they are all together but ifthey come up separately there area few things to look for. Charlottehas more white on her face thanthe other two. Ethel has littlespots on her nose and is shorterand stockier than the other two. Itcan be especially tricky with thesegirls as all can be friendly andpushy and all hang out on the

western end of our North Field.

We also have Gabe and Abel inour North Field who keep peopleon their thinking toes. Thesebrothers came to us when theywere very young. As they startedto trust us Gabe would let us getclose to him and eventually pethis head. This was the main wayto tell who was who. We alsonoticed that Abel had a few, and Ido mean few, white hairs on hisforehead. This would work in thecooler months but once they losetheir winter coats you can’t relyon the hairs. The boys arecontinuing to grow and still lookquite similar. Gabe is still asmidge more friendly than Abelbut neither care to be petted orhave their bellies rubbed. Abelhas a slightly bigger belly thanGabe but that can be tricky tonotice. These two are probablythe hardest for people to tell apartand can often take a few sets ofeyes to be sure.

When similar looking pigs arestanding together it can be easierto tell them apart, but when yousee them separately it can be alittle more difficult. To make

Ethel

things worse a lot of the pigs losetheir hair for the summer anddon’t look like themselves. Aside

from any physical or behavioralobservations that may help, pigsare great at learning their names. This can be very helpful whencalling for a certain pig that haslook-a-likes. It’s fun learning thedifferences in all of the pigs.Everyone is different some way oranother, and if you don’t notice itthey are likely to show you.

ggression in companionpigs has been discussedbefore in our newsletters.

I am returning to this topicbecause these past few months ithas become the number onereason for release of pigs toIronwood and they are all theONLY PIG in the family and allbut one is young. People come tous interested in adoption andwhen I almost universally refuseto adopt only one pig they goelsewhere and buy a pig. Thisreally bothers me because ourmission, in part, is to give a hometo pigs that are abandoned, abused, neglected and yesunwanted as well. However, taking in so many healthy youngpigs, who often had a good home,to come live in a sanctuary settingdoes not seem quite right to me.

Here are some of the quotes fromsome recent e-mails:

“Hi, I am looking for some helpwith aggression in my 1 year 9month old pot belly pig.” ...

“Scooby is a neutered male whohas become aggressive toward mydogs and other people.” He was

referring to his daughter. Scoobyhad a wonderful home and wasmuch loved.

“He is territorial, smart, and wereally enjoy having him. Hisbehavior has become moreaggressive lately.” Speedo isanother neutered pig from abeautiful home and folks whoreally cared about him.

“I have a 3 1/2 year old pot bellypig .... This last year she hasbecome aggressive and nipped atpeople .... In the past few daysshe has literally plunged at meand tried to attack me. I am nowfinding I am scared of her ....”

“We were fully prepared for allthe ins and outs of raising a pigbut we weren’t quite prepared forher size or her aggression towardssome people. She knocks overand bites my kids ....” The kidsare 9 and 11, not that young, andhe made the effort to bring her allthe way from New Mexico.

This is my favorite but she did notask us to take her pig. She waslooking for advice. “I got himfrom ... a breeder in Houston, whogrossly misrepresented the facts

about the pigs she breeds. He is250+ pounds, but he is never theless loved. ...his aggressionproblem has become extreme. ...“

So the moral of this story is: Arethe pigs bad or are the peoplebad? The answer is neither. Dr.Valarie Tynes has written quite alot about the social behavior ofthe pig. She says it is her belief“that aggression in pet pot belliedpig is a complex, multifactorialproblem. Contributing causes tobe considered are: genetics, dominance status in the litter, early weaning, inappropriatehuman interaction, and theunnatural or unstimulatingenvironment in which the pig isnot allowed to express normalspecies typical behavior.” Shefurther says “Pot bellied pigaggression towards humans is thebehavior problem reported mostto the author.” “The pet pig thatspends most of it’s time insidethe house, without the presenceof another pig, is unable toexhibit many of it’s speciestypical activities, includingsocial behavior.”

Socks and Eva in their wallowsare examples of species typicalbehavior.

There is no easy single solution, but I would say unequivocally donot have only one pig, do nothave a pig that is always kept inthe house, and do not evenentertain having a pig withoutdoing your research about a pig’sbehavior and what you must do to

avoid the aggression we so oftensee. I know most of our readerswill never have a pig and I mayanger many of those who read thiswho do have a pig as a companionanimal. However we are the oneswho get the sad and sometimesfrantic calls and e-mails. By thetime we are contacted it is usuallytoo late. The people have beenbitten, knocked down, or in someother way threatened by the sweetlittle pig they loved so much a fewmonths earlier. As Dr. Tynes hassaid the aggression has to beprevented from the time the pig

comes into the home rather thantrying to correct behavior that hasgotten out of control. Please passthis important message on to allthat you know who may beconsidering having a pig as acompanion. They are wonderfulanimals indeed but don’t bemisled by misinformation.

We have enough truly neglected, abused and abandoned pigs to fillour sanctuary.

---Mary

In Memory of William Johnsonillie had been a friendof pigs for close to 20years where for this

period of time he picked upunwanted produce from a majorlocal market twice a week anddelivered this to a pot bellied pigsanctuary called Pigs*A*Lot thatlater became our Annex. Inrecent years Willie begandelivering produce, day oldbread, and other goodies twice aweek to Ironwood. When hedelivered produce he wouldalways stay and help to prepare itfor the pigs.

Willie enjoyed driving one of thewater trucks and he would workwith Ben getting water for thepigs from Red Rock makingmany trips during the summerwhen our water need was thegreatest.

Willie was always willing to helpout not only with produce butwatering our many trees, repairing broken pipes from awinter freeze, and other jobs.

Before we knew Willie he hadobtained a PhD in

Biology/Zoology specializing inHerpetology, was an expert infencing, and had a business usingfiberglass to create largestructures that looked like naturalrocks. If you ever have thechance to visit KartchnerCaverns in Benson, AZ you willsee Willie’s fiberglass artwork atthe entrance to this natural cave.

Willie passed away in January2014. We miss him very muchfor his personality, hiswillingness to help and his crazyways.

oco is one bigpotbelly pig.She is so

slimmed down now it’salmost hard to recognizeher. Many years ago weadopted one of oursweet pigs, Ziggy, to alady in Show Low, AZ.She lived there for sixyears and then in thesummer of 2011 we got

a call from the owner who said she was moving toNew York and could not take Ziggy along and by theway she had another 4 year old pig that was a hog.Well that put us off since we generally do not takehogs and how would we transport both of them from

Show Low. Before we could make the arrangementsthe owner moved to New York and left Coco andZiggy with the folks renting her property. The renterscalled in the fall to say the cold weather was coming

and they needed to have the pigs moved to Ironwood. So we asked for a picture and found out Coco was nota hog but a very very large pot bellied pig. With thatin mind two of our staff traveled to Show Low and

transported them both to Ironwood. It was prettyshocking to see how big and how fat she was. Wewere told she had been fed Old Roy dog food.

Well, that was over 2 years ago and now she is a mereimage of herself. She has settled in well here atIronwood. She does eat in a pen so she can’t steal allher field companions’ food, but she generally getsalong well with her new friends. She is a big hit withthe visitors who come for a visit as well. She andZiggy are still good friends. We are very happy tohave Coco and to have Ziggy back with us.

pregnant female. On January 1st her babies wereborn. Wyatt and Doc were two of her babies thatwere adopted in April 2008. They lived happily intheir home with one other pig, Amy for nearly 4years. Maybe too happily since they were prettyobese when we got them back. But like so manyother casualties of the economic downturn Wyatt,Doc, and Amy lost their home, so they returned toIronwood as adults. For quite some time they haddifficulty getting around, but eventually they all lostweight and have been on medication for arthritis. Now they are ready to venture out of their pen in theMain Field and join the others who live in the field. They will always be able to return to Tombstone, thename we have given their little enclosure, at night orwhen they wish to retreat back home.
