WHAT IS THERMOGRAPHY?

Thermography is a specialist technique which uses infrared-sensitive cameras to inspect buildings, electrical equipment, rotating machinery and devices to detect faults or problematic areas, as part of routine maintenance or fault-finding.

This non-invasive method allows the identification - both in terms of location and severity - of problems associated with heat loss. For example, through missing insulation and thermal bridging in buildings, the poor connections and uneven loading that lead to the overheating and burnout of electro-mechanical systems and all other occasions when there is a need to map and measure temperature changes. Thermography can also be used as part of condition monitoring, where repeated surveys over time can identify the onset of equipment breakdown, therefore maximising the operational availability of critical production systems.

FOUNDATION

PCN CATEGORY 1A foundation level 4-day course offering a total of 32 hours

combined theoretical and practical training. The standard PCN Category 1 course is targeted towards those wanting to learn the basics of thermography and achieve a highly recognized

and accredited qualification.

Also based on the iRed core module, the PCN Category 1 course covers the basics of thermographic principles and camera operation and assumes no previous knowledge of thermography. This course is ideal and highly recommended for new camera owners, engineering personnel or managers wanting to use thermography to perform electrical inspections.

Primarily developed for the needs of industry, this foundation course is entirely suitable for all practitioners from various disciplines. The PCN Category 1 course is designed to provide a substantial level of usable information and experience. The primary difference between this course and the iRed Category 1 is that the PCN qualification is accredited by BINDT, and therefore requires practical experience.

BINDT will issue the PCN Category 1 certificate once delegates have passed the exam and logged 12 months experience. Experience requires a minimum of 16 hours a month totaling 192 hours for the year. The exam can be sat up to a year after course completion.

FOUNDATION

ABBE CERTIFICATEThis 5-day, 40 hour course is designed to enable delegates to survey residential properties as an independent infrared

thermographer, without the need to operate under the supervision of a Category 2/Level 4 qualified thermographer.

Developed in conjunction with ABBE to meet the new ISO 6781 standard for built environment thermography, the ABBE level 3 qualification ensures that delegates have the necessary knowledge and practical skills to set up in business as residential infrared thermographers. This course uses the iRed core foundation module plus an additional day’s training in the construction and pathology of houses. As such, it includes a practical surveying exercise where delegates prepare for, carry out and report on a thermographic survey of a local building.

The ABBE Level 3 Certificate requires delegates to complete a portfolio of evidence that includes thermographic survey reports on 5 different properties. As such, the time it takes to complete this qualification is dependant on previous experience and the time it takes each delegate to carry out the surveys.

Successful completion of the above awards the ABBE Level 3 Certificate, allowing delegates to operate without supervision.
