Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation  is a subsidiary of the Indian Railways that handles the catering, tourism and online ticketing operations of the railways.

This document deals with the Government to citizen service, IRCTC , and compares the various factors like price, ease of access, comfort and payment options of the website and traditional options. The step by step procedures of the process are enlisted, which gives a clear understanding of methods. The analysis is thorough and extensive exploring all parameters of both the methods and reaching a clear conclusion

The document then explores the possible recommendations for the website, and also offers a holistic view on whether the site is the most convenient option for booking railway tickets.

The research methodology used was the experience of booking tickets through irctc and having used almost all of its services at one point or the other and also having booked tickets conventionally.

The literature incorporated in the document is mostly self-written with an exception of certain procedure that were available on the official website.

Irctc Mobile applicationIn a move to offer better services to its customers, IRCTC introduced its IRCTC mobile software using which customers can book their tickets using their mobiles. They can also avail other services offered on the IRCTC website including PNR status check, check seat availability, check the fare for a journey and other such information services. The service is being used by a number of customers across India because of the numerous advantages it has. Some of the benefits that IRCTC mobile application offers for its customers include:

Convenience: It is not required to switch on your computer log on the IRCTC website and book the ticket nor do you have to stand in long queues at the railway station in order to have your ticket booked. It is much easier to book your ticket or make an enquiry while you are doing anything.

Doorstep delivery: No need of worrying how to take the print out of the ticket that you book via your cell phone. Tickets booked via the IRCTC mobile application are delivered at your door step within three working days after booking the tickets. Even though you can show your ticket on your cell phone along with a valid photo identity proof, the doorstep delivery service is something that IRCTC introduced to offer better services to its customers

Easy to use: The interface of the IRCTC mobile application is much like that of the IRCTC website. Even if you have not used the website, you would find the application easy to use because of its clearly laid out, user friendly and simple interface.

Secure payment gateway : IRCTC mobile application is integrated with the secure payment gateway with the latest method of encryption; hence all the details you enter cannot reach anyone else.

Versatility: Most apps require a smart phone for functioning. Smart phones are a costly product and are not affordable for a large portion of the county’s population. This would have restricted the

use of the application; however IRCTC has designed the software in such a way that it can be used on any Java and GPRS enabled handset as well as on various smart phones with different platforms including Symbian, Windows, iOS and Android.

Conclusions/ recommendations1. The irctc website is a great initiative started by the government, and it has become one of the most

accessed website in the country. It provides hassle free ticket booking as most customers do not want to go to railway stations every time they wish to book a ticket. And most importantly, it is a very versatile website today

2. The government has even introduced various schemes to make the website even more lucrative specially to frequent travelers. The website is both informative and easy to maneuver around. Any citizen can easily make an account and access all facilities provided.

3. Though there are numerous benefits, the website still lacks finesse, like most government to citizen sites. It works slow most of the times, the booking time is very high and tatkal tickets are almost impossible to book. The site has various tributary sites, that are still under construction like www.railtourismindia.com , but at the moment, these are largely unaccessible and the tourism industry is not benefitting from the website

4. The flight booking system started by irctc, is a great venture, and now it has made irctc a platform for domestic travel book by any means. This has added a lot of value to the website

Page 20: IRCTC site analysis

19 | P a g e

5. There is a lot of potential to tap foreign tourism through making this site global, and making it easy and interesting for tourists to access its feature.

6. By and large the government is still working to improve the site greatly and the old features are also being revamped as new features are continuously added. Even as of today, IRCTC is the most viewed site, but the future potential of the site is to an even larger extent. With the continuous improvement and addition of servers and technology, it may be the best and most useful website exiting in the country soon.
