14.00 Dental Trauma

Shashi Mishra Endodontist Specialist

Afternoon Session CPD = 3 Hrs

Shashi qualified from the University of Glasgow in 1997. After general practice and oral and maxillo-facial surgery appointments in and around Manchester, he joined the Army and served for over 11 years in the Royal Army Dental Corps.

During his time in the Army, Shashi completed postgraduate training with distinction in endodontics from the Eastman Dental Institute, London. On completion of this training, Shashi was responsible for teaching endodon-tics to Dental Officers of all levels of experience, both serving and civilian, working within the Defence Dental Services. Joining Elmsleigh House in September 2010, Shashi brings a wealth of experience in both restorative and endodontic dentistry.

Aims & Objectives:

Dento-alveolar trauma is extremely prevalent. The clinical presentation can be distressing for the patient, their family and the dental team. Accurate diagnosis and correct early management significantly affects the prognosis of affected teeth and supporting tissues. This speaker will aim to demonstrate the principles behind the correct di-agnosis, management and subsequent treatment planning with the goal of ultimately providing better care for our patients.

Outcomes:

On completion you will be able to:

• Identify the common types, causes and tissues affected in dento-alveolar injuries.

• Identify relevant history and practice examination of the dento-alevolar trauma patient.

Friday 4th May Foundation Practices

On 27th April & 4th May Foundation Dentists will attend THREE other Ipswich DFT Practices.

FDs will need to pre-arrange these visits with the Practice

- to suit the Practice & Educational Supervisor

Each Practice only has to accept a maximum of 4 FD visits. This should help produce a range of visits across the Scheme. Each FD cannot visit their own Practice (or a Practice in the same group or corporate structure). This caveat is to maximise the variety of practicing environments the FDs

are exposed to.

The FDs will need to assess the strengths and weaknesses of each Practice. On 11th May they will present a 10 minute PowerPoint presentation of the Practice they feel is the best fit with their own

skills. This presentation should include:

If an FD does not make a detailed examination of the practice they visit, or behaves in an inappropriate manner—their conduct will be

highlighted to Jason Stokes.

DFT Competency Framework elements covered: Communication 14 Professionalism 17,18 Management & Leadership 19, 21

• A description of the Practice (including pictures and/or video where applica-

ble). This should include the location, facilities, building suitability, infra-structure, local population data, business model, team structure, etc*

• A brief description of what a performer role there would entail (including

contractual information, job specification, role specifics etc) • Which surgery best fits the FDs skillset and why they would make a good

team member at that particular surgery

*Please discuss the range of parameters that should be assessed at the prac-tice visits with your ES

09.30 Presentation of FD Scheme Practice Visits

FD Group

Morning Session CPD = 3 Hrs

On 27th April & 4th May FDs will attend three other Ipswich Training Practices. They need to assess the strengths and weaknesses of each practice. Today they will present a 10 minute presentation (including photos & video) of the practice they feel is the best fit with their own skills. They will need to give a potted description of the practice—a brief description of what a role there would entail—and why they would make a good team member at the surgery. They will also need to provide an overview of the business model of the practice and its likely future.

Aims This session will give the whole group a greater understanding of the variety of Dental Practices in our region. Learning Objectives This session will enable us all to grasp how Dental Practices use a variety of approaches to meet the needs of their local populations. It will give FDs a chance to view a Practice as a potential future workplace in a non threatening way—it will help equip learners with workplace appraisal skills. Learning Outcome Following the session delegates will be able to: • assess the strengths and weaknesses of a range of General Dental Practices • compare a practice’s strengths to their own skills and abilities • differentiate between a variety of potential career opportunities

Clinical Day in Practice There is no official day release education session this week. This is to allow any FD to attend the BDA Conference which will be held on the 18th & 19th May 2018. However, if an FD wishes to attend the Conference this will have to be taken as agreed holiday leave and attendance will be at the FDs expense.

British Dental Conference and Dentistry Show

18 - 19 May 2018, Birmingham NEC

About the event

The event will feature a thriving, vibrant exhibition with hundreds of our friends in the industry there to help you find the new and improved tools and services for your life in practice. Alongside the vast ex-hibition we will host a CPD theatre with a programme bringing you the quality learning you’ve come to expect from us. We’re committed to offering our members and this profession the biggest and best event in the dental calendar. Our British Dental Conference and Dentistry show is now the one date every dentist needs in their diary. And we’ve opened the doors to the whole profession, to give them all access the latest innova-tion, education and quality CPD. Members are our number one priority. On top of one unmissable national conference, we are working to ensure you have access to more exclusive events in more locations across the UK. FAQs Why are you joining forces? The British Dental Conference and Exhibition always got rave reviews. We have always looked to find way to improve things for our delegates. We believe this collaboration with CloserStill Media will do just that, providing members with the big date in the dental calendar. How much money was involved? We can’t disclose the arrangements but all decisions are taken in the interests of our members. As a not-for-profit organisation, all revenue is reinvested 'for our members’ benefit. Will the BDA still run other events? Of course. Our training and seminars continue to be in high demand. Many of our events this year have sold out and those that haven’t have been very close. Delegates tell us that they value our quality CPD, indeed that’s one of the reasons the Dentistry Show organisers are keen to work with us. Is the BDA trying to make savings? No. The BDA has come out of a period of financial uncertainty. Our aim is to provide the defining event in the dental calendar as we invest in new the events our members want. Reminders

DFT ePDP—all relevant sections will need to be completed by Friday 22nd June. If you have any queries about this—please contact Jason. If the Portfolio is not completed by this date—the Final Review of Compe-tency Progression (FRCP) cannot be completed. Completion of the ePDP is not the only factor that will ensure a successful FRCP process but it is a necessary part of the process.

Case Presentation—The case presentation PowerPoint needs to be completed and uploaded on the morning of 6th July. If you have any con-cerns about the functioning of your presentation—please bring it on your own device.

The presentation each FD needs to give on 6th July needs to be in Power-Point format—and last approximately 5 minutes. Following each presen-tation there will be about 5 minutes of questioning and feedback from the ES Group to allow discussion of any points that may arise from the con-tent of the presentations, and help to clarify each FD’s treatment philoso-phy. Completion of a satisfactory Case Presentation also contributes to the FRCP process.

Missed Sessions—all missed sessions will need to be made up with a course agreed by Jason Stokes. Proof of attendance needs to be lodged with Alison Foreman. Failure to comply with this requirement will interfere with the FRCP process.

The aim of this session is to help highlight any weaknesses or discrepancies in each of the

presenta ons, and help to clarify each FDs treatment philosophy.

In previous years your TPD and the ESs have been generous enough to contribute to a small cash prize for the best presenta on!

Learning Objec ves

• This session will enable the FDs to gain experience in group presenta on.

• This session will help the FDs structure their examina on, diagnos c and treatment planning skills

• This session will offer the FDs an opportunity to seek wide ranging peer review—and alter their clinical prac ce in light of the feedback they will receive.

Learning Outcomes

Following this session the par cipants will be able to:

• Formulate a Case Presenta on that meets the expecta on of their professional peer group.
