EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

Study Component – 60 ECTS includes:

Pedagogy of Higher Education – 10 ECTS;

Multivariate Data Analysis – 10 ECTS;

Research Methodology – 10 ECTS;

Professor’s Assistance – 5 ECTS;

Doctoral Seminar – 5 ECTS;

Specialty Obligatory Courses – 20 ECTS.

Research Component (Dissertation) – 120 ECTS.

Programme Admission Precondition: According to Georgian legislation, the candidate for studying at this program should have a Master’s degree or a degree equaled to it. If the candidate possesses a foreign Master’s Diploma or an equivalent to it which is duly recognized under the law of the country concerned, the validity of the candidate’s diploma / awarded credits has to be confirmed by the LELP – Georgian National Center for Education Quality Enhancement. The candidate to the program should meet other admission criteria according to University regulations :

- should have the B2 level in English, which is certified by an international certificate of the corresponding level (TOEFL IBT, IELTS , FCE) or graduated from an English-language Master’s program. The candidate may also take a corresponding exam at IBSU.,

- the candidate to the program has to submit a 5-page Research Proposal, the correspondence of which to the program requirements is assessed by a Dissertation Field Board commission consisting of minimum three people (including program coordinators and minimum 2 field professors)

- then an interview based on the proposal is held .

Those students who have graduated from Master’s Educational Program within the last 5 years and their GPA is at least 75 ( out of 100) or 3 ( out of 4) will be exempt from the foreign language requirement. If student is a citizen of a country, where the official language is the

relevant foreign language, is exempted from passing the foreign language exam, but others will also have to pass English language exam here or present certificate of exam which correspondent to B2 level.

Purpose of the Programme: Business education is to provide public as well as private sectors with specialists who are oriented to achieving goals, solving problems and contributing to the development of field-related spheres and organizations.

Aim:

- to generate quality academics to serve the needs of business schools, private and public financial, international organizations;

- to create new knowledge in related area; and to strengthen educational capacity in support of democratic and free market institutions. To accomplish these objectives, the program provides up-to-date and accurate course of study emphasizing the modern theoretical knowledge and innovative research methodology in the student’s field of concentration (management, marketing and finance).

- to bring up highly skilled Dr. of business administration sciences, which can correspond to contemporary demands.

During their studies students should do a lot of independent work (programmed exercises, projects, presentations, and course notes) to have formulated independent research making skills. Because of this fact it is important to have profound theoretical (pedagogical, psychological) knowledge that is provided in the list of courses. Values that will be formulated in graduate students will be profound interest in research and practical work in the appropriate fields.

[The purpose of the educational programme should be oriented on the development of student competences and identification of the field of employment and the level of envisaged knowledge, skills and values.]

Learning Outcome: Outcome of the studies are the union of the competencies, which determine what students should know, understand, or will be able to do during learning process or at different levels after graduating.

Knowledge and understanding:

By the end of the Ph.D program, candidate will gain full range of knowledge required by the obligatory standards established for rewarding the doctorate academic degree in the field of business administration. As for the professional competence of Ph.D, besides the research in relevant sphere, PhD in Business Administration will have an ability to express own views on the corresponding topic. Student assessmentStudent may be assessed orally and/or in a written way. A student’s knowledge and skills are assessed through 100 points grading system. It consists of midterm and final evaluations – maximum 60 points in midterm evaluations and maximum 40 points in final evaluation.Grading system allows:a) Five types of positive grades

1) (A) Excellent – 91 and over of maximum point;2) (B) Very good – 81-90 of maximum point;

3) (C) Good – 71-80 of maximum point;4) (D) Satisfactory – 61-70 of maximum point;5) (E) Acceptable – 51-60 of maximum point.

b) Two types of negative grades1) (FX) Fail – 41-50 of maximum point, meaning that a student requires some more work before passing and is given a chance to sit an

additional examination after independent work; 2) (F) Fail – 40 and less of maximum point, meaning that the work of a student is not acceptable and he/she has to study the subject

anew.For final evaluation, a student is admitted to the exam if his/her midterm evaluation is minimum 30 points out of 60 points. A student is allowed to take additional (make-up) exam in case he/she scored 41-50 points of final grade or minimum 51 points, but did not score at least 20 points out of 40 points of final evaluation. Credits can be obtained if a student scored:

a) Minimum 20 points out of 40 points of final evaluation; b) Minimum 51 points out of 100 points of final grade.

Defense of dissertation

Dissertation is assessed by a jury during the defense.

During the defense of the doctoral dissertation, the assessment takes place according to the following rubric:

Assessment criteria # 1-6 is done according to dissertation and publications.

The assessment of dissertation fiinally is done with the following wording:

a) Excellent (summa cum laude) – 91points and over of maximum point – an excellent performance;

b) Very good (magna cum laude) – 81-90 points of maximum point – a result exceeding given requirements in all aspects;

c) Good (cum laude) – 71-80% of maximum point – a result exceeding given requirements;

d) Average (bene) – 61-70 points of maximum point – a result satisfying given requirements in all aspects;

e) Satisfactory (rite) – 51-60 points of maximum point – a result satisfying given requirements despite some mistakes;

f) Unsatisfactory (insufficienter) – 41-50 points of maximum point – a result not satisfying given requirements because of serious mistakes;

g) Absolutely unsatisfactory (sub omni canone) – 40 points and less of maximum point – a result absolutely not satisfying given requirements.

The student is awarded the academic degree of doctor in case of obtaining any of the above mentioned grades considered by items from a) to e); in case of getting the grade considered by item f) – the student has a right to present the rewritten doctoral thesis during the first year; and in case of getting the grade considered by item g) – the student has no right to present the same doctoral thesis.

Doctoral seminars will be evaluated according to the rule of the faculty of the business management of IBSU on the assessment of a doctoral seminar (see attachment 1)

Assistance of a professor will be evaluated according to “The Rule of the faculty of the business management of IBSU on the assessment of the assistance of professor (see attachment 2)

Specificities of the Organization of the Teaching Process: Education includes 3 academic years (6 semesters), one academic year consists of 38 weeks, and from these we have 15 lecturing weeks (including midterm evaluation), 4 session weeks. Assessment form is according to ECTS, 4 semesters are allocated for preparation and defence of dissertationField of Employment: PhD graduates can be employed:

In higher educational institutions, including both academic and administrational position to provide successful development of educational process;

Scientific institutions (in particular: in such public and international organizations, which function as research institutes on modern tendencies in business

environment);

Public and private business companies;

In NGOs;

In Charity organizations and entities of social system;

Mass media centers, including central and structural management positions, and analytical-informative divisions;

Information Concerning Material Resources Necessary for the Implementation of the programme: Compulsory literature indicated in syllabus is available in library and on electronic library, on university web-page we have uploaded lecturers’ presentations dealing with the topics under study, and all lecture-rooms are equipped with projectors for slide-show presentations.

In addition to the above mentioned: Students will use the Internet (the university has a centre for independent work , which is has an Internet connection and is available

daily), computer laboratories and library. During the learning process, students will receive necessary information from their professors and consultants. Silk Road Scientific-

Research Institute enables Ph.D. students to participate in internationals conferences. IBSU is a member of the following electronic libraries:

From the given concentration Ph.D student has to choose one and study all its courses. In addition to 180 credits student can take extra course from the second concentration.According to Dissertation Board Regulation PH.D students are required to publish as minimum 3 articles (one of them in international referred journal), participate in two doctoral seminars and pass pre defence.
