Chatting with Mary Carolyn Lengacher and her hus-band, who shall remain nameless (because he hates pub-licity), who have been on a cruise to the Eastern Carib-bean. They are now planning a road trip to Arizona to commune with the cacti. They just like to go, and she loves to drive!

I was watching Mike and Meredith Miller in church Sunday, with their granddaughter, Addie. Such adoring looks! No wonder, she is adorable! Mike helps Kay

Thompson and me pass out snack packs, and we get to hear a lot about Addie.

Gay Wion has a new great-grandson named William Blake. He weighed over 6 lbs. and is at home doing well.

Danny and Jennifer Hargrove are coming from In-dianapolis for Easter. Anna and Isabelle are looking forward to seeing their grandparents, Mary Ann and Charles and Kay and Paul Thompson.

Can you believe how good Paul Campbell looks? Mardel, you must be a good nurse! We are so proud of both of you!

There are reports that a movie is being made, based on the game Monopoly. It lasts 4 hours and ends with the family fighting.

See you Thursday night, Friday night, and Sunday. Ruthie

“...on the third day...”

Eight years ago, I began attend-ing Easter Vigils on Holy Saturday as part of my personal spiritual dis-cipline and practice. As a minister, I was always busy during Easter Sunday worship thinking about worship rather than worshipping (a vocational hazard) and I needed someplace where I could go and worship as a person and not have to worry about the music or the mes-sage or the bulletins or the candles or the order of the procession or whether the scripture reader had the right translation or if there were paper towels in the bathrooms, etc. etc. etc. – a minister rarely gets to worship during worship, you know. I felt dead and needed life.

So in 2007 on Holy Saturday evening, I went to my first Easter Vigil, and ever since, I have made it a point to attend a different Easter Vigil every year at a new location; and in so doing, I have learned so much about the Christian faith that our Disciples tradition doesn’t al-ways know about.

I grew up hearing the phrase “on the third day” from the Bible and knew it was connected to Easter. “Jesus died, and three days later he rose from the dead” or something like that. However, if that were the case, then why begin the Passion story on Maundy Thursday when he died on Good Friday, and how do you come up with three days in the grave when (according to the Bible) he rose in less than two? I know it

may all sound silly, but a young boy thinks about these things (and for some reason I never asked my dad – go figure).

As I learned much later once Ibecame a minister of music and had to do research for my job, the proverbial “three days” follows the Jewish understanding of time where the new day begins at sun-set. (Think about Genesis 1 where each day of creation begins with night and ends with day.) Thus, the first day would begin on Maundy Thursday at sunset and include the events of the Passion the next morning and afternoon. The second day would begin at sunset on Good Friday and go until sunset on Holy Saturday, a day when we remember Christ being in the grave. The third day would begin at sunset on Holy Saturday and end at sunset on Eas-ter Sunday – hence why Christians for nearly 2,000 years have begun Easter celebrations with a vigil on Saturday night.

Some Disciples churches do a “sunrise service” instead of an Eas-ter Vigil, but technically you can start your Easter celebrations as soon as the “third day” begins. (For those traditions that embrace fasting during Lent, I can see why Saturday evening would be a popular time to begin Easter so you don’t have to wait until the morning to break your fast.) I, for one, was glad to discov-er this ancient Easter Vigil tradition because it gave me an opportunity to worship fully without the duties and distractions of being “the per-son in charge” for a change.

The official name for the three days is “Holy Triduum” (“tri-” meaning “three” and “-duum” mean-ing “days” – pretty simple.) It’s the most important time of the year for Christians (a.k.a. if you’re going to skip church, don’t do it then). And I

must say, going through the entirety of the Holy Triduum makes for a powerful Easter experience. It all comes together and makes sense. It sweeps you off of your feet and moves you to action. It launches you into a living, breathing Chris-tian faith full of new life.

I think that First Christian, along with many other churches right now, is going through its own “three days.” We’re in the middle of a Holy Triduum, a journey from death to new life, having some years ago ex-perienced the agonies of strife and faction and painful endings. Some of us may feel like our church has died (or at least “how it used to be” has done so). We’re now in that Holy Saturday space between death and new life, a liminal space where God is working out God’s purpose for us, transforming us, changing us, and raising us to new life – but we aren’t quite done with Holy Satur-day yet. Maybe some of us wish we could wind back the clock to long before Good Friday. Maybe some of us are frustrated that we seem to be waiting for Sunday morning to rise to new life when we could go ahead and do so now! We need to trust that God knows what God is doing, and that at the right moment we’ll have the good sense to notice the stone rolled away before us.

Holy Saturday is perhaps the hardest of the three days because we aren’t in control and yet we must re-main faithful and hopeful and obe-dient if we are to ever receive new life. May we be in vigil as a church during this coming season that we may truly be Easter people and sur-prise everyone coming to the gar-den to pay their respects to a church that is no longer dead.

Soli Deo Gloria,Rev. Michael

Dear People of FCC

Thanks for all the prayers, kind thoughts, and Rev. Michael’s visit during my recent hospital stay. I do so sincerely appreciate all - and I look forward to seeing everyone soon!

Dear FCC Quilters,

Thank you so much for both of the beautiful quilts you have made for our loved ones! Irene has hers on her bed in the nursing home. Shaina h d hers with her at the hospital and rehab after her surgery. She now has it at home as she continues to recover. It is comfort-ing to know the love and prayer that went into both quilts and the prayers that continue. The ministry you provide makes a wonder ul

Last Fall, the children of FCC carefully and prayerfully planted over 120 daffodil bulbs with the hope of bringing color to our church grounds in the Spring of 2016. Mission Accomplished! We hope you are enjoying them and what they represent.

Daffodils are flowers symbolizing friendship. Our JYF Children have been blessed to have many of you in this congregation as Adopted Grandparents, Mentors, Breakfast Club Providers, Prayer partners, Pen-pals, Sunday School Teachers, and Church Camp Sponsors; in each of these ways you have invested in them and

built friendships they will always remember. In the original daffodil story, there was a

woman who had a vision of bringing beauty and joy to an obscure mountaintop. She started planting just one bulb at a time, year after year, and she changed the world in which she lives.

We (JYF) wanted to find away to honor the investments of time each of you have given us – so we started small and believe that your investment in our lives will bring forth magnificent things so we can help change the world. Each bulb was planted in honor of YOU – our extended church family.

Young children live with awe and wonder as their daily companions. But as they grow, worries often crowd out wonder. Knowing this, how can parents strengthen their kids’ love for the world so it sticks around for the long haul?

Thankfully, parents have at their fingertips a mir-acle vaccine--one that can boost their kids’ immunity to the world’s distractions. STORY.

Well-chosen stories connect us with others, even those on the other side of the globe. Build your kids’ lives on a story-solid foundation and you’ll give them armor to shield themselves from the world’s cyni-cism. You’ll give them confidence to persevere in the face of life’s conflicts. You’ll give them a reservoir of compassion that spills over into a lifetime of love in action.

Give Your Child the World includes more than 600 children’s book recommendations from around the world. Reading lists are organized by region, country, and age range (ages 4-12). Each listing in-cludes a brief description of the book, its themes, and any content of which parents should be aware.

Parents can introduce their children to the world from the comfort of home by simply opening a book together. Give Your Child the World is poised to be-come a bestselling family reading treasury that pro-motes literacy, develops a global perspective, and strengthens family bonds while increasing faith and compassion.

Forgiven and Forgivingby L. William Countryman

In this book, Countryman doesn’t want to give us a step-by-step “how-to” towards forgiving others, but rather to have us understand the depths of God’s love for us and how that translates into grace, letting us know, deep down, that we are forgiven. Once we

understand that, Countryman argues that we can be-gin to see the world anew through God’s eyes. Only when we are able to accept God’s forgiveness for ourselves can we truly offer forgiveness to others. Countryman combines sound academic research with biblically based prose, all written in a conversation style. This book can offer valuable insight to clergy and laity alike, as well as being perfect for church study groups. Countryman makes clear that all of us need to be forgiven for something, but that God will offer us that grace and love, hopefully leading to a conversion allowing us to offer grace and forgiveness to others.

I Forgrace Youby David A. Anderson

Through heartwarming stories, Dr. Anderson shows us how we can extend extraordinary goodness to bless those who have hurt us. He presents the radical concept of “forgraceness”: grace beyond forgiveness. Utilizing stories and scripture, he reminds us that God can enable us to not only pardon real-life hurts, but to seek the good of others. Through this idea, our rela-tionships can experience amazing transformation and redemptive healing. This is something that requires

God’s help to accomplish, and through this book, Dr. Anderson hopes to show us how to accomplish true forgraceness with the help of God.

It should go without saying: Easter is the most important event in the worship life of the Church. Whether it’s at a Holy Saturday Vigil, a Sunrise Service, morning worship, or evening vespers, Easter defines who we are and commands our celebrations of God’s worthship. And so it has been the tradition of the Church through the centuries to come together in worship of the Risen Christ. Every Lord’s Day we celebrate Easter in some way great or small. This is one of many reasons why Christians are known as Easter people. What would happen to our faith if we didn’t have Easter at its very heart? Well, we would lose the most important part of the story. Without the resurrection, the crucifix-ion has no meaning beyond an unjust death at the hands of sin and oppression. Without the empty tomb, the cross remains a symbol of the triumph of hate, division, and death. Without Easter, Christ is just another martyr brought down by Rome. We are Easter people – it defines our faith! How can we think about Easter, then, on any given Sunday and not just one Sunday or one season? Maybe a good place to start is at the Table where we see not only gifts of bread and wine, gifts reminding us of Christ’s brokenness and outpouring of his life for us, but also gifts that come from grain and vine which nourish us and bring us to life, gifts that remind us of seed sown only to rise up and fruits that are connected to one another from a common source of life and renewal. The bread and cup show us that in sharing we can overcome any hardship or adversity, that the love found in an upper room cannot be stopped by the cross, and that we will never be alone on the road ahead – Christ will always be with us and inviting us to share in his resurrection each and every time we gather to worship, re-member, and go to love and serve in his name as Easter people. See you Sunday!

I was watching Mike and Meredith Miller in church Sunday, with their granddaughter, Addie. Such adoring looks! No wonder, she is adorable! Mike helps Kay

Thompson and me pass out snack packs, and we get to hear a lot about Addie.

Michael
