WHAT IS IPA?
Authentic: uses real-world tasksPerformance-Based: language and
cultural knowledge used in communicative asks
Based on 3 modes of communication: Interpretative, interpersonal, presentational
Integrated: communication used with other standard goal areas
Show developmental proficiency progress: novice, intermediate, advanced…
Blend with classroom instruction & experience

ACTFL Proficiency Levels
Foreign Service Institute Proficiency Scale
1 ILR Level 0 – No proficiency2 ILR Level 1 – Elementary proficiency
3 ILR Level 2 – Limited working proficiency4 ILR Level 3 – Professional working proficiency
5 ILR Level 4 – Full professional proficiency6 ILR Level 5 – Native or bilingual proficiency
The following ACTFL Proficiency Interview Ratings represent levels of expected performance for language learners who complete full-time intensive and/or immersion, proficiency-based languagetraining under the supervision of an instructor and 1-4 students.
How long does it take to become proficient?

SHIFT IN L2 INSTRUCTIONCHANGE IN ASSESSMENT IN L2
Shrum and Glisan (2010) describe a paradigm shift in assessment practices in the world language classroom. In the old paradigm, the purpose of assessment was simply to evaluate language learners and assign grades.
The new paradigm identifies multiple purposes of assessment:
To assess learner progress in proficiency To assess attainment of the National
Standards To guide and improve student
performance To evaluate and inform instruction and
program design To make a seamless connection
between instruction and assessment (p. 396)
Traditional vs Integrated Performance-Based Assessment (IPA)

Traditional IPA
IPA evaluates students’ use of language in the three modes of communication. (carla.com)

Formative and Summative Assessment
Formative: assessment FOR learning(quick/informal check for understanding)
Summative: assessment OF learning(formal measure of achievement of
instructional goals)http://carla.umn.edu/assessment/vac/WhyAssess/p_2.html
PLANNING AN IPA UNIT
Keep in mind the ultimate proficiency goals and objectives which are appropriate to the age and grade of the students.
https://www.tn.gov/education/instruction/academic-standards/world-language-standards.html
Remember, with regular FLES programs, a realistic goal is the novice level.
Use the ACTFL Can-Do statements in unit and lesson plans.
Always use cultural and language-appropriate resources.
