Broadcast’s Need for Speed

Rapidly adopt new or upgraded

production, storage, and distribution

capabilities

Quickly deploy new models for

monetizing media consumption

Swiftly add capacity or shift distribution

to adapt to changing sources of demand

Broadcasters are being asked to:

What’s Slowing Broadcast Down

Rigid transport and storage

infrastructure

Isolated, incompatible

systems requiring physical

replacement

Inflexibility and inadequate

intelligence at the network

transport level

Capturing New Transitions

Transition to IP from SDI10110101 1001010110

101010101010

• Ready for today’s new formats and data rates

• Increased bandwidth with Ethernet

• Deterministic networking

x86 Workloads• Move away from specialized, dedicated,

expensive HW

• Towards general purpose, low cost compute and storage

Cloud Architectures• Software Defined Networking (SDN), not manual

• Application Policy Driven Infrastructure

• Treat the platform as reusable pools of resources

Traditional Network Architecture

Three tiers: Access, Aggregation and Core

L2/L3 boundary at the aggregation

Physical design and logical design are the same

Application workload is localized to the Aggregation Block

Network services localized to the applications running on servers to the physical pod

Changing Traffic Patterns

• Mostly North-South traffic flows

• Over-subscription acceptable for client-server type of applications

• Poor link utilization. Spanning Tree blocks ports

Siloed Data Center

• Mix of North-South and East-West traffic flows

• Virtualization increases L2 Domains

• Spanning Tree blocking affects scalability

Buffer Requirements in Spine/Leaf Design

DC Leaf

DC Spine

Buffer Requirements on Spine

• Need sufficient on-chip buffer for burst

absorption

• Don’t need huge buffer for consistent

congestion

Buffer Requirements on Leaf Layer:

• Need Scratch buffer for link mismatch and

many-to-one flows.

Use Case : Video Editing

UDP packets

Does not tolerate packet loss well

Traffic throughput depends on the Video file

resolution.

Editing stations : 1G and at 10G

Editing multiple files simultaneously

Hyper Large Buffers would lead to jitter and unpredictable

application performance

• Propagation ( <500 nSec)

• Serialization ( <40-400 nSec)

• Packet switching (<nSec-uSecs)

• Buffering/Queueing

Non-Blocking Multicast

• ECMP could result in oversubscription of link

• Broadcast industry requires non blocking IP transport

• Algorithm involves assigning tokens to a link based on its bandwidth and the size of a flow (provided via CLI - 1Mbps granularity)

• 100G link would have 100k tokens. 1.5G flow would consume 1500 tokens

• Once a flow is forwarded across a link tokens are depleted

• When no sufficient tokens are available, flow not forwarded across the link thereby assuring no packet drops
