PharmacoEconomics & Outcomes News 390 - 23 Nov 2002 IOM report calls for repair of US public health system A new report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) states that a national public health council needs to be established by the US Congress to review the impact of policies on health, and to advise the government on public health issues, says the BMJ. The latest report shows that the US public health system is in grave disarray, a state similar to that found in the previous report in 1988. Weaknesses in the public health system have been exposed by recent events in the US, such as the anthrax scare and bioterrorism threats, according to the BMJ. Improved organisation, more reliable funding and greater coordination with other government agencies are required to improve the current public health situation, says the report. Marwick C.
