IOM report calls for repair of USpublic health system
A new report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM)states that a national public health council needs to beestablished by the US Congress to review the impact ofpolicies on health, and to advise the government onpublic health issues, says the BMJ.
The latest report shows that the US public healthsystem is in grave disarray, a state similar to that foundin the previous report in 1988. Weaknesses in the publichealth system have been exposed by recent events in theUS, such as the anthrax scare and bioterrorism threats,according to the BMJ. Improved organisation, morereliable funding and greater coordination with othergovernment agencies are required to improve thecurrent public health situation, says the report.Marwick C.
