As a man walked a desolate beach onecold morning he began to see anotherfigure, far in the distance. Slowly thetwo approached each other, and he

could make out a local native who kept leaningdown, picking something up and throwing it outinto the water. Time and again he hurled thingsinto the ocean.

As the distance between them continued to narrow, the man could see that the native was picking upstarfish that had been washed upon the beach andone at a time, was throwing them back into thewater.

Puzzled, the man approached the native and askedwhat he was doing. “I’m throwing these starfishback into the ocean. You see, it is low tide rightnow and all of these starfish have been washed uponto the shore. If I don’t throw them back into thesea, they’ll die up here from lack of oxygen.”

“But there must be thousands of starfish on thisbeach,” the man replied. “You can’t possibly get toall of them. There are just too many. And thissame thing is probably happening on hundreds ofbeaches all up and down this coast. Can’t you seethat you can’t possibly make a difference?”

The local native smiled, bent down and picked upanother starfish, and as he threw it back into thesea he replied, “ Made a difference to that one.”

Each of us is but one person, limited with our ownresources. We may feel there is so much to bedone, and yet we have so little to give.

When we leave this shore, there will still be thou-sands of starfish stranded on the beach. Perhapswe can’t change the whole world, but as Rotarianswe can help change one person’s whole world. One at a time. We can make a difference!

Warmest regards.PP Mike Tung

Besides the usual weekly meeting that we have,we have a joint meeting between three avenues ofservice, International, Vocational and Youth onWednesday last week.

The highlight of the meeting was an internationalfood and cultural fair to be held at the BerjayaUniversity College of Hospitality and an Art Com-petition to be held and organised by the Youth Ser-vice.

During the same meeting, PDG Paul Lee gave usan idea modeled after ‘THE ONE’ project of Dis-trict 3450. After listening to it, Director SandySoh was so moved that she agreed immediately tochair a similar project in Pudu to honour selflessMalaysians who are dedicated to serve the com-munity. This brings to my mind that PP DatoMuslim joined us at the last meeting despite thefact that he was fasting. As the web master, hecame for the meeting and to take some photo-graphs for uploading.

Our fund raising chairman is appealing to all mem-bers to contribute generously for goodies bags tobe given out to the 150 orphans who will come towatch the movie ‘Wolverine’ on Saturday July 27,2013.

We welcome our guest speaker HE the Ambassa-dor Marco V. Balarezo, the Ambassador of Peru,to our meeting and to speak to us today.

SPEAKER’S CV

Mr Billy Lai spoke in a clear voice to command the attention of the audience. It was a very interesting talk about Re-insurance for which not many of us really have much previous knowledge or understood its workings; although havingheard of it. In the limited time of 20 minutes, however, Mr Lai managed to educate us sufficiently. And he was kindenough to pass on his PowerPoint file for our benefit.

This is our major Fund Raising project for the year. It is as action-packed thriller based on the X-men. Follow thisreview by “Rotten Tomatos” below:

“The gruff, adamantium-clawed Marvel superhero Wolverine strikes out on his own in this X-Men spin-off starringseries regular Hugh Jackman.

The story gets under way as the boy who will become Wolverine makes a shocking discovery about his family blood-line, and gains a brother in the process. Flash forward to find the mutant siblings battling side by side through twoworld wars and Vietnam -- where they are sentenced to death for killing a commanding officer -- and Logan (HughJackman) and hisbrother, Victor Creed (aka Sabretooth, played by Liev Schreiber,) have joined a top-secret govern-ment task force.

When their targets begin to include innocent civilians, conscientious Logan escapes to the Canadian Rockies, where hebuilds a home with pretty schoolteacher Kayla Silverfox (Lynn Collins.) Informed by his old commanding officerWilliam Stryker (Danny Huston) that the members of his old team are being targeted for death, Logan is heartbrokenwhen Victor finds and kills Kayla. Vowing revenge, Logan agrees to take part in a dangerous experiment that will fusehis bones with a powerful metal alloy called adamantium, which makes him virtually indestructible and gives him thestrength needed to defeat his powerful brother. Subsequently betrayed by Stryker, Logan (now Wolverine) sets out tofind his blood-lusting brother and stop the cycle of violence once and for all.

Along the way, the temperamental hero is joined by fellow mutants John Wraith (Will.i.Am) and Remy LeBeau (akaGambit, played by Taylor Kitsch.) But before Wolverine can seek vengeance against Striker and his brother, he'llhave to do battle with Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) a formidable mutant instilled with many powers. ~ Jason Buchanan,Rovi”

grettable. He feels that vocationalservice stands first among all theavenues of service and steps mustbe taken to regain its pre-eminencewithout which Rotary would lose itstrademark.

The second issue on which he took exception is themanner in which we carry out our service projects. Hewants us to be hands on and be personally involved inprojects which used to be the case without exceptionin the early years of Rotary.

He wants us to go back to the basics. He wants us todiscard the hands-off attitude and using hand-outs inthe name of projects.

The other issues which he was unhappy was about thepoor attendance at meetings and the slow erosion ofcore values. He wants us to reinforce the 4- Way test.

These are the words of wisdom from an eminentstatesman and former RI president. He must havebeen pained to see the path Rotary is taking and thismust have prompted him to speak out. We could dowell to heed his call and take the necessary steps.

DISTRICT NEWS

Dear friends,

I was among the delegates of District 3300 who at-tended the Regional Rotary International Meeting,Seminar and training in Bangkok from May 31st to2nd June in Bangkok. This meeting was for zone 6Bcomprising 10 districts from Bangladesh (2), Pakistanand Afghanistan (2), Thailand, Cambodia and Laos (4)and District 3300 and 3310.

The whole seminar was an eye opener what with therapid progress of Rotary in countries like Bangladeshwith 192 clubs, polio eradication efforts in Pakistanand the efforts being carried out in all the other zoneB Districts. I realized we have similar problems espe-cially with membership and other related issues.

The closing ceremony of the training was graced byPRIP Bhitchai Rattakul who in his usual dignifiedmanner gave us a wonderful send-off speech. PRIPBhitchai expressed his sadness over a number ofissues plaguing Rotary that troubles him tremen-dously.

The first issue was on the lack of importance given toVocational Service by many clubs which he finds re-

Dear Club Presidents, Secretaries, Club Rotary Foun-dation Chairs and Fellow Rotarians

Recently, The Rotary Foundation’s new grant modelwas launched; designed to help all of us make a greaterimpact in the world.

Our district grant will return more of the money we’vecontributed to the Foundation for projects that we cancarry out here in our local communities or abroad.

Global grants will give us more funding to expand ourhumanitarian projects, provide scholarships, and spon-sor vocational training teams—all of which will have asignificant lasting effect on the host communities.

We also have the option to participate in packagedgrants, which are designed and funded by the Founda-tion with a strategic partner.

This year, our district will participate in District andGlobal Grants.

If your club is qualified, you can apply for District andGlobal Grants. Please note that the closing date is 31August 2013.

Dear Fellow Club Officers & Rotarians,

All throughout these past few years, there are many Club Officers and Rotarians who are still having prob-lems with the "Member Access". As I know that the training sessions at the District Assembly is not suffi-cient to give you everything about the uses or how to register yourselves into the "Member Access," due totime constraints.

I would not say that I have some experience or very good at using the "Member Access," but after beingseven times as the Club Secretary I have encountered many Rotarians in our District who needed help inregistration or asking "how to pay RI Due" etc.

The "Member Access" is forever changing, so I am still learning... last year was different from this year. But anyway, for those who have been at it in the past... no problems.

If you have any question, please do not hesitate to call or email to me. I will try to reply you within 24hours.

Yours in Rotary,

"Foundation Goals" - 2013-14 Rotary Foun-dation Trustee Chair Dong Kurn Lee

Good morning.

It is a great joy to see so many friendsand fellow Rotarians here at our inter-national convention.

A Rotary convention is the high point of the yearfor every Rotarian fortunate enough to attend. It isan opportunity to reflect on the year that is aboutto end, to see old friends and make new ones. Andit is a chance to look forward, toward the year thatwe will soon begin.

As incoming Rotary Foundation chair, I am look-ing forward to an exciting year of change, growth, and new achievements for our Rotary Foundation.

In 2013-14, we have set four goals for our Founda-tion. They are: eradicate polio, build ownershipand pride in our Foundation, launch our new grantmodel, and engage in innovative partnerships andprojects.

Our first goal is no surprise to any of you, since ithas been our first goal for many years. We allknow that we must eradicate polio. We have comeso far: We have immunized over 2 billion children, and endemic poliovirus is gone from all but threecountries in the world. My friends, we are "thisclose" to ending polio.

But this last effort is the hardest. The budget forthe new strategic plan is US$5.5 billion. We stillhave a significant funding gap. And although newoutbreaks of polio are decreasing, every one mustbe met with a response that is immediate, massive, and costly.

In Korea, we have a proverb:괴로움이 있으면 즐

거움도 있다.

It means: After hardships come happiness. Polioeradication is hard work, but when we have fin-ished — when we have eradicated polio — we willhave achieved something wonderful.

RI NEWS

And that is why eradicating polio is our first Foun-dation goal.

Our second goal is building ownership and pride inour Foundation. PolioPlus is successful becauseRotarians believe in our commitment and supportit financially. We give to polio eradication becausewe see very clearly what our money is doing andwhat we are helping to achieve. We all take pridein knowing that the money we give is helping tobuy a polio-free world.

But many Rotarians do not have the same prideand ownership of the Foundation's PermanentFund and Annual Fund. We are still falling shortof our goal of Every Rotarian, Every Year. Why?Because Rotarians do not know what good worksthe Permanent Fund and Annual Fund enable us todo.

The Permanent and Annual Fund are what makeRotary International more than just an associationof Rotary clubs. They allow us to share our re-sources, work together, and bring our work to ahigher level. The greater our Foundation's re-sources, the greater our own ability as Rotarians tomeet the needs of our communities.

Our goal for the annual fund in 2013-14 will be$120 million.

If we want the freedom to be ambitious in our ser-vice, we must know that we have a strong Founda-tion supporting us. And if we want to know thatRotary will endure, we need a strong PermanentFund — for whatever lies ahead. In order to en-hance the Permanent Fund, a new Fund Develop-ment Committee and Endowment/Major Gifts ad-visers have been appointed to assist in this effort.

Our third goal is full rollout of the grant model thatwe have been calling Future Vision. We have beenvery excited to see how well the Future VisionPlan has worked with the pilot districts. The feed-back so far has been very positive, and we havehad the time and opportunity to make the neces-sary improvements and adjustments. Rotarians inpilot clubs have found the new structure easier tounderstand, and to use.

And we have seen as well that their feeling ofcommitment to our Foundation has becomestronger.

Soon, we will all be using the new grant model. Iam confident that this is a positive change for Ro-tary. We know that it will be a very large change. And we know that such change is always difficult. But we also know that it is the right move at theright time for Rotary. The new model will enableus to help more people, in more lasting ways. Itwill ensure that our good work will last and havethe greatest impact. As stewards of our Founda-tion, this is our goal, and our responsibility.

Our fourth goal is to engage in innovative partner-ships and projects, to expand our reach and ourimpact.

Rotary has a tremendous reach, and can do a greatdeal. But one thing that we all know in Rotary isthat we can do more together than we can alone. When we work with local NGOs and other organi-zations, we gainmore knowledge and more insight. We add to ourresources and our abilities. And we build morebridges of understanding, friendship, and coopera-tion.

By partnering with others throughout the world,we often achieve more, and learn more, than weset out to do. This is an important way that webuild Peace Through Service.

We have learned, through our long history in polioeradication, how effective such partnerships canbe. Our many global partners have made polioeradication possible and have helped us to achievea great deal of good along the way. This is an im-portant lesson, and it is one that we must build onin the years ahead.

Our theme for the new Rotary year is Engage Ro-tary, Change Lives. It is time for all of us to en-gage our Rotary service — and engage our RotaryFoundation. It is time for us all to recognize thatall of the good that Rotary does begins with eachof us — with the work we do in our clubs, and ourgenerosity to our Rotary Foundation. President-elect Ron has asked all of us to remember that theRotary Foundation is our Foundation. The Founda-tion is there to support our service, and it is ourresponsibility to support it. In this way, all of us

can be a part of all of the wonderful work that Ro-tarians are doing all over the world.

My friends, I look forward with you to a wonderfulyear of service, and new beginnings for our Founda-tion. I wish you all an enjoyable convention and anew Rotary year — of Doing Good in the World, aswe Engage Rotary, Change Lives.

Thank you.
