Abraham offered a sacrifice with Melchizedek, the high

priest of Salem (later Jerusalem). Abraham gave one-

tenth of his possessions to Melchizedek, but

Melchizedek offered Abraham an offering of bread and

wine (Genesis 14:18-20).

Later the Temple in Jerusalem was built in that same

location. There the priests had a table on which they

would place on offering of bread and wine to God. This

bread is often referred to as the Showbread. It is also

named the Bread of the Presence (Exodus 25:30). One

interesting thing about this Hebrew word for

“presence” is that it can also be translated as “face.”

So, the Showbread in the temple is also the Bread of

the Face of God.

In that same city, Jesus offered bread and wine at the

Last Supper. He called it his Body and his Blood. He

gave his disciples a special gift of himself, so that he

would continue to be present with them in a special

way. This is still our most precious gift, by which we

too experience the living

presence of Christ in our

midst.

Some gifts are too good to

keep to ourselves—would

you consider inviting a

friend to our special time of

adoration this Lent? Who

knows what difference it

could make in their life?

Christmas In Lent? The Annunciation of the Lord

A High Holy Day

The Solemnity of the Annunciation, Saturday, March 25th, commemorates a sublime moment in the history of time, the moment when the Second Divine Person of the most Holy Trinity assumed human nature in the womb of the Virgin Mary.

As this is a Solemnity, so our Lenten penance obligations are lifted. Forecasting the blessed event of Christmas, it is a great time to do something special as a family.
