“Health is a value in itself.
It is also a precondition for
economic prosperity.
People’s health influences
economic outcomes in terms
of productivity, labour supply,
human capital and public
spending.”

“The primary goal of health (care) policy is to maximize the health of the population within the limits of the available resources, and within an ethical framework built on equity and solidarity principles”.

Waar ligt de grens?
Three approaches:
• HISTORICAL +/- 50,000€ per QALY:
= cost-effectiveness of caring for a dialysis patient
(+/- 200,000€ to gain +/- 4 QALYs)
• Desaigues et al (2007) : willingness to pay 40,000 € for a healthy life year.
• WHO: GDP per capita (e.g. Belgium = €36000)

Rol voor de werkgever!
-
Facettenbeleid
• Principe: health is in all policies

Probleem: perspectief
gezondheid
En wat levert
dat op? Wat is
mijn ROI?

For all ages, poor emotional health, inadequate exercise, tobacco use
were consistently associated with both absenteeism and presenteeism.
1. Het probleem (h)erkennen
-
2. Inzien dat er een effect kan zijn
19
Lifestyle intervention reduced the risk of work days lost by 64.3% compared to usual
care (annual accumulation: UC: 3.49 days vs. LI: 0.92 days.
Lifestyle intervention decreased the risk of disability days by 87.2% compared to usual
care (annual accumulation: UC: 5.3 days vs. LI: 0.94 days.

20
Workplace physical activity and yoga
programmes are associated with a significant
reduction in depressive symptoms and anxiety,
respectively. Their impact on stress relief is less
conclusive.
-
21
Employees who telecommuted ≤8 hours per month were
significantly less likely than nontelecommuters to experience
depression. There was no association between telecommuting
and stress or nutrition.
-
3. Inzien dat een positieve ROI mogelijk is
22
Across all overweight and obese employees, 5% weight loss would result in a
reduction in total annual costs (medical plus absenteeism) of $90 per person.
-
Maar….
The relationship between return on investment and quality of study methodology in workplace health promotion programs.
(Baxter& coll. 2014)
High-quality studies (n = 18) had a smaller mean ROI, 0.26 ± 1.74 (.23-.30), compared to moderate (n = 16) 0.90 ± 1.25 (.90-.91) and low-quality (n = 27) 2.32 ± 2.14 (2.30-2.33) studies

Discussie
• Investeren in (geestelijke) gezondheid loont!
