Warm Up:Truck and trailers – in 20m x 20m grid square
In pairs – numbered 1 and 2 No.1 runs with ball (truck) No.2 follows closely (trailer) Teacher dictates how ball will be transferred to No.2. options are 1) Pop Pass left
2) Pop Pass right 3) Score a “Try” (ball placed stationery on ground) 4) Drop to ground and Pop Pass from lying position
After ball has been off-loaded, No.2 becomes the “truck and as such roles are reversed.
Follow with teacher-led stretches

ACTIVITIES/DEMONSTRATEActivity 1:Keep Away – groups of 5/6 in 10m x 10m squares
Attackers attempt to keep the ball away from the defender Defender tries to touch the player in possession to tackle and end the game Swap defender after each tackle/dropped ball/ball out of grid
Progressions/adaptations

X – AttackerO - Defender
Attackers can be either static or mobile when in possession of the ball Passes must be made below head height Create a second defender
REVIEWActivity 2: Game: American Football style game
Be Reflective and Resourceful What did you do to keep the ball away from the defender in the previous game? How can you use/adapt this experience in order to play this new game? Which skills work best for you – which are you strengths ad weaknesses?
Set out pitches 20m x 10m Teams of 3/4 Players attempt to score points by moving the ball into opponent’s “end zone” Players can run or pass ball in any direction to move it Two handed touch constitutes a tackle When tackled, player in possession must stop and make a pass within 3 seconds If the ball is dropped, goes out of the pitch area or intercepted, possession
passes to the other team
Progressions/adaptations: Players cannot run when in possession of ball Set number of passes must be completed before attempting to score/all players
must touch ball before attempting to score Ball must be passed (not run) into the end zone

CONNECT THE LEARNINGWarm Up:
Ball starts off at the feet of Y Y taps the ball with their foot and passes to the player next to them The middle players run with the ball, passing it to their right as they move up the
pitch At the end of the pitch, the ball is passed to Z, who restarts the process again Swap Y and Z after each full cycle

Follow with teacher & pupil-led stretches
ACTIVITIES/DEMONSTRATEActivity 1: Dodge and Pass
Players run with ball (X), passing down the line whilst avoiding the passive defenders (Y)
Use dodging and moving skills along with passing to avoid collision with defenders
Timing is vital – time your runs and passes depending on where the defenders are
Passive defenders move side to side irrespective of what the runners are doing – they DO NOT attempt to intercept ball/tackle runners
Y
X X
Z
X
X
Y
XYX
Progressions/adaptations: Runners have a set number of passes to make before reaching the end line Passes must be made “backwards” i.e. behind the line of play
VIDEO LINK
Activity 2: 2v1
2 attackers attempt to score a Try by beating a defender Defender touches ball carrier with two hands to tackle Encourage players to pass backwards Dropped ball/knock-on = restart Change defender after each attempt
Adaptations: Allow passing in any direction Allow attackers “two tackles” – after 1st tackle is
made, pass the ball, 2nd tackle ends the attack Overload the attack, create 3v1 to encourage success

REVIEW
Activity 3: 3v2
As Activity 2 but includes extra defender Each defender has an area to defend, if the attackers are not in their zone, the
defender is inactive

Learning Activities
CONNECT THE LEARNINGWarm Up:
Depending on numbers; put group into one or two 10m x 10m squares Give balls to half of the pupils in the square(s) The aim is to pass and receive the ball as quickly and accurately as possible on
the move whilst avoiding contact with all players. When pupils are in possession of the ball, they must try to safely pass it to
someone without a ball as soon as they can When not in possession, pupils must attempt to receive a pass as soon as they
can
VIDEO LINK
ACTIVITIES/DEMONSTRATEActivity 1 – 3vs2 with 1 passive and 1 active defender
Attackers (X) attempt to score behind the end line Y is a passive defender who can only move side to side without attempting to
impede the attackers One the attackers have passed Y, they are out of the game Z is an active defender who comes into play once the attackers have passed
halfway. If Z touches the player in possession of the ball with two hands, the attack is
over and the game restarts from the beginning
XXX
Y
Z
Progressions/adaptations Increase difficulty by allowing Z to enter the game before the attackers have
passed Y Make playing area wider/narrower Allow/disallow forward passing

REVIEWActivity 2 – 2vs2 game
X are the defending team ▲ are the attackers The defending team kick the ball off along the ground, they cannot move until
one of the attacking players has picked it up As soon as the attackers have the ball, one of the defenders must run and touch
the TRY LINE Attackers attempt to score over the TRY LINE whilst defenders attempt to tag
them to tackle Upon the 1st tag being made, the attacker in possession must stop and pass the
ball to the other If a 2nd tag is made before a try is scored, the attack is over and the game
restarts from the beginning Switch teams around – potential to play as a 2-a-side competition

CONNECT THE LEARNINGWarm Up:
In groups of 4/5 One pupil holds contact pad approx 1m in front of group Teacher leads warm-up, moving through various methods of hitting pad 10 quick punches, 10 side taps, Hit and drive (with ball/without ball) Teaching points for hit and drive:1. low starting position2. drive upwards into pad (wide base)3. contact with shoulder (keep ball away from the pad)4. arms around pad (ball in two hands)5. head to side
VIDEO LINK
ACTIVITIES/DEMONSTRATEActivity 1 – Bash the padsBe Responsible
There will be an increased amount of contact in this game You must decide how much contact is appropriate for players in your group You must be responsible for your team’s safety as well as your own
In 20m x 10m grid 2 pupils with contact pads defend at halfway Attackers attempt to score try behind end line Attackers can run, dodge, pass or go through the defenders Attack stops when ball is dropped or passed forward or an attacker runs/gets tackled
into touch Change attackers and defenders after each try or stoppage
Activity 2: Tackling a partner
Pupils select a partner of similar build (someone they feel comfortable working with) Teach side tackle to start Low body angle Eyes on contact area – mid thigh Contact with shoulder Head behind – “cheek to cheek” Wrap arms around opponent Twist so that you end up on top of the contact – never underneath
VIDEO LINK
Activity 3: Kabbaddi
Teams take alternating turns to “raid” their opponent’s half ▲ goes first by entering opponents half and attempts to “tag” a player before returning
to their own half X’s attempt to stop the raider tagging them and then returning to safety by tackling
them to the ground or out of the pitch area Raiders can return to safety at any time with no penalty Points are scored by tagging and returning to safety without being tackled Only one raider per attack and a maximum of two defenders per tackle
Adaptations/progressions: Time limit imposed on raiders Include a ball for raiders to carry and use as a “tagger”
REVIEWActivity 4: Last man standing
Are you Resilient? Can you find the determination to make tackles as part of an outnumbered team? When you get tackled can you pick yourself up and work hard to tackle others?
Defenders start at halfway Attackers try to run past defenders to safety Defenders attempt to tackle attackers to ground or out of the pitch area Attackers are not safe until the have passed the end line If tackled, attackers join the defence Do not: jump into contact; tackle above shoulders; set off until defenders shout “GO”

ACTIVITIES/DEMONSTRATEActivity 1 – Ball steal game
In 20m x 10m grid – two teams – a ball behind each end line Opposing teams of 2/3 attempt to steal the other’s ball A try scored behind your own start line will end the game Opponents tackle to end an attack If tackled, you must release the ball and return to your start line You may not touch the ball you are defending
VIDEO LINK
Activity 2: 1 v 1
Set up thin channels Ball placed between two end lines Players take turns to attack and defend A Try, tackle to the ground or play leaving the pitch area ends the attack
VIDEO LINK
Activity 3: 2v2
X attackers ▲ Defenders Pairs take turns to attack and defend Score tries over the opponent’s end line Tackle to the ground or ball carrier moving outside the pitch area ends the attack
REVIEWActivity 4: 4v4 game
New Information – Presenting the ball & Rolling Away When you are tackled to the ground, you must release the ball as quickly as possible When you tackle someone to the ground, you must let them go and get away from
the contact area as soon as possiblePresenting
Make sure that you fall KNEE, HIP, SHOULDER. Your body should be parallel to and facing towards your own try line
Place the ball at arms length using two hands Keep one hand on top of the ball to secure it Use your other hand to protect your head

Roll Away Make your tackle Let go of the player once they are immobile on the ground Roll away to safety away from the contact Get back on your feet as quickly as possible and get back in the game!
Increase pitch area to 10mx30m As Activity 3, but now introduce more continuity When tackled, players present the ball Defenders must regroup in a line and wait for an attacker to pick up the ball

Rugby – Year 7 Continuity: Ruck
Learning Outcomes Key WordsBy the end of the lesson, pupils will be able to:(Must) Demonstrate the roles of ball carrier and supporting players at the Ruck(Should) Form a Ruck in order to restart play in a conditioned game(Could) Form a Ruck against active opposition following a tackle

Warm Up: Hit pads
Cycle through range of hitting activities to warm up shoulders and upper body along with jogging to and from padsAlso include:
Hit with ball, fall knee, hip, shoulder Hit in pairs – bind to partner, hit low, drive up
VIDEO LINK
ACTIVITIES/DEMONSTRATEActivity 1 – Basic Ruck against contact pad
Groups of 5 One player holds contact pad 5m from start line Ball carrier hits contact pad 2nd and 3rd support players follow closely, one shouts “DOWN” and ball carrier goes
to ground, presenting ball properly Support players bind together around waists and clear the contact pad, stepping
over the player on the ground SUPPORT PLAYERS MUST CLEAR THE CONTACT AREA BY MOVING DIRECTLY
FORWARD OVER THE BALL – NOT FROM THE SIDE OR FROM THE BACK – THIS WOULD BE “OFFSIDE”
last support player becomes “scrum half” who picks up the ball, scores behind end line, then returns to start line
Cycle through positions so that each pupil can achieve 1st learning outcome
VIDEO LINK
Activity 2: Progression
Similar set-up to Activity 1, but lay pad face-up on the ground Ball carrier this time drives onto the pad When carrier presents the ball, the support players must clear out the defender who can
attempt to get to the ball Scrum half again picks up and scores ENSURE THAT PLAYERS REMAIN ONSIDE
VIDEO LINK
Activity 3: More active progression for advanced groups
Remove contact pad and add another defender X1 this time makes a tackle in the tackle zone (then rolls away as in previous
learning) As the ball carrier presents the ball, X2 can attempt to get the ball and the
supporting attackers must clear out the Ruck area AGAIN WATCH FOR OFFSIDE. IF X2 ATTEMPTS TO GET BALL, THEY MUST
MOVE DIRECTLY FORWARDS NOT GO ROUND THE SIDE OR BACK OF THE CONTACT AREA
REVIEWActivity 4: 4v4 game with Ruck continuity
10m x 30m pitch area When tackled to the ground, play pauses so that a Ruck can form Tackled player presents the ball as before, tackler rolls away from the contact area A Ruck must form before play can continue Once the “Scrum half” has picked up the ball, the play begins again
Adaptation/Progression
Must be 2 support players to clear the ruck Use contact pads as tackling aid for less confident players – ruck forms in same way
following contact with the pad

ACTIVITIES/DEMONSTRATEActivity 1 – Basic Maul against contact pad
Groups of 3 Ball carrier hits the contact pad and stays on feet: take a BIG STEP into the
contact, keep body between pad and ball Support player arrives quickly and “locks off” the ball (drive with opposite shoulder
to the ball carrier) Support must arrive from behind the ball carrier – not at the side or in front –
this would be “OFFSIDE” Support player rips the ball from the original carrier who binds onto the support
player Drive forward keeping the legs pumping – attempt to drive the pad back over the
gain line
“Gain Line”
Change positions
VIDEO LINK
Activity 2: Progression into conditioned game
1 starts the game by tapping the ball with their foot and passing to 2 1 then runs to the far try line before they can become a defender 2 drives at the contact pad held by X 3 acts as 1st support player and forms the Maul 4 also joins the Maul and helps to drive the pad back over the gain line After the Maul has passed the gain line, either of the support players can strip the ball
and then attempt to score 1 has become an active defender and is “live” once the ball has been ripped from the
Maul – UNTIL BALL IS RIPPED FROM MAUL, THE DEFENDER MUST STAY BEHIND THE LINE OF THE PAD
Tackle ends the attack
Progressions/adaptations: If tackled, play can be restarted with Ruck or another Maul Pad holder can join game as second defender once Maul is over Remove the Contact Pad from the practice – this will enable the ball carrier to hit an
active opponent and also allow more able pupils attempt to achieve the 3rd learning outcome
REVIEWActivity 3: 5v5 game with full continuity
Be Reflective: Think back to your lessons on ball movement, contact and continuity How can you now combine these skills in this game? Many of the practices involved you operating in a set role – how will you do this as part
of a team in open play?
Line of run
Line of pass
When tackled to the ground, play pauses so that a Ruck can form Tackled player presents the ball as before, tackler rolls away from the contact area A Ruck must form before play can continue Once the “Scrum half” has picked up the ball, the play begins again If player is tackled and remains on feet a Maul may form and same principle applies –
once ball is ripped away or passed out of the back, play continues
