How to Use This Manual
Purpose
The purpose of this manual is to give users a better understanding ofportable applications, or portable apps as theyre sometimes called. Afterconsulting the manual, users should possess knowledge of many differentportable applications and also be aware of some of their functions. Theportable applications covered in this manual include Nvu Portable, FileZillaPortable, GIMP Portable, and OpenOffice.org Portable.
Recommended Steps for Using This Manual
1. Consult the table of contents to see a list of chapters and their pagenumbers. For a more specific search, consult the index located on thelast page of the manual.
2. Read the first page of the chapter for basic information on that portable
application. This page informs readers of the features of the application,potential users, and instructions for downloading of the program.
3. Refer to the pages that follow in the chapter for instructions on how toperform specific operations within the portable program. These pagesfeature tutorials with step-by-step instructions and screen shots that helpguide users through the world of portable apps.

Introduction to PortableApplications
What is a Portable Application?
Portable applications, or portable apps, are computer programs that canbe downloaded onto a portable device and used on almost any computer whenthe portable device is connected. Some examples of portable devices includeiPods, USB flash drives, portable hard drives, and compact discs.
How does it work?
After downloading a portable application onto your portable device,youll find that your work can be accessed from any computer equipped with
Windows. With a portable application, all of your work is saved within theportable app itself and can be accessed anywhere at any time your portabledevice is connected.
What are some of the features?
Depending on which portable application you download, you canexperience any number of portable possibilities. You can transport your entire
web browser with your list of favorites, carry an office program with yoursaved presentations ready to go for an afternoon lecture, or bring yourelectronic calendar along to the library for that group meeting.

About Nvu Portable
What Is It?Nvu (pronounced N-view) Portable is a web authoring program with features that make
creating and editing websites quick and easy. Knowledge of HTML is unnecessary, as Nvu does allthe coding for you. The portable version allows users to transport their work using USB flash drives,iPods, portable hard drives, and compact discs.
Who Uses It?Nvu Portable is a useful tool for both teachers and students. Students in the Technical and
Professional Communication program can use the software to create and edit web design projects at
home, on campus, and in the workplace. Teachers can use the software to edit their homepages andcourse websites in the office and at home without losing any of their work.
Where Can I Find It?You can find Nvu Portable on the Portable Application website:

Tutorial: Creating a Page with NvuPortable
For our example, we will be designing a biography page for a student in theTPC program.
Entering a Title
After opening Nvu Portable, click on any of the white space and begin entering textjust as you would in a word processor like Microsoft Word. For our example, we willuse About Me.
1. Highlight the title of your page.
2. From the paragraph formatting drop down menu which currently readsBody Text, select Heading 1. You may also select the larger A on thetoolbar to increase text size, or use the Format menu.
3. To center, underline, increase boldness, italicize, or change font color, usethe corresponding buttons on the toolbar.

Entering body text
1. After formatting the title of your page, space down two lines to beginentering the body text.
2. Enter this text just as you would in a word processor like Microsoft Word.
3. To change the formatting of your text, simply use the buttons located onthe toolbar. Clicking the black square allows you to change font color.
Helpful Hint!
It is recommended that you indent all text at least a small amount from
the edge of the page for a more professional look. To do this, highlight your text andselect the Indent Right button on the toolbar.

Changing Background Color
1. To change the background color of your page, select the Format menu.Scroll down to Page Colors and Background.
2. On the menu that appears, select the box next to Background.
1. A color menu will appear, giving you several background color choices.
2. Select your color and click OK. Press OK on the Page Colors andBackground menu.
3. Your page now appears with the background color of your choice.

Creating Links
1. To create a link on your page, highlight the text or graphic you wish to linkto another page.
2. On the toolbar, select the link button.
3. A new Link Properties window will appear.
4. In the Link Location blank, enter the address of your link using http://
and www. when appropriate.
5. Click OK.
6. Your text will now appear on your page as a link.

Before your images will appear on your soon-to-be uploaded page, you mustfirst upload the pictures themselves. It is a good idea to save all of your pages
and images to one folder on your computer and upload them with an FTPsimultaneously.
For the purpose of this assignment, we will pretend our image has alreadybeen uploaded.
1. To add a graphic to your page, first select the Image button from the
toolbar.
2. A new window will appear asking you to specify the location of your image.
3. Enter the address of your image in the image location box.
4. Click OK.
5. Your image will appear on your page.

Saving Your Page
1. To save the page as an .html file, select File and Save.
2. A box will appear, asking you for a title for the current page.
3. Enter a title and click OK. A new box will appear.
4. You will now name your page and save it to a folder on your computer.This name will appear in the address of your web page.
Helpful Hint!
Name your page something short, easy to remember, and lowercase.Dont use spaces within the name, but you can use letters, numbers, the tilde(~), the underscore (_), the hyphen (-), and the period (.).

What Is It?
FileZilla Portable is one of the many portable software programs available inportable applications. FileZilla is used to support all of the basic functions needed to browsa server and to transfer files.With FileZilla, you can take your server list with you bydownloading it on your USB Flash drive, iPod, portable hard drive or CD. You can useFileZilla on any computer without ever leaving your information behind.
Who Uses It?
FileZilla is useful for anyone on the go. It is especially helpful for TPC studentsbecause this software allows you to take your server list with you to use on any computerwithout leaving any personal information behind.
