INTRODUCTION TO OSPREY PRE-ACTIVITY: (One forty minute lesson) Students will be introduced to information and important facts about ospreys. Students will: 1. Read about ospreys. 2. Create fact sheets to be used in a post-activity osprey migration game. 3. Write a short vignette about one day in the life of a male osprey Introduction/Motivation: Video/web cam of osprey. 1. Osprey camera at Blackwater Reservoir, Maryland www.friendsofblackwater.org/osprey.html OR 2. Osprey nest camera at Loch Garten, Scotland www.rspb.org.uk/webcams/ Jigsaw Reading and Fact Sheet Activity: In groups of four each student will: 1. Be given reading material about ospreys differentiated according to reading ability. ( 1 low, 2 medium, 1 high level) 2. Based on the reading material, create a fact sheet of at least ten facts to be shared with the group and used for the post-activity osprey migration game. Assessment: Quick write about “A day in the life of a Male Osprey named __________”. ACTIVITY: OSPREY MIGRATION LESSON POST-ACTIVITY: (One forty minute lesson) Students will play the Osprey Migration game. The person who arrives “home” first wins the game.
