Creating a New User Profile

Why create a user profile?

Netscape allows many users to use the same version of netscape to check mail andkeep track of bookmarks. In this way, each user of the program may keep their bookmarksand email separate from other users. By creating a profile for each user, the program iseasier to manage for multiple users.

Creating the profile

1. Go to the Start menu and left click once. Move to the Programs menu and find theNetscape folder. Within the folder, find and select the User Profile Manager.

2. The following dialogue box will appear. Left click the New button.

3. The following dialogue box will appear. Left click the Next button.

4. The following dialogue box will appear. In the box labled Real Name, enter yourname. Move to the next field, labled Email Address, and enter your full email ad-dress. Left click the Next button.

Creating a New User Profile (cont.)5. In the field labled Profile Name, enter the name for the account. This name will laterappear on a list of accounts. You will probably want the profile name to match the lastname of the person who the account is for.

In the next field, which contains the directory information of where the new account willreside, make sure the string ends with the account’s last name (in this case, simon). Thiswill prevent you from replacing the default account. Left click the Next button.

6. In the first field of the next dialogue box, enter you name. In the second field, enter youremail address. In the last field, enter the name of your server (ie: staff.chuh.org). Left clickthe Next button.

7. The following dialogue box will appear. In the first field enter your user name (ie:l_simon). In the second field enter the server name again (staff.chuh.org). Left click theNext button.

8. The following dialogue box will appear. Left click the Finish button.

The box should disappear and Netscape Navigator should launch automatically.

Checking Mail with Netscape’s Mail FunctionWhen you receive email, it will remain on the CH-UH server until you retrieve it. You

can use any computer to retrieve your mail as long as you set up a new user profile first.To retrieve mail:

1. Click once on the Start button, thenon Netscape Communicator, then onNetscape Messenger. This will open the email feature of NetscapeCommunicator.

2. The following window will appear.

3. Click on the File menu, then Get Messages, then New.

OR

Click on the icon in the upper left hand corner.

4. The Password Entry Dialogue window will appear. Type in your password foryour email account, then click on OK.

6. The Getting New Messages window appears. Wait while the messages aretransferred from the server to your computer.

7. When the messages are finished transferring to your computer, the Inbox -Netscape Folder window will appear with your new messages listed..

To read a new message, double click on the envelope icon in front of the message.Notice that before you read the message there is an arrow in front of the envelope. Afteryou have finished reading the message, the arrow disappears. This indicates to you thatthe message has already been read. These messages will stay on this page until youeither save them to another file or delete them.

Deleting MessagesOnce you have read a message, you may want to keep it or delete it. If you keep it,

it will be stored in the Inbox - Netscape Folder and can be accessed at anytime by doubleclicking on the message. You can delete messages that you do not need to keep any-more. To delete:

1. Highlight the message that you want to delete by clicking once on it.

2. Click on the Delete button on the tool bar at the top of the Inbox - Netscape

Folder window.

Special Note: Remember, once you delete a messageyou will not be able to retrieve it again. Be careful not todelete something you need or is important!

Email AddressesTo send email, you must be sure that you have the correct email address. Email

addresses have two parts. Look at the following email address:

[email protected]

This is the domainname. It workslike a zip code andtells the computerwhat kind of serverto look for.

This is thename of theserver that theemail accountresides on.

This is the nameof the folder onthe server thatthe accountresides in.

Every email address must havethe @ symbol. If it does not, thecomputer cannot distinguishbetween the email account nameand the server.

This is the person whoowns the email account.

Creating and Sending a New Message

To create a new message:1. In the Inbox - Navigator Folder window, click once on the File menu, then on

New Message.

or

Click on the New Message icon on the tool in the Inbox - Navigator Folder window.

2. The Composition window will appear.

3. Type the email address of the person you are sending the mail to here.

4. Type the subject of your message here.

5. Type your message here.

6. When you have completed typing your message, click on the Send icon.

Note: Using the tab key will move you through each field in order.

Replying to Messages

To reply to a message:

1. Open the message.2. Click on the Reply icon on the tool bar.

3. A reply menu pops up. Reply to Sender means that the message that youtype will only go to the person who sent you the message. Reply to Senderand All Recipients means that the message will be sent to everyone whoreceived the origianl message.

4. When the Composition window appears, notice that the address of the personyou are replying to is already in the address area of the window, as well asthe subject. All you need to do is write your reply and then click on the Sendbutton.
