• A type of database system purposely created to help researchers manage their data (e.g. documents, photos, audio and video etc.) in one single platform/environment.

• NVivo is not a software to:

• transcribe your recorded audio/video from interviews.

• translate your transcriptions – back translation.

• create model or framework for your research.

• create your thesis’s story!

• NVivo only facilitates the process of creating your transcriptions, translation, model or framework as well as overall thesis’s story:

• Data reduction – 1. Data without meaning → information; 2. Information with meaning→ variables; 3. Variables with patterns→ models; or 4. Theorizes the whole patterns (models)

• The use of NVivo looks like a Microsoft products (e.g. Words) with exception that NVivo enables viewing and manipulating files (e.g. doc, xls, pdf, etc.) within it’s environment.

• Latest version of NVivo 10 supports mixed-methods analysis.

• NV 10 supports multiple users access – important for reliability check.

DO YOU NEED NVivo?

• Doing manually or using NVivo?

• Using word processor, refer article: Nancy (2004) Simplifying Qualitative Data Analysis Using General Purpose Software Tools. Field Methods, Vol. 16, No. 1. doi: 10.1177/1525822X03259227.

• Can avoid from *learning NVivo and technicality of software installation.

• Cheap, easy and you can immediately start without hassle.

• However, if you are dealing with large qualitative data (*more than 25), it is advisable to use NVivo or other reliable QDA software (e.g. ATLAS.ti).

• Basit (2003) compared personal experiences between manual and electronic coding and concluded “the choice will be dependent on the size of the project, the funds and time available, and the inclination and expertise of the researcher” (p. 143).

Basit, T. N. (2003). Manual or electronic? The role of coding in qualitative data analysis. Educational Research, 45(2),

143-154.

HOW CAN YOU START USING NVivo?

• You can get the latest version of NVivo via http://www.qsrinternational.com/

• However, you are only been given 30 days free trials and you have to purchase after the free trials are over.

• To help you use NVivo, you can download NVivo version 7 (cracked) and 10 (trial) that have been uploaded in the e-learning system:

9

HOW CAN YOU START USING NVivo?

• Please bear in mind that NVivo 7 has lack of utilities compared to version 10.

• You can not import video file, create chart and NVivo 7 does not support mixed-methods analysis.

• However, it helps you coding and finalize your analysis before you can start installing free trials 30-days NVivo 10.

• Additional notes and tutorials for version 7 and 10 can be downloaded from the e-learning system.

10

STARTING NVivo PROJECT

• Preparing raw data for NVivo 10.

• NVivo 10 supports different range of files (e.g. document, doc, rtf, txt; audio, video etc.)

• NVivo10 also provides services for transcription and translation (via TanscribeMe)

11

STARTING NVivo PROJECT

• Initial preparation prior creating NVivo project:

• Make sure all transcriptions are converted into plain text.

• Use different heading for question and normal style format for data.

13

STARTING NVivo PROJECT

• Practice:

• Create four documents of transcriptions (you can use your own files).

• Convert all files into non-table.

• Convert all files into heading 1 for questions and normal for answers.

• Save and import them into NVivo workplace.

14

NVivo Technical Reminders • NVivo 10 will NOT save by itself (or auto-save) – it will only remind

you to save (sometime can be so annoying).

• NV 10 database is based on Microsoft SQL Server therefore there is no temporary file for your project while you are working with it.

• So, damage to the project file (or corrupted) may cause it to be UNREADABLE.

• Save REGULARLY and BACKUP (make multiple copies of project files).

• Remember, the more sources you import, the bigger the project file is, the bigger memory used, and the slower it will starts.

15

ORGANIZATION OF DATA-SOURCES

• Before you begin analyzing your qualitative data, you need to organize all raw data via source panel in NV 10.

• NV 10 sources include internals, externals, memos and framework matrices.

• Internal are sources that are created and imported IN/INTO your NVIVO project.

• External are sources that the file of sources that are in our computer or elsewhere (e.g. website) but not embedded in the NVIVO project.

• Memos are your (reflective) writing of whatever you want to record (you yourself as one of the source).

• Framework matrices only provide you with a table that is empty so you can summarise the intersecting content.

16

ORGANIZATION OF DATA-SOURCES

• Sources can be imported or created via NV 10.

• They can be documents, audio files, videos, images, datasets or web pages.

• You can create multiple folder for different data.

Page 17: INTRODUCTION TO•To help you use NVivo, you can download NVivo version 7 (cracked) and 10 (trial) that have been uploaded in the e-learning system: 9 ... can start installing free

17

ORGANIZATION OF DATA-SOURCES • Sources also can be given a Source

Classification (birth certificate):

• For sources, these usually relate specifically to the type of source, date of collection, etc., rather than the particular characteristics of who or what provided the source.

• Source classifications may include interviews, focus groups, journal articles etc.

• Classification sheets enable you to see/edit all the items assigned to a particular classification and see the attribute values for each item.

• Creating by adding attributes

ORGANIZATION OF DATA-SOURCES

• Creating sources classification:

• Creating by importing table (Excel, .xls)

20

PLAYING WITH DATA-CREATING NODES

• Nodes are containers for references (data) from sources while Coding is the process of assigning references (data) from sources to node.

• There are multiple ways of making nodes, either as you are working through the text (in vivo) or when you are just thinking about the categories you might need (tree nodes, nodes that can be arranged in hierarchical format).

• You also can create an auto coding for data in structured format.

• Sources for auto coding need to be specially prepared using Word’s heading styles to indicate the passages to be coded.

• All passages to be coded at the same level should be given the same Style.

21

PLAYING WITH DATA-CREATING NODES

• Why use Auto-coding?

• Simply because we don’t have time of the world (joke).

• By assigning the style in the documents, you can easily manipulate the documents by using auto-code in NV 10.

• Auto code will look for the style you want to group from different sources and code it in nodes that it will create automatically.

Cut selected nodes

25

UNDERSTANDING YOUR DATA

• It takes times to understand your data - the ‘story’ or ‘big picture’.

• Usually you have to organize your data (nodes) into logical way, so you can make sense of them and continue re-coding and refining your nodes.
