SHALE GAS

INTRODUCTION

Shale gas is natural gas that is found trapped within shale formations. Shale gas has

become an increasingly important source of natural gas in the United States since the start

of this century, and interest has spread to potential gas shales in the rest of the world. In

2000 shale gas provided only 1% of U.S. natural gas production by 2010 it was over 20%

and the U.S. government's Energy Information Administration predicts that by 2035, 46% of

the United States' natural gas supply will come from shale gas.

Natural gas

Unconventional(different. Found in particular shale)

Found in certain types of shale

2,000-7,000 feet deep

Low permeability (In electromagnetism, permeability is the measure of the ability of a material to support the formation of a magnetic field within itself. Hence, it is the degree of magnetization that a material obtains in response to an applied magnetic field)

Prevalent in the area (widespread in a particular area at a particular time)

2,300 trillion cubic feet in U.S.

WHAT IS SHALE GAS?

Page 4: Introduction shale gas

Shale gas production has led to a new abundance of natural gas supply.

According to energy information administration (EIA),the unproved technically recoverable U.S shale gas resources is estimated at 482(Tcf).

Shale gas production also means increased tax and royalty receipts for state and federal government, and royalty and bonus payments to landowners.

Why is Shale Gas Important

THE PEOPLE’S VIEW

Most critics support the production of natural gas from Marcellus Shale.

Analysts expect shale gas will greatly expand worldwide energy supply.

There is enough shale to support the U.S. gas needs for 90 years.

Landowners in shale gas areas say the energy benefits are outweighed

(heavier, greater)by the environmental risks.
