International Foxtrot FT - Intro - 1 Introduction for International Foxtrot General Foxtrot is a beautiful and difficult Smooth Ballroom Rhythm. There are several types of Foxtrot. Two of these are the Social Foxtrot (also called American Foxtrot and Rhythm Dancing) and the Slow Foxtrot (International Foxtrot). Social Foxtrot closely resembles slow quickstep. This is the type taught most often to beginning students in many major dance studios. On a crowded dance floor, the Social Foxtrot is quite suitable. The character of Slow Foxtrot is long, smooth, gliding steps. The dancer needs much control to give the dance a lazy and unhurried appearance. It is easier to dance these long and gliding steps on a large, uncrowded floor. The smooth rise and fall should happen as a normal result of the movement of the dance. They call this natural movement body flight. Timing The timing for Slow Foxtrot is 4/4 (four beats to each measure or bar) and normally with three steps taken over the four beats of music. The tempo is usually 30 measures per minute. Generally the accent is on beat one and three, with beat one being the stronger. Rhythm The basic rhythm of foxtrot is SLOW, QUICK, QUICK. For definition, a SLOW (S) is equal to two beats of music and a QUICK (Q) is equal to one. Interpretation of the music is largely a matter of personal taste, but a good general hint is to be a little late with the second QUICK. Body Mechanics The use of correct body mechanics makes the Slow Foxtrot much easier to dance. We have listed a few key points. The dancer must keep the body weight well over the supporting leg. If the partners' feet are slightly apart this is easier to accomplish. A good top line (head to rib cage region) is a necessity, with the weight of the head maintained over the feet. Keep the knees relaxed - never locked. Hold the arms up with the muscles of the back of the upper arm (triceps) instead of the front muscles (biceps), while keeping the shoulders down. Movement Foxtrot movement generally involves long, gliding steps. The second step may be shorter due to the rising action and the third longer to give the dance a smooth, flowing appearance. Forward Movement Forward movement begins by lowering into the knee of the supporting foot. To describe this, let's assume that we are standing on the right foot. We swing the free foot (left) forward from the hip, after lowering to the heel on the previous step. The heel of the supporting foot (right) releases as the heel of the free foot (left) is about to strike the floor. There is a push off the right toe before the left heel contacts the floor. As weight transfers onto the new supporting foot (left), the other (right) gathers under the body. Step one generally ends with a slight rise. Most turning movements begin with CBM. Usually step one is a SLOW.

Introduction for International Foxtrot

General Foxtrot is a beautiful and difficult Smooth Ballroom Rhythm. There are several

types of Foxtrot.

Timing The timing for Slow Foxtrot is 4/4 (four beats to each measure or bar) and

normally with three steps taken over the four beats of music. The tempo is usually 30 measures per minute. Generally the accent is on beat one and three, with beat one being the stronger.

Rhythm The basic rhythm of foxtrot is SLOW, QUICK, QUICK. For definition, a SLOW (S)

is equal to two beats of music and a QUICK (Q) is equal to one. Interpretation of the music is largely a matter of personal taste, but a good general hint is to be a little late with the second QUICK.

Body Mechanics The use of correct body mechanics makes the Slow Foxtrot much

easier to dance.

The second step may

be shorter due to the rising action and the third longer to give the dance a smooth, flowing appearance. Forward Movement

Forward movement begins by lowering into the knee of the supporting foot.

Introduction (continued)

FT - Intro - 2

The second and third steps, most often, are on the toe or ball of the foot. Step two generally remains up, lowering at the end of step three. Step three may be taken in Contrary Body Movement Position (CBMP). For example, every step taken outside partner, in banjo, is in CBMP. Occasionally CBM accompanies CBMP. Generally step two and three are QUICKS.

Backward Movement

The knee of the supporting foot (left, for purposes of explanation) bends, lowering into the supporting leg. The free foot (right), leg and hip move back with the toe leading. As the weight transfers to the free foot, the heel of the supporting foot drags back until it collects under the body with no foot rise.

Rise and Fall "Rise" is the increased elevation created by the bracing of the muscles of

the legs, the straightening of the knees and the stretching upwards of the body. The rising of the heel or heels from the floor usually accompanies this action. "Fall" is the lowering of the supporting foot from the toe to heel and the subsequent flexing of the knees while preparing for the next step. Instructions referring to no foot rise (NFR), mean that there is a body rise while the heel of the supporting foot does not leave the floor. No foot rise generally occurs on backing steps, for the lady, when the man has normal rise. The man's forward poise and swing, in all forward movements, (e.g., Feather, Three Step) will result in the lady having a body rise, with no foot rise. The man will have no foot rise on all heel pulls. The lady will have no foot rise during a heel turn until she begins her forward step. The rise and fall in Foxtrot is generally achieved by rising at the end of step one, maintaining the rise on step two and three, and lowering at the end of step three.

Heel Turn The term heel turn is almost a misnomer. The turn happens on the ball or

whole foot of the supporting foot, keeping the moving or closing foot parallel to it. Trying to accomplish a heel turn on the heel of the foot will cause the toes to come off the floor. This will not allow for any body rise or natural forward progression at the end of the turning action. Transfer the weight to the closing foot at the end of the turn. The lady does a heel turn on the second step of natural and reverse turning figures. The Pull Step is a type of heel turn, used by the man, in some backward Natural Turns (e.g., fifth step of the Natural Turn for the man). The feet may be kept apart instead of closed, and the weight is more forward than in a heel turn. The second step of an Impetus Turn is a heel turn for the man that is almost like the lady's heel turn.

Brush A brush occurs when the moving foot (generally for the woman) moves from one

open position to another. The word "Brush" means that the moving foot must first close to the foot supporting the weight of the body, but without the weight changing. During the Brush step it is advisable to keep the knees relaxed and brush with the moving foot's toe about level with the supporting foot's instep. It is not necessary for the toes of both feet to touch when brushing.

Shoulder Leading The Shoulder Lead occurs when the same foot and shoulder move

forward or backward simultaneously, i.e., the right shoulder and the right foot move forward on the same step.

International Foxtrot

Introduction (continued)

FT - Intro - 3

Contra (Contrary) Body Movement Contra (contrary) Body Movement (CBM) is the

action of turning the opposite hip and shoulder toward the direction of the moving leg. If the left leg moves forward the right side of the body would move forward. Most turning movements begin with CBM. When stepping forward using CBM, the leg must move on a straight line. If the foot and leg turn with the body, you will be moving into the space of the partner moving backward. While backing, using CBM, a slight turn of the foot and leg is allowed as you are vacating the partner's space.

Contra (Contrary) Body Movement Position Contra (contrary) Body Movement

Position (CBMP) is the position attained by placing the moving foot in the same track as the supporting foot. Steps taken in Banjo (BJO) position or Sidecar (SDCAR) position should end in CBMP. Sometimes it will be necessary to use CBM to end a step in CBMP. If the previous step does not have a shoulder leading you will have to use CBM. If there was a shoulder leading, the body is in position for a step in CBMP.

Sway Using sway is not only for effect but to improve the balance and the execution of

many figures. Initiate the action of the sway at the ankles and progresses upward through the hips, then through the diaphragm, but not the shoulders. In the slow foxtrot, it is best to keep sway to a minimum. There are three types of Sway: Normal Sway

Normal Sway is the natural (normal) inclination of the body from the ankles, upward AWAY FROM the moving leg. You use this Sway on nearly all figures that curve, wave or turn. The exception is spins, such as, Pivots, Double Reverse Spin, Outside Spin, and Lock Steps.

Hover Sway

The Hover Sway is the natural inclination of the body from the ankles up toward the moving leg. Use this sway to hover to semi-closed position.

Metromome Sway (Broken Sway)

Metronome Sway is a top of the body sway that is from the waist upwards. We use it in the Change of Direction, Hesitation Change, and the Tipsy for example.

Produce a Left Sway with a side step taken on the right foot and the body inclines upward from the ankle (stretch the right side). Left Sway is generally diagonal forward and level as in the Hover Cross for the man and the Feather for the woman. Achieve Right Sway by taking a side step on the left foot and allow the left side to inclined upward from the ankle. Right Sway is generally diagonally back as in the Natural Turn and the Feather for the man. It is important that when stretching one side of the body do not collapse the opposite side.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in banjo backing diagonal to line of dance and the center of the hall. [Step 1.] Step back toward DLC and in banjo with the left foot, toe-heel. Begin a rise through the body with no foot rise. [Step 2.] Step back on the right foot on the toe continuing to rise. Turn right face to right shoulder leading. The feeling is that you are still in banjo. [Step 3.] Step back on the left toe in banjo, toward LOD. Lower to the heel as the right foot collects under the body ready to take the next step.

FT - Fig 6 - 16

LADY Start in banjo moving diagonal to line of dance and the center of the hall. [Step 1.] Step forward in banjo, outside partner, with the right foot, heel-toe. Rise as the weight moves from the heel to the toe. [Step 2.] Step forward on the left toe, turning slightly right face to a left shoulder leading. [Step 3.] Step forward on the right toe in banjo, outside partner. As the left foot collects under the body, preparing for the next step, lower to the heel.

GENERAL NOTES

It is common for the back feather to follow a curved feather and then dance a feather finish. Omitting the curving action on step two is acceptable. In that case, take step three toward DLC.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Dance Position facing diagonal to line of dance and the wall. [Step 1] Step forward on the left foot, Heel-toe. Using CBM start a left face turn. There is no rise on this step. [Step 2] With a right shoulder leading, step forward on the right foot using the inside edge of the toe. The left face turn should continue to end facing DLC. A slight rise on the end of the step will cause the left foot to brush toward the right on the inside edge of the toe.

LADY Start in Closed Dance Position facing diagonal to reverse line of dance and the center of the hall. [Step 1] Step back on the right foot, toe-heel. Using CBM start a left face turn. There is no rise on this step. [Step 2] With a left shoulder leading, step back on the left foot using the inside edge of the toe. The left face turn should continue to end facing DRW. A slight rise on the end of the step will cause the right foot to brush toward the right on the inside edge of the toe.

International Foxtrot

FT - Fig 5 - 14

GENERAL NOTES It is important that both steps of this figure be taken on the same line. Do the turn and brush, that occur on the second step, during the latter part of the step. Up to one-half turn to the left is acceptable. One-quarter turn to the left is the normal amount of turn used in round dancing. The second step may also use two "slows". This would give the figure three "slows".

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in closed position backing DLW. [Step 1.] Step back on the right toe, checking in CBMP. [Step 2.] Lowering slightly and using CBM to start a right face turn, step forward on the left foot, heel-toe. [Step 3.] Continue the left face turn to step side on the right toe, with a right shoulder leading. The step is toward COH and preparing for the next step to be in banjo. [Step 4.] Step back on the left toe in CBMP and banjo. [Step 5.] Using CBM to start a left face turn, step back on the right toe, into closed position. [Step 6.] Continuing the left face turn, step side and forward toward DLW on the left toe. The body does not turn as much as the foot. The left shoulder is leading and you are preparing to step outside partner in banjo. [Step 7.] Step forward on the right toe in CBMP and Banjo, outside partner. Collecting the left leg under the body, lower to the heel to prepare for the next step.

LADY Start in closed position DLW. [Step 1.] Using CBM, if necessary, step forward on the left toe, checking in CBMP. [Step 2.] Using CBM to start a left face turn, step back on the right foot toe-heel. [Step 3.] With a left shoulder leading, step side on the left toe, preparing to step outside partner in banjo. [Step 4.] Step forward on the right toe, in CBMP and banjo, outside partner. [Step 5.] Using CBM to start a left face turn, step forward on the left toe, into closed position. [Step 6.] Continuing the left face turn, start the right leg forward. The turning action will cause the right foot to end side on the toe, toward DLW. [Step 7.] Continue turning left face on the right foot to a right shoulder leading and step back on the left toe in CBMP and banjo. Collecting the right leg under the body, lower to the heel to begin the next step.

GENERAL NOTES

An acceptable entry to this figure is any back step on the left foot. A typical entry is the first three steps of a reverse wave. Following a quick open reverse is also an acceptable entry. The man must not allow himself to get "buried" on the check step. The checking action is up not down. If he checks to low or deep, his momentum will be going backward at the end of the check. He wants to feel that he is going forward at the end of the check as that is the direction of the next step.

LADY Start in Close Position facing DRC. [Step 1.] Step back on the left foot DLW commencing a right face turn, toe heel, no foot rise with body rise only. [Step 2.] Rising to the left toe, close right to left toe turning right face 1/4 with the head well to the right and swaying right. [Step 3.] Pivot left face 3/8 on the ball of the right foot turning the head to the left slipping the left foot forward and lowering to the heel in close position facing RLOD.

GENERAL NOTES

OPTIONAL - You may accelerate the movement between the first and second steps and hold the position briefly, creating a line before dancing the Slip Pivot. The lady closes her feet instead of stepping side.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in closed position facing DLC. [Step 1.] Start left face turn forward on heel to ball of left to face COH using a light left sway. [Step 2.] Continue left face turn side and forward on ball of right foot outside partner turning a little over 1/8 left face allowing body to continue the turn to face nearly RLOD using body and foot rise with extension upward and outward. Although, due to the rise on the right foot, there has also been rise on the left, the left foot should otherwise remain in place. [Step 3.] Start lowering to left foot with 1/8 right face swivel, then continue swivel with ball/flat action to end facing DLW with right heel in contact with floor in strong CBMP, right foot between the lady’s feet.

Checked Reverse Turn and Slip Pivot (continued) International Foxtrot

FT - Fig 37 - 78 S#5 2001

LADY Start in closed position facing DRW. [Step 1.] Press right toe well back preparing for a left face heel turn with no foot or body rise. [Step 2.] Pull left heel toward right foot. As the left foot nearly closes to right foot, pivot left face on the right heel, then change weight to left foot to end facing nearly LOD. Continue turn through the body with slight body rise, extend head upward and to the left. [Step 3.] Start strong rotation right face to start pivoting action forward between man’s feet on ball of right while holding left toe in strong CBMP back slightly to side with some floor contact.

GENERAL NOTES On steps 1 and 2 some left shaping is used by the man while the lady has none. On step 2 some weight is retained on the man’s left and lady’s right foot to allow for the amount of torque to follow. Both continue the left face body turn with strong upward and outward extension. The man needs to draw his right heel back a little on step 3 in order to hold it in CBMP between the lady’s feet for the next figure. There should be a clockwise sweeping action to accompany step 3 with some CBM at the end to prepare for a right face turning figure. Some choreography calls for a timing of SQS on this figure. This is more often used when the ending position is DLW.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Dance Position facing Reverse Line Of Dance. [Step 1.] Using CBM to start a right face heel turn, step back on the left foot, toe-heel. There is no rise or sway on this step. [Step 2.] Pull the right foot, on the heel, to the left while turning right face on the left foot. Completing the turn, change weight to the right foot and rise to the toe. [Step 3.] Remaining in CP, step back and slightly to the side on the left toe, toward DRC. As the right foot collects under the body, lower to the heel of the left to begin the next figure.

LADY Start in Closed Dance Position facing Line Of Dance. [Step 1.] Using CBM to start a right face turn, step forward on the right foot, heel-toe. This is a down step with no rise. [Step 2.] Continuing the right face turn, start the left foot forward. The turn will cause the foot to end side on the toe. When transferring the weight, start to rise. This will cause the right foot to brush to the left as the turn continues. [Step 3.] Step forward and slightly side on the right toe. As the left foot collects under the body, lower to the heel of the right foot to begin the next figure.

GENERAL NOTES

The lady's forward swing on step 2 will helps the man's rotation, allowing an easy completion of the turn. As with most turning figures, slight amount of sway is welcome.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Position DLC. [Step 1.] Using CBM to start a left face turn, step forward on the left foot, heel-toe. [Step 2.] Continuing the left face turn start the right leg forward. The turn will cause the right foot to end side on the toe. [Step 3.] Continue to turn left face and step forward and side, toward DLW, on the left foot, toe-heel. The left shoulder should be leading and the next step should be in Banjo, outside partner.

LADY Start in Closed Position backing DLC. [Step 1.] Using CBM to start a left face turn, step back on the right foot, toe-heel. There will be a slight rise through the body, but not the feet. [Step 2.] Continue to turn right face on the right foot as you pull the left to it on the heel. When the feet are together, change weight to the left foot and rise to the toe ready to step towards LOD. [Step 3.] Continue to turn left face on the left foot and step back and side on the right foot, toe-heel. The leg starts forward, but the turn causes the foot to end back and side toward DLW with a right shoulder leading.

GENERAL NOTES Dancers should avoid the tendency to overturn the body on the third step. The man's body faces the wall while the step is toward DLW. The next step is in Banjo, man outside partner, toward DLW, with the given beginning alignment. The lady must take an aggressive third step or she might feel that she is drug into the next step not moved with the man's body.

[Step 3.] Step forward right with slip pivoting action rotate right face to Closed Position facing diagonal center and reverse line of dance.

GENERAL NOTES

The Contra Check can be used in a number of amalgamations. It may used as an extended picture figure, often at the end of a routine. Also, the third step may be changed which could be a side step, a Slip Pivot (this figure) or a Switch. The Contra Check itself can create a beautiful picture if only partial weight is transferred and if the arms are allowed to breathe so the woman can extend the line as far as she is capable. Take care to avoid rising while in the Contra Check.

LADY Start in Closed Position backing DLW. [Step 1.] Using CBM to start a right face turn, step back on the left foot, toe-heel. [Step 2.] Continue turning right face as step back almost toward the wall on the right toe with right shoulder leading. [Step 3.] Continue turning right face as step back on right toe in contra-banjo, body turns more, to end facing between DLC and LOD.

GENERAL NOTES The lady may use footwork of toe-heel on step two. Her third step should be under her body. It should feel almost as though it is locked in back of her right foot as she turns. The Curved Feather can also be started from Semi-Closed Position (PP) in which case the lady’s steps would be fwd L, fwd & sd R, XLIB.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Position DLW. [Step 1.] Step forward on the left foot using a heel lead. Start a left face turn (CBM). [Step 2.] Turning left face, step forward on the ball of the right foot and rise to the toe at the end of the step. Use a right shoulder lead with a sway to the left. [Step 3.] Step forward on the left toe in CBMP and lower at the end of the step. End in Closed Position DRC.

LADY Start in Closed Position facing DRC. [Step 1.] Step back on the right foot with a toe to heel action. Start a left face turn (CBM). [Step 2.] Turning left face, step back on the left foot, toe to heel action, rising at the end of this step in the body, with no foot rise. Use a left shoulder lead and a sway to the right. [Step 3.] Finishing the left face turn, step back on the right foot with a toe to heel action and lower at the end of this step. End in Closed Position facing DLW.

Curving Three Step (continued) International Foxtrot

FT - Fig - 33 - 70

GENERAL NOTES

The Lady may turn her head to the right on step 3, instead of leaving it to the left throughout the figure. If the Lady does opt to turn her head to the right, she must be careful not to pull her right side away from the man's or move into his space. The last step of the Curving Three Step is almost always a checking step, thus the following figure begins with a step backward, toward DLW. This figure may start facing any direction but usually begins facing DW, LOD or DLC.

LADY

Start in Closed Dance Position facing diagonal center and reverse line of dance moving toward diagonal wall and line of dance. [Step 1.] Step backward with left foot toward diagonal wall and line of dance and commence right face turn.. Rise in the body at end of the step in the body (no foot rise). [Step 2.] Close right foot to left [without weight] and execute a heel turn on the left foot turning right face. Rise to balls of feet at the end of the step. [Step 3.] Continue turning right face and step forward and side on ball of left foot. [Step 4.] Step forward on ball of right foot in Contra Banjo Position facing nearly diagonal wall and reverse line of dance. Lower to heel at end of step.

GENERAL NOTES

Lady should take care not to hop on the third step, and should have her weight well over her foot on the fourth step. The following figure is a forward step for the man (backward for the lady). This figure is essentially the mirror image of the Double Reverse Spin, and while often used in Waltz, it has clear Foxtrot roots due to the lady’s heel turn on step 2. As with the Double Reverse Spin, the amount of turn depends on the choreography, but normally ranges between 3/4 turn and a full turn.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION MAN Start in closed position facing DLC. [Step 1.] Step forward toward DLC on the left heel in CBM, rising to the toe to lead the lady to dance a heel turn. [Step 2.] Swaying slightly to the left, step side, toward DLC on the right toe. [Step 3.] Continuing the left face turn, step side and slightly forward across LOD turning the lady to SCP and lowering to the left heel. [Step 4.] Step forward in CBMP toward LOD on the right heel. Rise to the toe and turn the lady to closed position. [Step 5.] Step forward using CBM toward LOD on the ball of the left foot. [Step 6.] Accelerating the rate of turn, step side LOD on ball of right foot. [Step 7.] Continuing the acceleration, turn the lady to SCP and step side and forward toward DLW on the left toe lowering to the heel.

LADY Start in closed position facing DRW. [Step 1.] Step back on the right toe toward DLC in CBM and lower to the heel. [Step 2.] Continuing the left face turn, draw the left foot to the right, dancing a heel turn. Transferring your weight to the left foot, begin to rise to the toe. [Step 3.] Rising on the left toe and turning the head right in SCP step side and forward toward LOD on the right toe lowering to the heel. [Step 4.] Step forward toward LOD on the left heel in SCP. Rising to the toe, turn left face to CP with the head left. [Step 5.] Turning left face, step back toward LOD on the ball of the right foot. [Step 6.] Close the left foot to the right, dancing a left face toe spin. [Step 7.] Turning the head right step side and forward in SCP toward DLW lowering to the heel.

GENERAL NOTES Timing for the Double Open Telemark may vary, for example: SQQ &QQS, SQQ SQ&Q. Notice that the lady will generally dance a toe spin in place of a heel turn in the second Telemark. The first Telemark should be slightly overturned to ease entry into the second. This can be accomplished by the man dancing slightly toward center on step 3 instead of straight down line and by turning his body a little toward line on step 4. This figure is easier and more exciting to dance if the man delays taking step 4 until the woman has started the step. He can then accelerate to catch up.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Position facing diagonally center and line of dance. If started from feathered position, the starting position would be in Banjo. [Step 1.] Turning slightly left on the right step forward, on the left heel rising to the toe while continuing the left face turn. [Step 2.] Continuing the left face turn, step side diagonally toward DLC, on the right toe continuing the spin without sway. [Step 3.] Continuing the spin on the right toe draw the left toe on the floor closing it to the right without weight. Completing the spin, you end in Closed Position facing diagonally toward the wall and line of dance. When the lady has

Double Reverse Spin (continued) International Foxtrot

FT - Fig 12 - 30

completed her crossing, lower to the heel to begin the next step.

LADY Start in Closed Position facing diagonally toward the wall and reverse line of dance. If starting from feathered position, the starting position would be in Banjo. [Step 1.] Using CBM to start a left face turn, step back right toe to heel DLC. Rise through the body and allow the left foot to start pulling to the right on the heel. [Step 2.] Continue the turn as the left draws back closing to the right. When the turn is complete, change weight to the left, rising to the toe. [Step 3.] Continuing the left face turn, step side on the right toe toward the line of dance. The leg starts forward and the turn causes the foot to end side on the toe. [Step 4.] Continuing the turn by swiveling left face on the right foot. Cross the left foot in front of the right on the toe, lowering to the heel.

GENERAL NOTES

The starting position of the figure will vary as will the amount of turn, depending upon the sequence of figures preceding and following the Double Reverse. The timing also may vary as the lady may spend more time on the heel turn, causing the syncopation to occur on the last two steps. It is important that the lady create and maintain her own rotation consistently throughout the figure.

[Step 3.] Turn left face and step forward toward reverse line of dance into Closed Dance Position. Continue left face rotation to end facing diagonal reverse line of dance and wall. Lower at end the step.

GENERAL NOTES

It is important to maintain an upright position during the Ronde part of this figure. A common entry is Oversway, but nearly any figure leading to Fallaway position can work. Keep hips toward partner during the Ronde. The Ronde feet are usually on or near the floor. The characteristics of this figure are similar to the Rudolph Ronde Slip.

The right shoulder is now leading, and maintain the body rise (still NFR). Sway slightly to the left as the man prepares to step outside you in Banjo. [Step 3.] Maintaining the slight sway, step back on the left foot, toe-heel, in CBMP with the man outside in Banjo. As the right foot collects under the body, lower through the body to begin the first step of the next figure.

GENERAL NOTES

The shoulder leading on step two makes it easier to get into Contra Banjo on step three. You may start the Feather facing any direction. The most common alignments are DLC first then LOD and DLW.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN

Start in closed position facing RLOD. [Step 1.] Turning the body right face, step

back LOD on the left foot, toe to heel, pivoting right face to LOD. [Steps 2 and 3.]

Continuing the right face body turn as step forward LOD on the right foot with a

heel lead rising to the toe. On the & count, step forward toward the wall on the left

toe with a slight right sway. [Step 4.] Swiveling right face on the left toe, step

forward [small step] DRW, outside the lady on the right toe with a left side lead

checking forward movement, then lower to the heel.

LADY

Start in closed position facing LOD. [Step 1.] Turning the body right face, step

forward LOD on the right foot, heel to toe, pivoting right face to RLOD. [Steps 2

and 3.] With syncopated timing step back LOD on the left foot, toe to heel,

continuing the right face turn. Then on the & count step back toward the wall on

the right toe halting the backward progression. [Step 4.] Swiveling right face on

the right toe, place the left toe behind the right with a right side lead, and then lower

to the heel.

GENERAL NOTES

A slight hovering action occurs on step 4 when the forward movement is halted and

the man swivels. This allows him to place his right foot outside the lady.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in CP facing RLOD. [Step 1.] Step back on left foot LOD, toe heel, beginning to pull the right heel back rising. [Step 2.] Pull the right heel past the left foot, turning right face, as the Lady steps past. Then sway slightly left, step side and forward LOD with small step to face DC. NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in closed position facing RLOD. [Step 1.] With a slight left side lead, step back on the right foot, LOD, toe to heel. [Step 2.] Turn left face on the right foot with a rise through the body as the lady turns past the man. As the lady passes, step to the side and back on the left foot, ball/flat, DLW, lowering. [Step 3.) Continue the left face body turn on the left foot to lead the lady to step back on her left. Turn the head to the right while shaping to the right.

LADY Start in closed position facing LOD. [Step 1.] Step forward on the left foot, LOD, heel to the toe with foot rise only. [Step 2.] Turn left face on the left foot and turn the head to the right. Step to the side and forward, past the man, DLW then lower to the heel. [Step 3.] Continue the left face turn on the right foot. Shaping to the left with the head well left, place the left toe back DLW and then lower to the left heel, pointing the right toe forward.

Hinge (continued) International Foxtrot

FT – Fig 48 - 100 S#6 2002

GENERAL NOTES By using the body rise during count two the man leads the lady to continue the body movement past the right foot and back onto left. This is opposed to continuing the body rotation on the right, as in a throwaway oversway. The hinge can be danced from various facing positions and from semi-closed position. When dancing the figure from semi-closed position, the man, after stepping forward with the right foot, would attempt to turn the lady as square to him as possible before completing the hinge.

preparation for the next step. [Step 3.] Step forward and side on left toe in BJO ready to move diagonal reverse line of dance and center of the hall. Lower at the end of the step.

GENERAL NOTES

This figure follows with the man’s backward step (lady’s forward) in CBMP. It may commence facing any direction, but is most often used with the alignments shown. The amount of turn may be up to 5/8, in which the next step would move diagonal reverse line of dance and wall. Man may also brush on step 2.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Begin in Closed Position facing DLW. [Step 1.] Step forward on the left foot with a heel lead. [Step 2.] Step forward and slightly to the side on the right foot, beginning a hovering action. Gradually rise until the left foot brushes to right while turning right face about 1/8. [Step 3.] Turn the lady to SCP and step to the side and forward on the left foot toward LOD.

LADY Begin in Closed Position body facing DRC. [Step 1.] Step back on the right foot, toe to heel. [Step 2.] Step back and to the side on the left foot. Gradually rise until the left foot brushes to right while turning right face about 1/8. [Step 3.] Turn into SCP and step to the side and forward on the right foot toward LOD.

Hover Telemark (continued) International Foxtrot

FT - Fig 21 - 46

GENERAL NOTES

The Hover Telemark can turn to the right or to the left at the discretion of the choreographer. It is normally used in ballroom dancing to change line of dance. As described it ends in Semi-Closed or Promenade Position. The man can lead the lady into Closed Position and end the figure preparing to step outside the partner in Banjo. The rise should be very gradual between step 1 and 2, reaching the greatest height when the foot has brushed. Using less elevation, the brush may be eliminated. This is a variation that is not very popular as it has little “show” or “flash” to it. The figure may be started facing any direction.

FT - Fig 22 - 48

LADY Start in Contra Banjo facing DRW. [Step 1.] Step back on the right foot, with a toe to heel action, blending into Closed Position. Start a left face turn. Rise in the body at the end of the step (no foot rise). [Step 2.] Step back toward DLC on the left foot, with a left shoulder lead, preparing to step to Sidecar Position. [Step 3.] Step back toward DLC on the right foot in Sidecar Position with a left shoulder lead and right sway. Continue the left face turn. [Step 4.] Step to the side on the left foot, toward DLW. Blend into Closed Position and prepare to step into Banjo on the next step. [Step 5.] Step forward on the right toe, toward LOD in Banjo (CBMP), with a left shoulder lead and right sway. Lower into the heel at the end of the step.

GENERAL NOTES

The Left Feather is part of a larger figure called the Four Feathers, which includes the Feather, the Left Feather, the Back Left Feather and the Feather Finish. The Man should keep his head to the left on steps 2 and 3, rather than turning it toward LOD while in the Sidecar Position.

MAN

Start in Semi-Closed Dance Position facing reverse line of dance and moving toward diagonal wall and reverse line of dance. [Step 1.] Step forward right toward diagonal wall and reverse line of dance with heel lead. Rise to toe at end of step while folding lady to Closed Position. [Step 2.] Step forward left toward diagonal wall and reverse line of dance on toe and pivot slightly left face to face wall in Closed Position.

Rise to toe at end of step and turn left face to closed position. [Step 2.] Step back right on toe and pivot slightly left face to Closed Position facing center.

GENERAL NOTES

The Lilt Pivot uses a quick rise to the toe, and a Reverse Pivot followed by lowering. In combination, the rise and lowering creates the lilt action used in the name of the figure. It is often used after an Outside Swivel (S). The pivot can turn more or less depending on the

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION MAN Start in Closed Position facing diagonal line of dance and center of hall. [Step 1.] Turning the body left face (CBM), step forward on the left foot with a heel lead, rising quickly to the toe. [Step 2.] Continue to turn left as step to the side toward diagonal line of dance and center of the hall on the ball of the right foot with a slight left sway. [Step 3.] Continue turning and step to the side and back on ball of left foot (partial weight), body facing the diagonal reverse line of dance and wall, correct the sway while turning the lady to Sidecar Position. [Step 4.] Lower into the foot starting a left face spin, as lead lady to step forward. [Step 5.] Continue the spin in Closed Position on the left foot to face nearly DRC. [Step 6.] Step to the side on the ball of the right foot toward DLC in Closed Position, then rise with slight hover action. [Step 7.] Touch left foot to right in closed position facing diagonal reverse line of dance and center of hall. Lower at the end of the step.

LADY Start in Closed Position facing diagonal reverse line of dance and wall. [Step 1.] Turning the body left face (CBM), step back on the right foot toward diagonal line of dance and center of the hall, toe to heel. [Step 2.] Continue the turn as close the left foot to right (no weight), heel turn on the right foot and then transfer weight to left foot rising to the toe at the end of the step. [Step 3.] Step side and forward toward LOD on the right toe in Sidecar Position, with a strong right side lead. [Step 4.] Turning left face (CBM), step forward on the left foot, heel to toe. [Step 5.] Continue turning left face on toe of right foot to face nearly DLW. [Step 6.] Small side step on left toe. [Step 7.] Touch right foot to left in Closed Position facing diagonal line of dance and wall. Lower at the end of the step.

GENERAL NOTES This figure may also be danced with the timing SQQ &SQQ. It is very similar to the Telespin figure with less turn and a touch at the end, thus making it easier to execute.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Position DLW. [Step 1.] Using CBM to start a right face turn, step forward on the right foot, heel-toe. [Step 2.] Continuing the right face turn, start forward with the left leg. The turning action will cause the foot to end side on the toe. [Step 3.] Continuing to turn right face to end facing DLC, step side on the right toe. The right shoulder is leading. [Step 4.] Swaying to the left to clear space, step forward, a small step in CBMP and sidecar, on the left toe. This step is outside partner on the left side. It is a checking step, however; the checking action is up on the toe. Do not allow the heel to come down. [Step 5.] Recover back onto the right foot, on the toe. Start turning slightly to the left. [Step 6.] Step side on the left toe, with a left shoulder leading. [Step 7.] Step forward on the right toe, in CBMP and banjo, outside partner. Collecting the right leg under the body, lower to the heel to begin the next step.

LADY Start in Closed Position backing DLW. [Step 1.] Using CBM to start a right face turn, step back on the left foot, toe-heel. [Step 2.] Continuing the right face turn on the left foot, pull the right foot to the left on the heel. As the feet close together to complete the turn to face LOD, change weight to the right foot and rise to the toe. [Step 3.] Continuing the right face turn, start the left leg forward. The turning action will cause the foot to end side on the toe, toward DLW. [Step 4.] Continuing the right face turn, check back on the toe of the right foot, in CBMP and sidecar. Sway to the right and do not drop to the heel. [Step 5.] Recover forward on the left toe with a slight turn to the left. [Step 6.] Step side on the right toe with a right shoulder leading. [Step 7.] Step back on the left toe in CBMP and banjo. Collecting the right leg under the body, lower to the heel to begin the next step.

GENERAL NOTES

Step two for this figure is different from step two of a natural turn. The Natural Turn progresses along the line of dance while the Natural Hover Cross is rotating. The man must go "through" the lady on step two and the lady must go "through" the man on step three. Step four is a small step on the toe. Making a large step and lowering the weight to the heel on step four, put the dancers out of dance position. Starting this figure from Promenade Position (SCP) or outside partner (BJO) is an acceptable entry. If started from Promenade Position, there is no heel turn for the lady on step two. Her feet pass and step two is between the man's feet.

FT - Fig 27 - 58

GENERAL NOTES

The Natural Fallaway may be followed by the last four steps of a Natural Weave, and this combination is sometimes called a Natural Fallaway Weave. The Natural Fallaway is also often followed by a Slip Pivot. The amount of turn can vary from the standard amount shown above. The ending position may face DLW or the wall.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Dance Position facing and moving diagonal to line of dance and the wall. [Step 1.] Using CBM to start a right face turn, step forward with the right foot heel-toe. Rise as the weight moves from the heel to the toe. The early rise should cause the lady to bring her feet together. [Step 2.] Continuing the body turn to the right, step side on the left foot on the toe. The foot starts forward and the turn causes it to end as a side step. There is no further rise. [Step 3.] Continue the right face turn to face RLOD then step back on the right foot, toe-heel. A slight amount of sway to the right will aid the turn. You lower onto the heel as the left foot collects under the body to start the next step. As you lower any sway will dissolve. [Step 4.] Step back on the left foot, toe-heel. Start turning right face with the use of CBM. There will be no rise on this step. [Step 5.] Continue to turn right face on the left heel to take a side step on the right foot towards DLW. The right foot will pull passed the left foot then move back and side. The turn will cause the step to be a side step. Take weight on the whole foot and rise slightly with a slight sway to the left. The left foot will draw to the right foot on the rise and the sway will dissolve.

LADY Start in Closed Dance Position facing diagonal to reverse line of dance and the center of the hall. Movement will begin diagonal to line of dance and the wall. [Step 1.] Using CBM to begin a right face turn, step back on the left foot, toe-heel. As you lower the foot from the toe to the heel you should feel the man start to rise. Start pulling the right foot to the left foot and rise through the body with no foot rise. [Step 2.] Continue the right face turn on the left foot as the right foot closes to it. Change weight to the right foot and continue the rise to the toe of the right. [Step 3.] Continue the right face turn to LOD and step forward on the left foot, toe-heel. You lower to the heel as the right foot collects under the body to start the next step. [Step 4.] Step forward with the right foot, heel-toe. Using CBM start a right face turn. There is no rise on this step. [Step 5.] Continuing the right face turn step side on the left foot, toe-heel. The foot starts forward and the turn causes it to end side. The step is down with a slight rise after taking full weight, with NFR. The rise will cause the right to draw to the left on the inside edge.

GENERAL NOTES

Step four for the man is a pull step turning on the weighted heel. When pulling the right foot back, it will pass directly under the body. Using a full Natural Turn, in most round dance routines, is not as common as using the first three steps of the figure. We usually cue these three steps as a half natural turn or 3 of a Natural Turn.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in closed position facing LOD. [Step 1.] Begin by stepping forward on right foot with heel lead and start a right face turn. [Step 2.] Step to the side on the left toe, toward DLW, with right sway and continue the turn. [Step 3.] Step back, a small step, toward DLW on the right toe crossing well behind the left foot. [Step 4.] Twist right face on the toe of right foot and whole of the left foot into closed position, DLC, with the feet apart. End with the weight on the right foot. [Step 5.] Rise to the toes with right sway. The weight is still on the right foot.

LADY Start in closed position facing RLOD. [Step 1.] Begin by stepping back on the left foot with a toe to heel action and start a right face turn. [Step 2.] Close the right foot to the left and continue the right face heel turn with left sway. [Step 3.] Take a small step forward on the left foot, toward LOD, preparing to step into BJO with a left shoulder lead and left sway. [Step 4.] Step forward on the right foot, toward DLW, in BJO and in CBMP with a left shoulder lead. Continue the right face turn. [Step 5.] Step to the side on the left toe, toward DLW, in closed position facing DRW. Rise to the toes with right sway. Brush the right foot to left at the end of step.

GENERAL NOTES Notice there is no rise for the first four steps of this figure. The fifth step could be used as the first step of the Hover Feather (see Feather). Note also that the crossing action used by the man on step 3 allows the woman to move around the man on his right with her forward steps (steps 3 and 4). Do not allow the rise at the end of step 5 to be too abrupt.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Position DLW. [Step 1.] Using CBM to start a right face turn, step forward on the right foot, heel-toe. [Step 2.] Continuing the right face turn, start the left leg forward. The turning action will cause the foot to end with a side step toward DLW, on the toe. [Step 3.] Continue the right face turn to step back on the right toe, with a right shoulder leading. The step is toward DLC and preparing for the next step to be in banjo.

LADY Start in Closed Position, backing DLW. [Step 1.] Using CBM to start a right face turn, step back on the left foot, toe-heel. [Step 2.] Continuing the right face turn on the left foot, pull the right foot to the left, on the heel. After the feet have close and the turn to a left shoulder leading is complete, change weight to the right foot and rise to the toe. [Step 3.] With a left shoulder leading, step forward on the left toe, preparing to step outside partner in banjo.

If step one is from SCP, the lady will not do the heel turn. Her feet will pass and her second step will end side and forward. A slight increase in elevation on step six will slow the momentum to allow the dancers to collect on step seven.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Semi-Closed Position moving diagonal to line of dance and the wall. [Step 1.] In SCP step forward with the right foot, in CBMP, heel-toe, starting a slight turn to the right. This step will be slightly across the lady, but should not hinder her movement. Rise as the weight moves from heel to the toe. [Step 2.] Continue the right face turn and step side across the lady's path. The left leg must begin forward and allow the turning to cause the foot to end to the side. The forward movement is necessary so the lady will have space to

LADY Start in Semi-Closed Position moving diagonal to line of dance and the wall. [Step 1.] In SCP step forward with the left foot, in CBMP, heel-toe, starting a slight turn to the right. Begin to rise as weight moves from the heel to the toe. [Step 2.] Turning right face step forward on the right toe, into closed position with the man. [Step 3.] Continue turning right face to a left shoulder leading and step forward on the left toe. This is preparation for the next step to be in Banjo, outside partner. As the right leg collects under the body, lower to the heel for the next step.

GENERAL NOTES

The chart shows this figure moving DLW. It is very important for the lady's third step to be long enough to stay on the man's right side. The man must allow the lady to remain on his right side.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Dance Position facing DLC. [Step 1.] Using CBM step forward on the left foot, beginning a left face turn, heel-toe. As weight moves onto the toe, rise to bring the lady's feet together for her heel turn. [Step 2.] Continuing to turn left face, swing the right leg forward, the turn will cause the foot to end side, on the toe. A slight sway to the left will aid the turn. [Step 3.] Continue the left face turn to step side and slightly forward on the left toe, toward DLW in SCP. This is a small step. Lower to the heel at the end of the step as the right leg collects under the body moving into the next figure.

Open Telemark (continued) International Foxtrot

FT - Fig 9 - 22 S#6 2002

LADY Start in Closed Dance Position facing DRW. [Step 1.] Using CBM to start a left face turn, step back on the right foot, toe-heel. As the man begins to rise, pull the heel of the left foot toward the right. Start to rise through the body with no foot rise. [Step 2.] Turning left face on the right heel (heel turn), when facing LOD change weight to the left foot and rise to the toe. [Step 3.] Continue turning left face and step side and forward on the right toe toward DLW in SCP. This is a small step and you must keep your right side toward your partner. Lower to the heel at the end of the step as the right leg collects under the body moving into the next figure.

GENERAL NOTES The figure, as described, is started from CP and ends in SCP. The lady must try to maintain Closed Position until the man takes her out to semi-closed on the last step. The man should introduce a slight dwell and Hover action on step 2 before taking step 3. The couple should maintain a tight "V" between the bodies as the third step is taken to Promenade Position (SCP). The last step is not a long step; it is almost under the body. A long step would tend to cause the couple to lunge and fall forward. The Telemark is frequently danced from a Feather Position, in which case the Feather should be danced toward DLC.

The man can under turn or over turn the figure if the choreography calls for it.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Position facing RLOD. [Step 1.] Step back on the left foot on the toe and lower at the end of this step. Sway to the left. [Step 2.] Step back on the right toe starting a left face turn using CBM. As body moves back, transfer the weight to heel and then rise to the toe. [Step 3.] Step to the side on the left toe.

LADY Start in Closed Position facing LOD. [Step 1.] Step forward on the right toe, lowering at the end of the step and using right sway. [Step 2.] Step forward on the left foot with a lead using CBM. Rise at the end of the step and begin a left face turn. [Step 3.] Step to the side on the right toe.

GENERAL NOTES

The overall amount of the turn may vary depending on the next figure. By using essentially steps 3, 4, and 5 of a Reverse Turn, the Outside Change may also be used to prepare a step to Banjo.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in contra banjo position facing line of dance. [Step 1] Turning the body right face, step back on the left foot. Close the left toe near to the right heel, leading the lady forward, outside the man in banjo. [Step 2] With a strong right face body turn, step forward, RLOD, outside the lady, on the right heel, rising to the toe. Most of the turn is on the toe. [Step 3] Continuing the right face turn on the right toe, step side and back on the left toe. Lower to the heel in closed position, continuing the turn, like a slip pivot.

LADY Start in contra banjo position facing RLOD. [Step 1] Turning right face, step forward, RLOD, on the right heel, rising to the toe. [Step 2] Continuing the right face turn, close the left foot to the right, pivoting on the toes of both feet. [Step 3] Completing the right face pivot, step forward, between the man's feet, on the right toe. Lower to the heel in closed position, continuing the turn, like a slip pivot.

GENERAL NOTES The Outside Spin may be danced from various facing directions and with various amounts of turn. The figure is often danced following an open natural turn with the man backing diagonally wall and line of dance.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start on the right foot and in Contra Banjo. [Step 1.] Step back on the left foot, in CBMP with no rise, toe-heel. Keeping the right foot forward and make a strong right face turn with the body, maintaining pressure on the right toe to help balance. The body turn will cause the lady to swivel right face into Semi-Closed Position ready to move DLC.

LADY Start on the left foot and in Contra Banjo. [Step 1.] Step forward on the right foot, heel-toe, and swivel 3/4 right face on the ball of the foot. When the turn is complete, settle back onto the heel of the right foot. For better balance, keep the inside edge of the left toe in contact with the floor. The right face swivel will take you to Semi-Closed Position ready to move DLC.

GENERAL NOTES

The Outside Swivel may start from an Open Natural with the lady ready to step into Banjo, outside partner. It may also start from a Checked Feathered Position, with the man outside partner. If the figure starts from a Checked Feathered Position the feet are already in CBMP. Just maintain the relative foot position for the Outside Swivel. Starting the figure from a position where the lady is stepping into Banjo, e.g., after the Open Natural Turn, turning the figure to the left is acceptable. Turning the figure either way, the man must keep his right side out of the lady's way as she swivels. Also, the lady should not move her left foot through until the next step.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Semi-Closed Position moving DLC. [Step 1.] Step forward on the right foot, heel-toe, in semi-closed position and CBMP. [Step 2.] Using CBM to start a left face turn, step forward on the left toe. [Step 3.] Continue the left face turn to step side and slightly back on the right toe, with a right shoulder leading. The step is toward LOD and preparing for the next step to be in Banjo.

LADY Start in Semi-Closed Position moving DLC. [Step 1.] Step forward on the left foot, heel-toe, in Semi-Closed Position and CBMP. [Step 2.] Start a left face turn into Closed Position and step side and back on the right toe. The leg starts forward and the turn causes the foot to end side and back. [Step 3.] Continue the left face turn to step side and forward on the left toe, with a left shoulder leading, preparing to step outside partner in Banjo. [Step 4.] Step forward on the right toe, in CBMP and Banjo, outside partner. [Step 5] Using CBM to start a left face turn, step forward on the left toe, into Closed Position.

The man must not turn the lady into Closed Position on step one. Step two for the lady should move in the same direction as step one. The man's second step must be shorter than the lady's. He can encourage her to take an aggressive second step with his body and shorten his own to remain on the inside of her turn. What he must not do is cross his left over his right on step two. This will take the lady out of dance position.

This figure follows with the man’s backward step (lady’s forward) in CBMP. It may commence facing any direction, but is most often used with the alignments shown. The amount of turn may be up to 5/8, in which the next step would move diagonal reverse line of dance and wall. Maintain a good SCP (promenade) on steps 2 and 3. The lady may keep her head to the left on steps 2 and 3, to keep the position more compact if she wishes. The man must leave his left foot forward in CBMP during the pivot for the proper entry into the next figure. The timing for the Reverse Fallaway and Slip can be SQQQ, SQQS, SQQ&, S&QQ or SQ&Q. The SQ&Q timing is most often used in Round Dancing.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in closed position facing DLC. [Step 1.] Begin by stepping forward with a heel lead toward DLC and starting a left face turn (CBM). Rise at the end of the step. [Step 2.] Step back and side, toward LOD, on the right toe into fallaway position with a right shoulder lead. [Step 3.] Step back on the left toe toward DLC in CBMP (SCP-RLOD). Lower at the end of the step.

LADY Start in closed position facing DRW. [Step 1.] Begin by stepping back on the right foot with a toe to heel action and start a left face body turn (CBM). Rise at the end of the step with no foot rise. [Step 2] Step back and side on the left toe into fallaway with a left shoulder lead. [Step 3.] Step back on the right toe toward DLC in CBMP (SCP-RLOD). Lower at the end of the step.

FT - Fig 8 - 20

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Closed Dance Position or a Feathered Position (BJO). [Step 1.] Using CBM step forward on the left foot, beginning a left turn, heel-toe. As weight moves onto the toe, rise to bring the lady's feet together for her heel turn. [Step 2.] Continuing to turn to the left, swing the right leg forward. The turn will cause the foot to end side, on the toe. A slight sway to the left will aid the turn. [Step 3.] Continue the left face turn to step bk, LOD, on the left foot, toe-heel. Lower to the heel as the right leg begins to collect under the body. The sway dissolves as you lower. [Step 4.] Using CBM to continue the left face turn, step back down LOD on the right foot, toe-heel-toe. The turning action to the left will continue on the right foot as the left foot collects under the body. This is when a rise to the toe will occur. [Step 5.] Point the left foot to DLW and take weight on the toe. The body turns less, only to the wall. [Step 6.] Step forward outside partner, in banjo, on the toe. The body stays facing the wall even though the figure is moving DLW. Collecting the right foot under the body, lower to the heel to begin the next figure.

LADY

Start in Closed Dance Position or a Feathered Position (BJO). [Step 1.] Using CBM to start a left face turn, step back on the right foot toe-heel. As the man begins to rise, pull the left foot toward the right foot on the heel. Start to rise through the body with no foot rise. [Step 2.] Close the left foot to the right foot while continuing to turn left face on the right foot. When facing LOD, change weight to the left foot and rise to the toe. [Step 3.] Step forward on the right foot, toe-heel, LOD. Lower to the heel as the left leg collects under the body to begin the next step. [Step 4.] Using CBM to continue the left face turn, step forward on the left foot, heel-toe. Rise as weight moves onto the toe. [Step 5.] Continuing the left face turn, start the right foot forward. The turning will cause the foot to end side, up on the toe. [Step 6.] Continue the left face turn and step back, DLW, in CBMP and BJO on the toe. As the right leg collects under the body, lower to the heel to begin the next figure. The body turns less than the feet on this step.

GENERAL NOTES

Given the alignment in the above chart, the first two steps, for the man, move DLC. The second two steps move LOD. The last two steps move DLW. Steps 4 - 6 - Feather Finish A Feather Finish is often danced as a separate figure, without step 1, 2 and 3. Sway always helps a turn, however; the Foxtrot is a moving dance and too much sway hinders movement. If a Top Spin is to follow the Reverse Turn or Feather Finish then there will be no lowering action on step 6.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in banjo position facing LOD. [Step 1.] Step forward on the left foot, using a heel lead, starting to turn left face (CBM). [Step 2.] Continuing the left face turn, step to the side on the right toe. Use sway to the left. [Step 3.] Step back on the left toe, lowering to heel at the end of step. [Step 4.] Step back on the right foot, toe/heel, starting a slight left face turn to face RLOD. [Step 5.] Step back on the left toe, using right sway. [Step 6.] Step back on the right foot, toe/heel and continue the right sway. Begin to lower at the end of the step.

LADY Start in banjo position facing RLOD. [Step 1.] Step back on the right foot beginning a left face turn (CBM). [Step 2.] Pull the left heel to the right heel and turn left face on the right foot (heel turn). When the turn is completed, change weight to the left foot and rise to the toe. Use sway to the right. [Step 3.] Step forward on the right foot, toe/heel, maintaining the right sway. Begin to lower on the end of the step. [Step 4.] Step forward on the left foot with heel lead and turn left face (CBM). [Step 5.] Step forward on the right foot with heel lead and rise to the toe at the end of the step. Use sway to the left. [Step 6.] Step forward on the left toe and lower to the heel at the end of step.

GENERAL NOTES This figure consists of the first three steps of a reverse turn, and a backing three step in which the steps for the man and lady are approximately the opposite of a normal three step. The man should be careful not to let his weight or poise fall back during the backing part of the figure. The normal amount of turn for the figure is 1/2, as shown above, however, a 5/8 turn is also used.

rotation to end facing diagonal reverse line of dance and wall. Lower at end the step.

GENERAL NOTES

The Rudolph Ronde requires good balance to execute. It is critical that the man soften his right knee during the first step and maintain an upright position. An entry from a pivoting action makes this action even more critical because of the power that can be generated in the pivot. Keep hips toward partner. The lady’s Ronde foot may be on or near the floor, or the foot may be well off of the ground. The characteristics of this figure are similar to the Fallaway Ronde Slip.

LADY

Start in Closed Dance Position facing diagonal center and reverse line of dance moving toward diagonal wall and line of dance. [Step 1.] With right side leading, step backward with right foot toward diagonal wall and line of dance. [Step 2.] Cross left in front of right on balls of feet well into knees, and commence sway to the left while turning right face to face diagonal center and line of dance. [Step 3.] Continue turning right face and step forward right. Commence pivot right face. [Step 4.] Step back left completing pivot to face diagonal center and reverse line of dance. Lower to heel at end of step.

GENERAL NOTES

This figure as presented is a Rumba Cross and Pivot. The Rumba Cross portion may be used separately with a small step side in place of the pivoting action. Timing in that case would be QQS. Facing directions commonly used begin as shown (diagonal wall and line of dance) or diagonal center and line of dance, although other alignments are possible. This figure is more easily executed and better expresses the flavor of Foxtrot if it progresses along the line of direction for each step. The crossing action should be loose and near the knees rather than near the ankles.

[Step 4.] Facing almost LOD step forward on the toe of the left foot lowering to the heel preparing to step forward outside the man in BJO.

GENERAL NOTES Accelerating the body rotation on steps 2 and 3 gives the figure a sharp and flowing feeling and allowing ample time to step back on the right foot collecting the weight as the man lowers to the heel.

to right. [Step 2.] Stretch right side and turn head to left. [Step 3.] Rotate hips and upper body slightly to the right. Stretch left side and change head to right.

GENERAL NOTES The same foot lunge is danced in a somewhat unusual position. The man dances in closed position while the lady is in SCP with the outside of her left thigh against the inside of the man’s right thigh. This position in generally achieved by a preparation figure or step in which the lady stepped to side on her left foot, whereas the man did not take a normal right foot step but “blocks” the lady’s left leg with his right by extending it slightly forward. Facing directions and timings vary.

GENERAL NOTES

The Feather Finish (steps 10, 11, and 12) is a common ending to Three Fallaways, it may end in many other ways. The figure may be danced with a “lilt” entry using the timing for the first fallaway as S&Q, Man dancing - Fwd L rising, -/sd R DLC, XLIB and Lady dancing - Bk R rising,-/sd L DLC, XRIB. Although atypical, SQQ timing could be used to dance the Three Fallaways, without the Feather End, a fourth measure would be required to dance the Feather End.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN Start in Banjo Position outside partner (feathered). [Step 1.] Step forward on the left foot, heel, with no rise. Using CBM, start a slight body turn to the left. [Step 2.] Step forward on the right foot, heel-toe. Begin the rise as weight moves to the toe. The body turn began on step one continues so that there will be a slight right shoulder leading. Use very slight sway to the left. [Step 3.] Finishing the body turn to the left, step forward on the left toe. As the right leg collects under the body, lower to the heel to begin the first step of the next figure. Dissolve any sway, developed on step two, as the lowering action occurs.

Use a very slight sway to the right. [Step 3.] Finishing the body turn to the left, step back on the right foot toe-heel. As the left leg collects under the body, you lower to begin the next step. Dissolve any sway, developed on step two, as the lowering action occurs.

GENERAL NOTES

This figure may begin facing any direction. A feather or feather ending usually precedes a Three Step and normally toward DLW. LOD and DLC are also common alignments. Even though the body turns to the left over the three steps, the direction of movement does not change. Changing the direction of movement so that it turns to the left, when danced on a tight curve, is acceptable.

during this figure. Keep the hip of the extended leg well toward the partner. Maintain upright body poise with weight over the standing leg. May be performed facing any direction. May also enter from Closed Position facing reverse line of dance in which step 1 toward line of dance comes from rotation in the previous step. The figure may also overlap with other figures, for example step 1 may also be step 3 of the open Telemark. A wide range of timings are also possible.

[Step 4.] Forward right on toe in CBMP and lower at end of step. GENERAL NOTES

The Top Spin is an action (not a figure) and occurs on the & count, the preceding and following steps as described here are strictly for the purpose of establishing a “figure flow” to assist in understanding the action.

Depending upon the figure that precedes the Top Spin action and the desired exit alignment, the amount of turn in the Top Spin can range between one quarter and three quarters left face when included within a combination of steps as described. This combination of steps may also be danced using QQQQ timing.

Step forward toward line of dance in Semi-Closed Position. Lower at end the step.

GENERAL NOTES

The Traveling Contra Check can be danced from any facing direction, but usually utilizes the alignment shown. Care should be taken to keep the hips forward on step 2 with a feel of the feet coming under the body before gently rising. Avoid an abrupt rising action. The sways are subtle and should not be exaggerated.

NARRATIVE DESCRIPTION

MAN

Start in Closed Position DLW. [Step 1.] Using CBM to start a right face turn, step forward on the right foot, heel-toe. [Step 2.] Continuing the right face turn, step side on left foot toward diagonal line of dance and wall. [Step 3.] Continuing to turn right face to end facing diagonal line of dance and center of the hall, step side on the right toe. [Step 4.] Step forward in CBMP and Sidecar on the left toe. [Step 5.] Forward toward line of dance on right toe and blend to Closed Position. [Step 6.] Step forward and side on the left toe toward diagonal line of dance and center of the hall, with left shoulder leading. [Step 7.] Step forward on the right toe, in CBMP and Banjo. Lower to the heel.

[Step 3.] Continuing the right face turn, step side on the left toe toward diagonal line of dance and wall. [Step 4.] Step back on the toe of the right foot, in CBMP and Sidecar. [Step 5.] Step back toward line of dance on left toe and blend to closed position. [Step 6.] Step back and side on the right toe toward diagonal line of dance and center of the hall with right shoulder leading. [Step 7.] Step back on the left toe in CBMP and Banjo. Lower to the heel.

GENERAL NOTES

This figure is a variation of the Natural Hover Cross, having different footwork in the second measure. During the second measure, man dances on the toes, while the woman dances backwards with toe-heel action and rise in the body with no foot rise. Starting this figure from Promenade Position (SCP) or outside partner (BJO) is an acceptable entry. If started from Promenade Position (SCP), there is no heel turn for the lady on step two. Her feet pass and step two is forward between the man's feet.

GENERAL NOTES

The Whiplash involves one step and a pointing action. The figure that follows moves backward usually in Banjo, but the woman may also swivel right face to Semi-Closed Position and step back in Fallaway Position. A very attractive and useful alternative sway may be used when dancing this figure in which

GENERAL NOTES

The man may assist development of the figure by leading the lady forward as she circles around the man. Lady may keep her head to the left or right, but a left head may lead to a more compact figure. A Progressive Wing is similar, but includes a forward step on 2 and a cross in back on 3 for the man. This figure may be preceded by an Open Telemark or Open Impetus (or other figure ending in Semi-Closed Position), and is usually followed by a reverse turning figure (e.g. Reverse Turn, Closed Telemark).

[Step 5.] Step forward, toward DLW, on the right toe in banjo (CBMP), using right sway and lowering into the heel at the end of the step.

LADY Start in SCP moving along the LOD. [Step 1.] Step forward, along LOD on the left foot with heel lead in CBMP. [Step 2.] Step to the side and forward on the right toe with a right shoulder lead, preparing to step to SCAR. [Step 3.] Step forward on the left toe in SCAR (CBMP). [Step 4.] Step to the side on the right toe, toward LOD, with left sway and right shoulder lead, preparing to step into banjo. [Step 5.] Step back on the left toe with a body rise (no foot rise) in BJO (CBMP). Use left sway. Lower the body at the end of the step.

GENERAL NOTES

The figure name is sometimes shortened to Zig Zag or Promenade Zig Zag. Also in common usage is a Reverse Zig Zag in which the figure begins with a left face turn followed by the Zig Zag action. This usually places the man outside the circle. There are also many variations to both forms of the Zig Zag.
