In 2016, The Dayton Art Institute presents an innovative suite of special exhibitions, all organized by the museum and featuring contemporary art themed around the classical elements—fire, air, earth, water and ether.

The Year of the Classical Elements begins with Into the Ether: Contemporary Light Artists, on view April 2 – June 26. The exhibition highlights fire, air and ether through an investigation of light, a primary aesthetic principle in art.

Grounded in the Light and Space movement of the 1960s in California, Into the Ether features a group of internationally acclaimed artists—including James Turrell, Robert Irwin, Leo Villareal, Erwin Redl, Daniel

Rozin, and Diane Willow—who examine atmospheric changes, human perception, and individual experiences. These installations showcase experiments with immersive environments and atmospheric qualities, creating unique visitor experiences that will ignite the imagination and encourage participation.

For more about the exhibition, including videos and artist profiles, visit daytonartinstitute.org/ether.
