Welcome to Worship at Federated!

If you are new to Federated, please tell us on a “Visitors Card” & in a red Friendship Folder.

Children are welcome in worship at Federated. Children’s Activity Bags are at the Sanctuary entrance. The Library/“Cry Room” is child friendly. Child care is available Sundays in the Nursery.

Ushers are here to help you — please ask them if you need hearing assistance devices and large print hymnals — ushering this week are Rick Porter (Thurs.),

Roland & Doris Augspurger and Larry & Sue Mares.

We are called Federated because on July 2, 1914, Columbus’ Congregational (now the United Church of Christ) and Presbyterian churches joined to serve as one congregation.

Prayer requests can be shared on Prayers Cards in the pew pockets or Prayer Chain requests to the Church Office (402) 564-2812 to call the Order of St. Andrew. The Prayer Chain is strictly confidential.

If you missed worship last week, visit www.federatedcolumbus.org for videos of worship and bulletins, and on TV at Noon on Spectrum Channel 1304 (HD) Mondays & Saturdays and Sunday at 8pm.

In case of an emergency, the pastor’s cell phone number is: Edward (402) 302-2812.

ANNOUNCEMENTS JOYS & CONCERNS

If you have any joys or concerns, please share with the congregation by informing the office staff or pastor. From Homestead Presbytery: “Members of the First Presbyterian Church of Cedar Bluffs praise the Lord for the many blessings he continues to give us which include: the faith and abilities needed to maintain our physical church, mutual love and support within our church family, dedicated leadership from session members and deacons and our wonderful session moderator who serves more like a full time minister, conducting worship twice a month, serving funerals, making visits to the ill and others in need, being there for whatever we need. We are concerned for the needs of an aging congregation, several of whom are suffering from debilitating disease. In a very small, rural com-munity we have few young families & children. We pray for continued support and guidance from the Lord as we face a questionable future as a sustainable church.” Please lift up the family of Laura Andrews (mother of Deb & John Curry) in your prayers. Laura passed away on Sept. 24th here in Columbus. Funeral services will be held in Ft. Dodge, Iowa on Sept. 28th. Pray for Carol Vollbracht who was placed on hospice care this week.

Unison Prayer of Confession Feasting on the Word We have sinned, O God, hoarding what we have, grasping for more, and ignoring those who hunger and thirst. We stay with our own kind; we are complacent in the face of systems that oppress. Forgive us; purify us; remake us, that we might love as you love.

We Respond to God’s Word

* Affirmation of Faith - “The Calling of the Church” PC(USA) Book of Order

The Church is to be a community of faith, entrusting itself to God alone, even at the risk of losing its life. The Church is to be a community of hope, rejoicing in the sure and certain knowledge that, in Christ, God is making a new creation. This new creation is a new beginning for human life and for all things. The Church lives in the present on the strength of that promised new creation. The Church is to be a community of love, where sin is forgiven, reconciliation is accomplished, and the dividing walls of hostility are torn down. The Church is to be a community of witness, pointing beyond itself through word and work to the good news of God’s transforming grace in Christ Jesus its Lord.

* Responsive Hymn Wonderful Words of Life (see attached sheet for words and music)

Prayers of The People and the Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Invitation to the Offering Offertory In the Sweet By and By Webster, 1868

* Doxology ‡ Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Christ, all people here below;

Praise Holy Spirit evermore; Praise Triune God, whom we adore. Amen.

* Unison Prayer of Dedication We give you thanks and praise, generous God, for every good gift that comes from your hand: for food and clothing, for life and health, for family and friends, above all for the treasure of your grace. Make us rich in good works, generous and ready to share, taking hold of the life that really is life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

* Closing Hymn Onward, Christian Soldiers (see attached sheet for words and music)

* Benediction

Postlude Marching to Zion Lowry, 1867

After praising God with the Postlude, all are warmly welcome to the 5th Sunday Potluck in the Fellowship Hall.

The focus of this year’s Living Waters fall gathering is ‘Living the Marks’. Ministry has many facets to it like a gem or a kaleidoscope. ‘Living the Marks’ refers to eight characteristics (or marks), that can be part of a person’s ministry, be they lay ministers or authorized. When you think about the ministry that you do on behalf of the church, which of these marks are you practicing? Spiritual practice — Nurturing UCC identity — Leadership skills — Sacred stories and traditions — Caring — Thinking about God — Justice and mercy — Strengthening personal and relational skills. The Marks are a tool that may help us to see God working in our lives and ministry. All are welcome! All are invited to celebrate the many facets of ministry
