UP and DLSU

Last August 7, 2011 at exactly 10:51 pm, I interviewed my cousin, Christine Jo

Ann M. Zuniga at her house in San Andres, Manila. She is now 18 years old and

studying BS Industrial Pharmacy in University of the Philippines (Manila). She

graduated from Manila Science High School and became the 1st

honorable mention.

Her grade in UPCAT was 1. 3 or 1.25. At first, she was taking up BS Nursing and she

decided to shift and picked BS Industrial Pharmacy. She is now a 3 rd year student in

UP. My topic is all about the culture of UP students, especially to what they usually do,

their activities, and how they interact with each other.

According to my interviewee, that the things she normally do is just like what the

other students do. During her free time it is either she eats or study. Their library is

always full of students. The students are lazy to buy or don’t have money to buy books,

so they will just go to the library to study and make a research there. She usually eats in

a karinderya with very affordable prizes. She sometimes eat with her friends and hang

out with them if they have free time because not all of them have the same schedule

and they are the ones who fix/ create their own class schedule. In UP, when you are still

a freshman you are in a block section, but when you are already 2 nd year, you are on

now on your own. Usually, the students are not alone and they have some friends or

companions. Especially those students who are activist. She said that those students

are always having meeting and discussing what will they do to the next rally. There

are a lot of activist in school, but they are just doing it for a cause, they are fighting for

what they think is right. We can’t blame them for their ideologies and just respect them.

They have their freedom to do it and anyone can join them.

There are a lot of organizations in UP and according to her “As in sa kahit

anong isipin mo may org para dun. “. She joined the “GC Org.” but she is not actively

participating in it. Sometimes their activities is making out reach programs, they

sometimes go to the PGH to read stories to the patients especially the kids. Sometimes,

some organizations unite or merge with the other orgs. And helping each other so that

they can help a lot of people .They don’t have their own org room, that’s why they just

“tambay” in a place where there is a table and a chair. They will just put a sign that tells

they are the GC Org. There are other students who are like them. But if you have a

meeting you can ask for a reservation of a room. There is a lot of activities in UP like for

example the essay writing contest, drawing contest and a lot more. Students are not

forced to join this contest and it is their freedom whether they join or not.

When I asked her what does their classroom looks like she replied to me

“nakakahiya naman”. Their classrooms can be described as “simple” that’s what my

interviewee said about it. They are usually 30 in a class and when in comes to the lab

only 15 students can fit it inside it, because it is kind of small. The classrooms are air-

conditioned, the chairs are maid out of plastic, their classroom is clean and they also

have projectors. Sometimes there are rooms with broken air conditioners and still, they

don’t fix it. She calls the old aircons the “Jurassic air-con” because of its oldness. Right

now, her classrooms are ok and she is contented for what she has and there are also

rooms with a carpeted floor and she thinks that it is great achievement for UP.

She is under the College of Pharmacy that’s why she is required to wear uniform

in school everyday. Except for Wednesday, because it serves as their wash day. If you

are in the college of arts (minor subjects) you can wear civilian clothes. Anything you

want, shorts, slippers, and even gays and lesbians can cross-dress. She said that there

are people who are just wearing pajamas when coming to school. She said that

sometimes there are also some teachers who do not care what would their students

think of what they are wearing and they know to themselves that they are very good

professors. But still, there are professor who needs to wear formal attire, so that the

students will have more respect to them.

She said that sometimes the professors have their own teaching styles and they

always express their freedom or liberty. She said that there are professors who do not

give quizzes, but gives a final exam that is very hard. There are also some who always

gives quizzes and that prof. will no longer give a final exam. Sometimes there are

subject that if you perfected or got a very high score for all of your quizzes, you will be

exempted for the finals test. Their quizzes are sometimes over 50, 10, 20 and a lot

more. Ate Christine said that for her, it is better that the professor gives quizzes, so that

when it comes to the final exams it will become more easy because you know the style

of how you teachers give test.

She said that they don’t have any religious subjects, because the majority of the

students in UP is not Catholic, and she thinks that there are more Christians in UP.

There has been an issue in UP that their chancellor made an altar in school and a lot of

students was against it. They fought for what they think is right for their belief. There is

also a YFC org. in their school. Sometimes, they bring pastors to their school and

organizing seminars or talks. They are also having concerts for the students. There are

also a club/ org. for atheist. They don’t believe in God and only believe in scientific

explanations.

When she entered UP she was told that they will ne experiencing a culture

shock, because there is a lot of difference in high school and college. She is a catholic,

and there was this time that while they were in class she heard her classmate was

saying that there is no God. At first she was very shock but she said that she respects

the faith of other people. She said that Students in UP respect each others faith,

religion, belief, and practices. You should learn how to adjust with other people. It

doesn’t mean that you should absorb what they are saying. Instead you should just

adjust and learn how to blend in, but don’t forget your own beliefs and always stay

strong.

I also asked her why did she studied in UP. She said that “wala lang”, it was

near to their house, they have her dream course, and because it was her dream school

since she was just a little kid.

I asked her the question “what is UP student? “ A UP stuident is someone who

is socially responsible, civically conscious, but at the same time upholding the wisdom

expected of the Filipino youth.” She replied.

COMPARISON:

From what I have observed and learned I know that there is a difference between

the culture of the students of La Salle and UP, but there is still sameness in some

aspects. When I have a free time I also eat with my friends or just study. The library in

school is not always full compared to UP. When it comes to how the professors dress, I

think that the professors in DLSU are much better. They always wear casual or formal

attire and very decent clothes. The students in DLSU don’t wear any uniforms and we

have limitations when it comes to the dress code. I also noticed that we have very nice

facilities. When something is broken they will immediately fix or replace it with a new

one. The students here in DLSU are not activist, they show their ideologies and beliefs

in a more decent and proper way. They don’t go to rally’s like the UP students do. I think

that when it comes to religion, majority of the students here in DLSU is Catholics. I

admire how they practice respect and freedom in their school. It is a very good example

for each one of us. I am not also actively participating in any organization. I noticed that

the organizations here in DLSU are also very active, but compared to UP each

organization has their own club room.

Having differences between the two universities does not shows who is much

greater between the two. We should treat each other equally and always respect their

beliefs and practices. We shouldn’t judge other people’s culture and learn how to

adjust.

TRANSCRIPT:

ME: What do you usually do during your vacant or free time?CHRISTINE: Our class schedule is kind of complicated; so in my vacant time, I just eatand maybe prepare for our next class.

ME: Where do you usually eat?CHRISTINE: Oh kumain, that’s a good question. Well on Mondays I eat in TGIF, onTuesdays I eat in Racks, on Wednesday Shakey’s, Thursday’s Pizza Hut, Friday’s wellmaybe a good Japanese restaurant. HAHAHAHA! Just joking. No I just eat at theCarinderya, it sells, you know TAPSILOG, just the basic, because we’re poor.Hahaha! ME:Usually, how much is the food?CHRISTINE: Oh food. Like a P100.ME: May mga kasama po ba kayong friends kapag kumakain?CHRISTINE: Meron, depende sa schedule. Pati yung ibang grupo kasi maraming mgaaktibista dun eh. Hahaha! Perolagi rin akong nasa libraray, kasi wala rin akong ibang tatambayan eh. Nakakatamadminsan pumunta sa mall kaya pag maikli yung break time, sa library na lang, nagaaralna lang.ME: Ano po yung madalas na activity na ginagawa niyo sa school?CHRISTINE: Activities, madaming activities, kasi sa UP parang maraming orgs.Usuallynaman As in sa kahit anong isipin mo may org para dun. Maraming actibista dun, pero for a cause naman yun. Kunwari, affiliated kami with Kabataan Party List. Hahaha!

ME: Anong organization kayo kasali?CHRISTINE: Org ko.Farmjam yun yung mga kumakanta.ME: Farmjam?

CHRISTINE: Oo at Indayog yung mga sumasayaw. Hahaha!

Basta may

Kunware isangsubject is 3 units, so it translates to three hours per week. Kapag major kagaya ko , forexample, I am from the college of pharmacy ,usually ang majors namin once a weeklang siya. For example ung subject A namin kailangan ng LAB at kailngan din g lecture. So once a week yung Lecture, then next week naman yung LAB. Kapag lecture, usually2 hours yung session, p[ag LAB matagal, madalas mga 3 hours. Ngayon, I have 4 LABsubjects.
