What is an Interview?

An interview is a recruitment tool which can be used for employment, volunteering or to fill places with an education or training provider.

It is a conversation where questions are asked by the interviewer to gather information, facts or statements from the interviewee that will help them to decide whether a person is the right person for the position.

Has anyone experienced an interview whether for work, work experience, volunteering, school etc including any informal ones?

Prepare – Having a video interview doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take it seriously. Treat it as if you were interviewing in person, research the company, think about any questions you want to ask, practice your answers to common interview questions.  Technology – Test your headset, audio / mic, camera and internet before starting.  Environment – Don’t spoil your appearance with a messy background.  Distractions –  Try to avoid being distracted, even smaller distractions like a text message can throw you off. Turn off those notifications and set up in a quiet, distraction-free area. Body Language - You can present a positive image by ensuring a good posture. Place both feet on the ground and avoid slouching. Look into the camera as often as possible, especially when you’re speaking. This will give your interviewer the sense that you’re engaged and not distracted by what’s happening on your screen. Appearance – Look smart and wear professional attire, you should dress the same as you would in a face-to-face interview. Doing so not only makes you appear professional, but it will also make you feel more prepared and confident.

1. Mention experiences and proven successes that relate to the position. 2. Consider how your current studies / experience relate to the job you’re applying for. 3. Highlight your personality to break the ice. - Since the “Tell me about yourself” interview question is about getting to know you, it’s a good idea to share your personality with your interviewer

“What are your strengths?”

Example:

My greatest strength is my people skills. Part of that comes from my ability to maintain strict levels of confidentiality, I’m to go to person when my classmates & friends need advice or just someone to listen.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
This seems like an easy question – you know what you’re good at right? Try and make sure you pick an example which is relatable to the position you are interviewing for.

“What are your weaknesses?”

Example:

I feel my weakness is my presenting skills although I’m currently working this. I’ve recently been practicing in front of the mirror which has really helped. Although I’m not yet ready to present to a large audience I’m now confident enough to present to a smaller group.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Think of an actual weakness that isn’t an essential requirement for the job and explain how you became aware of it and are working on improving upon it. This shows that you are reflective, willing to learn, and striving to get better.

Curve Ball Questions.

Curveball questions are questions that you might not expect to be. They are used to catch you off guard and test how you react under pressure.

There are obviously no right answers to questions like these, but this is your chance to be creative and really impress with your honesty / inventiveness depending on the question.

I was working as a retail manager at a department store during prom season. A customer purchased a dress online and had it delivered to the store. One of my associates accidentally put the dress out on the floor, where another customer immediately purchased it.
