Orientation

I will begin my internship paper thoughtfully analyzing my experiences with the very

first activity that I was entitled to. The internship orientation began on the first day of the

internship program. In total fifty-five new interns were hired just for the summer of 2016,

twenty-five in whom were at the Alpharetta, Georgia campus. The largest internship group in

the history of the company we felt extremely proud, nervous, and looking forward to what we

can gain, and what exactly the entire experience will entail. We began the orientation with

snacks, drinks, and many free objects given to us by Renu Midha and her colleagues, as well as

a briefing on the itinerary for the first week and entire summer. As expected, we ultimately

received information on important dates, activities, and pre-employment tasks. We also were

briefed on perks such as free Starbucks, facilities; such as a gym, mailing facility, and activity

room that we may utilize. We all were extremely excited, and the atmosphere in the room was

quite enjoyable. Furthermore the entire group was introduced with other interns at two

other locations including Boca Raton, Florida and Dayton, Ohio via Skype video calling through

a massive projector that outputs in approximately 100 inches of display. The entire orientation

lasted roughly three hours and we were all also introduced to the Chief Technology Officer and

other top level officials, and management within LexisNexis Risk Solutions. When the

orientation sessions were complete we were released to our supervisors. My main supervisor's

name within my particular department is Maxwell Herrington.

Company Overview

Reed Elsevier is an extraordinarily large firm with many subsidiaries including

Elsevier, LexisNexis Risk Solutions, Reed Business Information, Reed Exhibitions, and Elsevier

Health Sciences. As a vast majority of the population may very well conclude. Reed Elsevier,

also known as “RELX Group” consists of a plethora of intellectual enterprises that operate

within one enterprise. Since I work at LexisNexis Risk Solutions, I will therefore begin to

explain LexisNexis Risk Solutions more in-depth. LexisNexis Risk Solutions contains many

different branches, divisions and departments. The main two branches are Legal and

Professional, and enterprise Risk Solutions that also contain an array of different departments.

The main revenue source and leverage power within LexisNexis Risk Solutions is software

licensing, and individuals personal and professional data distributed for public and private

entities that seek data analytics, risk and compliance, fraud detection,

investigation, and customer acquisition and retention services. The Legal and Professional side I

was not briefed on accordingly, but speaking in broad terms it contains software solutions for

government, legal and academic institutions to utilize. The ultimate goal is and mission

of LexisNexis is to foster in and simplify intuitive applications, and personnel to further assist

corporations, small businesses, enterprises, and government in need of extraordinary expertise in 2 | P a g e

both public and private sectors of society. LexisNexis operates the third largest data center in the

United States located at the Alpharetta, Georgia campus. The data that is stored there intakes

over four Petabytes worth of memory and is highly secured. The summer of 2016 interns went

on a thorough tour of the facility and learned a prodigious of information pertaining to the

facility that I am unfortunately unable to mention. As you may expect, I am not be able to cover

all the complexities of LexisNexis in a manner in which I would like to within my entire

paper. LexisNexis also has two other smaller office locations encompassed in the Atlanta,

Georgia metro area.

I:   Projects

A multitude of different projects were undertaken by me during my summer internship at

LexisNexis. Projects given to me by my supervisor were continuous and included many

different variations of tasks, objectives, and outcomes. The projects that were given to me were

extremely educational, and insightful. Many of them were utilized through Microsoft Excel,

Intelligent Investigator, Trail Tracker, Pre-payment manager, and many other various software

applications and languages such as SQL, and Apache. The data given to me was thus analyzed

and deciphered to ultimately decipher Risk Solutions to our clients, and further gather new

clients with the “Tip of The Month”. I continuously checked data spreadsheets for errors and

omissions, validated client data, organized data into a meaningful context, and also made sure

that our knowledge of rules, statutes, laws, and regulations were up to date to tackle client 3 | P a g e

Page 5: Internship Activities LexisNexis

P a g e | 4

solutions on a massive scale. Projects were given to me to further develop, and continue the

pipeline of raw data into an analytical context, where the data is made to ultimately simplify and

deepen relationships with clients and gather potential clients. The “Tip of the Month” was

mainly utilized to send to potential and current clients to give them a heads up on current trends

of fraud, waste, and abuse in the Healthcare industry. The Tips and data were mostly sent out-

bound to insurance carriers both private and public in societal orientation. The clients that

received the data would in-turn contact us requesting our services to assist them in saving

money, and to also gather money that was allegedly utilized in an impotent manner for

healthcare provider monetary, and social gains. The projects given to me were plentiful and kept

me on my toes, and busy due to the fact that they were extremely time consuming, but the

rewards were certainly fruitful as I gained important Knowledge of client and provider behavior,

healthcare industry facts, and also how to analyze data to transform into a meaningful, and

abundant source of reference for future client relationship endeavors that arise. Many projects

were developed through the use of software applications as stated above, mostly proprietary, but

many other third party software applications that I would use to assist in engineering the final

products. Software applications such as Microsoft, Excel, SQL, Word, Apache, J-query, and

Adobe software suite, Access, Outlook, Skype, Global Meet, Java and a plethora of others were

also utilized in the process of development. Projects that were the most time consuming were the

projects that required massive data extraction, recovering, and analysis of clients that possess an

extraordinary amount of "lives" data.    4 | P a g e

II:   Activities, Duties, and Tasks

LexisNexis being such a massive corporation the amount of interns hired directly

correlate to the need for new faces within the corporate structure. I believe that due to the

amount of people retiring in the near future, we are looked upon as the new generation to follow

in their footsteps with our own visions and goals. My particular position is premiered within the

Healthcare analytics division, and my role is a fraud, waste and abuse intern. This position and

department deals with analyzing physicians, psychiatrists, surgeons, and other healthcare

professionals data to pinpoint fraud and mitigate risk for entities that collude and do business

with private and government insurance organizations. Though our particular department is not

large, we handle big data, and work with many clients. I am not the only intern at this particular

department as there are two other interns in our department. We all have similar roles, but I

work with more data analytics with a large proportion of clients colluding with Medicare and

Medicaid public and privately held health services. Most of the clients that we work with are

classified as state sponsored healthcare services. As you can imagine fraud, waste, and abuse is

increasing and already is perpetuating on an enormous scale within the United States and her

territories. It is also estimated that seven-hundred and fifty dollars, roughly 18 to 37 percent of

all healthcare related expenses is squandered due to fraud, waste, and abuse activity (1) . We 5 | P a g e

Page 7: Internship Activities LexisNexis

P a g e | 6

handle many claims information pertaining to healthcare and aim to identify fraud, waste, and

abuse to potentially mitigate future false imbursements and ultimately pass on monetary value in

the form of return on funds from the healthcare provider. That being said we cannot force the

client to seek the funds or even acknowledge them, but we can forward them information on

how to pursue false claims and receive funds back on a timely basis. During my internship I

worked on many projects, mostly to do with excel, and using Excel I found information

important and useful to our clients. This form of data maneuvering is known as “data mining”.

Another project that I worked on is known as “Tip of The Month”, where we analyzed copious

amounts of data and returned a brief explanation of potential fraud, waste, and abuse claims so

that they can contact us about perceptions they may have about these potential risk and seek our

expertise to ultimately save their money and keep them out of the legal system. The intern roles

and tasks were not the only material that was projected to me, I as well as all the other interns

had responsibilities in the form of activities that we did. Activities range from community

service known as “Cares”, to touring facilities and events for our amusement. Events for our

amusement consisted of outings such as Atlanta Braves games to amusement park visits. Every

week we would have a meeting with our program manager, during the meeting we would

discuss future events, questions, and future responsibilities and tasks that are handed to us. The

responsibilities and tasks ranged from building a personal bio to developing a presentation that

each one of us had to do. Tasks and responsibilities also pertain to using proprietary software

dealing with Healthcare analytics. We as a department utilized these brilliant software 6 | P a g e

Page 8: Internship Activities LexisNexis

P a g e | 7

applications to simplify our overall analytic process. The proprietary software placed a major

role in the process in which we forwarding clients and potential clients insight and justification

on fraud, waste, and abuse claims that have or may have, we also mitigate risks by providing an

application that locates and examines potential future fraud, waste, and abuse activity before it

becomes a claim in the future. All of these different moving objects and colorful array of

software applications and expertise from professionals within the department

provide an extraordinary service to the clients and in turn raise overall revenue

for LexisNexis as an entire entity. As an ending note, we also provide services known as

“Virtual Special Investigations Unit”, where the client would never have to even step foot into

our offices and the entire process is done through proprietary LexisNexis software and meetings

are conducted using Global Meet, Skype, or proprietary video calling software that LexisNexis

Risk Solutions developed.

III : In-depth explanation

On a routine; micro daily basis scale I will now explain how the average day conducted

for me. A work day started with me being briefed on the day's tasks and objectives by my

supervisor. From the information that I received, I therefore transformed that into tasks and

duties. Also, many of times I was also briefed on new clients, future business endeavors, and

tasks that were delegated to me for me to complete by a set deadline. These tasks have a massive

range, and I wouldn't be able to explain them all due to complexity and length, but I could 7 | P a g e

Page 9: Internship Activities LexisNexis

P a g e | 8

explain briefly on what exactly I was doing in a larger, slightly macro context. My daily tasks,

activities, and objectives ranged from coordinating meeting with clients and attending the

meetings. Handling all of my intern responsibilities within LexisNexis, such as community

service, group visits to sporting games, and many other obligations I had as an intern. I

thoroughly enjoyed these activities and tasks as it assisted in gauging my overall internship

experience to an extraordinary scale.

I: Experiences

Next, I will describe my experiences with the firm. My experiences are best described as

educational and productively insightful, though I worked on a plethora of projects I mostly

learned about the Reed Elsevier, LexisNexis and our specific division’s effects on public and

private entities. I was taught how to utilize and transform raw data into an insightful, important

an extraordinarily effective profiting mechanism. I also learned how to properly conduct myself

in a professional realm at a better pace, though I already possess professional expertise from

classes, mentors, and prior internships, I was taught how to allocate my personal attributes and

skills to efficiently utilize LexisNexis, time, and resources to a much greater extent.

II : Manager, Supervisor   and Colleagues Perceptions

Now, I will explain my experiences with my supervisor, program manager and

Colleagues. Throughout my internship I enjoyed working with a plethora of individuals that 8 | P a g e

Page 10: Internship Activities LexisNexis

P a g e | 9

mentored me, assisted me, and were very polite and extremely helpful in general. As I stated

above, the entire experience was productively educational and insightful. My program manager

was extraordinarily generous and polite. My main supervisor Maxwell Herrington was also

extremely generous, helpful, and patient. The Colleagues and co-workers that I had the pleasure

to work with also possessed a tremendous amount of professionalism, helpfulness,

and an overall great attitude towards me and my endeavors. Comprehensively speaking all

employees on site was brilliant and extraordinarily polite, and helpful in all the different aspects

of my experiences.

Miscellaneous Internship Activities, and Tasks

Throughout the Summer we took place in many different activities and tasks as an intern

group, being that there was twenty-five of us at the Alpharetta, Georgia campus, and thirty-five

at the Dayton, Ohio, and King of Prussia offices we remained in solid contact with each other

and shared our experiences via an Alfresco software made website domain for pictures and per

our communication purposes. Activity wise we did many different things including sporting

game attendance, special tournaments for prizes, community service, weekly meetings via

Skype with other interns, lunches, YMCA visits, and we also had the option to exercise with

each other during working hours. The weekly meetings were conducted as a type of seminar

type of obligation where we voiced our concerns, thoughts, opinions, experiences, and any types

of issues we all might be having at that particular point in time. The weekly required meetings 9 | P a g e

Page 11: Internship Activities LexisNexis

P a g e | 10

were very enjoyable and lasted roughly sixty minutes, and addressed many concerns that we

might individually possess. The patterns in which these activities were organized were

completely orderly and well announced via our internal network communication systems. As I

stated above, we also went on a data center tour to witness the actual “HPCC Systems”

mainframe core to better understand how the actual data is actually secured, maintained, and the

pre-cautions taken to protect the proprietary data, and the manner in which the employees of the

data center conduct themselves.

I: Company Future Prospects, Facts & General Opinions

For LexisNexis and Reed Elsevier and the many subsidiaries, the future looks extremely

promising and tangibly progressive. My experiences at LexisNexis have proven to install a

prodigious amount of interest in a future with the corporate organization, preferably in the Risk

Management, General Insurance, Information Technology, or the many Fraud Waste, and Abuse

(FWA) departments stationed throughout the many different departments and segments of Reed

Elsevier as a whole. RELX Group, or known more formerly as Reed Elsevier has been in the

business of assisting individuals, organizations, corporations, and government for over a

millennium now, and that in itself is impressive. I find that working for an organization that

possesses prestigious amount of societal importance is more than I could ask for when

conducting future job searches as a full-time employee after I graduate from The University of

Georgia: Terry College of Business. In the future, as I search, and settle for career prospects 10 | P a g e

Page 12: Internship Activities LexisNexis

P a g e | 11

Reed Elsevier and LexisNexis Risk Solutions will certainly be on my the list as a top contender

in my overall search. The time that I spent as a Healthcare analytics: Fraud, waste, and abuse

intern has most certainly aided in my experiential, professional, and personal gain.

II: Upper Level Manager Interview Q & A

As an extra step I decided to conduct an interview with a upper level manager specifically

stationed in the Healthcare department of LexisNexis Risk Solutions. The director’s name is

Ravi Swaminathan and he is the Director of Software Engineering and clinical solutions within

the Healthcare department at Reed Elsevier: LexisNexis. Mr. Swaminathan has an extensive past

in Legal & Professional, and Risk Solutions. He moved to the United States to New Jersey in

1997, from that point he was contracted a job with National Insurance where he developed large

scale projects to aid in data integration for National Insurance. The contract was tenured in

Dayton, Ohio with Legal & Professional side of LexisNexis Risk Solutions.

Mr. Swaminathan developed software to coincide with the growing need of analytical bases with

Legal & Professional data that LexisNexis acquired through complex transactions.

Mr. Swaminathan is an alma mater of the University of Madras in India, and acquired his MBA

at Wright University in Dayton, Ohio. Previous positions held by Mr. Swaminathan include jobs

with financial institutions on Wall Street in New York City, Juvenile Diabetes Research. He has

been continuously working for LexisNexis for fifteen years, and recently started his new

position as Director of Software Engineering within Healthcare in May of 2016. In ten to twenty 11 | P a g e

Page 13: Internship Activities LexisNexis

P a g e | 12

years Mr. Swaminathan sees LexisNexis Healthcare Analytics and Risk Solutions to

grow exponentially. He stated at this time it is in toddler stages, but in five to ten years he sees

massive upside in probability and revenue towards the billions of dollars. He also stated that the

main data center for Alpharetta, Georgia LexisNexis campus is placing new data servers to hold

the in-flux of raw data from healthcare providers, and healthcare insurance carriers. Mr.

Swaminathan also gave me career advice regarding my future endeavors, he stated that I need to

make sure I build my professional network base to its maximum potential and keep growing it

because I can never know too many people. He also stated that keeping contact with all my

professional connections is vital in accessing my true business professional potential. He sees

the Healthcare branch of LexisNexis is expected to grow aggressively with new acquisitions,

major clients, and raw data that is un-parallel because of the fact that the raw data is owned and

licenses to and by LexisNexis, which in turn makes for an extremely profitable mechanism for

LexisNexis Risk Solutions in general. He stated that his overall experience so far with

LexisNexis Risk Solutions has been fantastic and he looks forward in being a part of the overall

growth of Reed Elsevier and LexisNexis as an entire entity for a long time to come. He also said

that his favorite parts about working for LexisNexis Risk Solutions are that it contains good

people, good benefits, good balance between work and life with plenty of paid holidays and paid

vacation, and he also like to work with his colleagues. Mr. Swaminathan told me to keep in

contact with him if I have any questions, or when I begin my full-time position job search and

interview process. 12 | P a g e

Page 14: Internship Activities LexisNexis

Final Conclusion

My Experiences here at LexisNexis have been extremely delightful. From daily intern

activities, to learning more about LN and their business endeavor. The entire experience was

educational, fruitful, and resourceful. As a whole my intelligence of the healthcare industry grew

exponentially and with that knowledge I can now utilize in a broader spectrum. Through the

entire experience I gained insight on Reed Elsevier and LexisNexis as a whole. The internship

activities were extremely well thought out, productive, and entertaining to all, and the projects

that were handed off to me to ultimately assist in the business process transformation and the

monetary bottom line were also extraordinarily educational and experiential. I thank all my

mentors, colleagues, program manager Renu Midha, and supervisor Maxwell Herrington for all

the patience and assisted work that it took for the interns nationally and for me individually. The

internship opportunity at LexisNexis Risk Solutions has been extraordinary and I learned many

new things as well as re-shaping of my previous ideas. Through this magnificent experience I

made new friends, professional network connections, mentors, and a copious amount of

intelligence on business process for healthcare investigations, general business practices,

networking, professionally socializing, and also how to communicate professionally with current

and future clients and many other various business professions that may arise out of my

professional network to its entirety.
