Towards a connected world
We are moving towards a more connected, instrumented and data driven world …

What is the Internet of Things?
ITU-T report in 2005 titled “The Internet of Things.”
A highly interconnected world that connects to large databases and to the “network of networks” or the Internet.
Also known as M2M (Machine-to – Machine communication), pervasive computing or ubiquitous computing
![Page 5: Internet of Things](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061118/54690185af7959b6258b464c/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Adding another dimension …
This ‘Internet of Things’ or M2M (machine-to-machine) network adds another dimension to the existing notions of networks. Anything

Internet of Things/ M2M
The ‘Internet of Things/M2M’ is essentially millions of devices sending data for backend processing through the internet.
![Page 7: Internet of Things](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061118/54690185af7959b6258b464c/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Everyday articles from tires to toasters will have these intelligent devices
embedded in them.

Radio Frequency IDs (RFIDs)• Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) was the early and pivotal enabler of this
technology, with a tiny tag responding in the presence of a receiver which emits a signal.
• Originally used during World War II in British Spitfire airplanes to distinguish friend from foe
![Page 10: Internet of Things](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061118/54690185af7959b6258b464c/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
RFIDs in retail stores
• Retailers keep track of the goods going out of warehouses to their stores with this technology.
• In a typical scenario one can imagine a retail store in which all items are RFID tagged. A shopping cart fitted with a receiver can automatically track all items placed in the cart for immediate payment and check-out.

IOT & M2M in transport
• Embed intelligent devices in the tires of automobiles.
• Payment of highway tolls.
• Insurance companies can give discounts to safe drivers.
![Page 12: Internet of Things](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061118/54690185af7959b6258b464c/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Defining the Internet of Things
When objects can both sense the environment and communicate, they become tools for understanding complexity and responding to it swiftly.
McKinsey & Company - 2010

Real time data available for processing
Having a 4th dimension of intelligent devices enable us to capture data and take appropriate action
Forecast events ahead of time Take intelligent action based on event

Pervasive, ubiquitous computing
“The most profound technologies are those that disappear and weave themselves into the fabric of everyday life.”
Mark Weiser, 1991

Internet of Things in the world today
• Smart City• Smart Grids• Smart Home• M2M & Health
![Page 16: Internet of Things](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061118/54690185af7959b6258b464c/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Smart City
• Sensors attached to transport vehicles and signals
• Forecast traffic congestion
• Re-route traffic• Provide discounts on
less crowded routes
![Page 17: Internet of Things](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061118/54690185af7959b6258b464c/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Smart Grid• Conventional grid – a)
Generation b) Transmission and c) Distribution
• Losses, outages, blackouts (US 2003, India Jul 31,2012)
• Millions of sensors along the grid.
Benefits• Resiliency to failures
• Automatic re-routing of energy
• Ability to isolate the faults
![Page 18: Internet of Things](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061118/54690185af7959b6258b464c/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
Smart Home
• Smart Homes will be equipped with smart meters with 2 way communication with your energy utility.
• Monitor your energy usage and save money by utilizing in off-peak hours
![Page 19: Internet of Things](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061118/54690185af7959b6258b464c/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
M2M and health
• Implantable device capable of remote monitoring of patients with heart problems.
• Warn physicians when it detects an irregularity in the patient’s heart rhythm.
• Also used in sugar level monitoring in real time
![Page 20: Internet of Things](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061118/54690185af7959b6258b464c/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Structural integrity
• The ‘Internet of Things’ can also be used to monitor the stress and the load on bridges and forewarn when the stress is too great and a collapse is imminent.
![Page 21: Internet of Things](https://reader033.vdocuments.site/reader033/viewer/2022061118/54690185af7959b6258b464c/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
IOT in mines
• In mines, the sensors can send real-time info on the toxicity of the air, the structural strength of the walls or forewarn the possibility of flooding.
